1 Samuel 18:20 (KJV) King James Version

1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.

3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.

6 And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.

7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand.

11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.

12 And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.

13 Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

14 And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.

15 Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.

16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

17 And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD’S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.

18 And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?

19 But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul’s daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.

20 And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.

21 And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain.

22 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king’s son in law.

23 And Saul’s servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king’s son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

24 And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.

25 And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son in law: and the days were not expired.

27 Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king’s son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

28 And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him.

29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

30 Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

9 And Saul ^H7586 eyed ^H5770 David ^H1732 ^MMS from that day ^H3117 and forward ^H1973 .

13 Therefore Saul ^H7586 removed ^H5493 him from him , and made ^H7760 him his captain ^H8269 over a thousand ^H505 ^MMS ; and he went out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MS and came in ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS before ^H6440 ^L-CMP the people ^H5971 ^D-NMS .

14 And David ^H1732 behaved himself wisely ^H7919 in all ^H3605 ^L-CMS his ways ^H1870 ; and the LORD ^H3068 ^W-EDS was with ^H5973 ^PREP-3MS him .

15 Wherefore when Saul ^H7586 saw ^H7200 ^W-VIY3MS that ^H834 ^RPRO he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS behaved himself very wisely ^H7919 , he was afraid ^H1481 of him .

16 But all ^H3605 ^W-CMS Israel ^H3478 and Judah ^H3063 loved ^H157 David ^H1732 ^MMS , because ^H3588 ^CONJ he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS went out ^H3318 and came in ^H935 before ^H6440 them .

17 And Saul ^H7586 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS to ^H413 ^PREP David ^H1732 ^MMS , Behold ^H2009 ^IJEC my elder ^H1419 ^D-AFS daughter ^H1323 Merab ^H4764 , her will I give ^H5414 thee to wife ^H802 ^L-NFS : only ^H389 ^ADV be ^H1961 thou valiant ^H1121 for me , and fight ^H3898 the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS \'s battles ^H4421 . For Saul ^H7586 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Let not ^H408 ^NPAR mine hand ^H3027 ^CFS-1MS be ^H1961 ^VQI3FS upon him , but let the hand ^H3027 ^CFS of the Philistines ^H6430 be ^H1961 ^W-VQI3FS upon him .

18 And David ^H1732 ^MMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Saul ^H7586 , Who ^H4310 ^W-IPRO am I ^H595 ^PPRO-1MS ? and what ^H4310 ^W-IPRO is my life ^H2416 ^CMS-1MS , or my father ^H1 ^CMS-1MS \'s family ^H4940 in Israel ^H3478 , that ^H3588 ^CONJ I should be ^H1961 ^VQY1MS son ^H2860 - in - law to the king ^H4428 ?

19 But it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS at the time ^H6256 when Merab ^H4764 Saul ^H7586 \'s daughter ^H1323 ^CFS should have been given ^H5414 ^VQFC to David ^H1732 ^L-NAME , that she ^H1931 was given ^H5414 ^VNQ3FS unto Adriel ^H5741 the Meholathite ^H4259 to wife ^H802 .

20 And Michal ^H4324 Saul ^H7586 \'s daughter ^H1323 ^CFS loved ^H157 David ^H1732 ^MMS : and they told ^H5046 Saul ^H7586 , and the thing ^H1697 ^D-NMS pleased ^H3474 him .

21 And Saul ^H7586 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , I will give ^H5414 ^VQY1MS-3FS him her , that she may be ^H1961 ^W-VQI3FS a snare ^H4170 to him , and that the hand ^H3027 ^CFS of the Philistines ^H6430 ^TMS may be ^H1961 ^W-VQI3FS against him . Wherefore Saul ^H7586 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS to ^H413 ^PREP David ^H1732 ^MMS , Thou shalt this day ^H3117 ^D-NMS be my son ^H2860 - in - law in the one of the twain ^H8147 .

22 And Saul ^H7586 commanded ^H6680 ^W-VPY3MS his servants ^H5650 , saying , Commune ^H1696 with ^H413 ^PREP David ^H1732 ^MMS secretly ^H3909 , and say ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS hath delight ^H2654 in thee , and all ^H3605 ^W-CMS his servants ^H5650 love ^H157 thee : now ^H6258 ^W-ADV therefore be the king ^H4428 \'s son ^H2860 - in - law .

23 And Saul ^H7586 \'s servants ^H5650 spoke ^H1696 those ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP words ^H1697 ^AMP in the ears ^H241 of David ^H1732 . And David ^H1732 ^MMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Seemeth ^H5869 it to you a light ^H7043 thing to be a king ^H4428 \'s son ^H2860 - in - law , seeing that I ^H595 ^W-PPRO-1MS am a poor ^H7326 man ^H376 ^NMS , and lightly esteemed ^H7034 ?

24 And the servants ^H5650 of Saul ^H7586 told ^H5046 him , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , On this ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP manner ^H1697 spoke ^H1696 ^VPQ3MS David ^H1732 .

25 And Saul ^H7586 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Thus ^H3541 shall ye say ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS to David ^H1732 ^L-NAME , The king ^H4428 desireth ^H2656 not ^H369 ^ADV any dowry ^H4119 , but ^H3588 ^CONJ a hundred ^H3967 foreskins ^H6190 of the Philistines ^H6430 ^TMS , to be avenged ^H5358 of the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS \'s enemies ^H341 . But Saul ^H7586 thought ^H2803 to make David ^H1732 ^L-NAME fall ^H5307 by the hand ^H3027 ^B-CFS of the Philistines ^H6430 .

28 And Saul ^H7586 saw ^H7200 ^W-VIY3MS and knew ^H3045 ^W-VQY3MS that ^H3588 ^CONJ the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS was with ^H5973 ^PREP David ^H1732 ^MMS , and that Michal ^H4324 Saul ^H7586 \'s daughter ^H1323 ^CFS loved ^H157 him .

29 And Saul ^H7586 was yet ^H5750 ^ADV the more ^H3254 afraid ^H3372 of ^M-CMP David ^H1732 ; and Saul ^H7586 became ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS David ^H1732 ^MMS \'s enemy ^H341 continually ^H3605 ^NMS .

30 Then the princes ^H8269 ^CMP of the Philistines ^H6430 went forth ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MP : and it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS , after ^H167 they went forth ^H3318 , that David ^H1732 ^MMS behaved himself more wisely ^H7919 than all ^H3605 ^M-CMS the servants ^H5650 of Saul ^H7586 ; so that his name ^H8034 ^CMS-3MS was much ^H3966 ^ADV set by ^H3365 .
