1
Now
about
that
time
Herod
the
king
stretched
forth
his
hands
to
vex
certain
of
the
church.
2
And
he
killed
James
the
brother
of
John
with
the
sword.
3
And
because
he
saw
it
pleased
the
Jews,
he
proceeded
further
to
take
Peter
also.
(Then
were
the
days
of
unleavened
bread.)
4
And
when
he
had
apprehended
him,
he
put
him
in
prison,
and
delivered
him
to
four
quaternions
of
soldiers
to
keep
him;
intending
after
Easter
to
bring
him
forth
to
the
people.
5
Peter
therefore
was
kept
in
prison:
but
prayer
was
made
without
ceasing
of
the
church
unto
God
for
him.
6
And
when
Herod
would
have
brought
him
forth,
the
same
night
Peter
was
sleeping
between
two
soldiers,
bound
with
two
chains:
and
the
keepers
before
the
door
kept
the
prison.
7
And,
behold,
the
angel
of
the
Lord
came
upon
him,
and
a
light
shined
in
the
prison:
and
he
smote
Peter
on
the
side,
and
raised
him
up,
saying,
Arise
up
quickly.
And
his
chains
fell
off
from
his
hands.
8
And
the
angel
said
unto
him,
Gird
thyself,
and
bind
on
thy
sandals.
And
so
he
did.
And
he
saith
unto
him,
Cast
thy
garment
about
thee,
and
follow
me.
9
And
he
went
out,
and
followed
him;
and
wist
not
that
it
was
true
which
was
done
by
the
angel;
but
thought
he
saw
a
vision.
10
When
they
were
past
the
first
and
the
second
ward,
they
came
unto
the
iron
gate
that
leadeth
unto
the
city;
which
opened
to
them
of
his
own
accord:
and
they
went
out,
and
passed
on
through
one
street;
and
forthwith
the
angel
departed
from
him.
11
And
when
Peter
was
come
to
himself,
he
said,
Now
I
know
of
a
surety,
that
the
Lord
hath
sent
his
angel,
and
hath
delivered
me
out
of
the
hand
of
Herod,
and
from
all
the
expectation
of
the
people
of
the
Jews.
12
And
when
he
had
considered
the
thing,
he
came
to
the
house
of
Mary
the
mother
of
John,
whose
surname
was
Mark;
where
many
were
gathered
together
praying.
13
And
as
Peter
knocked
at
the
door
of
the
gate,
a
damsel
came
to
hearken,
named
Rhoda.
14
And
when
she
knew
Peter’s
voice,
she
opened
not
the
gate
for
gladness,
but
ran
in,
and
told
how
Peter
stood
before
the
gate.
15
And
they
said
unto
her,
Thou
art
mad.
But
she
constantly
affirmed
that
it
was
even
so.
Then
said
they,
It
is
his
angel.
16
But
Peter
continued
knocking:
and
when
they
had
opened
the
door,
and
saw
him,
they
were
astonished.
17
But
he,
beckoning
unto
them
with
the
hand
to
hold
their
peace,
declared
unto
them
how
the
Lord
had
brought
him
out
of
the
prison.
And
he
said,
Go
shew
these
things
unto
James,
and
to
the
brethren.
And
he
departed,
and
went
into
another
place.
18
Now
as
soon
as
it
was
day,
there
was
no
small
stir
among
the
soldiers,
what
was
become
of
Peter.
19
And
when
Herod
had
sought
for
him,
and
found
him
not,
he
examined
the
keepers,
and
commanded
that
they
should
be
put
to
death.
And
he
went
down
from
Judaea
to
Caesarea,
and
there
abode.
20
And
Herod
was
highly
displeased
with
them
of
Tyre
and
Sidon:
but
they
came
with
one
accord
to
him,
and,
having
made
Blastus
the
king’s
chamberlain
their
friend,
desired
peace;
because
their
country
was
nourished
by
the
king’s
country.
21
And
upon
a
set
day
Herod,
arrayed
in
royal
apparel,
sat
upon
his
throne,
and
made
an
oration
unto
them.
22
And
the
people
gave
a
shout,
saying,
It
is
the
voice
of
a
god,
and
not
of
a
man.
23
And
immediately
the
angel
of
the
Lord
smote
him,
because
he
gave
not
God
the
glory:
and
he
was
eaten
of
worms,
and
gave
up
the
ghost.
24
But
the
word
of
God
grew
and
multiplied.
25
And
Barnabas
and
Saul
returned
from
Jerusalem,
when
they
had
fulfilled
their
ministry,
and
took
with
them
John,
whose
surname
was
Mark.

