John 11 (KJV) King James Version

1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35 Jesus wept.
36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
55 And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?
57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

4 When G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM heard G191 V-AAP-NSM that , he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , This G3588 T-NSF sickness G769 N-NSF is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N unto G4314 PREP death G2288 N-ASM , but G235 CONJ for G5228 PREP the G3588 T-GSF glory G1391 N-GSF of God G2316 N-GSM , that G2443 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM might be glorified G1392 V-APS-3S thereby G1223 PREP .
5 Now G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM loved G25 V-IAI-3S Martha G3136 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ her G3588 T-ASF sister G79 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ Lazarus G2976 N-ASM .
6 When G5613 ADV he had heard G191 V-AAI-3S therefore G3767 CONJ that G3754 CONJ he was sick G770 V-PAI-3S , he abode G3306 V-AAI-3S two G1417 A-NUI days G2250 N-APF still G5119 ADV in G1722 PREP the same G3739 R-DSM place G5117 N-DSM where he was G2258 V-IXI-3S .
7 Then G1899 ADV after G3326 PREP that G5124 D-ASN saith G3004 V-PAI-3S he to his disciples G3101 N-DPM , Let us go G71 V-PAS-1P into G1519 PREP Judea G2449 N-ASF again G3825 ADV .
8 His disciples G3101 N-NPM say G3004 V-PAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , Master G4461 HEB , the G3588 T-NPM Jews G2453 A-NPM of late G3568 ADV sought G2212 V-IAI-3P to stone G3034 V-AAN thee G4571 P-2AS ; and G2532 CONJ goest G5217 V-PAI-2S thou thither G1563 ADV again G3825 ADV ?
9 Jesus G2424 N-NSM answered G611 V-ADI-3S , Are G1526 V-PXI-3P there not G3780 PRT-I twelve G1427 A-NUI hours G5610 N-NPF in the G3588 T-GSF day G2250 N-GSF ? If G1437 COND any man G5100 X-NSM walk G4043 V-PAS-3S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF day G2250 N-DSF , he stumbleth G4350 V-PAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N , because G3754 CONJ he seeth G991 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-ASN light G5457 N-ASN of G3588 T-GSM this G3588 T-GSM world G2889 N-GSM .
10 But G1161 CONJ if G1437 COND a man G5100 X-NSM walk G4043 V-PAS-3S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF night G3571 N-DSF , he stumbleth G4350 V-PAI-3S , because G3754 CONJ there is G2076 V-PXI-3S no G3756 PRT-N light G5457 N-NSN in G1722 PREP him G846 P-DSM .
11 These things G5023 D-APN said G2036 V-2AAI-3S he : and G2532 CONJ after G3326 PREP that G5124 D-ASN he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Our G3588 T-NSM friend G5384 A-NSM Lazarus G2976 N-NSM sleepeth G2837 V-RPI-3S ; but G235 CONJ I go G4198 V-PNI-1S , that G2443 CONJ I may awake him out of sleep G1852 V-AAS-1S .
12 Then G3767 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3P his G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-NPM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , if G1487 COND he sleep G2837 V-RPI-3S , he shall do well G4982 V-FPI-3S .
13 Howbeit G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM spake G2046 V-LAI-3S of G4012 PREP his G3588 T-GSM death G2288 N-GSM : but G1161 CONJ they G1565 D-NPM thought G1380 V-AAI-3P that G3754 CONJ he had spoken G3004 V-PAI-3S of G3588 T-GSF taking of G3588 T-GSM rest G2838 N-GSF in sleep G5258 N-GSM .
14 Then G5119 ADV said G2036 V-2AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM unto them G846 P-DPM plainly G3954 N-DSF , Lazarus G2976 N-NSM is dead G599 V-2AAI-3S .
15 And G2532 CONJ I am glad G5463 V-PAI-1S for your sakes G1223 PREP that G3754 CONJ I was G2252 V-IXI-1S not G3756 PRT-N there G1563 ADV , to the intent G2443 CONJ ye may believe G4100 V-AAS-2P ; nevertheless G235 CONJ let us go G71 V-PAS-1P unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM .
16 Then G3767 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S Thomas G2381 N-NSM , which is called G3004 V-PPP-NSM Didymus G1324 N-NSM , unto his fellow disciples G4827 N-DPM , Let us G2249 P-1NP also G2532 CONJ go G71 V-PAS-1P , that G2443 CONJ we may die G599 V-2AAS-1P with G3326 PREP him G846 P-GSM .
17 Then G3767 CONJ when Jesus G2424 N-NSM came G2064 V-2AAP-NSM , he found G2147 V-2AAI-3S that G846 P-ASM he had G2192 V-PAP-ASM lain in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN grave G3419 N-DSN four G5064 A-APF days G2250 N-APF already G2235 ADV .
18 Now G1161 CONJ Bethany G963 N-NSF was G2258 V-IXI-3S nigh unto G1451 ADV Jerusalem G2414 N-GPN , about G5613 ADV fifteen G1178 A-NUI furlongs G4712 N-GPN off G575 PREP :
19 And G2532 CONJ many G4183 A-NPM of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GPM Jews G2453 A-GPM came G2064 V-LAI-3P to G4314 PREP Martha G3136 N-ASF and G2532 CONJ Mary G3137 N-ASF , to G2443 CONJ comfort G3888 V-ADS-3P them G3588 T-APF concerning G4012 PREP their G3588 T-GSM brother G80 N-GSM .
20 Then G3767 CONJ Martha G3136 N-NSF , as soon as G5613 ADV she heard G191 V-AAI-3S that G3754 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM was coming G2064 V-PNI-3S , went and met G5221 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-DSM : but G1161 CONJ Mary G3137 N-NSF sat G2516 V-INI-3S still in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM house G3624 N-DSM .
