Genesis 47:3 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Then Joseph went to see Pharaoh and told him, "My father and my brothers have arrived from the land of Canaan. They have come with all their flocks and herds and possessions, and they are now in the region of Goshen."

2 Joseph took five of his brothers with him and presented them to Pharaoh.

3 And Pharaoh asked the brothers, "What is your occupation?" They replied, "We, your servants, are shepherds, just like our ancestors.

4 We have come to live here in Egypt for a while, for there is no pasture for our flocks in Canaan. The famine is very severe there. So please, we request permission to live in the region of Goshen."

5 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Now that your father and brothers have joined you here,

6 choose any place in the entire land of Egypt for them to live. Give them the best land of Egypt. Let them live in the region of Goshen. And if any of them have special skills, put them in charge of my livestock, too."

7 Then Joseph brought in his father, Jacob, and presented him to Pharaoh. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

8 "How old are you?" Pharaoh asked him.

9 Jacob replied, "I have traveled this earth for 130 hard years. But my life has been short compared to the lives of my ancestors."

10 Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh again before leaving his court.

11 So Joseph assigned the best land of Egypt-- the region of Rameses-- to his father and his brothers, and he settled them there, just as Pharaoh had commanded.

12 And Joseph provided food for his father and his brothers in amounts appropriate to the number of their dependents, including the smallest children.

13 Meanwhile, the famine became so severe that all the food was used up, and people were starving throughout the lands of Egypt and Canaan.

14 By selling grain to the people, Joseph eventually collected all the money in Egypt and Canaan, and he put the money in Pharaoh's treasury.

15 When the people of Egypt and Canaan ran out of money, all the Egyptians came to Joseph. "Our money is gone!" they cried. "But please give us food, or we will die before your very eyes!"

16 Joseph replied, "Since your money is gone, bring me your livestock. I will give you food in exchange for your livestock."

17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph in exchange for food. In exchange for their horses, flocks of sheep and goats, herds of cattle, and donkeys, Joseph provided them with food for another year.

18 But that year ended, and the next year they came again and said, "We cannot hide the truth from you, my lord. Our money is gone, and all our livestock and cattle are yours. We have nothing left to give but our bodies and our land.

19 Why should we die before your very eyes? Buy us and our land in exchange for food; we offer our land and ourselves as slaves for Pharaoh. Just give us grain so we may live and not die, and so the land does not become empty and desolate."

20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh. All the Egyptians sold him their fields because the famine was so severe, and soon all the land belonged to Pharaoh.

21 As for the people, he made them all slaves, from one end of Egypt to the other.

22 The only land he did not buy was the land belonging to the priests. They received an allotment of food directly from Pharaoh, so they didn't need to sell their land.

23 Then Joseph said to the people, "Look, today I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh. I will provide you with seed so you can plant the fields.

24 Then when you harvest it, one-fifth of your crop will belong to Pharaoh. You may keep the remaining four-fifths as seed for your fields and as food for you, your households, and your little ones."

25 "You have saved our lives!" they exclaimed. "May it please you, my lord, to let us be Pharaoh's servants."

26 Joseph then issued a decree still in effect in the land of Egypt, that Pharaoh should receive one-fifth of all the crops grown on his land. Only the land belonging to the priests was not given to Pharaoh.

27 Meanwhile, the people of Israel settled in the region of Goshen in Egypt. There they acquired property, and they were fruitful, and their population grew rapidly.

28 Jacob lived for seventeen years after his arrival in Egypt, so he lived 147 years in all.

29 As the time of his death drew near, Jacob called for his son Joseph and said to him, "Please do me this favor. Put your hand under my thigh and swear that you will treat me with unfailing love by honoring this last request: Do not bury me in Egypt.

30 When I die, please take my body out of Egypt and bury me with my ancestors." So Joseph promised, "I will do as you ask."

31 "Swear that you will do it," Jacob insisted. So Joseph gave his oath, and Jacob bowed humbly at the head of his bed.

2 And he took ^H3947 ^VQQ3MS some ^H7097 of his brethren ^H251 ^NMP-3MS , even five ^H2568 men ^H376 , and presented ^H3322 them unto ^H6440 ^L-CMP Pharaoh ^H6547 .