Peter,

was
kept

fervent
prayer

was
Peter
sleeping
between
two
soldiers,
having
been
bound
with
two
chains,
guards
also
before
the
door
were
keeping
the

and
lo,
a
messenger
of
the
Lord
stood

and
a
light
shone
in
the
buildings,
and
having
smitten
Peter
on
the
side,
he
raised
him
up,
saying,
`Rise
in
haste,`
and
his
chains
fell
from
off
his
hands.
8
The
messenger
also
said
to
him,
`Gird

and
bind

and
he
did
so;
and
he
saith
to
him,
`Put

and
having
gone
forth,
he
was
following
him,
and
he
knew
not
that
it

that
which

the
messenger,
and
was
thinking
he
saw
a

10
and
having
passed
through
a
first
ward,
and
a
second,
they
came
unto
the
iron
gate
that
is
leading
to
the
city,
which
of
its
own
accord
did
open
to
them,
and
having
gone
forth,
they
went
on
through
one
street,
and
immediately
the
messenger
departed
from
him.
11
And
Peter
having
come
to
himself,
said,
`Now

where
there
were

And

having
knocked
at

porch,
there
came
a
damsel
to
hearken,
by
name
Rhoda,
14
and
having
known
the
voice
of
Peter,
from
the
joy
she
did
not
open
the

having
run

told
of
the
standing

Peter
before
the
porch,

and
they
said
unto
her,
`Thou
art
mad;`
and
she
was
confidently
affirming
it
to
be
so,
and
they
said,
`It
is
his
messenger;`
16
and
Peter
was
continuing
knocking,
and
having
opened,
they
saw
him,
and
were
astonished,
17
and
having
beckoned
to
them
with
the
hand
to
be
silent,
he
declared
to
them
how
the
Lord
brought
him
out

