Genesis 29:10 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Then Jacob hurried on, finally arriving in the land of the east.

2 He saw a well in the distance. Three flocks of sheep and goats lay in an open field beside it, waiting to be watered. But a heavy stone covered the mouth of the well.

3 It was the custom there to wait for all the flocks to arrive before removing the stone and watering the animals. Afterward the stone would be placed back over the mouth of the well.

4 Jacob went over to the shepherds and asked, "Where are you from, my friends?" "We are from Haran," they answered.

5 "Do you know a man there named Laban, the grandson of Nahor?" he asked."Yes, we do," they replied.

6 "Is he doing well?" Jacob asked."Yes, he's well," they answered. "Look, here comes his daughter Rachel with the flock now."

7 Jacob said, "Look, it's still broad daylight-- too early to round up the animals. Why don't you water the sheep and goats so they can get back out to pasture?"

8 "We can't water the animals until all the flocks have arrived," they replied. "Then the shepherds move the stone from the mouth of the well, and we water all the sheep and goats."

9 Jacob was still talking with them when Rachel arrived with her father's flock, for she was a shepherd.

10 And because Rachel was his cousin-- the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother-- and because the sheep and goats belonged to his uncle Laban, Jacob went over to the well and moved the stone from its mouth and watered his uncle's flock.

11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and he wept aloud.

12 He explained to Rachel that he was her cousin on her father's side-- the son of her aunt Rebekah. So Rachel quickly ran and told her father, Laban.

13 As soon as Laban heard that his nephew Jacob had arrived, he ran out to meet him. He embraced and kissed him and brought him home. When Jacob had told him his story,

14 Laban exclaimed, "You really are my own flesh and blood!" After Jacob had stayed with Laban for about a month,

15 Laban said to him, "You shouldn't work for me without pay just because we are relatives. Tell me how much your wages should be."

16 Now Laban had two daughters. The older daughter was named Leah, and the younger one was Rachel.

17 There was no sparkle in Leah's eyes, but Rachel had a beautiful figure and a lovely face.

18 Since Jacob was in love with Rachel, he told her father, "I'll work for you for seven years if you'll give me Rachel, your younger daughter, as my wife."

19 "Agreed!" Laban replied. "I'd rather give her to you than to anyone else. Stay and work with me."

20 So Jacob worked seven years to pay for Rachel. But his love for her was so strong that it seemed to him but a few days.

21 Finally, the time came for him to marry her. "I have fulfilled my agreement," Jacob said to Laban. "Now give me my wife so I can marry her."

22 So Laban invited everyone in the neighborhood and prepared a wedding feast.

23 But that night, when it was dark, Laban took Leah to Jacob, and he slept with her.

24 (Laban had given Leah a servant, Zilpah, to be her maid.)

25 But when Jacob woke up in the morning-- it was Leah! "What have you done to me?" Jacob raged at Laban. "I worked seven years for Rachel! Why have you tricked me?"

26 "It's not our custom here to marry off a younger daughter ahead of the firstborn," Laban replied.

27 "But wait until the bridal week is over, then we'll give you Rachel, too-- provided you promise to work another seven years for me."

28 So Jacob agreed to work seven more years. A week after Jacob had married Leah, Laban gave him Rachel, too.

29 (Laban gave Rachel a servant, Bilhah, to be her maid.)

30 So Jacob slept with Rachel, too, and he loved her much more than Leah. He then stayed and worked for Laban the additional seven years.

31 When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, he enabled her to have children, but Rachel could not conceive.

32 So Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, "The LORD has noticed my misery, and now my husband will love me."

33 She soon became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She named him Simeon, for she said, "The LORD heard that I was unloved and has given me another son."

34 Then she became pregnant a third time and gave birth to another son. She named him Levi, for she said, "Surely this time my husband will feel affection for me, since I have given him three sons!"

35 Once again Leah became pregnant and gave birth to another son. She named him Judah, for she said, "Now I will praise the LORD!" And then she stopped having children.

