• 14 They made their lives bitter by hard service with mortar and bricks and by all kinds of service in the fields. Every kind of service the Israelites were required to give was rigorous.
• 15 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah,
• 16 "When you assist the Hebrew women in childbirth, observe at the delivery: If it is a son, kill him, but if it is a daughter, she may live."
• 17 But the midwives feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live.
• 18 Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this and let the boys live?"
• 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women— for the Hebrew women are vigorous; they give birth before the midwife gets to them!"
• 20 So God treated the midwives well, and the people multiplied and became very strong.
• 21 And because the midwives feared God, he made households for them.
• 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, "All sons that are born you must throw into the river, but all daughters you may let live."

Numbers 26:5

• 5 Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. The Reubenites: from Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; from Pallu, the family of the Palluites;

• 1 Jacob traveled to Egypt with his sons. Each son had his own family with him. These are the sons of Israel:
• 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
• 3 Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin,
• 4 Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
• 5 There was a total of 70 people who were direct descendants of Jacob. (Joseph was one of the twelve sons, but he was already in Egypt.)
• 6 Later, Joseph, his brothers, and all the people of that generation died.
• 7 But the Israelites had many children, and their number grew and grew and the country of Egypt was filled with them.
• 8 Then a new king began to rule Egypt. He did not know Joseph.
• 9 This king said to his people, "Look at the Israelites. There are too many of them, and they are stronger than we are!
• 10 We must make plans to stop them from growing stronger. If there is a war, they might join our enemies, defeat us, and escape from the land!"
• 11 The Egyptians decided to make life hard for the Israelites, so they put slave masters over the people. These masters forced the Israelites to build the cities of Pithom and Rameses for the king. The king used these cities to store grain and other things.
• 12 The Egyptians forced the Israelites to work harder and harder. But the harder they worked, the more they grew and spread, and the more the Egyptians became afraid of them.
• 13 So the Egyptians made them work even harder.
• 14 They made life hard for the Israelites. They forced the Israelites to work hard at making bricks and mortar and to work hard in the fields. The Egyptians showed no mercy in all the hard work they made the Israelites do!
• 15 There were two Hebrew nurses who helped the Israelite women give birth. They were named Shiphrah and Puah. The king of Egypt said to the nurses,
• 16 "You will continue to help the Hebrew women give birth to their children. If a girl baby is born, let the baby live. But if the baby is a boy, you must kill him!"
• 17 But the nurses trusted God, so they did not obey the king's command. They let all the baby boys live.
• 18 The king of Egypt called for the nurses and asked them, "Why did you do this? Why did you let the baby boys live?"
• 19 The nurses said to the king, "The Hebrew women are much stronger than the Egyptian women. They give birth to their babies before we can go to help them."
• 20 The nurses trusted God, so he was good to them and allowed them to have their own families. The Hebrews continued to have more children, and they became very strong.

• 22 So Pharaoh gave this command to his own people: "If the Hebrew women give birth to a baby girl, let it live. But if they have a baby boy, you must throw it into the Nile River."

• 5 These are the people from the tribe of Reuben. (Reuben was the firstborn son of Israel.) The family groups were: Hanoch—the Hanochite family group; Pallu—the Palluite family group;

• 1 These are the names of the sons of Israel that came into Egypt together with Jacob their father; they came in each with their whole family.

• 5 But Joseph was in Egypt. And all the souls born of Jacob were seventy-five.
• 6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
• 7 And the children of Israel increased and multiplied, and became numerous and grew exceedingly strong, and the land multiplied them.
• 8 And there arose up another king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.
• 9 And he said to his nation, Behold, the race of the children of Israel is a great multitude, and is stronger than we:
• 10 come then, let us deal craftily with them, lest at any time they be increased, and whensoever war shall happen to us, these also shall be added to our enemies, and having prevailed against us in war, they will depart out of the land.
• 11 And he set over them task-masters, who should afflict them in their works; and they built strong cities for Pharao, both Pitho, and Ramesses, and On, which is Heliopolis.
• 12 But as they humbled them, by so much they multiplied, and grew exceedingly strong; and the Egyptians greatly abhorred the children of Israel.
• 13 And the Egyptians tyrannised over the children of Israel by force.
• 14 And they embittered their life by hard labours, in the clay and in brick-making, and all the works in the plains, according to all the works, wherein they caused them to serve with violence.
• 15 And the king of the Egyptians spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews; the name of the one was, Sepphora; and the name of the second, Phua.
• 16 And he said, When ye do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and they are about to be delivered, if it be a male, kill it; but if a female, save it.
• 17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt appointed them; and they saved the male children alive.
• 18 And the king of Egypt called the midwives, and said to them, Why is it that ye have done this thing, and saved the male children alive?
• 19 And the midwives said to Pharao, The Hebrew women are not as the women of Egypt, for they are delivered before the midwives go in to them. So they bore children.
• 20 And God did well to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very strong.
• 21 And as the midwives feared God, they established for themselves families.
• 22 And Pharao charged all his people, saying, Whatever male child shall be born to the Hebrews, cast into the river; and every female, save it alive.

