1 David left Gath and ran away to the cave of Adullam. David's brothers and relatives heard that David was at Adullam and went to see him there.

2 Many people joined David. There were men who were in some kind of trouble, men who owed a lot of money, and men who were just not satisfied with life. All kinds of people joined David, and he became their leader. He had about 400 men with him.

3 David left Adullam and went to Mizpah in Moab. David said to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and mother come and stay with you until I learn what God is going to do to me."

4 So David left his parents with the king of Moab. They stayed with the king of Moab as long as David was at the fort.

5 But the prophet Gad said to David, "Don't stay in the fort. Go to the land of Judah." So David left and went to Hereth Forest.

6 Saul heard the report about David and his men while sitting under the tree on the hill at Gibeah. Saul had his spear in his hand. All of his officers were standing around him.

7 Saul said to his officers who were standing around him, "Listen, men of Benjamin. Do you think the son of Jesse (David) will give you fields and vineyards? Do you think he will promote you and make you officers over 1000 men and officers over 100 men?

8 No, but all of you are plotting against me. None of you told me about my son Jonathan and the agreement he made with the son of Jesse. None of you cares enough about me to tell me that my own son Jonathan encouraged David to turn against me and attack me. And that is what David is doing now."

9 Doeg the Edomite was standing there with Saul's officers. Doeg said, "I saw Jesse's son at Nob. David came to see Ahimelech son of Ahitub.

10 Ahimelech prayed to the Lord for David and gave him some food. He even gave David the sword of Goliath the Philistine."

11 Then King Saul ordered some men to bring the priest to him. Saul told them to bring Ahimelech son of Ahitub and all his relatives who were priests at Nob. So all of them came to the king.

12 Saul said to Ahimelech, "Listen now, son of Ahitub." Ahimelech answered, "Yes, sir."

13 Saul said to him, "Why did you and Jesse's son make secret plans against me? You gave David bread and a sword. You prayed to God for him. And right now, David is waiting to attack me."

14 Ahimelech answered, "David is very faithful to you. Not one of your other officers is as faithful as David. He is your own son-in-law and the captain of your bodyguards. Your own family respects David.

15 That was not the first time I prayed to God for David. Not at all! Don't blame me or any of my relatives. We are your servants. I know nothing about what is happening."

16 But the king said, "Ahimelech, you and all your relatives must die."

17 Then the king told the guards at his side, "Go and kill the priests of the Lord because they are on David's side too. They knew he was running away, but they didn't tell me." The king's officers refused to hurt the priests of the Lord.

18 So the king gave the order to Doeg. Saul said, "Doeg, you go kill the priests." So Doeg the Edomite went and killed the priests. That day he killed 85 men who were priests.

19 Nob was the city of the priests. Doeg killed all the people of Nob. He used his sword and killed men, women, children and small babies. He even killed their cattle, donkeys, and sheep.

20 But Abiathar son of Ahimelech escaped. He ran away and joined David.

21 Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the Lord's priests.

22 Then David told Abiathar, "I saw Doeg the Edomite at Nob that day. I knew he would tell Saul! I am responsible for the death of your father's family.

23 Stay with me. Don't be afraid, because the man (Saul) who tried to kill you is the same man who wants to kill me. I will protect you if you stay with me."

10 And he inquired ^H7592 ^W-VQY3MS of the LORD ^H3068 for him , and gave ^H5414 ^VQQ3MS him victuals ^H6720 , and gave ^H5414 ^VQQ3MS him the sword ^H2719 ^GFS of Goliath ^H1555 the Philistine ^H6430 .

11 Then the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS sent ^H7971 ^W-VQY3MS to call ^H7121 Ahimelech ^H288 the priest ^H3548 , the son ^H1121 of Ahitub ^H285 , and all ^H3605 ^NMS his father ^H1 ^CMS-3MS \'s house ^H1004 ^CMS , the priests ^H3548 that ^H834 ^RPRO were in Nob ^H5011 : and they came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MP all ^H3605 ^NMS of them to ^H413 ^PREP the king ^H4428 .

12 And Saul ^H7586 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Hear ^H8085 ^VQI2MS now ^H4994 ^IJEC , thou son ^H1121 of Ahitub ^H285 . And he answered ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Here ^H2009 I am , my lord ^H113 .