3 And thither ^H8033 ^ADV-3FS were all ^H3605 ^CMS the flocks ^H5739 gathered ^H622 : and they rolled ^H1556 the stone ^H68 from ^M-PREP the well ^H875 \'s mouth ^H6310 , and watered ^H8248 the sheep ^H6629 , and put ^H7725 the stone ^H68 again upon ^H5921 ^M-PREP the well ^H875 \'s mouth ^H6310 in his place ^H4725 .

4 And Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto them , My brethren ^H251 ^NMP-1MS , whence ^H370 ^M-ADV be ye ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS ? And they said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Of Haran ^H2771 are we ^H587 ^PPRO-1MP .

5 And he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto them , Know ^H3045 ye Laban ^H3837 the son ^H1121 of Nahor ^H5152 ^EMS ? And they said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , We know ^H3045 him .

6 And he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto them , Is he well ^H7965 ? And they said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , He is well ^H7965 ^NMS : and , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , Rachel ^H7354 his daughter ^H1323 cometh ^H935 ^VQQ3FS with ^H5973 ^PREP the sheep ^H6629 .

7 And he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Lo ^H2005 ^IJEC , it is yet ^H5750 ^ADV high ^H1419 ^AMS day ^H3117 ^D-AMS , neither ^H3808 ^NADV is it time ^H6256 ^NMS that the cattle ^H4735 should be gathered together ^H622 : water ^H8248 ye the sheep ^H6629 , and go ^H1980 ^W-VQI2MP and feed ^H7462 them .

8 And they said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP , We cannot ^H3808 ^NADV , until ^H5704 ^PREP all ^H3605 ^NMS the flocks ^H5739 be gathered together ^H622 , and till they roll ^H1556 the stone ^H68 from ^M-PREP the well ^H875 \'s mouth ^H6310 ; then we water ^H8248 the sheep ^H6629 .

9 And while he yet ^H5750 spoke ^H1696 ^VPPMS with ^H5973 ^PREP-3MP them , Rachel ^H7354 came ^H935 ^VQQ3FS with ^H5973 ^PREP her father ^H1 \'s sheep ^H6629 : for ^H3588 ^CONJ she ^H1931 ^PPRO-3FS kept ^H7462 them .

10 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS , when ^H834 ^K-RPRO Jacob ^H3290 saw ^H7200 ^VQQ3MS Rachel ^H7354 the daughter ^H1323 ^CFS of Laban ^H3837 his mother ^H517 ^GFS-3MS \'s brother ^H251 ^CMS , and the sheep ^H6629 ^NMS of Laban ^H3837 his mother ^H517 ^GFS-3MS \'s brother ^H251 ^CMS , that Jacob ^H3290 went near ^H5066 , and rolled ^H1556 the stone ^H68 from ^M-PREP the well ^H875 \'s mouth ^H6310 , and watered ^H8248 the flock ^H6629 ^NMS of Laban ^H3837 his mother ^H517 ^CFS-3MS \'s brother ^H251 ^CMS .

11 And Jacob ^H3290 kissed ^H5401 Rachel ^H7354 , and lifted up ^H5375 ^W-VQY3MS his voice ^H6963 ^CMS-3MS , and wept ^H1058 .

12 And Jacob ^H3290 told ^H5046 ^W-VHY3MS Rachel ^H7354 that ^H3588 ^CONJ he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS was her father ^H1 \'s brother ^H251 ^CMS , and that ^H3588 ^CONJ he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS was Rebekah ^H7259 \'s son ^H1121 ^CMS : and she ran ^H7323 and told ^H5046 her father ^H1 .

13 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS , when Laban ^H3837 heard ^H8085 the tidings ^H8088 of Jacob ^H3290 his sister ^H269 \'s son ^H1121 , that he ran ^H7323 to meet ^H7125 ^L-VQFC-3MS him , and embraced ^H2263 him , and kissed ^H5401 him , and brought ^H935 him to ^H413 ^PREP his house ^H1004 ^NMS-3MS . And he told ^H5608 Laban ^H3837 all ^H3605 ^NMS these ^H428 things ^H1697 ^AMP .

