Jeremiah 10:9 (ESV) English Standard Version

1 Hear the word that the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel.
2 Thus says the LORD: "Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them,
3 for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman.
4 They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move.
5 Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good."
6 There is none like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is great in might.
7 Who would not fear you, O King of the nations? For this is your due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like you.
8 They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction of idols is but wood!
9 Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz. They are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith; their clothing is violet and purple; they are all the work of skilled men.
10 But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At his wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his indignation.
11 Thus shall you say to them: "The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens."
12 It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.
13 When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.
14 Every man is stupid and without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, for his images are false, and there is no breath in them.
15 They are worthless, a work of delusion; at the time of their punishment they shall perish.
16 Not like these is he who is the portion of Jacob, for he is the one who formed all things, and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; the LORD of hosts is his name.
17 Gather up your bundle from the ground, O you who dwell under siege!
18 For thus says the LORD: "Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and I will bring distress on them, that they may feel it."
19 Woe is me because of my hurt! My wound is grievous. But I said, "Truly this is an affliction, and I must bear it."
20 My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken; my children have gone from me, and they are not; there is no one to spread my tent again and to set up my curtains.
21 For the shepherds are stupid and do not inquire of the LORD; therefore they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered.
22 A voice, a rumor! Behold, it comes!- a great commotion out of the north country to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a lair of jackals.
23 I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
24 Correct me, O LORD, but in justice; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.
25 Pour out your wrath on the nations that know you not, and on the peoples that call not on your name, for they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation.

3 For H3588 CONJ the customs H2708 CFP of the people H5971 are vain H1892 NMS : for H3588 CONJ one cutteth H3772 a tree H6086 NMS out of the forest H3293 , the work H4639 M-CMS of the hands H3027 CFD of the workman H2796 , with the axe H4621 .
4 They deck H3302 it with silver H3701 and with gold H2091 ; they fasten H2388 it with nails H4548 and with hammers H4717 , that it move H6328 not H3808 .
5 They H1992 PPRO-3MP are upright H4749 as the palm tree H8560 , but speak H1696 VPY3MP not H3808 W-NPAR : they must needs be borne H5375 , because H3588 CONJ they cannot H3808 W-NPAR go H6805 . Be not H408 NPAR afraid H3372 of H4480 them ; for H3588 CONJ they cannot H3808 W-NPAR do evil H7489 , neither H369 NPAR also H1571 W-CONJ is it in H854 them to do good H3190 .
6 Forasmuch as there is none H369 like unto thee H3644 PREP-2MS , O LORD H3068 EDS ; thou H859 PPRO-2MS art great H1419 AMS , and thy name H8034 is great H1419 AMS in might H1369 .
7 Who H4310 IPRO would not H3808 NADV fear H3372 thee , O King H4428 NMS of nations H1471 D-NMP ? for H3588 CONJ to thee doth it appertain H2969 : forasmuch H3588 CONJ as among all H3605 the wise H2450 CMP men of the nations H1471 D-NMP , and in all H3605 WB-CMS their kingdoms H4438 , there is none H369 like unto thee H3644 .
8 But they are altogether H259 brutish H1197 and foolish H3688 : the stock H6086 NMS is a doctrine H4148 CMS of vanities H1892 .
9 Silver H3701 NMS spread into plates H7554 is brought H935 from Tarshish H8659 , and gold H2091 from Uphaz H210 , the work H4639 M-CMS of the workman H2796 , and of the hands H3027 of the founder H6884 : blue H8504 and purple H713 is their clothing H3830 : they are all H3605 CMS-3MP the work H4639 M-CMS of cunning H2450 AMP men .
10 But the LORD H3068 W-EDS is the true H571 CFS God H430 EDP , he H1931 PPRO-3MS is the living H2416 NMP God H430 EDP , and an everlasting H5769 NMS king H4428 : at his wrath H7110 the earth H776 D-GFS shall tremble H7493 , and the nations H1471 NMP shall not H3808 W-NPAR be able to abide H3557 his indignation H2195 .
11 Thus H1836 shall ye say H560 unto them , The gods H426 that H1768 have not H3809 made H5648 the heavens H8065 and the earth H778 , even they shall perish H7 from the earth H4481 , and from H4481 under H8460 these H429 heavens H8065 .
12 He hath made H6213 the earth H776 GFS by his power H3581 B-CMS-3MS , he hath established H3559 the world H8398 NFS by his wisdom H2451 , and hath stretched out H5186 VQQ3MS the heavens H8064 by his discretion H8394 .

