21 Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.

22 God's anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of Yahweh placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

23 The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the donkey turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam struck the donkey, to turn her into the way.

24 Then the angel of Yahweh stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

25 The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, and she thrust herself to the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he struck her again.

26 The angel of Yahweh went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

34 Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, I have sinned; for I didn't know that you stood in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease you, I will get me back again.

35 The angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak to you, that you shall speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

36 When Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him to the City of Moab, which is on the border of the Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border.

27 The Lord had spoken to Aaron and told him, "Go out into the desert and meet Moses." So Aaron went and met Moses at the Mountain of God. He saw Moses and kissed him.

Exodus 6:12

12 But Moses answered, "The Israelites refuse to listen to me. So surely Pharaoh will also refuse to listen. I am a very bad speaker."

2 Balak son of Zippor saw everything the Israelites had done to the Amorites. The king of Moab was very frightened of the Israelites because there were so many of them. He was very afraid.

4 The king of Moab said to the leaders of Midian, "This large group of people will destroy everything around us, the way a cow eats all the grass in a field." Balak son of Zippor was the king of Moab at this time.

5 He sent some men to call Balaam son of Beor. Balaam was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River. This was where Balaam's people lived. This was Balak's message: "A new nation of people has come out of Egypt. There are so many people that they cover all the land. They have camped next to me.

6 Come and help me. These people are too powerful for me. I know that you have great power. If you bless people, good things happen to them. And if you curse people, bad things happen to them. So come and curse these people. Maybe then I will be able to defeat them and force them to leave my country."

7 The leaders of Moab and Midian left. They went to talk to Balaam. They carried with them money to pay him for his service. Then they told him what Balak had said.

8 Balaam said to them, "Stay here for the night. I will talk to the Lord and tell you the answer he gives me." So the leaders of Moab stayed there with Balaam that night.

9 God came to Balaam and asked, "Who are these men with you?"

10 Balaam said to God, "The king of Moab, Balak son of Zippor, sent them to give me a message.

11 This is the message: A new nation of people has come out of Egypt. There are so many people that they cover the land. So come and curse these people. Then maybe I will be able to fight them and force them to leave my land."

12 But God said to Balaam, "Don't go with them. You must not curse those people. They are my people."

13 The next morning Balaam got up and said to leaders from Balak, "Go back to your own country. The Lord will not let me go with you."

14 So the leaders of Moab went back to Balak and told him this. They said, "Balaam refused to come with us."

15 So Balak sent other leaders to Balaam. This time he sent many more than the first time. And these leaders were much more important than the first ones he sent.

16 They went to Balaam and said: "Balak son of Zippor says this to you: Please don't let anything stop you from coming.

17 I will pay you very much, and I will do whatever you ask. Come and curse these people for me."

18 Balaam gave Balak's officials his answer. He said, "I must obey the Lord my God.

19 But you can stay here tonight like the other men did, and during the night I will learn what the Lord wants to tell me."

20 That night, God came to Balaam. God said, "These men have come again to ask you to go with them. So you can go with them. But do only what I tell you to do."

21 The next morning, Balaam got up, put a saddle on his donkey, and went with the Moabite leaders.

22 Balaam was riding on his donkey. Two of his servants were with him. While Balaam was traveling, God became angry. So the Lord's angel stood in the road in front of Balaam to stop Balaam.

23 When Balaam's donkey saw the Lord's angel standing in the road with a sword in his hand, the donkey turned from the road and went into the field. Balaam could not see the angel, so he was very angry at the donkey. He hit the donkey and forced it to go back on the road.

24 Later, the Lord's angel stood at a place where the road became narrow. This was between two vineyards. There were walls on both sides of the road.

25 Again the donkey saw the Lord's angel. So the donkey walked very close to one wall. This crushed Balaam's foot against the wall. So Balaam hit his donkey again.

26 Later, the Lord's angel stood at another place where the road became narrow. There was no place where the donkey could go around him. It could not turn to the left or to the right.

27 The donkey saw the Lord's angel. So the donkey lay down with Balaam sitting on top of it. Balaam was very angry at the donkey. So he hit it with his walking stick.

28 Then the Lord caused the donkey to speak. The donkey said to Balaam, "Why are you angry at me? What have I done to you? You have hit me three times!"

29 Balaam answered the donkey, "You have made me look foolish. If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now!"

30 But the donkey said to Balaam, "Look, I am your donkey. You have ridden me for so many years. And you know that I have never done this to you before!" "That is true," Balaam said.

31 Then the Lord allowed Balaam to see the angel. The Lord's angel was standing in the road, holding a sword in his hand. Balaam bowed low to the ground.

32 Then the Lord's angel asked Balaam, "Why did you hit your donkey three times? I am the one who came to stop you. But just in time,

33 your donkey saw me and turned away from me. That happened three times. If the donkey had not turned away, I probably would have killed you already. And I would have let your donkey live."

34 Then Balaam said to the Lord's angel, "I have sinned. I did not know that you were standing in the road. If I am doing wrong, I will go back home."

35 Then the Lord's angel said to Balaam, "No, you can go with these men. But be careful. Speak only the words that I will tell you to say." So Balaam went with the leaders that Balak had sent.

