James 3:15 (ESV) English Standard Version

1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.
2 For we all stumble in many ways, and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.
3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.
4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.
5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.
7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind,
8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.
10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water?
12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.
14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.
15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , how great G2245 A-ASF a matter G5208 N-ASF a little G3641 A-NSN fire G4442 N-NSN kindleth G381 V-PAI-3S !

7 For G1063 CONJ every G3956 A-NSF kind G5449 N-NSF of beasts G2342 N-GPN , and G2532 CONJ of birds G4071 N-GPN , and G5037 PRT of serpents G2062 N-GPN , and G2532 CONJ of things in the sea G1724 A-GPN , is tamed G1150 V-PPI-3S , and G2532 CONJ hath been tamed G1150 V-RPI-3S of mankind G442 A-DSF :
8 But G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-ASF tongue G1100 N-ASF can G1410 V-PNI-3S no G3762 A-NSM man G444 N-GPM tame G1150 V-AAN ; it is an unruly G183 A-NSN evil G2556 A-NSN , full G3324 A-NSF of deadly G2287 A-GSM poison G2447 N-GSM .
9 Therewith G1722 PREP bless G2127 V-PAI-1P we God G2316 N-ASM , even G2532 CONJ the Father G3962 N-ASM ; and G2532 CONJ therewith G1722 PREP curse G2672 V-PNI-1P we men G444 N-APM , which G3588 T-APM are made G1096 V-2RAP-APM after G2596 PREP the similitude G3669 N-ASF of God G2316 N-GSM .
10 Out G1537 PREP of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN same G846 P-GSN mouth G4750 N-GSN proceedeth G1831 V-PNI-3S blessing G2129 N-NSF and G2532 CONJ cursing G2671 N-NSF . My G3450 P-1GS brethren G80 N-VPM , these things G5023 D-NPN ought G5534 V-PQI-3S not G3756 PRT-N so G3779 ADV to be G1096 V-PNN .
11 Doth G3385 PRT-I a fountain G4077 N-NSF send forth G1032 V-PAI-3S at G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSF same G846 P-GSF place G3692 N-GSF sweet G1099 A-ASN water and G2532 CONJ bitter G4089 A-ASN ?
12 Can G1410 V-PNI-3S the fig tree G4808 N-NSF , my G3450 P-1GS brethren G80 N-VPM , bear G4160 V-AAN olive berries G1636 N-APF ? either G2228 PRT a vine G288 N-NSF , figs G4810 N-APN ? so G3779 ADV can no G3762 A-NSF fountain G4077 N-NSF both yield G4160 V-AAN salt G252 A-ASN water G5204 N-ASN and G2532 CONJ fresh G1099 A-ASN .
13 Who G5101 I-NSM is a wise man G4680 A-NSM and G2532 CONJ endued with knowledge G1990 A-NSM among G1722 PREP you G5213 P-2DP ? let him show G1166 V-AAM-3S out of G3588 T-GSF a good G2570 A-GSF conversation G391 N-GSF his G3588 T-APN works G2041 N-APN with G1722 PREP meekness G4240 N-DSF of wisdom G4678 N-GSF .
14 But G1161 CONJ if G1487 COND ye have G2192 V-PAI-2P bitter G4089 A-ASM envying G2205 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ strife G2052 N-ASF in G1722 PREP your G3588 T-DSF hearts G2588 N-DSF , glory G2620 V-PNM-2P not G3361 PRT-N , and G2532 CONJ lie G5574 V-PMM-2P not against G2596 PREP the G3588 T-GSF truth G225 N-GSF .
15 This G3588 T-NSF wisdom G4678 N-NSF descendeth G2718 V-PNP-NSF not G3756 PRT-N from above G509 ADV , but G235 CONJ is earthly G1919 A-NSF , sensual G5591 A-NSF , devilish G1141 A-NSF .
16 For G1063 CONJ where G3699 ADV envying G2205 N-NSM and G2532 CONJ strife G2052 N-NSF is , there G1563 ADV is confusion G181 N-NSF and G2532 CONJ every G3956 A-NSN evil G5337 A-NSN work G4229 N-NSN .
17 But G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF wisdom G4678 N-NSF that is from above G509 ADV is G2076 V-PXI-3S first G4412 ADV pure G53 A-NSF , then G1899 ADV peaceable G1516 A-NSF , gentle G1933 A-NSF , and easy to be entreated G2138 A-NSM , full G3324 A-NSF of mercy G1656 N-GSN and G2532 CONJ good G18 A-GPM fruits G2590 N-GPM , without partiality G87 A-NSF , and G2532 CONJ without hypocrisy G505 A-NSF .
18 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-GSF fruit G2590 N-NSM of righteousness G1343 N-GSF is sown G4687 V-PPI-3S in G1722 PREP peace G1515 N-DSF of G3588 T-DPM them G3588 T-DPM that make G4160 V-PAP-DPM peace G1515 N-ASF .
