• 4 I was very happy to learn about some of your children. I am happy that they are following the way of truth, just as the Father commanded us.

• 6 And loving means living the way he commanded us to live. And God's command is this: that you live a life of love. You heard this command from the beginning.
• 7 Many false teachers are in the world now. They refuse to say that Jesus Christ came to earth and became a man. Anyone who refuses to accept this fact is a false teacher and the enemy of Christ.
• 8 Be careful! Don't lose the reward you have worked for. Be careful so that you will receive all of your reward.
• 9 Everyone must continue to follow only the teaching about Christ. Whoever changes that teaching does not have God. But whoever continues to follow the teaching about Christ has both the Father and his Son.
• 10 Don't accept those who come to you but do not bring this teaching. Don't invite them into your house. Don't welcome them in any way.
• 11 If you do, you are helping them with their evil work.
• 12 I have much to say to you. But I don't want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come visit you. Then we can be together and talk. That will make us very happy.

• 4 I am happy to find some of your children living in the truth as the Father has said we should.
• 5 And now I ask you, lady, that we have love one for the other. I am not writing to you about a new Law but an old one we have had from the beginning.
• 6 Love means that we should live by obeying His Word. From the beginning He has said in His Word that our hearts should be full of love.
• 7 There are many false teachers in the world. They do not say that Jesus Christ came in a human body. Such a person does not tell the truth. He is the false-christ.
• 8 Watch yourselves! You do not want to lose what we have worked for. You want to get what has been promised to you.
• 9 Anyone who goes too far and does not live by the teachings of Christ does not have God. If you live by what Christ taught, you have both the Father and the Son.
• 10 If a person comes to you with some other kind of teaching, do not take him into your home. Do not even greet him.
• 11 The person who does has a share in his sins.
• 12 I have many things to write to you. I do not want to write them in this letter. But I hope to come to you soon. Then we can talk about these things together that your joy may be full.

• 1 The Elder: To the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth-- and not only I, but also all who have come to know the truth--
• 2 because of the truth that remains in us and will be with us forever.
• 3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
• 4 I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth, in keeping with a command we have received from the Father.
• 5 So now I urge you, lady-- not as if I were writing you a new command, but one we have had from the beginning-- that we love one another.
• 6 And this is love: that we walk according to His commands. This is the command as you have heard it from the beginning: you must walk in love.
• 7 Many deceivers have gone out into the world; they do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.
• 8 Watch yourselves so that you don't lose what we have worked for, but you may receive a full reward.
• 9 Anyone who does not remain in the teaching about Christ, but goes beyond it, does not have God. The one who remains in that teaching, this one has both the Father and the Son.
• 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your home, and don't say, "Welcome," to him;
• 11 for the one who says, "Welcome," to him shares in his evil works.
• 12 Though I have many things to write to you, I don't want to do so with paper and ink. Instead, I hope to be with you and talk face to face so that our joy may be complete.
• 13 The children of your elect sister send you greetings.