14 And Laban ^H3837 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS to him , Surely ^H389 ^ADV thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS art my bone ^H6106 ^CFS-1MS and my flesh ^H1320 . And he abode ^H3427 ^W-VQY3MS with ^H5973 ^PREP-3MS him the space ^H3117 ^NMP of a month ^H2320 .

15 And Laban ^H3837 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto Jacob ^H3290 , Because ^H3588 thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS art my brother ^H251 , shouldest thou therefore serve ^H5647 me for naught ^H2600 ^ADV ? tell ^H5046 D-VHI2MS-3FS me , what ^H4100 ^IPRO shall thy wages ^H4909 be ?

16 And Laban ^H3837 had two ^H8147 ^ONUM daughters ^H1323 : the name ^H8034 ^CMS of the elder ^H1419 was Leah ^H3812 , and the name ^H8034 ^W-CMS of the younger ^H6996 was Rachel ^H7354 .

17 Leah ^H3812 was tender ^H7390 eyed ^H5869 ^W-CMD ; but Rachel ^H7354 was ^H1961 ^VQP3FS beautiful ^H3303 ^CFS and well ^H3303 favored ^H4758 .

18 And Jacob ^H3290 loved ^H157 Rachel ^H7354 ; and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , I will serve ^H5647 thee seven ^H7651 ^MFS years ^H8141 ^NFP for Rachel ^H7354 thy younger ^H6996 daughter ^H1323 .

19 And Laban ^H3837 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , It is better ^H2896 ^AMS that I give ^H5414 her to thee , than that I should give ^H5414 her to another ^H312 ^AMS man ^H376 : abide ^H3427 with ^H5973 me .

20 And Jacob ^H3290 served ^H5647 seven ^H7651 ^MFS years ^H8141 ^NFP for Rachel ^H7354 ; and they seemed ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MP unto him but a few ^H259 days ^H3117 , for the love ^H160 he had to her .

21 And Jacob ^H3290 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Laban ^H3837 , Give ^H3051 ^VQI2MS-3FS me my wife ^H802 ^CFS-1MS , for ^H3588 ^CONJ my days ^H3117 are fulfilled ^H4390 ^VQQ3MP , that I may go in ^H935 unto ^H413 ^PREP her .

22 And Laban ^H3837 gathered together ^H622 all ^H3605 ^NMS the men ^H376 of the place ^H4725 ^D-NMS , and made ^H6213 ^W-VQY3MS a feast ^H4960 .

23 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS in the evening ^H6153 , that he took ^H3947 ^W-VQY3MS Leah ^H3812 his daughter ^H1323 , and brought ^H935 ^W-VHY3MS her to ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him ; and he went in ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 her .

24 And Laban ^H3837 gave ^H5414 ^W-VQQ3MS unto his daughter ^H1323 Leah ^H3812 Zilpah ^H2153 his maid ^H8198 for a handmaid ^H8198 .

25 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS , that in the morning ^H1242 , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , it ^H1931 ^PPRO-3FS was Leah ^H3812 : and he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS to ^H413 ^PREP Laban ^H3837 , What ^H4100 ^IPRO is this ^H2063 ^DPRO-3FS thou hast done ^H6213 ^VQQ2MS unto me ? did not ^H3808 ^I-NADV I serve ^H5647 with ^H5973 ^PREP-2FS thee for Rachel ^H7354 ? wherefore ^H4100 ^IPRO then hast thou beguiled ^H7411 me ?

26 And Laban ^H3837 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , It must not ^H3808 ^NADV be so ^H3651 ^ADV done ^H6213 in our country ^H4725 , to give ^H5414 ^L-VQFC the younger ^H6810 before ^H6440 ^L-CMP the firstborn ^H1067 .

