Ezekiel 18:17 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Then another message came to me from the LORD:

2 "Why do you quote this proverb concerning the land of Israel: 'The parents have eaten sour grapes, but their children's mouths pucker at the taste'?

3 As surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, you will not quote this proverb anymore in Israel.

4 For all people are mine to judge-- both parents and children alike. And this is my rule: The person who sins is the one who will die.

5 "Suppose a certain man is righteous and does what is just and right.

6 He does not feast in the mountains before Israel's idols or worship them. He does not commit adultery or have intercourse with a woman during her menstrual period.

7 He is a merciful creditor, not keeping the items given as security by poor debtors. He does not rob the poor but instead gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for the needy.

8 He grants loans without interest, stays away from injustice, is honest and fair when judging others,

9 and faithfully obeys my decrees and regulations. Anyone who does these things is just and will surely live, says the Sovereign LORD.

10 "But suppose that man has a son who grows up to be a robber or murderer and refuses to do what is right.

11 And that son does all the evil things his father would never do-- he worships idols on the mountains, commits adultery,

12 oppresses the poor and helpless, steals from debtors by refusing to let them redeem their security, worships idols, commits detestable sins,

13 and lends money at excessive interest. Should such a sinful person live? No! He must die and must take full blame.

14 "But suppose that sinful son, in turn, has a son who sees his father's wickedness and decides against that kind of life.

15 This son refuses to worship idols on the mountains and does not commit adultery.

16 He does not exploit the poor, but instead is fair to debtors and does not rob them. He gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for the needy.

17 He helps the poor, does not lend money at interest, and obeys all my regulations and decrees. Such a person will not die because of his father's sins; he will surely live.

18 But the father will die for his many sins-- for being cruel, robbing people, and doing what was clearly wrong among his people.

19 " 'What?' you ask. 'Doesn't the child pay for the parent's sins?' No! For if the child does what is just and right and keeps my decrees, that child will surely live.

20 The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the parent's sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child's sins. Righteous people will be rewarded for their own righteous behavior, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness.

21 But if wicked people turn away from all their sins and begin to obey my decrees and do what is just and right, they will surely live and not die.

22 All their past sins will be forgotten, and they will live because of the righteous things they have done.

23 "Do you think that I like to see wicked people die? says the Sovereign LORD. Of course not! I want them to turn from their wicked ways and live.

24 However, if righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and start doing sinful things and act like other sinners, should they be allowed to live? No, of course not! All their righteous acts will be forgotten, and they will die for their sins.

25 "Yet you say, 'The Lord isn't doing what's right!' Listen to me, O people of Israel. Am I the one not doing what's right, or is it you?

26 When righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and start doing sinful things, they will die for it. Yes, they will die because of their sinful deeds.

27 And if wicked people turn from their wickedness, obey the law, and do what is just and right, they will save their lives.

28 They will live because they thought it over and decided to turn from their sins. Such people will not die.

29 And yet the people of Israel keep saying, 'The Lord isn't doing what's right!' O people of Israel, it is you who are not doing what's right, not I.

30 "Therefore, I will judge each of you, O people of Israel, according to your actions, says the Sovereign LORD. Repent, and turn from your sins. Don't let them destroy you!

31 Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O people of Israel?

32 I don't want you to die, says the Sovereign LORD. Turn back and live!

3 As I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS live ^H2416 ^AMS , saith ^H5002 the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 , ye shall not ^H518 ^PART have ^H1961 ^VQY3MS occasion any more ^H5750 ^ADV to use ^H4911 this ^H2088 ^D-PMS proverb ^H4912 in Israel ^H3478 .

4 Behold ^H2005 ^IJEC , all ^H3605 ^NMS souls ^H5315 are mine ; as the soul ^H5315 of the father ^H1 , so also the soul ^H5315 of the son ^H1121 is mine : the soul ^H5315 ^D-NFS that sinneth ^H2398 , it ^H1931 ^PPRO-3FS shall die ^H4191 .

5 But if ^H3588 ^CONJ a man ^H376 ^W-NMS be ^H1961 ^VQY3MS just ^H6662 ^AMS , and do ^H6213 ^W-VQQ3MS that which is lawful ^H4941 ^NMS and right ^H6666 ,

10 If he beget ^H3205 a son ^H1121 ^NMS that is a robber ^H6530 , a shedder ^H8210 ^VQPMS of blood ^H1818 ^NMS , and that doeth ^H6213 ^W-VQQ3MS the like ^H251 ^NMS to any one ^H259 of these ^H428 things ,

11 And that ^H1931 ^W-PPRO-3MS doeth ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS not ^H3808 ^NADV any ^H3605 ^NMS of those ^H428 ^PMP duties , but ^H3588 ^CONJ even ^H1571 ^CONJ hath eaten ^H398 ^VQQ3MS upon ^H413 ^PREP the mountains ^H2022 , and defiled ^H2930 his neighbor ^H7453 ^NMS-3MS \'s wife ^H802 ^CFS ,

