- 1 Why do the nations rage, And the peoples plot a vain thing?
- 2 The kings of the earth take a stand, And the rulers take counsel together, Against Yahweh, and against his anointed, saying,
- 3 "Let's break their bonds apart, And cast away their cords from us."
- 4 He who sits in the heavens will laugh. The Lord will have them in derision.
- 5 Then he will speak to them in his anger, And terrify them in his wrath:
- 6 "Yet I have set my king on my holy hill of Zion."

- 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
- 2 But he answered them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'
- 3 In the morning, 'It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Hypocrites! You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but you can't discern the signs of the times!
- 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there will be no sign given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah." He left them, and departed.
- 5 The disciples came to the other side and had forgotten to take bread.
- 6 Jesus said to them, "Take heed and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
- 7 They reasoned among themselves, saying, "We brought no bread."
- 8 Jesus, perceiving it, said, "Why do you reason among yourselves, you of little faith, 'because you have brought no bread?'
- 9 Don't you yet perceive, neither remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
- 10 Nor the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
- 11 How is it that you don't perceive that I didn't speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
- 12 Then they understood that he didn't tell them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
- 13 Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"
- 14 They said, "Some say John the Baptizer, some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets."
- 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
- 16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
- 17 Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
- 18 I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
- 19 I will give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; and whatever you release on earth will be released in heaven."
- 20 Then he charged the disciples that they should tell no one that he is Jesus the Christ.
- 21 From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.
- 22 Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him, saying, "Far be it from you, Lord! This will never be done to you."
- 23 But he turned, and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men."
- 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
- 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it.
- 26 For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?
- 27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds.
- 28 Most assuredly I tell you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste of death, until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
- 1 It happened, when he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching him.
- 2 Behold, a certain man who had dropsy was in front of him.
- 3 Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"
- 4 But they were silent. He took him, and healed him, and let him go.
- 5 He answered them, "Which of you, if your son or an ox fell into a well, wouldn't immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?"
- 6 They couldn't answer him regarding these things.
- 7 He spoke a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the best seats, and said to them,
- 8 "When you are invited by anyone to a marriage feast, don't sit in the best seat, since perhaps someone more honorable than you might be invited by him,
- 9 and he who invited both of you would come and tell you, 'Make room for this person.' Then you would begin, with shame, to take the lowest place.
- 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may tell you, 'Friend, move up higher.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.
- 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
- 12 He also said to the one who had invited him, "When you make a dinner or a supper, don't call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbors, or perhaps they might also return the favor, and pay you back.
- 13 But when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind;
- 14 and you will be blessed, because they don't have the resources to repay you. For you will be repaid in the resurrection of the righteous."
- 15 When one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, "Blessed is he who will feast in the Kingdom of God!"
- 16 But he said to him, "A certain man made a great supper, and he invited many people.
- 17 He sent out his servant at supper time to tell those who were invited, 'Come, for everything is ready now.'
- 18 They all as one began to make excuses. "The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please have me excused.'
- 19 "Another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I must go try them out. Please have me excused.'
- 20 "Another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I can't come.'
- 21 "That servant came, and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor, maimed, blind, and lame.'
- 22 "The servant said, 'Lord, it is done as you commanded, and there is still room.'
- 23 "The lord said to the servant, 'Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
- 24 For I tell you that none of those men who were invited will taste of my supper.'"
- 25 Now great multitudes were going with him. He turned and said to them,
- 26 "If anyone comes to me, and doesn't hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he can't be my disciple.
- 27 Whoever doesn't bear his own cross, and come after me, can't be my disciple.
- 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doesn't first sit down and count the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?
- 29 Or perhaps, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, everyone who sees begins to mock him,
- 30 saying, 'This man began to build, and wasn't able to finish.'
- 31 Or what king, as he goes to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
- 32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an envoy, and asks for conditions of peace.
- 33 So therefore whoever of you who doesn't renounce all that he has, he can't be my disciple.
- 34 Salt is good, but if the salt becomes flat and tasteless, with what do you season it?
- 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
- 1 My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.
- 2 And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.
- 3 This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commandments.
- 4 One who says, "I know him," and doesn't keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth isn't in him.
- 5 But whoever keeps his word, God's love has most assuredly been perfected in him. This is how we know that we are in him:
- 6 he who says he remains in him ought himself also to walk just like he walked.
- 7 Brothers, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning.
- 8 Again, I write a new commandment to you, which is true in him and in you; because the darkness is passing away, and the true light already shines.
- 9 He who says he is in the light and hates his brother, is in the darkness even until now.
- 10 He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him.
- 11 But he who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and doesn't know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
- 12 I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
- 13 I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, little children, because you know the Father.
- 14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God remains in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
- 15 Don't love the world, neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love isn't in him.
- 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn't the Father's, but is the world's.
- 17 The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God's will remains forever.
- 18 Little children, these are the end times, and as you heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have arisen. By this we know that it is the end times.
- 19 They went out from us, but they didn't belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have continued with us. But they left, that they might be revealed that none of them belong to us.
- 20 You have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know the truth.
- 21 I have not written to you because you don't know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
- 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the Antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
- 23 Whoever denies the Son, the same doesn't have the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also.
- 24 Therefore, as for you, let that remain in you which you heard from the beginning. If that which you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son, and in the Father.
- 25 This is the promise which he promised us, the eternal life.
- 26 These things I have written to you concerning those who would lead you astray.
- 27 As for you, the anointing which you received from him remains in you, and you don't need for anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is no lie, and even as it taught you, you will remain in him.
- 28 Now, little children, remain in him, that when he appears, we may have boldness, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
- 29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of him.