• 11 So they put men in power over them to make them work hard. And they built the store-cities Pithom and Raamses for Pharaoh the king.
• 12 But the more the Egyptians made them suffer, the more they became until they spread throughout the land. So the Egyptians were afraid of the people of Israel.
• 13 The Egyptians made the people of Israel work very hard.
• 14 They made their lives bitter with hard work building with stones and with all kinds of work in the field. They made them work very hard.
• 15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew nurses. The name of one was Shiphrah. The name of the other was Puah.
• 16 He said, "When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth, and see the baby before the mother does, if it is a son, kill him. But if it is a daughter, let her live."
• 17 But the nurses feared God. They did not do what the king of Egypt told them. They let the boys live.
• 18 So the king of Egypt called the nurses and said to them, "Why have you done this, and let the boys live?"
• 19 The nurses answered Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. They are strong. They give birth before the nurse comes to them."
• 20 So God was good to the nurses. And the people became many and strong.
• 21 Because the nurses feared God, He gave them families.
• 22 Then Pharaoh told all his people, "Throw every son who is born to the Hebrews into the Nile. But keep every daughter alive."

• 12 But the harder the Egyptians forced the Israelites to work, the more the Israelites grew in number and spread out. So the Egyptians became very afraid of them
• 13 and demanded even more of them.
• 14 They made their lives bitter. They forced the Israelites to work hard to make bricks and mortar and to do all kinds of work in the fields. The Egyptians were not merciful to them in all their pain- ful work.
• 15 Two Hebrew nurses, named Shiphrah and Puah, helped the Israelite women give birth to their babies. The king of Egypt said to the nurses,
• 16 "When you are helping the Hebrew women give birth to their babies, watch! If the baby is a girl, let her live, but if it is a boy, kill him!"
• 17 But the nurses feared God, so they did not do as the king told them; they let all the boy babies live.
• 18 Then the king of Egypt sent for the nurses and said, "Why did you do this? Why did you let the boys live?"
• 19 The nurses said to him, "The Hebrew women are much stronger than the Egyptian women. They give birth to their babies before we can get there."
• 20 God was good to the nurses. And the Hebrew people continued to grow in number, so they became even stronger.
• 21 Because the nurses feared God, he gave them families of their own.
• 22 So the king commanded all his people, "Every time a boy is born to the Hebrews, you must throw him into the Nile River, but let all the girl babies live."

• 11 And they put over them slavemasters in order to afflict them with their burdens. And he built store cities for Pharaoh: Pithon and Raamses.
• 12 And as much as they afflicted them, so much they multiplied and so much they spread. And they were afraid before the sons of Israel.
• 13 And Egypt made the sons of Israel to serve with harshness.
• 14 And they made their lives bitter by hard service, in clay, and in bricks, and in all work in the field; all their work which they made them do with harshness.
• 15 And the king of Egypt said to the midwives of the Hebrews, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah, and the name of the second, Puah;
• 16 and he said, When you midwife the Hebrew women, and look on the birth-stools, if it is a son, you will kill him; and if it is a daughter, it shall live.
• 17 And the midwives feared God, and they did not do as the king of Egypt said to them. And they kept the male children alive.
• 18 And the king of Egypt called to the midwives and said to them, Why do you do this thing and keep alive the male children?
• 19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous. Before the midwives come to them they bear.
• 20 And God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied and became exceedingly strong.
• 21 And it was, because the midwives feared God, He made houses for them.
• 22 And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, Every son that is born, you shall cast him into the river. And you shall keep alive every daughter.