36 Balak heard that Balaam was coming. So Balak went out to meet him at the Moabite town near the Arnon River. This was at the northern border of his country.

37 When Balak saw Balaam, he said to him, "I asked you before to come. I told you it was very important. Why didn't you come to me? Did you think I might not be able to pay you?"

38 Balaam answered, "Well, I am here now. I came, but I might not be able to do what you asked. I can only say the words that the Lord God tells me to say."

39 Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth.

40 Balak killed some cattle and some sheep as his sacrifice. He gave some of the meat to Balaam and some to the leaders who were with him.

41 The next morning Balak took Balaam to the town of Bamoth Baal. From there they could see part of the Israelite camp.

7 So the leaders of Moab and the leaders of Midian left with the pay in their hand for the one who tells what will happen in the future. When they came to Balaam, they told him Balak's words.

8 Balaam said to them, "Stay here tonight. I will bring word to you as the Lord may speak to me." So the leaders of Moab stayed with Balaam.

9 Then God came to Balaam and said, "Who are these men with you?"

10 Balaam said to God, "Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent word to me, saying,

11 'See, the people who came out of Egypt cover the land. Now come, curse them for me. Then I may be able to fight against them and send them away.' "

12 God said to Balaam, "Do not go with them. Do not curse the people, for I have decided that good would come to them."

13 So Balaam got up in the morning and said to Balak's leaders, "Return to your land. For the Lord will not let me go with you."

14 So the leaders of Moab got up and went to Balak, and said, "Balaam would not come with us."

15 Balak sent leaders again, more than were sent before, and men who were more important.

16 They came to Balaam and said to him, "Balak the son of Zippor says, 'I beg you, let nothing keep you from coming to me.

17 I will give you much honor. I will do whatever you tell me. I beg you to come and curse these people for me.' "

18 Balaam answered and said to Balak's men, "Balak could give me his house full of silver and gold. But I could not do anything, small or big, against the Word of the Lord my God.

19 Now I ask you to stay here tonight. I will find out what else the Lord will say to me."

20 God came to Balaam at night and said to him, "If the men have come to call you, get up and go with them. But do only what I tell you."

21 So Balaam got up in the morning and got his donkey ready, and went with the leaders of Moab.

22 But God was angry because he was going. The angel of the Lord stood in the way against him. Balaam was sitting on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

23 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way with his sword in his hand, the donkey turned off the road and went into the field. But Balaam hit the donkey to turn her on the road again.

24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path in the grape-field, with a wall on each side.

25 The donkey saw the angel of the Lord. So she pushed herself against the wall and crushed Balaam's foot against it, so he hit her again.

26 Then the angel of the Lord went farther. He stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn to the right or the left.

27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam. So Balaam was angry and hit the donkey with his stick.

28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, "What have I done to you? Why have you hit me these three times?"

29 Balaam said to the donkey, "Because you have made a fool of me! If there had been a sword in my hand, I would have killed you by now!"

30 The donkey said to Balaam, "Am I not your donkey on which you have traveled all your life to this day? Have I ever done this to you before?" And Balaam said, "No."

31 Then the Lord opened Balaam's eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way with his sword in his hand. And he bowed to the ground.

32 The angel of the Lord said to him, "Why have you hit your donkey these three times? See, I have come out against you, because your way was against me.

33 But the donkey saw me and turned from me these three times. If she had not turned from me, for sure I would have killed you, and let her live."

34 Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, "I have sinned. For I did not know that you were standing in the way against me. But now, if it does not please you, I will turn back."

35 The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, "Go with the men. But speak only what I tell you." So Balaam went with the leaders of Balak.

36 Balak heard that Balaam was coming. He went out to meet him at the city of Moab, on the Arnon, at the far side of the country.

37 Balak said to Balaam, "Did I not send men to tell you to come? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?"

38 Balaam said to Balak, "See, I have come to you! Am I able to speak anything at all? The Word that God puts in my mouth is what I must speak."

39 Then Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriathhuzoth.

40 Balak killed bulls and sheep on the altar in worship, and sent some to Balaam and the leaders who were with him.

41 The next morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the high places of Baal. From there he saw part of the people of Israel.

8 Balaam said to them, "Stay here for the night, and I will tell you what the Lord tells me." So the Moabite leaders stayed with him.

9 God came to Balaam and asked, "Who are these men with you?"

10 Balaam said to God, "The king of Moab, Balak son of Zippor, sent them to me with this message:

11 'A nation has come out of Egypt that covers the land. So come and put a curse on them, and maybe I can fight them and force them out of my land.'"

12 But God said to Balaam, "Do not go with them. Don't put a curse on those people, because I have blessed them."

13 The next morning Balaam awoke and said to Balak's leaders, "Go back to your own country; the Lord has refused to let me go with you."

14 So the Moabite leaders went back to Balak and said, "Balaam refused to come with us."

15 So Balak sent other leaders -- this time there were more of them, and they were more important.

16 They went to Balaam and said, "Balak son of Zippor says this: Please don't let anything stop you from coming to me.

17 I will pay you very well, and I will do what you say. Come and put a curse on these people for me."

18 But Balaam answered Balak's servants, "King Balak could give me his palace full of silver and gold, but I cannot disobey the Lord my God in anything, great or small.