he
said,

and
on
a
set
day,
Herod
having
arrayed
himself
in

apparel,

having
sat
down
upon
the
tribunal,
was
making

the
populace
were
shouting,
`The

presently
there
smote
him
a

because
he

give

to
God,

having
been
eaten

the

prison,
but
constant
prayer
was
made
by
the
assembly
to
God
for
him.
6
The
same
night
when
Herod
was
about
to
bring
him
out,
Peter
was
sleeping
between
two
soldiers,
bound
with
two
chains.
Guards
in
front
of
the
door
kept
the
prison.
7
And
behold,
an
angel
of
the
Lord
stood
by
him,
and
a
light
shone
in
the
cell.
He
struck
Peter
on
the
side,
and
woke
him
up,
saying,
"Stand
up
quickly!"
His
chains
fell
off
from
his
hands.
8
The
angel
said
to
him,
"Get
dressed
and
put
on
your
sandals."
He
did
so.
He
said
to
him,
"Put
on
your
cloak,
and
follow
me."
9
And
he
went
out
and
followed
him.
He
didn't
know
that
what
was
being
done
by
the
angel
was
real,
but
thought
he
saw
a
vision.
10
When
they
were
past
the
first
and
the
second
guard,
they
came
to
the
iron
gate
that
leads
into
the
city,
which
opened
to
them
by
itself.
They
went
out,
and
went
down
one
street,
and
immediately
the
angel
departed
from
him.
11
When
Peter
had
come
to
himself,
he
said,
"Now
I
truly
know
that
the
Lord
has
sent
out
his
angel
and
delivered
me
out
of
the
hand
of
Herod,
and
from
everything
the
Jewish
people
were
expecting."
12
Thinking
about
that,
he
came
to
the
house
of
Mary,
the
mother
of
John
whose
surname
was
Mark,
where
many
were
gathered
together
and
were
praying.
13
When
Peter
knocked
at
the
door
of
the
gate,
a
maid
named
Rhoda
came
to
answer.
14
When
she
recognized
Peter's
voice,
she
didn't
open
the
gate
for
joy,
but
ran
in,
and
reported
that
Peter
was
standing
in
front
of
the
gate.
15
They
said
to
her,
"You
are
crazy!"
But
she
insisted
that
it
was
so.
They
said,
"It
is
his
angel."
16
But
Peter
continued
knocking.
When
they
had
opened,
they
saw
him,
and
were
amazed.
17
But
he,
beckoning
to
them
with
his
hand
to
be
silent,
declared
to
them
how
the
Lord
had
brought
him
out
of
the
prison.
He
said,
"Tell
these
things
to
James,
and
to
the
brothers."
Then
he
departed,
and
went
to
another
place.
18
Now
as
soon
as
it
was
day,
there
was
no
small
stir
among
the
soldiers
about
what
had
become
of
Peter.
19
When
Herod
had
sought
for
him,
and
didn't
find
him,
he
examined
the
guards,
and
commanded
that
they
should
be
put
to
death.
He
went
down
from
Judea
to
Caesarea,
and
stayed
there.
20
Now
Herod
was
very
angry
with
the
people
of
Tyre
and
Sidon.
They
came
with
one
accord
to
him,
and,
having
made
Blastus,
the
king's
chamberlain,
their
friend,
they
asked
for
peace,
because
their
country
depended
on
the
king's
country
for
food.
21
On
an
appointed
day,
Herod
dressed
himself
in
royal
clothing,
sat
on
the
throne,
and
gave
a
speech
to
them.
22
The
people
shouted,
"The
voice
of
a
god,
and
not
of
a
man!"
23
Immediately
an
angel
of
the
Lord
struck
him,
because
he
didn't
give
God
the
glory,
and
he
was
eaten
by
worms
and
died.
24
But
the
word
of
God
grew
and
multiplied.
25
Barnabas
and
Saul
returned
to
Jerusalem,
when
they
had
fulfilled
their
service,
also
taking
with
them
John
whose
surname
was
Mark.

things,"
and
then
he
left
and
went
to
another
place.
18
At
daybreak
there
was
great
consternation
among
the
soldiers
over
what
had
become
of
Peter.
19
When
Herod
had
searched
for
him
and
did
not
find
him,
he
questioned
the
guards
and
commanded
that
they
be
led
away
to
execution.
Then
Herod
went
down
from
Judea
to
Caesarea
and
stayed
there.
20
Now
Herod
was
having
an
angry
quarrel
with
the
people
of
Tyre
and
Sidon.
So
they
joined
together
and
presented
themselves
before
him.
And
after
convincing
Blastus,
the
king's
personal
assistant,
to
help
them,
they
asked
for
peace,
because
their
country's
food
supply
was
provided
by
the
king's
country.
21
On
a
day
determined
in
advance,
Herod
put
on
his
royal
robes,
sat
down
on
the
judgment
seat,
and
made
a
speech
to
them.
22
But
the
crowd
began
to
shout,
"The
voice
of
a
god,
and
not
of
a
man!"
23
Immediately
an
angel
of
the
Lord
struck
Herod
down
because
he
did
not
give
the
glory
to
God,
and
he
was
eaten
by
worms
and
died.
24
But
the
word
of
God
kept
on
increasing
and
multiplying.
25
So
Barnabas
and
Saul
returned
to
Jerusalem
when
they
had
completed
their
mission,
bringing
along
with
them
John
Mark.