3 And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP his brethren ^H251 ^NMP-3MS , What ^H4100 ^IPRO is your occupation ^H4639 ? And they said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , Thy servants ^H5650 are shepherds ^H7462 ^VQPMS , both ^H1571 ^CONJ we ^H587 ^PPRO-1MP , and also ^H1571 ^CONJ our fathers ^H1 .

4 They said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP moreover unto ^H413 ^PREP Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , For to sojourn ^H1481 ^L-VQFC in the land ^H776 ^B-NFS are we come ^H935 ; for ^RPRO thy servants ^H5650 have no ^H369 ^NPAR pasture ^H4829 for their flocks ^H6629 ; for ^H3588 ^CONJ the famine ^H7458 ^D-NMS is sore ^H3515 ^AMS in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Canaan ^H3667 ^EMS : now ^H6258 ^W-ADV therefore , we pray thee ^H4994 ^IJEC , let thy servants ^H5650 dwell ^H3427 in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Goshen ^H1657 .

5 And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS spoke ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Joseph ^H3130 , saying ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Thy father ^H1 ^NMS and thy brethren ^H251 are come ^H935 ^VQQ3MP unto ^H413 ^PREP thee :

6 The land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS is before ^H6440 ^L-CMP-2MS thee ; in the best ^H4315 of the land ^H776 ^D-GFS make thy father ^H1 ^NMS and brethren ^H251 ^CMP-2MS to dwell ^H3427 ; in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Goshen ^H1657 let them dwell ^H3427 ^VQY3MP : and if ^H518 ^W-PART thou knowest ^H3045 ^VQQ2MS any men ^H376 ^CMP of activity ^H2428 ^NMS among them , then make ^H7760 them rulers ^H8269 ^CMP over my ^H5921 ^PREP cattle ^H4735 ^NMS .

7 And Joseph ^H3130 brought in ^W-VHY3MS Jacob ^H3290 his father ^H1 ^CMS-3MS , and set ^H5975 him before ^H6440 ^L-CMP Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS : and Jacob ^H3290 blessed ^H1288 ^W-VNY3MS Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS .

8 And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Jacob ^H3290 , How ^H4100 ^K-IGAT old ^H3117 ^CMP art thou ?

9 And Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , The days ^H3117 ^CMP of the years ^H8141 of my pilgrimage ^H4033 are a hundred ^H3967 ^W-BFS and thirty ^H7970 ^MMP years ^H8141 ^NFS : few ^H4592 ^AMS and evil ^H7451 have the days ^H3117 ^CMP of the years ^H8141 of my life ^H2416 ^CMS-1MS been ^H1961 ^VQQ3MP , and have not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR attained unto ^H5381 the days ^H3117 ^CMP of the years ^H8141 of the life ^H2416 of my fathers ^H1 in the days ^H3117 ^B-CMP of their pilgrimage ^H4033 .

10 And Jacob ^H3290 blessed ^H1288 ^W-VNY3MS Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , and went out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MS from before ^H6440 ^ML-CMP Pharaoh ^H6547 .

11 And Joseph ^H3130 placed ^H3427 his father ^H1 ^CMS-3MS and his brethren ^H251 ^NMP-3MS , and gave ^H5414 ^W-VQQ3MS them a possession ^H272 in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS , in the best ^H4315 of the land ^H776 ^D-GFS , in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Rameses ^H7486 , as ^H834 ^K-RPRO Pharaoh ^H6547 had commanded ^H6680 ^VPQ3MS .

12 And Joseph ^H3130 nourished ^H3557 his father ^H1 ^CMS-3MS , and his brethren ^H251 ^NMP-3MS , and all ^H3605 ^NMS his father ^H1 ^CMS-3MS \'s household ^H1004 ^CMS , with bread ^H3899 ^NMS , according to ^H6310 ^L-CMS their families ^H2945 .

13 And there was no ^H369 ^NPAR bread ^H3899 in all ^H3605 ^B-CMS the land ^H776 ^D-GFS ; for ^H3588 ^CONJ the famine ^H7458 ^D-NMS was very ^H3966 ^ADV sore ^H3515 ^AMS , so that the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS and all the land ^H776 ^W-NFS of Canaan ^H3667 ^LMS fainted ^H3856 by reason of ^M-CMP the famine ^H7458 .