19 You stay here tonight as the other men did, and I will find out what more the Lord tells me."

20 That night God came to Balaam and said, "These men have come to ask you to go with them. Go, but only do what I tell you."

21 Balaam got up the next morning and put a saddle on his donkey. Then he went with the Moabite leaders.

22 But God became angry because Balaam went, so the angel of the Lord stood in the road to stop Balaam. Balaam was riding his donkey, and he had two servants with him.

23 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a sword in his hand, the donkey left the road and went into the field. Balaam hit the donkey to force her back on the road.

24 Later, the angel of the Lord stood on a narrow path between two vineyards, with walls on both sides.

25 Again the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, and she walked close to one wall, crushing Balaam's foot against it. So he hit her again.

33 And the ass saw Me and turned aside before Me these three times. If she had not turned aside surely now I would have killed you and saved her alive.

34 And Balaam said to the Angel of Jehovah, I have sinned, for I did not know that You stood against me in the way. Now if evil is in Your eyes, I will turn back by myself.

35 And the Angel of Jehovah said to Balaam, Go with the men. But only the word that I speak to you, it you shall speak. And Balaam went with the leaders of Balak.

36 And when Balak heard that Balaam had come, and had gone out to meet him, to a city of Moab which is on the border of Arnon, which is in the outermost border,

37 then Balak said to Balaam, Sending, did I not send to you, to call for you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not truly able to honor you?

7 The elders of Moab and Midian departed with fees for divination in hand. They came to Balaam and reported Balak's words to him.

8 He said to them, "Spend the night here, and I will give you the answer the LORD tells me." So the officials of Moab stayed with Balaam.

9 Then God came to Balaam and asked, "Who are these men with you?"

10 Balaam replied to God, "Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent this message to me:

11 'Look, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the surface of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. I may be able to fight against them and drive them away.'"

12 Then God said to Balaam, "You are not to go with them. You are not to curse this people, for they are blessed."

13 So Balaam got up the next morning and said to Balak's officials, "Go back to your land, because the LORD has refused to let me go with you."

14 The officials of Moab arose, returned to Balak, and reported, "Balaam refused to come with us."

15 Balak sent officials again who were more numerous and higher in rank than the others.

16 They came to Balaam and said to him, "This is what Balak son of Zippor says: 'Let nothing keep you from coming to me,

17 for I will greatly honor you and do whatever you ask me. So please come and put a curse on these people for me!'"

18 But Balaam responded to the servants of Balak, "If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go against the command of the LORD my God to do anything small or great.

19 Please stay here overnight as the others did, so that I may find out what else the LORD has to tell me."

20 God came to Balaam at night and said to him, "Since these men have come to summon you, get up and go with them, but you must only do what I tell you."

21 When he got up in the morning, Balaam saddled his donkey and went with the officials of Moab.

22 But God was incensed that Balaam was going, and the Angel of the LORD took His stand on the path to oppose him. Balaam was riding his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

23 When the donkey saw the Angel of the LORD standing on the path with a drawn sword in His hand, she turned off the path and went into the field. So Balaam hit her to return her to the path.

24 Then the Angel of the LORD stood in a narrow passage between the vineyards, with a stone wall on either side.

25 The donkey saw the Angel of the LORD and pressed herself against the wall, squeezing Balaam's foot against it. So he hit her once again.

26 The Angel of the LORD went ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn to the right or the left.

27 When the donkey saw the Angel of the LORD, she crouched down under Balaam. So he became furious and beat the donkey with his stick.

28 Then the LORD opened the donkey's mouth, and she asked Balaam, "What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?"

29 Balaam answered the donkey, "You made me look like a fool. If I had a sword in my hand, I'd kill you now!"

30 But the donkey said, "Am I not the donkey you've ridden all your life until today? Have I ever treated you this way before?" "No," he replied.

31 Then the LORD opened Balaam's eyes, and he saw the Angel of the LORD standing in the path with a drawn sword in His hand. Balaam knelt and bowed with his face to the ground.

32 The Angel of the LORD asked him, "Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? Look, I came out to oppose you, because what you are doing is evil in My sight.

33 The donkey saw Me and turned away from Me these three times. If she had not turned away from Me, I would have killed you by now and let her live."

34 Balaam said to the Angel of the LORD, "I have sinned, for I did not know that You were standing in the path to confront me. And now, if it is evil in Your sight, I will go back."

35 Then the Angel of the LORD said to Balaam, "Go with the men, but you are to say only what I tell you." So Balaam went with Balak's officials.

36 When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite city on the Arnon border at the edge of his territory.

37 Balak asked Balaam, "Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn't you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you?"

38 Balaam said to him, "Look, I have come to you, but can I say anything I want? I must speak only the message God puts in my mouth."

39 So Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth.

40 Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep, and sent for Balaam and the officials who were with him.

41 In the morning, Balak took Balaam and brought him to Bamoth-baal. From there he saw the outskirts of the people's camp.
