Jeremiah 18:1 (ESV) English Standard Version

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
2 "Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will let you hear my words."
3 So I went down to the potter's house, and there he was working at his wheel.
4 And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter's hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do.
5 Then the word of the LORD came to me:
6 "O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the LORD. Behold, like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.
7 If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it,
8 and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it.
9 And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it,
10 and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it.
11 Now, therefore, say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: 'Thus says the LORD, behold, I am shaping disaster against you and devising a plan against you. Return, every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your deeds.'
12 "But they say, 'That is in vain! We will follow our own plans, and will every one act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.'
13 "Therefore thus says the LORD: Ask among the nations, Who has heard the like of this? The virgin Israel has done a very horrible thing.
14 Does the snow of Lebanon leave the crags of Sirion? Do the mountain waters run dry, the cold flowing streams?
15 But my people have forgotten me; they make offerings to false gods; they made them stumble in their ways, in the ancient roads, and to walk into side roads, not the highway,
16 making their land a horror, a thing to be hissed at forever. Everyone who passes by it is horrified and shakes his head.
17 Like the east wind I will scatter them before the enemy. I will show them my back, not my face, in the day of their calamity."
18 Then they said, "Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words."
19 Hear me, O LORD, and listen to the voice of my adversaries.
20 Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit for my life. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.
21 Therefore deliver up their children to famine; give them over to the power of the sword; let their wives become childless and widowed. May their men meet death by pestilence, their youths be struck down by the sword in battle.
22 May a cry be heard from their houses, when you bring the plunderer suddenly upon them! For they have dug a pit to take me and laid snares for my feet.
23 Yet you, O LORD, know all their plotting to kill me. Forgive not their iniquity, nor blot out their sin from your sight. Let them be overthrown before you; deal with them in the time of your anger.

3 Then I went down H3381 to the potter H3335 \'s house H1004 CMS , and , behold H2009 , he wrought H6213 VQPMS a work H4399 on H5921 PREP the wheels H70 .
4 And the vessel H3627 that H834 RPRO he H1931 PPRO-3MS made H6213 VQPMS of clay H2563 was marred H7843 in the hand H3027 B-CFS of the potter H3335 : so he made H6213 it again H7725 W-VQQ3MS another H312 AMS vessel H3627 CMS , as H834 RPRO seemed H5869 B-CMP good H3474 to the potter H3335 to make H6213 it .
5 Then the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 ,
6 O house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 , cannot H3808 NADV I do H6213 L-VQFC with you as this H2088 D-PMS potter H3335 ? saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS . Behold H2009 IJEC , as the clay H2563 KD-NMS is in the potter H3335 \'s hand H3027 B-CFS , so H3651 ADV are ye H859 PPRO-2MS in mine hand H3027 B-CFS-1MS , O house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 LMS .
7 At what instant H7281 NMS I shall speak H1696 VPY1MS concerning H5921 PREP a nation H1471 NMS , and concerning H5921 PREP a kingdom H4467 , to pluck up H5428 , and to pull down H5422 , and to destroy H6 it ;
8 If that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS nation H1471 , against H5921 PREP-3MS whom H834 RPRO I have pronounced H1696 VPQ1MS , turn H7725 W-VQQ3MS from their evil H7451 , I will repent H5162 of H5921 PREP-3MS the evil H7451 D-AFS that H834 RPRO I thought H2803 to do H6213 L-VQFC unto them .
9 And at what instant H7281 I shall speak H1696 VPY1MS concerning H5921 PREP a nation H1471 NMS , and concerning H5921 PREP a kingdom H4467 , to build H1129 L-VQFC and to plant H5193 it ;
10 If it do H6213 W-VQQ3MS evil H7451 in my sight H5869 , that it obey H8085 not H1115 L-NPAR my voice H6963 , then I will repent H5162 of H5921 PREP the good H2896 , wherewith H834 RPRO I said H559 VQQ1MS I would benefit H3190 them .
11 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore go H4994 IJEC to , speak H559 to H413 PREP the men H376 NMS of Judah H3063 , and to H5921 W-PREP the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; Behold H2009 IJEC , I H595 PPRO-1MS frame H3335 evil H7451 AFS against H5921 PREP-2MP you , and devise H2803 a device H4284 against H5921 PREP-2MP you : return H7725 ye now H4994 IJEC every one H376 NMS from his evil H7451 AFS way H1870 M-CMS-3MS , and make your ways H1870 and your doings H4611 good H3190 .