so
he

Peter

)
4
He
arrested
Peter
and
put
him
in
jail,
where
he
was
guarded
by
a
group
of
16
soldiers.
Herod
planned
to
bring
Peter
before
the
people,
but
he
wanted
to
wait
until
after
the
Passover
festival.
5
So
Peter
was
kept
in
jail,
but
the
church
was
constantly
praying
to
God
for
him.
6
One
night,
Peter,
bound
with
two
chains,
was
sleeping
between
two
of
the
soldiers.
More
soldiers
were
guarding
the
door
of
the
jail.
Herod
was
planning
to
bring
Peter
out
before
the
people
the
next
day.
7
Suddenly
an
angel
of
the
Lord
was
standing
there,
and
the
room
was
filled
with
light.
The
angel
tapped
Peter
on
the
side
and
woke
him
up.
The
angel
said,
"Hurry,
get
up!"
The
chains
fell
off
Peter's
hands.
8
The
angel
said,
"Get
dressed
and
put
on
your
sandals."
Peter
did
as
he
was
told.
Then
the
angel
said,
"Put
on
your
coat
and
follow
me."
9
So
the
angel
went
out
and
Peter
followed.
He
did
not
know
if
the
angel
was
really
doing
this.
He
thought
he
might
be
seeing
a
vision.
10
Peter
and
the
angel
went
past
the
first
guard
and
the
second
guard.
Then
they
came
to
the
iron
gate
that
separated
them
from
the
city.
The
gate
opened
for
them
by
itself.
After
they
went
through
the
gate
and
walked
about
a
block,
the
angel
suddenly
left.
11
Peter
realized
then
what
had
happened.
He
thought,
"Now
I
know
that
the
Lord
really
sent
his
angel
to
me.
He
rescued
me
from
Herod
and
from
all
the
bad
things
the
Jewish
leaders
were
planning
to
do
to
me."
12
When
Peter
realized
this,
he
went
to
the
home
of
Mary,
the
mother
of
John,
who
was
also
called
Mark.
Many
people
were
gathered
there
and
were
praying.
13
Peter
knocked
on
the
outside
door.
A
servant
girl
named
Rhoda
came
to
answer
it.
14
She
recognized
Peter's
voice,
and
she
was
very
happy.
She
even
forgot
to
open
the
door.
She
ran
inside
and
told
the
group,
"Peter
is
at
the
door!"
15
The
believers
said
to
her,
"You
are
crazy!"
But
she
continued
to
say
that
it
was
true.
So
they
said,
"It
must
be
Peter's
angel."
16
But
Peter
continued
to
knock.
When
the
believers
opened
the
door,
they
saw
him.
They
were
amazed.
17
Peter
made
a
sign
with
his
hand
to
tell
them
to
be
quiet.
He
explained
to
them
how
the
Lord
led
him
out
of
the
jail.
He
said,
"Tell
James
and
the
other
brothers
what
happened."
Then
he
left
and
went
to
another
place.
18
The
next
day
the
soldiers

very
upset.
They
wondered
what

to

19
Herod
looked
everywhere
for
him
but
could
not
find
him.
So
he
questioned
the
guards
and
then
ordered
that
they
be
killed.
Later,
Herod
moved
from
Judea.
He
went
to
the
city
of
Caesarea
and
stayed
there
a
while.
20
Herod
was
very
angry
with
the
people
from
the
cities
of
Tyre
and
Sidon.
But
these
cities
needed
food
from
his

so
a
group
of
them
came
to
ask
him
for
peace.
They
were
able
to
get
Blastus,
the
king's
personal
servant,
on
their
side.
21
Herod
decided
on
a
day
to
meet
with
them.
On
that
day
he
was
wearing
a
beautiful
royal
robe.
He
sat
on
his
throne
and
made
a
speech
to
the
people.
22
The
people
shouted,
"This
is
the
voice
of
a
god,
not
a

23
Herod
did
not
give
the
glory
to
God.
So
an
angel
of
the
Lord
caused
him
to
get
sick.
He
was
eaten
by
worms
inside
him,
and
he
died.
24
The
message
of
God
was
spreading,
reaching
more
and
more
people.
25
After
Barnabas
and
Saul
finished
their
work
in
Jerusalem,
they
returned
to
Antioch,
taking
John
Mark
with
them.