12 Hath oppressed ^H3238 the poor ^H6041 ^AMS and needy ^H34 ^W-AMS , hath spoiled ^H1497 by violence ^H1500 , hath not ^H3808 ^NADV restored ^H7725 ^VHY3MS the pledge ^H2258 , and hath lifted up ^H5375 ^VQQ3MS his eyes ^H5869 ^CMD-3MS to ^H413 ^W-PREP the idols ^H1544 , hath committed ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS abomination ^H8441 ,

13 Hath given forth ^H5414 ^VQQ3MS upon usury ^H5392 , and hath taken ^H3947 ^VQQ3MS increase ^H8636 : shall he then live ^H2421 ? he shall not ^H3808 ^NADV live ^H2421 : he hath done ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS all ^H3605 ^NMS these ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP abominations ^H8441 ; he shall surely die ^H4191 ^VQFA ; his blood ^H1818 shall be ^H1961 upon him .

14 Now , lo ^H2009 ^IJEC , if he beget ^H3205 ^VHQ3MS a son ^H1121 ^NMS , that seeth ^H7200 ^W-VIY3MS all ^H3605 ^NMS his father ^H1 ^CMS-3MS \'s sins ^H2403 which ^H834 ^RPRO he hath done ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS , and considereth ^H7200 ^W-VIY3MS , and doeth ^H6213 ^VQY3MS not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR such like ,

15 That hath not ^H3808 ^NADV eaten ^H398 upon ^H5921 ^PREP the mountains ^H2022 , neither ^H3808 ^NADV hath lifted up ^H5375 ^VQQ3MS his eyes ^H5869 ^W-CFD-3MS to ^H413 ^PREP the idols ^H1544 of the house ^H1004 ^CMS of Israel ^H3478 , hath not ^H3808 ^NADV defiled ^H2930 his neighbor ^H7453 ^NMS-3MS \'s wife ^H802 ^CFS ,

16 Neither ^H3808 ^NADV hath oppressed ^H3238 any ^H376 ^W-NMS , hath not ^H3808 ^NADV withheld ^H2254 the pledge ^H2258 , neither ^H3808 ^NADV hath spoiled ^H1497 by violence ^H1500 , but hath given ^H5414 his bread ^H3899 ^CMS-3MS to the hungry ^H7457 , and hath covered ^H3680 ^VPQ3MS the naked ^H5903 with a garment ^H899 ,

17 That hath taken off ^H7725 ^VHQ3MS his hand ^H3027 ^CFS-3MS from the poor ^H6041 , that hath not ^H3808 ^NADV received ^H3947 ^VQQ3MS usury ^H5392 nor increase ^H8636 , hath executed ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS my judgments ^H4941 , hath walked ^H1980 in my statutes ^H2708 ; he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS shall not ^H3808 ^NADV die ^H4191 ^VQY3MS for the iniquity ^H5771 of his father ^H1 ^CMS-3MS , he shall surely live ^H2421 .

18 As for his father ^H1 ^CMS-3MS , because ^H3588 ^CONJ he cruelly oppressed ^H6231 , spoiled ^H1497 ^VQQ3MS his brother ^H251 ^NMS by violence ^H1499 , and did ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS that which ^H834 ^W-RPRO is not ^H3808 ^NADV good ^H2896 ^AMS among ^H8432 ^B-NMS his people ^H5971 , lo ^H2009 ^IJEC , even he shall die ^H4191 in his iniquity ^H5771 .

19 Yet say ^H559 ye , Why ^H4069 ? doth not ^H3808 ^NADV the son ^H1121 bear ^H5375 ^VQQ3MS the iniquity ^H5771 of the father ^H1 ? When the son ^H1121 hath done ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS that which is lawful ^H4941 ^NMS and right ^H6666 , and hath kept ^H8104 all ^H3605 ^NMS my statutes ^H2708 , and hath done ^H6213 them , he shall surely live ^H2421 .

20 The soul ^H5315 ^D-NFS that sinneth ^H2398 , it ^H1931 ^PPRO-3FS shall die ^H4191 . The son ^H1121 ^NMS shall not ^H3808 ^NADV bear ^H5375 ^VQY3MS the iniquity ^H5771 of the father ^H1 , neither ^H3808 ^NADV shall the father ^H1 bear ^H5375 ^VQY3MS the iniquity ^H5771 of the son ^H1121 : the righteousness ^H6666 of the righteous ^H6662 shall be ^H1961 ^VQY2MS upon ^H5921 ^PREP-3MS him , and the wickedness ^H7564 of the wicked ^H7563 shall be ^H1961 upon ^H5921 ^PREP-3MS him .