14 Every H3605 NMS man H120 NMS is brutish H1197 in his knowledge H1847 : every H3605 NMS founder H6884 is confounded H3001 by the graven image H6459 : for H3588 CONJ his molten image H5262 is falsehood H8267 NMS , and there is no H3808 W-NPAR breath H7307 NFS in them .
15 They H1992 PPRO-3MP are vanity H1892 NMS , and the work H4639 M-CMS of errors H8595 : in the time H6256 of their visitation H6486 they shall perish H6 VQY3MP .
16 The portion H2506 CMS of Jacob H3290 is not H3808 ADV like them H428 K-PPRO-3MP : for H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS is the former H3335 of all H3605 things ; and Israel H3478 is the rod H7626 CMS of his inheritance H5159 : The LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 is his name H8034 CMS-3MS .
17 Gather up H622 thy wares H3666 out of the land H776 M-NFS , O inhabitant H3427 of the fortress H4693 .
18 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Behold H2009 , I will sling out H7049 the inhabitants H3427 of the land H776 D-GFS at this H2063 D-DFS once H6471 , and will distress H6887 them , that H4616 L-CONJ they may find H4672 it so .
19 Woe H188 is me for H5921 PREP my hurt H7667 ! my wound H4347 is grievous H2470 : but I H589 W-PPRO-1MS said H559 VQQ1MS , Truly H389 ADV this H2088 DPRO is a grief H2483 , and I must bear H5375 it .
20 My tabernacle H168 CMS-1MS is spoiled H7703 , and all H3605 W-CMS my cords H4340 are broken H5423 : my children H1121 are gone forth H3318 of me , and they are not H369 : there is none H369 NPAR to stretch forth H5186 VQPMS my tent H168 CMS-1MS any more H5750 ADV , and to set up H6965 my curtains H3407 .
21 For H3588 CONJ the pastors H7462 are become brutish H1197 , and have not H3808 NADV sought H1875 the LORD H3068 EDS : therefore H3651 ADV they shall not H3808 NADV prosper H7919 , and all H3605 W-CMS their flocks H4830 shall be scattered H6327 .
22 Behold H2009 IJEC , the noise H6963 CMS of the bruit H8052 is come H935 , and a great H1419 AMS commotion H7494 out of the north country H776 M-NFS , to make H7760 L-VQFC the cities H5892 of Judah H3063 desolate H8077 , and a den H4583 of dragons H8577 .
23 O LORD H3068 EDS , I know H3045 VQY1MS that H3588 CONJ the way H1870 CMS-3MS of man H120 is not H3808 NADV in himself : it is not H3808 ADV in man H376 L-NMS that walketh H1980 to direct H3559 his steps H6806 .
24 O LORD H3068 EDS , correct H3256 me , but with H389 ADV judgment H4941 ; not H408 NPAR in thine anger H639 , lest H6435 CONJ thou bring me to nothing H4591 .
25 Pour out H8210 thy fury H2534 upon H5921 PREP the heathen H1471 D-NMP that H834 RPRO know H3045 thee not H3808 ADV , and upon H5921 PREP the families H4940 NFP that H834 RPRO call H7121 not H3808 NADV on thy name H8034 : for H3588 CONJ they have eaten up H398 Jacob H3290 , and devoured H398 him , and consumed H3615 him , and have made his habitation H5116 CMS-3MS desolate H8074 .
