Exodus 9:21 (ESV) English Standard Version

1 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, "Let my people go, that they may serve me.
2 For if you refuse to let them go and still hold them,
3 behold, the hand of the LORD will fall with a very severe plague upon your livestock that are in the field, the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the herds, and the flocks.
4 But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing of all that belongs to the people of Israel shall die."'"
5 And the LORD set a time, saying, "Tomorrow the LORD will do this thing in the land."
6 And the next day the LORD did this thing. All the livestock of the Egyptians died, but not one of the livestock of the people of Israel died.
7 And Pharaoh sent, and behold, not one of the livestock of Israel was dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.
8 And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Take handfuls of soot from the kiln, and let Moses throw them in the air in the sight of Pharaoh.
9 It shall become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and become boils breaking out in sores on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt."
10 So they took soot from the kiln and stood before Pharaoh. And Moses threw it in the air, and it became boils breaking out in sores on man and beast.
11 And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils came upon the magicians and upon all the Egyptians.
12 But the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had spoken to Moses.
13 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Rise up early in the morning and present yourself before Pharaoh and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, "Let my people go, that they may serve me.
14 For this time I will send all my plagues on you yourself, and on your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is none like me in all the earth.
15 For by now I could have put out my hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been cut off from the earth.
16 But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.
17 You are still exalting yourself against my people and will not let them go.
18 Behold, about this time tomorrow I will cause very heavy hail to fall, such as never has been in Egypt from the day it was founded until now.
19 Now therefore send, get your livestock and all that you have in the field into safe shelter, for every man and beast that is in the field and is not brought home will die when the hail falls on them."'"
20 Then whoever feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh hurried his slaves and his livestock into the houses,
21 but whoever did not pay attention to the word of the LORD left his slaves and his livestock in the field.
22 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward heaven, so that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt, on man and beast and every plant of the field, in the land of Egypt."
23 Then Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven, and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down to the earth. And the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt.
24 There was hail and fire flashing continually in the midst of the hail, very heavy hail, such as had never been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.
25 The hail struck down everything that was in the field in all the land of Egypt, both man and beast. And the hail struck down every plant of the field and broke every tree of the field.
26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the people of Israel were, was there no hail.
27 Then Pharaoh sent and called Moses and Aaron and said to them, "This time I have sinned; the LORD is in the right, and I and my people are in the wrong.
28 Plead with the LORD, for there has been enough of God's thunder and hail. I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer."
29 Moses said to him, "As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will stretch out my hands to the LORD. The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that the earth is the LORD's.
30 But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear the LORD God."
31 (The flax and the barley were struck down, for the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bud.
32 But the wheat and the emmer were not struck down, for they are late in coming up.)
33 So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and stretched out his hands to the LORD, and the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain no longer poured upon the earth.
34 But when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunder had ceased, he sinned yet again and hardened his heart, he and his servants.
35 So the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people of Israel go, just as the LORD had spoken through Moses.
1 Then the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Go in H935 unto H413 PREP Pharaoh H6547 EMS , and tell H1696 him , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of the Hebrews H5680 , Let my people H5971 go H7971 VPFC , that they may serve H5647 me .
2 For H3588 CONJ if H518 PART thou H859 PPRO-2MS refuse H3986 to let them go H7971 , and wilt hold H2388 VHPMS them still H5750 ,
3 Behold H2009 IJEC , the hand H3027 CFS of the LORD H3068 EDS is H1961 upon thy cattle H4735 which H834 RPRO is in the field H7704 B-NMS , upon the horses H5483 , upon the asses H2543 , upon the camels H1581 , upon the oxen H1241 , and upon the sheep H6629 : there shall be a very H3966 ADV grievous H3515 VQS3MS murrain H1698 .
4 And the LORD H3068 EDS shall sever H6395 between H996 PREP the cattle H4735 CMS of Israel H3478 and the cattle H4735 CMS of Egypt H4714 : and there shall nothing H3808 W-NPAR die H4191 VQY3MS of all H3605 M-CMS that is the children H1121 L-CMP \'s of Israel H3478 .
5 And the LORD H3068 EDS appointed H7760 W-VQY3MS a set time H4150 NMS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Tomorrow H4279 NMS the LORD H3068 EDS shall do H6213 VQY3MS this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS in the land H776 B-GFS .
6 And the LORD H3068 EDS did H6213 W-VQY3MS that H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS on the morrow H4283 , and all H3605 NMS the cattle H4735 CMS of Egypt H4714 died H4191 W-VQY3MS : but of the cattle H4735 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 died H4191 not H3808 NADV one H259 ONUM .