21 But if ^H3588 ^CONJ the wicked ^H7563 will turn ^H7725 ^VQY3MS from all ^H3605 ^NMS his sins ^H2403 that ^H834 ^RPRO he hath committed ^H6213 ^W-VQQ3MS , and keep ^H8104 all ^H3605 ^NMS my statutes ^H2708 , and do ^H6213 ^W-VQQ3MS that which is lawful ^H4941 ^NMS and right ^H6666 , he shall surely live ^H2421 , he shall not ^H3808 ^NADV die ^H4191 .

22 All ^H3605 ^NMS his transgressions ^H6588 that ^H834 ^RPRO he hath committed ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS , they shall not ^H3808 ^NADV be mentioned ^H2142 unto him : in his righteousness ^H6666 that ^H834 ^RPRO he hath done ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS he shall live ^H2421 .

23 Have I any pleasure at all ^H2654 that the wicked ^H7563 ^AMS should die ^H4194 ? saith ^H5002 the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 : and not ^H3808 ^D-NPAR that he should return ^H7725 from his ways ^H1870 , and live ^H2421 ?

24 But when the righteous ^H6662 ^AMS turneth away ^H7725 from his righteousness ^H6666 , and committeth ^H6213 ^W-VQQ3MS iniquity ^H5766 ^NMS , and doeth ^H6213 ^W-VQQ3MS according to all ^H3605 ^NMS the abominations ^H8441 that ^H834 ^RPRO the wicked ^H7563 man doeth ^H6213 ^W-VQQ3MS , shall he live ^H2421 ? All ^H3605 ^NMS his righteousness ^H6666 that ^H834 ^RPRO he hath done ^H6213 ^W-VQQ3MS shall not ^H3808 ^NADV be mentioned ^H2142 : in his trespass ^H4604 that ^H834 ^RPRO he hath trespassed ^H4603 , and in his sin ^H2403 that ^H834 ^RPRO he hath sinned ^H2398 ^VQQ3MS , in them shall he die ^H4191 .

25 Yet ye say ^H559 , The way ^H1870 ^NMS of the Lord ^H136 ^EDS is not equal ^H8505 . Hear ^H8085 ^VQI2MP now ^H4994 ^IJEC , O house ^H1004 ^CMS of Israel ^H3478 ; Is not ^H3808 ^NADV my way ^H1870 ^NMS equal ^H8505 ? are not ^H3808 ^NADV your ways ^H1870 ^NMS unequal ^H8505 ?

26 When a righteous ^H6662 ^AMS man turneth away ^H7725 from his righteousness ^H6666 , and committeth ^H6213 ^W-VQQ3MS iniquity ^H5766 ^NMS , and dieth ^H4191 in ^H5921 ^PREP-3MP them ; for his iniquity ^H5766 that ^H834 ^RPRO he hath done ^H6213 ^W-VQQ3MS shall he die ^H4191 .

27 Again , when the wicked ^H7563 ^AMS man turneth away ^H7725 from his wickedness ^H7564 that ^H834 ^RPRO he hath committed ^H6213 ^W-VQY3MS , and doeth ^H6213 ^W-VQY3MS that which is lawful ^H4941 ^NMS and right ^H6666 , he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS shall save his soul alive ^H2421 .

28 Because he considereth ^H7200 , and turneth away ^H7725 from all ^H3605 ^M-CMS his transgressions ^H6588 that ^H834 ^RPRO he hath committed ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS , he shall surely live ^H2421 , he shall not ^H3808 ^NADV die ^H4191 .

29 Yet saith ^H559 the house ^H1004 ^CMS of Israel ^H3478 , The way ^H1870 ^NMS of the Lord ^H136 ^EDS is not equal ^H8505 . O house ^H1004 ^CMS of Israel ^H3478 , are not ^H3808 ^NADV my ways ^H1870 ^NMS equal ^H8505 ? are not ^H3808 ^NADV your ways ^H1870 ^NMS unequal ^H8505 ?

30 Therefore ^H3651 ^L-ADV I will judge ^H8199 you , O house ^H1004 ^CMS of Israel ^H3478 , every one ^H376 ^NMS according to his ways ^H1870 , saith ^H5002 the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 . Repent ^H7725 , and turn ^H7725 yourselves from all ^H3605 ^M-CMS your transgressions ^H6588 ; so iniquity ^H5771 shall not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR be ^H1961 ^VQY3MS your ruin ^H4383 .

31 Cast away ^H7993 from you all ^H3605 ^NMS your transgressions ^H6588 , whereby ^H834 ^RPRO ye have transgressed ^H6586 ; and make ^H6213 you a new ^H2319 heart ^H3820 ^NMS and a new ^H2319 spirit ^H7307 ^W-GFS : for why ^H4100 ^WL-IGAT will ye die ^H4191 , O house ^H1004 ^CMS of Israel ^H3478 ^LMS ?

32 For ^H3588 ^CONJ I have no pleasure ^H2654 in the death ^H4194 of him that dieth ^H4191 , saith ^H5002 the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3069 : wherefore turn ^H7725 yourselves , and live ^H2421 ye .