14 And Joseph ^H3130 gathered up ^H3950 all ^H3605 ^NMS the money ^H3701 that was found ^H4672 in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS , and in the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667 ^LMS , for the corn ^H7668 which ^H834 ^RPRO they ^H1992 ^PPRO-3MP bought ^H7666 : and Joseph ^H3130 brought ^H935 ^W-VHY3MS the money ^H3701 into Pharaoh ^H6547 \'s house ^H1004 .

15 And when money ^H3701 failed ^H8552 in the land ^H776 ^M-NFS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS , and in the land ^H776 of Canaan ^H3667 ^LMS , all ^H3605 ^CMS the Egyptians ^H4714 ^EFS came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MP unto ^H413 ^PREP Joseph ^H3130 , and said ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Give ^H3051 us bread ^H3899 ^NMS : for why ^H4100 ^WL-IGAT should we die ^H4191 in thy presence ^H5048 ? for ^H3588 ^CONJ the money ^H3701 ^NMS faileth ^H656 .

16 And Joseph ^H3130 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Give ^H3051 ^VQI2MP your cattle ^H4735 ; and I will give ^H5414 you for your cattle ^H4735 , if ^H518 ^PART money ^H3701 ^NMS fail ^H656 .

17 And they brought ^H935 their cattle ^H4735 unto ^H413 ^PREP Joseph ^H3130 : and Joseph ^H3130 gave ^H5414 ^W-VQQ3MS them bread ^H3899 ^NMS in exchange for horses ^H5483 , and for the flocks ^H4735 , and for the cattle ^H4735 of the herds ^H1241 ^D-NMS , and for the asses ^H2543 : and he fed ^H5095 them with bread ^H3899 for all ^H3605 ^B-CMS their cattle ^H4735 for that ^H1931 year ^H8141 .

18 When that ^H1931 ^D-PPRO-3FS year ^H8141 was ended ^H8552 , they came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MP unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him the second ^H8145 ^D-ONUM year ^H8141 , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP unto him , We will not ^H3808 ^ADV hide ^H3582 it from ^H4480 my lord ^H113 , how that ^PART our money ^H3701 is spent ^H8552 ; my lord ^H113 also hath ^H413 ^PREP our herds ^H4735 of cattle ^H929 ^D-NFS ; there is not ^H3808 ^NADV aught left ^H7604 ^VNQ3MS in the sight ^H6440 ^L-CMP of my lord ^H113 , but ^H1115 ^PREP our bodies ^H1472 , and our lands ^H127 :

19 Wherefore ^H4100 ^L-IPRO shall we die ^H4191 before thine eyes ^H5869 , both ^H1571 ^CONJ we ^H587 ^PPRO-1MP and ^H1571 ^CONJ our land ^H127 ? buy ^H7069 us and our land ^H127 for bread ^H3899 , and we ^H587 ^PPRO-1MP and our land ^H127 will be ^H1961 servants ^H5650 ^NMP unto Pharaoh ^H6547 : and give ^H5414 us seed ^H2233 ^NMS , that we may live ^H2421 , and not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR die ^H4191 , that the land ^H127 be not desolate ^H3456 .

20 And Joseph ^H3130 bought ^H7069 all ^H3605 ^NMS the land ^H127 of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS for Pharaoh ^H6547 ; for ^H3588 ^CONJ the Egyptians ^H4714 ^EFS sold ^H4376 every man ^H376 his field ^H7704 , because ^H3588 ^CONJ the famine ^H7458 ^D-NMS prevailed ^H2388 over ^H5921 them : so the land ^H776 ^D-GFS became ^H1961 ^W-VQY3FS Pharaoh ^H6547 \'s .

21 And as for the people ^H5971 , he removed ^H5674 them to cities ^H5892 from one end ^H7097 ^M-CMS of the borders ^H1366 of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS even to ^H5704 ^W-PREP the other end ^H7097 thereof .