kept
in
the
prison,
but
fervent
prayer
was
made
by
the
assembly
to
God
on
his
behalf.
6
But
when
Herod
was
about
to
bring
him
out,
in
that
night
Peter
was
sleeping
between
two
soldiers,
being
bound
with
two
chains,
also
guards
were
keeping
the
prison
before
the
door.
7
And,
behold!
An
angel
of
the
Lord
stood
by,
and
a
light
shone
in
the
building.
And
striking
Peter's
side,
he
raised
him
up,
saying,
Rise
up
in
haste!
And
the
chains
fell
off
from
his
hands.
8
And
the
angel
said
to
him,
Gird
yourself,
and
bind
on
your
sandals.
And
he
did
so.
And
he
said
to
him,
Throw
around
your
garment
and
follow
me.
9
And
going
out,
he
followed
him,
and
did
not
know
that
this
happening
through
the
angel
was
real,
but
he
thought
he
saw
a
vision.
10
And
going
through
a
first
and
a
second
guard,
they
came
on
the
iron
gate
leading
into
the
city,
which
opened
to
them
of
itself.
And
going
out,
they
went
on
one
street;
and
instantly
the
angel
withdrew
from
him.
11
And
having
come,
Peter
said
within
himself,
Now
I
know
truly
that
the
Lord
sent
out
His
angel
and
plucked
me
out
of
Herod's
hand,
and
out
of
all
the
expectation
of
the
people
of
the
Jews.
12
And
considering,
he
came
to
the
house
of
Mary
the
mother
of
John,
the
one
being
surnamed
Mark,
where
many
were
gathered
together,
and
praying.
13
And
Peter
was
knocking
at
the
door
of
the
porch,
and
a
servant
girl
named
Rhoda
came
near
to
listen.
14
And
recognizing
Peter's
voice,
from
joy
she
did
not
open
the
porch,
but
running
in
she
reported
Peter
was
standing
before
the
porch.
15
But
they
said
to
her,
You
are
raving.
But
she
insisted,
holding
it
to
be
so.
And
they
said,
It
is
his
angel.
16
But
Peter
kept
on
knocking.
And
opening,
they
saw
him
and
were
amazed.
17
And
signaling
to
them
with
the
hand
to
be
silent,
he
told
them
how
the
Lord
led
him
out
of
the
prison.
And
he
said,
Report
these
things
to
James
and
the
brothers.
And
going
out,
he
went
to
another
place.
18
And
day
having
come,
there
was
not
a
little
disturbance
among
the
soldiers,
saying,
What,
then,
became
of
Peter?
19
And
searching
for
him,
and
not
finding
him,
examining
the
guards,
Herod
commanded
them
to
be
led
away.
And
going
down
from
Judea
to
Caesarea,
he
stayed.
20
And
Herod
was
in
bitter
hostility
with
the
Tyrians
and
Sidonians.
But
with
one
passion
they
came
to
him.
And
persuading
Blastus,
the
one
over
the
king's
bedroom,
they
begged
peace,
because
their
country
was
fed
from
the
royal
bounty.
21
And
on
a
set
day,
having
been
clothed
in
a
regal
garment,
and
sitting
on
the
tribunal,
Herod
made
a
speech
to
them.
22
And
the
mass
of
people
cried
out,
The
voice
of
a
god,
and
not
of
a
man!
23
And
instantly
an
angel
of
the
Lord
struck
him,
because
he
did
not
give
the
glory
to
God.
And
having
been
eaten
by
worms,
his
soul
went
out.
24
But
the
Word
of
God
grew
and
increased.
25
And
Barnabas
and
Saul
returned
from
Jerusalem,
having
fulfilled
the
service,
and
having
taken
with
them
the
one
surnamed
Mark.