12 And they said H559 W-VQQ3MP , There is no hope H2976 : but H3588 CONJ we will walk H1980 after H310 PREP our own devices H4284 , and we will every one H376 W-NMS do H6213 the imagination H8307 of his evil H7451 D-AMS heart H3820 CMS-3MS .
13 Therefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; Ask H7592 ye now H4994 IJEC among the heathen H1471 , who H4310 IPRO hath heard H8085 such H428 things : the virgin H1330 of Israel H3478 LMS hath done H6213 VQQ3MS a very H3966 ADV horrible thing H8186 .
14 Will a man leave H5800 the snow H7950 NMS of Lebanon H3844 which cometh from the rock H6697 of the field H7704 ? or shall the cold H7119 flowing H5140 waters H4325 OMD that come from another place H2114 be forsaken H5428 ?
15 Because H3588 CONJ my people H5971 hath forgotten H7911 me , they have burned incense H6999 to vanity H7723 , and they have caused them to stumble H3782 in their ways H1870 NMS from the ancient H5769 NMS paths H7635 , to walk H1980 L-VQFC in paths H5410 CFP , in a way H1870 NMS not H3808 NADV cast up H5549 ;
16 To make H7760 L-VQFC their land H776 desolate H8047 , and a perpetual H5769 NMS hissing H8292 ; every one H3605 NMS that passeth H5674 thereby H5921 PREP-3FS shall be astonished H8074 , and wag H5110 his head H7218 .
17 I will scatter H6327 them as with an east H6921 NMP wind H7307 before H6440 L-CMP the enemy H341 VQPMS ; I will show H7200 them the back H6203 , and not H3808 W-NPAR the face H6440 L-CMP , in the day H3117 B-NMS of their calamity H343 CMS-3MP .
18 Then said H559 W-VQY3MP they , Come H1980 VQI2MP , and let us devise H2803 devices H4284 against H5921 PREP Jeremiah H3414 ; for H3588 CONJ the law H8451 NFS shall not H3808 NADV perish H6 from the priest H3548 , nor counsel H6098 from the wise H2450 , nor the word H1697 W-NMS from the prophet H5030 . Come H1980 VQI2MP , and let us smite H5221 him with the tongue H3956 , and let us not H408 W-NPAR give heed H7181 to H413 PREP any H3605 NMS of his words H1697 .
19 Give heed H7181 to H413 me , O LORD H3068 EDS , and hearken H8085 to the voice H6963 L-CMS of them that contend H3401 with me .
20 Shall evil H7451 AFS be recompensed H7999 for H8478 PREP good H2896 NFS ? for H3588 CONJ they have digged H3738 a pit H7745 for my soul H5315 . Remember H2142 VQI2MS that I stood H5975 VQQ1MS before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee to speak H1696 good H2896 NFS for H5921 PREP-3MP them , and to turn away H7725 L-VHFC thy wrath H2534 from H4480 them .
21 Therefore H3651 L-ADV deliver up H5414 their children H1121 to the famine H7458 , and pour out H5064 their blood by H5921 PREP the force H3027 CFD of the sword H2719 GFS ; and let their wives H802 be H1961 bereaved of their children H7909 , and be widows H490 ; and let their men H376 be H1961 put H2026 to death H4194 NMS ; let their young men H970 be slain H5221 by the sword H2719 GFS in battle H4421 .
22 Let a cry H2201 be heard H8085 from their houses H1004 , when H3588 CONJ thou shalt bring H935 VHY2MS a troop H1416 suddenly H6597 ADV upon H5921 PREP-3MP them : for H3588 CONJ they have digged H3738 a pit H7745 to take H3920 me , and hid H2934 snares H6341 for my feet H7272 .
23 Yet , LORD H3068 EDS , thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS knowest H3045 VQQ2MS all H3605 NMS their counsel H6098 against H5921 PREP me to slay H4194 LD-NMS me : forgive H3722 not H408 NPAR their iniquity H5771 , neither H408 NPAR blot out H4229 their sin H2403 from thy sight H6440 , but let them be H1961 overthrown H3782 before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee ; deal H6213 VQI2MS thus with them in the time H6256 of thine anger H639 .