22 Only ^H7535 ^ADV the land ^H127 of the priests ^H3548 bought ^H7069 he not ^H3808 ^NADV ; for ^H3588 ^CONJ the priests ^H3548 had a portion ^H2706 ^NMS assigned them of Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , and did eat ^H398 their portion ^H2706 which ^H834 ^RPRO Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS gave ^H5414 ^VQQ3MS them : wherefore ^H3651 ^ADV they sold ^H4376 not ^H3808 ^NADV their lands ^H127 .

23 Then Joseph ^H3130 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP the people ^H5971 , Behold ^H2005 ^IJEC , I have bought ^H7069 ^VQQ1MS you this day ^H3117 ^D-AMS and your land ^H127 for Pharaoh ^H6547 : lo ^H1887 , here is seed ^H2233 ^NMS for you , and ye shall sow ^H2232 the land ^H127 ^D-NFS .

24 And it shall come to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQQ3MS in the increase ^H8393 , that ye shall give ^H5414 the fifth ^H2549 part unto Pharaoh ^H6547 , and four ^H702 ^W-BFS parts ^H3027 shall be ^H1961 ^W-VQQ3MS your own , for seed ^H2233 of the field ^H7704 ^D-NMS , and for your food ^H400 , and for them ^H834 of your households ^H1004 , and for food ^H398 for your little ones ^H2945 .

25 And they said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP , Thou hast saved our lives ^H2421 : let us find ^H4672 ^VNQ3MS grace ^H2580 ^NMS in the sight ^H5869 ^B-CMP of my lord ^H113 , and we will be ^H1961 Pharaoh ^H6547 \'s servants ^H5650 ^NMP .

26 And Joseph ^H3130 made ^H7760 ^W-VQY3MS it a law ^H2706 over ^H5921 ^PREP the land ^H127 of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS unto ^H5704 ^PREP this ^H2088 ^D-PMS day ^H3117 ^D-AMS , that Pharaoh ^H6547 should have the fifth ^H2569 part ; except ^H7535 ^ADV the land ^H127 of the priests ^H3548 only ^H905 ^L-CMS-3MP , which became ^H1961 ^VQQ3FS not ^H3808 ^NADV Pharaoh ^H6547 \'s .

27 And Israel ^H3478 dwelt ^H3427 ^W-VQY3MS in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS , in the country ^H776 ^B-GFS of Goshen ^H1657 ; and they had possessions ^H270 therein , and grew ^H6509 , and multiplied ^H7235 ^W-VQY3MP exceedingly ^H3966 ^ADV .

28 And Jacob ^H3290 lived ^H2421 ^W-VQY3MS in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS seventeen ^H7651 years ^H8141 ^NFS : so the whole age ^H3117 of Jacob ^H3290 was ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS a hundred ^H3967 ^W-BFS forty ^H705 ^W-MMP and seven ^H7651 ^MFS years ^H8141 .

29 And the time ^H3117 drew nigh ^H7126 that Israel ^H3478 must die ^H4191 ^L-VQFC : and he called ^H7121 ^W-VQY3MS his son ^H1121 Joseph ^H3130 , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto him , If ^H518 ^PART now ^H4994 ^IJEC I have found ^H4672 ^VQQ1MS grace ^H2580 ^NMS in thy sight ^H5869 , put ^H7760 , I pray thee ^H4994 ^IJEC , thy hand ^H3027 ^CFS-2MS under ^H8478 ^NMS my thigh ^H3409 , and deal ^H6213 kindly ^H2617 ^NMS and truly ^H571 with ^H5973 me ; bury ^H6912 me not ^H408 ^NPAR , I pray thee ^H4994 ^IJEC , in Egypt ^H4714 :

30 But I will lie ^H7901 with ^H5973 ^PREP my fathers ^H1 , and thou shalt carry ^H5375 me out of Egypt ^H4714 ^M-TFS , and bury ^H6912 me in their burial place ^H6900 . And he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , I ^H595 ^PPRO-1MS will do ^H6213 ^VQY1MS as thou hast said ^H1697 .

31 And he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Swear ^H7650 unto me . And he swore ^H7650 unto him . And Israel ^H3478 bowed himself ^H7812 upon ^H5921 ^PREP the bed ^H4296 \'s head ^H7218 ^NMS .