27 Fulfill ^H4390 her ^H2063 ^DPRO week ^H7620 , and we will give ^H5414 thee this ^H2063 ^DPRO also ^H1571 ^CONJ for the service ^H5656 which ^H834 ^RPRO thou shalt serve ^H5647 with ^H5973 me yet ^H5750 ^ADV seven ^H7651 other ^H312 years ^H8141 ^NFP .

28 And Jacob ^H3290 did ^H6213 ^W-VQY3MS so ^H3651 ^ADV , and fulfilled ^H4390 her ^H2063 ^DPRO week ^H7620 : and he gave ^H5414 ^W-VQY3MS him Rachel ^H7354 his daughter ^H1323 to wife ^H802 also .

29 And Laban ^H3837 gave ^H5414 ^W-VQQ3MS to Rachel ^H7354 his daughter ^H1323 Bilhah ^H1090 his handmaid ^H8198 to be her maid ^H8198 .

30 And he went in ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS also ^H1571 ^CONJ unto ^H413 ^PREP Rachel ^H7354 , and he loved ^H157 also ^H1571 ^CONJ Rachel ^H7354 more than Leah ^H3812 , and served ^H5647 with ^H5973 ^PREP-3MS him yet ^H5750 ^ADV seven ^H7651 other ^H312 years ^H8141 ^NFP .

31 And when the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS saw ^H7200 ^W-VIY3MS that ^H3588 ^CONJ Leah ^H3812 was hated ^H8130 , he opened ^H6605 ^W-VQY3MS her womb ^H7358 : but Rachel ^H7354 was barren ^H6135 .

32 And Leah ^H3812 conceived ^H2029 ^W-VQY3FS , and bore ^H3205 ^W-VQY3FS a son ^H1121 ^NMS , and she called ^H7121 ^W-VQY2MS his name ^H8034 ^CMS-3MS Reuben ^H7205 : for ^H3588 ^CONJ she said ^H559 , Surely ^H3588 ^CONJ the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS hath looked ^H7200 ^VQQ3MS upon my affliction ^H6040 ; now ^H6258 ^ADV therefore ^H3588 ^CONJ my husband ^H376 will love ^H157 me .

33 And she conceived ^H2029 ^W-VQY3FS again ^H5750 ^ADV , and bore ^H3205 ^W-VQY3FS a son ^H1121 ^NMS ; and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3FS , Because ^H3588 ^CONJ the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS hath heard ^H8085 that ^H3588 ^CONJ I ^H595 ^PPRO-1MS was hated ^H8130 , he hath therefore given ^H5414 ^W-VQY3MS me this ^H2088 ^DPRO son also ^H1571 ^CONJ : and she called ^H7121 ^W-VQY2MS his name ^H8034 ^CMS-3MS Simeon ^H8095 .

34 And she conceived ^H2029 ^W-VQY3FS again ^H5750 ^ADV , and bore ^H3205 ^W-VQY3FS a son ^H1121 ^NMS ; and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3FS , Now ^H6258 ^ADV this time ^H6471 ^D-GFS will my husband ^H376 be joined ^H3867 unto ^H413 ^PREP-1MS me , because ^H3588 ^CONJ I have born ^H3205 him three ^H7969 ^NFS sons ^H1121 ^NMP : therefore ^H3651 ^ADV was his name ^H8034 ^CMS-3MS called ^H7121 Levi ^H3878 .

35 And she conceived ^H2029 ^W-VQY3FS again ^H5750 ^ADV , and bore ^H3205 ^W-VQY3FS a son ^H1121 ^NMS : and she said ^H559 ^W-VQY3FS , Now ^H6471 ^D-GFS will I praise ^H3034 the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS : therefore ^H3651 ^ADV she called ^H7121 his name ^H8034 ^CMS-3MS Judah ^H3063 ; and left ^H5975 bearing ^H3205 .