7 And Pharaoh H6547 EMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS , and , behold H2009 IJEC , there was not H3808 NADV one H259 MMS of the cattle H4735 of the Israelites H3478 dead H4191 . And the heart H3820 NMS of Pharaoh H6547 EMS was hardened H3513 , and he did not H3808 W-NADV let the people H5971 D-NMS go H7971 VPQ3MS .
8 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 and unto H413 PREP Aaron H175 , Take H3947 to you handfuls H4393 of ashes H6368 of the furnace H3536 , and let Moses H4872 sprinkle H2236 it toward the heaven H8064 in the sight H5869 of Pharaoh H6547 .
9 And it shall become H1961 W-VQQ3MS small dust H80 in H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the land H776 GFS of Egypt H4714 , and shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS a boil H7822 breaking forth H6524 with blains H76 upon H5921 PREP man H120 D-NMS , and upon H5921 PREP beast H929 D-NFS , throughout all H3605 NMS the land H776 GFS of Egypt H4714 .
10 And they took H3947 W-VQY3MP ashes H6368 of the furnace H3536 , and stood H5975 before H6440 L-CMP Pharaoh H6547 EMS ; and Moses H4872 sprinkled H2236 it up toward heaven H8064 ; and it became H1961 W-VQY3MS a boil H7822 breaking forth H6524 with blains H76 upon man H120 , and upon beast H929 .
11 And the magicians H2748 could H3201 not H3808 W-NPAR stand H5975 before H6440 L-CMP Moses H4872 because of L-CMP the boils H7822 ; for H3588 CONJ the boil H7822 was H1961 VQQ3MS upon the magicians H2748 , and upon all H3605 WB-CMS the Egyptians H4714 .
12 And the LORD H3068 EDS hardened H2388 the heart H3820 NMS of Pharaoh H6547 EMS , and he hearkened H8085 not H3808 W-NPAR unto H413 PREP them ; as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS had spoken H1696 VPQ3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 .
13 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Rise up early H7925 in the morning H1242 B-NMS , and stand H3320 before H6440 L-CMP Pharaoh H6547 EMS , and say H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of the Hebrews H5680 , Let my people H5971 go H7971 VPFC , that they may serve H5647 me .
14 For H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS will at this H2063 D-DFS time H6471 send H7971 all H3605 NMS my plagues H4046 upon H413 PREP thine heart H3820 CMS-2MS , and upon thy servants H5650 , and upon thy people H5971 ; that H5668 B-NMS thou mayest know H3045 that H3588 CONJ there is none H369 NPAR like me H3644 PREP-1MS in all H3605 NMS the earth H776 D-GFS .
15 For H3588 CONJ now H6258 ADV I will stretch out H7971 my hand H3027 CFS-1MS , that I may smite H5221 thee and thy people H5971 with pestilence H1698 ; and thou shalt be cut off H3582 from H4480 PREP the earth H776 D-GFS .
16 And in very deed H199 W-CONJ for H5668 B-NMS this H2063 DPRO cause have I raised thee up H5975 , for H5668 B-NMS to show H7200 in thee my power H3581 CMS-1MS ; and that H4616 my name H8034 may be declared H5608 throughout all H3605 B-CMS the earth H776 D-GFS .
17 As yet H5750 exaltest thou thyself H5549 against my people H5971 , that thou wilt not H1115 L-NPAR let them go H7971 ?
18 Behold H2009 , tomorrow H4279 NMS about this time H6256 KD-NMS I will cause it to rain H4305 VHPMS a very H3966 ADV grievous H3515 VQS3MS hail H1259 NMS , such H834 RPRO as H3644 PREP-3MS hath not H3808 NADV been H1961 VQQ3MS in Egypt H4714 since H3117 D-AMS the foundation H3245 thereof even until H5704 W-PREP now H6258 .
19 Send H7971 therefore now H6258 W-ADV , and gather H5756 thy cattle H4735 , and all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO thou hast in the field H7704 B-NMS ; for upon every H3605 NMS man H120 D-NMS and beast H929 WD-NFS which H834 RPRO shall be found H4672 in the field H7704 , and shall not H3808 W-NPAR be brought H622 home H1004 , the hail H1259 shall come down H3381 upon H5921 them , and they shall die H4191 .
20 He that feared H3372 the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS among the servants H5650 of Pharaoh H6547 EMS made his servants H5650 and his cattle H4735 CMS-3MS flee H5127 into H413 PREP the houses H1004 :
21 And he that H834 W-RPRO regarded H7760 VQQ3MS not H3808 NADV the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS left H5800 his servants H5650 and his cattle H4735 CMS-3MS in the field H7704 .
