1. This is the LORD's message that was given to Joel the son of Pethuel:
1. The word H1697 of the LORD H3068 that H834 came H1961 to H413 Joel H3100 the son H1121 of Pethuel H6602 .
2. Listen to this, you elders; pay attention, all inhabitants of the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your whole life or in the lifetime of your ancestors?
2. Hear H8085 this H2063 , ye old men H2205 , and give ear H238 , all H3605 ye inhabitants H3427 of the land H776 . Hath this H2063 been H1961 in your days H3117 , or even H518 in the days H3117 of your fathers H1 ?
3. Tell your children about it, have your children tell their children, and their children the following generation.
3. Tell H5608 ye your children H1121 of H5921 it , and let your children H1121 tell their children H1121 , and their children H1121 another H312 generation H1755 .
4. What the gazam-locust left the 'arbeh-locust consumed, what the 'arbeh-locust left the yeleq-locust consumed, and what the yeleq-locust left the hasil-locust consumed!
4. That which the palmerworm H1501 hath left H3499 hath the locust H697 eaten H398 ; and that which the locust H697 hath left H3499 hath the cankerworm H3218 eaten H398 ; and that which the cankerworm H3218 hath left H3499 hath the caterpillar H2625 eaten H398 .
5. Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you wine drinkers, because the sweet wine has been taken away from you.
5. Awake H6974 , ye drunkards H7910 , and weep H1058 ; and howl H3213 , all H3605 ye drinkers H8354 of wine H3196 , because of H5921 the new wine H6071 ; for H3588 it is cut off H3772 from your mouth H4480 H6310 .
6. For a nation has invaded our land. There are so many of them they are too numerous to count. Their teeth are like those of a lion; they tear apart their prey like a lioness.
6. For H3588 a nation H1471 is come up H5927 upon H5921 my land H776 , strong H6099 , and without H369 number H4557 , whose teeth H8127 are the teeth H8127 of a lion H738 , and he hath the cheek teeth H4973 of a great lion H3833 .
7. They have destroyed our vines; they have turned our fig trees into mere splinters. They have completely stripped off the bark and thrown them aside; the twigs are stripped bare.
7. He hath laid H7760 my vine H1612 waste H8047 , and barked H7111 my fig tree H8384 : he hath made it clean bare H2834 H2834 , and cast it away H7993 ; the branches H8299 thereof are made white H3835 .
8. Wail like a young virgin clothed in sackcloth, lamenting the death of her husband-to-be.
8. Lament H421 like a virgin H1330 girded H2296 with sackcloth H8242 for H5921 the husband H1167 of her youth H5271 .
9. No one brings grain offerings or drink offerings to the temple of the LORD anymore. So the priests, those who serve the LORD, are in mourning.
9. The meat offering H4503 and the drink offering H5262 is cut off H3772 from the house H4480 H1004 of the LORD H3068 ; the priests H3548 , the LORD H3068 's ministers H8334 , mourn H56 .
10. The crops of the fields have been destroyed. The ground is in mourning because the grain has perished. The fresh wine has dried up; the olive oil languishes.
10. The field H7704 is wasted H7703 , the land H127 mourneth H56 ; for H3588 the corn H1715 is wasted H7703 : the new wine H8492 is dried up H3001 , the oil H3323 languisheth H535 .
11. Be distressed, farmers; wail, vinedressers, over the wheat and the barley. For the harvest of the field has perished.
11. Be ye ashamed H954 , O ye husbandmen H406 ; howl H3213 , O ye vinedressers H3755 , for H5921 the wheat H2406 and for H5921 the barley H8184 ; because H3588 the harvest H7105 of the field H7704 is perished H6 .
12. The vine has dried up; the fig tree languishes the pomegranate, date, and apple as well. In fact, all the trees of the field have dried up. Indeed, the joy of the people has dried up!
12. The vine H1612 is dried up H3001 , and the fig tree H8384 languisheth H535 ; the pomegranate tree H7416 , the palm tree H8558 also H1571 , and the apple tree H8598 , even all H3605 the trees H6086 of the field H7704 , are withered H3001 : because H3588 joy H8342 is withered away H3001 from H4480 the sons H1121 of men H120 .
13. Get dressed and lament, you priests! Wail, you who minister at the altar! Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you servants of my God, because no one brings grain offerings or drink offerings to the temple of your God anymore.
13. Gird H2296 yourselves , and lament H5594 , ye priests H3548 : howl H3213 , ye ministers H8334 of the altar H4196 : come H935 , lie all night H3885 in sackcloth H8242 , ye ministers H8334 of my God H430 : for H3588 the meat offering H4503 and the drink offering H5262 is withheld H4513 from the house H4480 H1004 of your God H430 .
14. Announce a holy fast; proclaim a sacred assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the temple of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.
14. Sanctify H6942 ye a fast H6685 , call H7121 a solemn assembly H6116 , gather H622 the elders H2205 and all H3605 the inhabitants H3427 of the land H776 into the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 your God H430 , and cry H2199 unto H413 the LORD H3068 ,
15. How awful that day will be! For the day of the LORD is near; it will come as destruction from the Divine Destroyer.
15. Alas H162 for the day H3117 ! for H3588 the day H3117 of the LORD H3068 is at hand H7138 , and as a destruction H7701 from the Almighty H4480 H7706 shall it come H935 .
16. Our food has been cut off right before our eyes! There is no longer any joy or gladness in the temple of our God!
16. Is not H3808 the meat H400 cut off H3772 before H5048 our eyes H5869 , yea , joy H8057 and gladness H1524 from the house H4480 H1004 of our God H430 ?
17. The grains of seed have shriveled beneath their shovels. Storehouses have been decimated and granaries have been torn down, for the grain has dried up.
17. The seed H6507 is rotten H5685 under H8478 their clods H4053 , the garners H214 are laid desolate H8074 , the barns H4460 are broken down H2040 ; for H3588 the corn H1715 is withered H3001 .
18. Listen to the cattle groan! The herds of livestock wander around in confusion because they have no pasture. Even the flocks of sheep are suffering.
18. How H4100 do the beasts H929 groan H584 ! the herds H5739 of cattle H1241 are perplexed H943 , because H3588 they have no H369 pasture H4829 ; yea H1571 , the flocks H5739 of sheep H6629 are made desolate H816 .
19. To you, O LORD, I call out for help, for fire has burned up the grassy pastures, flames have razed all the trees in the fields.
19. O LORD H3068 , to H413 thee will I cry H7121 : for H3588 the fire H784 hath devoured H398 the pastures H4999 of the wilderness H4057 , and the flame H3852 hath burned H3857 all H3605 the trees H6086 of the field H7704 .
20. Even the wild animals cry out to you; for the river beds have dried up; fire has destroyed the grassy pastures.
20. The beasts H929 of the field H7704 cry H6165 also H1571 unto H413 thee: for H3588 the rivers H650 of waters H4325 are dried up H3001 , and the fire H784 hath devoured H398 the pastures H4999 of the wilderness H4057 .