About
that
time
King
Herod
cruelly
attacked
some
who
belonged
to
the
church,
2
and
he
killed
James,
John's
brother,
with
the
sword.
3
When
he
saw
that
it
pleased
the
Jews,
he
proceeded
to
arrest
Peter
too,
during
the
days
of
Unleavened
Bread.
4
After
the
arrest,
he
put
him
in
prison
and
assigned
four
squads
of
four
soldiers
each
to
guard
him,
intending
to
bring
him
out
to
the
people
after
the
Passover.
5
So
Peter
was
kept
in
prison,
but
prayer
was
being
made
earnestly
to
God
for
him
by
the
church.
6
On
the
night
before
Herod
was
to
bring
him
out
for
execution,
Peter
was
sleeping
between
two
soldiers,
bound
with
two
chains,
while
the
sentries
in
front
of
the
door
guarded
the
prison.
7
Suddenly
an
angel
of
the
Lord
appeared,
and
a
light
shone
in
the
cell.
Striking
Peter
on
the
side,
he
woke
him
up
and
said,
"Quick,
get
up!"
Then
the
chains
fell
off
his
wrists.
8
"Get
dressed,"
the
angel
told
him,
"and
put
on
your
sandals."
And
he
did
so.
"Wrap
your
cloak
around
you,"
he
told
him,
"and
follow
me."
9
So
he
went
out
and
followed,
and
he
did
not
know
that
what
took
place
through
the
angel
was
real,
but
thought
he
was
seeing
a
vision.
10
After
they
passed
the
first
and
second
guard
posts,
they
came
to
the
iron
gate
that
leads
into
the
city,
which
opened
to
them
by
itself.
They
went
outside
and
passed
one
street,
and
immediately
the
angel
left
him.
11
Then
Peter
came
to
himself
and
said,
"Now
I
know
for
certain
that
the
Lord
has
sent
His
angel
and
rescued
me
from
Herod's
grasp
and
from
all
that
the
Jewish
people
expected."
12
When
he
realized
this,
he
went
to
the
house
of
Mary,
the
mother
of
John
Mark,
where
many
had
assembled
and
were
praying.
13
He
knocked
at
the
door
in
the
gateway,
and
a
servant
named
Rhoda
came
to
answer.
14
She
recognized
Peter's
voice,
and
because
of
her
joy
she
did
not
open
the
gate,
but
ran
in
and
announced
that
Peter
was
standing
at
the
gateway.
15
"You're
crazy!"
they
told
her.
But
she
kept
insisting
that
it
was
true.
Then
they
said,
"It's
his
angel!"
16
Peter,
however,
kept
on
knocking,
and
when
they
opened
the
door
and
saw
him,
they
were
astounded.
17
Motioning
to
them
with
his
hand
to
be
silent,
he
explained
to
them
how
the
Lord
had
brought
him
out
of
the
prison.
"Report
these
things
to
James
and
the
brothers,"
he
said.
Then
he
departed
and
went
to
a
different
place.
18
At
daylight,
there
was
a
great
commotion
among
the
soldiers
as
to
what
could
have
become
of
Peter.
19
After
Herod
had
searched
and
did
not
find
him,
he
interrogated
the
guards
and
ordered
their
execution.
Then
Herod
went
down
from
Judea
to
Caesarea
and
stayed
there.
20
He
had
been
very
angry
with
the
Tyrians
and
Sidonians.
Together
they
presented
themselves
before
him,
and
having
won
over
Blastus,
who
was
in
charge
of
the
king's
bedroom,
they
asked
for
peace,
because
their
country
was
supplied
with
food
from
the
king's
country.
21
So
on
an
appointed
day,
dressed
in
royal
robes
and
seated
on
the
throne,
Herod
delivered
a
public
address
to
them.
22
The
populace
began
to
shout,
"It's
the
voice
of
a
god
and
not
of
a
man!"
23
At
once
an
angel
of
the
Lord
struck
him
because
he
did
not
give
the
glory
to
God,
and
he
became
infected
with
worms
and
died.
24
Then
God's
message
flourished
and
multiplied.
25
And
Barnabas
and
Saul
returned
to
Jerusalem
after
they
had
completed
their
relief
mission,
on
which
they
took
John
Mark.