22 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Stretch forth thine hand H3027 CFS-2MS toward H5921 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD , that there may be H1961 W-VQI3MS hail H1259 in all H3605 NMS the land H776 GFS of Egypt H4714 , upon H5921 PREP man H120 D-NMS , and upon H5921 PREP beast H929 D-NFS , and upon H5921 PREP every H3605 NMS herb H6212 NMS of the field H7704 D-NMS , throughout the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 .
23 And Moses H4872 stretched forth W-VQY3MS his rod H4294 toward H5921 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD : and the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS sent H5414 VQQ3MS thunder H6963 and hail H1259 , and the fire H784 CMS ran along H1980 upon the ground H776 NFS-3FS ; and the LORD H3068 EDS rained H4305 hail H1259 NMS upon H5921 PREP the land H776 GFS of Egypt H4714 .
24 So there was H1961 W-VQY3MS hail H1259 , and fire H784 W-NMS mingled H3947 with H8432 B-NMS the hail H1259 , very H3966 ADV grievous H3515 VQS3MS , such as H834 RPRO there was H1961 VQQ3MS none H3808 ADV like it H3644 PREP-3MS in all H3605 B-CMS the land H776 GFS of Egypt H4714 EFS since H227 it became H1961 VQQ3FS a nation H1471 .
25 And the hail H1259 smote H5221 W-VHY3MS throughout all H3605 NMS the land H776 GFS of Egypt H4714 EFS all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO was in the field H7704 B-NMS , both man H120 M-NMS and beast H929 NFS ; and the hail H1259 smote H5221 every H3605 NMS herb H6212 NMS of the field H7704 D-NMS , and broke H7665 every H3605 NMS tree H6086 NMS of the field H7704 D-NMS .
26 Only H7535 ADV in the land H776 B-GFS of Goshen H1657 , where H834 RPRO the children H1121 of Israel H3478 were , was H1961 VQQ3MS there no H3808 NADV hail H1259 .
27 And Pharaoh H6547 EMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS , and called H7121 W-VQY3MS for Moses H4872 and Aaron H175 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , I have sinned H2398 VQQ1MS this time H6471 : the LORD H3068 EDS is righteous H6662 , and I H589 W-PPRO-1MS and my people H5971 are wicked H7563 .
28 Entreat H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS (for it is enough H7227 W-JMS ) that there be no H1961 more mighty H430 EDP thunderings H6963 and hail H1259 ; and I will let you go H7971 , and ye shall stay H5975 no H3808 W-NPAR longer H3254 .
29 And Moses H4872 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , As soon as I am gone out H3318 of the city H5892 D-GFS , I will spread abroad H6566 my hands H3709 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS ; and the thunder H6963 shall cease H2308 , neither H3808 NADV shall there be H1961 VQY3MS any more H5750 ADV hail H1259 ; that H4616 L-CONJ thou mayest know H3045 how that H3588 CONJ the earth H776 D-GFS is the LORD H3068 L-EDS \'s .
30 But as for thee H859 W-PPRO-2MS and thy servants H5650 , I know H3045 VQY1MS that H3588 CONJ ye will not yet H2962 ADV fear H3372 the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 NAME-4MP .
31 And the flax H6594 and the barley H8184 was smitten H5221 : for H3588 CONJ the barley H8184 was in the ear H24 , and the flax H6594 was bolled H1392 .
32 But the wheat H2406 and the rye H3698 were not H3808 NADV smitten H5221 : for H3588 CONJ they H2007 were not grown up H648 .
33 And Moses H4872 went out H3318 W-VQY3MS of the city H5892 D-GFS from M-PREP Pharaoh H6547 EMS , and spread abroad H6566 his hands H3709 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS : and the thunders H6963 and hail H1259 ceased H2308 , and the rain H4306 was not H3808 NADV poured H5413 upon the earth H776 NFS-3FS .
34 And when Pharaoh H6547 EMS saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that H3588 CONJ the rain H4306 and the hail H1259 and the thunders H6963 were ceased H2308 , he sinned H2398 L-VQFC yet more H3254 W-VHPMS , and hardened H3513 his heart H3820 CMS-3MS , he H1931 PPRO-3MS and his servants H5650 .
35 And the heart H3820 NMS of Pharaoh H6547 EMS was hardened H2388 , neither H3808 W-NPAR would he let the children H1121 of Israel H3478 go H7971 VPQ3MS ; as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS had spoken H1696 VPQ3MS by H3027 B-CFS Moses H4872 .
