before

to
Daniel,
"Are
you
that
Daniel

is

captives
of
Judah,

father

king

from
Judah?

have
heard
about
you,

spirit
of
the
gods
in
you,

how

insight,
discernment,
and
extraordinary

writing

on

Thus
saith
the
Lord
God
to
Idumea;
I
have
heard
a
report
from
the
Lord,
and
he
has
sent
forth
a
message
to
the
nations.

Arise
ye,
and
let
us
rise
up
against
her
to
war.

Behold,
I
have
made
thee
small
among
the
Gentiles:
thou
art
greatly
dishonoured.
The
pride
of
thine
heart
has
elated
thee,
dwelling
as
thou
dost
in
the
holes
of
the
rocks,
as
one
that
exalts
his
habitation,
saying
in
his
heart,
Who
will
bring
me
down
to
the
ground?

thou
shouldest
mount
up
as
the
eagle,
and
if
thou
shouldest
make
thy
nest
among
the
stars,

will
I
bring
thee
down,
saith

Lord.

thieves
came
in
to
thee,
or
robbers

cast
away?

searched

covenant

thee;

allies
have

snares

they
have

understanding.

In
that
day,
saith

Lord,
I
will
destroy
the
wise
men
out
of
Idumea,
and
understanding
out
of
the
mount
of
Esau.

And
thy
warriors
from
Thaeman
shall
be
dismayed,
to
the
end
that
man
may
be
cut
off
from
the
mount
of
Esau.

Because
of
the
slaughter
and
the
sin
committed
against
thy
brother
Jacob,
shame
shall
cover
thee,
and
thou
shalt
be
cut
off
for
ever.

From

day
that

stoodest
in
opposition
to
him,
in
the
days
when
foreigners
were
taking
captive
his
forces,
and
strangers
entered
into
his
gates,
and

Daniel
whom

Belteshazzar.

learning
and

meaning

dreams

secrets
and
to
give
answers
to
problems.

Daniel,

he
will
tell
you
what
this
means."

was
brought
to
the
king.

king
said
to
him,
"Are
you
that
Daniel

is
one
of
the
people
whom
my
father
the
king
brought
from
Judah?

I
have
heard
that
the
spirit
of
the
gods

and
understanding
and
special
wisdom
have
been
found
in
you
also.

The

men
and
wonder-workers
were
brought
in
to
me

that
they
might
read

writing
and
tell

what
it
means.

could
not
tell

Now

have
heard
that
you
are
able
to
tell
the
meaning

such
things
and
give
answers
to
hard
problems.

answered
the

"Keep

gifts
for
yourself,

writing
to
the
king
and
tell

means.

the

High

Nebuchadnezzar
king,
and
gave
him
greatness,
honor,
and
power.

the

of

nation
and

front

of
a
person's
hand
appeared
and
began
writing
on
the
plaster
of
the
wall,
near
the
lampstand
in
the
royal
palace.
The
king
watched
the
hand
as
it
wrote.

King
Belshazzar
was
very
frightened.
His
face
turned
white,
his
knees
knocked
together,
and
he
could
not
stand
up
because
his
legs
were
too
weak.

The
king
called
for
the
magicians,
wise
men,
and
wizards
of
Babylon
and
said
to
them,
"Anyone
who
can
read
this
writing
and
explain
it
will
receive
purple
clothes
fit
for
a
king
and
a
gold
chain

neck.

person
the

ruler
in
the
kingdom."

wise
men

but

could
not
read

writing

tell
the

it

His
royal

were
confused.

the

asked,

your

Daniel?
Are
you
one
of
the
captives
my
father

brought

Judah?

heard
that
the
spirit
of
the
gods

you,

that

are
very
smart
and
have
knowledge
and
extraordinary
understanding.

The
wise
men
and
magicians
were
brought
to
me
to
read
this
writing
and
to
explain

it
means,
but
they
could
not
explain
it.

I
have
heard
that
you
are
able
to
explain
what
things
mean
and
can
find
the
answers

hard
problems.

Nebuchadnezzar

great,
important,

powerful
king.

people,
nations,
and

who

frightened
of
Nebuchadnezzar.

he
wanted
someone
to
die,
he
killed
that
person.
If
he
wanted
someone
to
live,

person

he
wanted
to
promote,

promoted.
Those
he
wanted
to
be
less
important,
he
made
less
important.

Nebuchadnezzar

too
proud
and
stubborn,
so
he
was
taken
off
his
royal
throne.
His
glory

away.

was
forced
away
from
people,
and
his
mind
became
like
the
mind
of

animal.

wild
donkeys
and
was
fed
grass
like
an
ox

with

God
rules

knew

descendant

Nebuchadnezzar.

not
been
sorry
for
what
you
have
done.

Instead,
you
have
set
yourself
against
the
Lord

heaven.

ordered
the
drinking
cups
from
the
Temple
of
the
Lord
to
be
brought
to
you.
Then
you
and
your
royal
guests,
your
wives,
and
your
slave
women
drank
wine
from
them.

praised
the
gods
of

gods;

Judean

that

predecessor

that
you
have
the

the
greatness
He
gave
him,
all
peoples,
nations,

languages

fearful

anyone

wanted
and
kept
alive

wanted;

exalted

his
heart

deposed

his
royal
throne

glory

from

driven

interpretation

the
message:
MENE

kingdom
and

balance
and

kingdom

divided
and
given
to