13 And Saul ^H7586 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 him , Why ^H4100 ^L-IPRO have ye conspired ^H7194 against ^H5921 ^PREP-1MS me , thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS and the son ^H1121 ^W-CMS of Jesse ^H3448 , in that thou hast given ^H5414 him bread ^H3899 ^NMS , and a sword ^H2719 , and hast inquired ^H7592 of God ^H430 ^B-NMP for him , that he should rise ^H6965 against ^H413 ^PREP-1MS me , to lie in wait ^H693 , as at this ^H2088 ^D-PMS day ^H3117 ?

14 Then Ahimelech ^H288 answered ^H6030 ^W-VQY3MS the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , And who ^H4310 ^W-IPRO is so faithful ^H539 among all ^H3605 thy servants ^H5650 as David ^H1732 , which is the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS \'s son ^H2860 - in - law , and goeth ^H5493 ^W-VQPMS at ^H413 ^PREP thy bidding ^H4928 , and is honorable ^H3513 in thine house ^H1004 ?

16 And the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Thou shalt surely die ^H4191 ^VQFA , Ahimelech ^H288 , thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS , and all ^H3605 ^W-CMS thy father ^H1 \'s house ^H1004 ^CMS .

17 And the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto the footmen ^H7323 that stood ^H5324 about ^H5921 ^PREP-3MS him , Turn ^H5437 , and slay ^H4191 the priests ^H3548 of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS ; because ^H3588 ^CONJ their hand ^H3027 also ^H1571 ^CONJ is with ^H5973 ^PREP David ^H1732 ^MMS , and because ^H3588 ^CONJ they knew ^H3045 when ^H3588 ^CONJ he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS fled ^H1272 ^VQPMS , and did not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR show ^H1540 it to me ^H241 . But the servants ^H5650 of the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS would ^H14 ^VQQ3MP not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR put forth their hand ^H3027 to fall ^H6293 upon the priests ^H3548 of the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS .

18 And the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS to Doeg ^H1673 , Turn ^H5437 thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS , and fall ^H6293 upon the priests ^H3548 . And Doeg ^H1673 the Edomite ^H130 turned ^H5437 , and he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS fell ^H6293 upon the priests ^H3548 , and slew ^H4191 on that ^H1931 ^D-PPRO-3MS day ^H3117 ^B-AMS fourscore ^H8084 and five ^H2568 persons ^H376 ^NMS that did wear ^H5375 a linen ^H906 ephod ^H646 .

19 And Nob ^H5011 , the city ^H5892 ^GFS of the priests ^H3548 , smote ^H5221 he with the edge ^H6310 ^L-CMS of the sword ^H2719 ^GFS , both men ^H376 ^M-NMS and women ^H802 ^NFS , children ^H5768 and sucklings ^H3243 , and oxen ^H7794 , and asses ^H2543 , and sheep ^H7716 , with the edge ^H6310 ^L-CMS of the sword ^H2719 ^GFS .

20 And one ^H259 ^MMS of the sons ^H1121 ^NMS of Ahimelech ^H288 the son ^H1121 ^NMS of Ahitub ^H285 , named ^H8034 Abiathar ^H54 , escaped ^H4422 , and fled ^H1272 ^W-VQY3MS after ^H310 ^PREP David ^H1732 .

21 And Abiathar ^H54 showed ^H5046 ^W-VHY3MS David ^H1732 ^L-NAME that ^H3588 ^CONJ Saul ^H7586 had slain ^H2026 the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS \'s priests ^H3548 .

22 And David ^H1732 ^MMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto Abiathar ^H54 , I knew ^H3045 ^VQY1MS it that ^H1931 ^D-PPRO-3MS day ^H3117 ^B-AMS , when ^H3588 ^CONJ Doeg ^H1673 the Edomite ^H130 was there ^H8033 ^ADV , that ^H3588 ^CONJ he would surely tell ^H5046 ^VHI2MS Saul ^H7586 : I ^H595 ^PPRO-1MS have occasioned ^H5437 the death of all ^H3605 ^B-CMS the persons ^H5315 ^GFS of thy father ^H1 \'s house ^H1004 ^CMS .

23 Abide ^H3427 thou with ^H854 ^PREP-1MS me , fear ^H3372 not ^H408 ^NPAR : for ^H3588 ^CONJ he that ^H834 ^RPRO seeketh ^H1245 my life ^H5315 ^CFS-1MS seeketh ^H1245 thy life ^H5315 : but ^H3588 ^CONJ with ^H5973 me thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS shalt be in safeguard ^H4931 .