21 Then G3767 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S Martha G3136 N-NSF unto G4314 PREP Jesus G2424 N-ASM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , if G1487 COND thou hadst been G2258 V-IXI-2S here G5602 ADV , my G3588 T-NSM brother G80 N-NSM had not G3756 PRT-N died G2348 V-LAI-3S .
22 But G235 CONJ I know G1492 V-RAI-1S , that G3754 CONJ even G2532 CONJ now G3568 ADV , whatsoever G3745 K-APN thou wilt ask G154 V-AMS-2S of G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-ASM , God G2316 N-NSM will give G1325 V-FAI-3S it thee G4671 P-2DS .
23 Jesus G2424 N-NSM saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto her G846 P-DSF , Thy G3588 T-NSM brother G80 N-NSM shall rise again G450 V-FMI-3S .
24 Martha G3136 N-NSF saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , I know G1492 V-RAI-1S that G3754 CONJ he shall rise again G450 V-FMI-3S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF resurrection G386 N-DSF at G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF last G2078 A-DSF day G2250 N-DSF .
25 Jesus G2424 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto her G846 P-DSF , I G1473 P-1NS am G1510 V-PXI-1S the G3588 T-NSF resurrection G386 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF life G2222 N-NSF : he that believeth G4100 V-PAP-NSM in G1519 PREP me G1691 P-1AS , though G2579 COND-C he were dead G599 V-2AAS-3S , yet shall he live G2198 V-FDI-3S :
26 And G2532 CONJ whosoever G3588 T-NSM liveth G2198 V-PAP-NSM and G2532 CONJ believeth G4100 V-PAP-NSM in G1519 PREP me G1691 P-1AS shall never G3364 die G599 V-2AAS-3S . Believest G4100 V-PAI-2S thou this G5124 D-ASN ?
27 She saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Yea G3483 PRT , Lord G2962 N-VSM : I G1473 P-1NS believe G4100 V-RAI-1S that G3754 CONJ thou G4771 P-2NS art G1488 V-PXI-2S the G3588 T-NSM Christ G5547 N-NSM , the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM , which G3588 T-NSM should come G2064 V-PNP-NSM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASM world G2889 N-ASM .
28 And G2532 CONJ when she had so G5023 D-APN said G2036 V-2AAP-NSF , she went her way G565 V-2AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ called G5455 V-AAI-3S Mary G3137 N-ASF her G3588 T-ASF sister G79 N-ASF secretly G2977 ADV , saying G2036 V-2AAP-NSF , The G3588 T-NSM Master G1320 N-NSM is come G3918 V-PXI-3S , and G2532 CONJ calleth G5455 V-PAI-3S for thee G4571 P-2AS .
29 As soon as G5613 ADV she G1565 D-NSF heard G191 V-AAI-3S that , she arose G1453 V-PPI-3S quickly G5035 ADV , and G2532 CONJ came G2064 V-PNI-3S unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM .
30 Now G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM was not yet G3768 ADV come G2064 V-LAI-3S into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF town G2968 N-ASF , but G235 CONJ was G2258 V-IXI-3S in G1722 PREP that place G5117 N-DSM where G3588 T-NSF Martha G3136 N-NSF met G5221 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-DSM .
31 The G3588 T-NPM Jews G2453 A-NPM then G3767 CONJ which were G5607 V-PXP-NPM with G3326 PREP her G846 P-GSF in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF house G3614 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ comforted G3888 V-PNP-NPM her G846 P-ASF , when they G3588 T-ASF saw G1492 V-2AAP-NPM Mary G3137 N-ASF , that G3754 CONJ she rose up G450 V-2AAI-3S hastily G5030 ADV and G2532 CONJ went out G1831 V-2AAI-3S , followed G190 V-AAI-3P her G846 P-DSF , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , She goeth G5217 V-PAI-3S unto G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN grave G3419 N-ASN to G2443 CONJ weep G2799 V-AAS-3S there G1563 ADV .
32 Then G3767 CONJ when G5613 ADV Mary G3137 N-NSF was come G2064 V-2AAI-3S where G3588 T-NSM Jesus G2424 N-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S , and saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSF him G846 P-ASM , she fell down G4098 V-2AAI-3S at G1519 PREP his G3588 T-APM feet G4228 N-APM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSF unto him G846 P-ASM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , if G1487 COND thou hadst been G2258 V-IXI-2S here G5602 ADV , my G3588 T-NSM brother G80 N-NSM had not G3756 PRT-N died G599 V-2AAI-3S .
33 When G5613 ADV Jesus G2424 N-NSM therefore G3767 CONJ saw G1492 V-2AAI-3S her G846 P-ASF weeping G2799 V-PAP-ASF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APM Jews G2453 A-APM also weeping G2799 V-PAP-APM which came with G4905 V-2AAP-APM her G846 P-DSF , he groaned G1690 V-ADI-3S in the G3588 T-DSN spirit G4151 N-DSN , and G2532 CONJ was troubled G5015 V-AAI-3S .
34 And G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Where G4226 PRT-I have ye laid G5087 V-RAI-2P him ? They G846 P-ASM said G3004 V-PAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , come G2064 V-PNI-2S and G2532 CONJ see G1492 V-AAM-2S .
35 Jesus G2424 N-NSM wept G1145 V-AAI-3S .
36 Then G3767 CONJ said G3004 V-IAI-3P the G3588 T-NPM Jews G2453 A-NPM , Behold G2396 how G4459 ADV he loved G5368 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-ASM !
37 And G1161 CONJ some G5100 X-NPM of G1537 PREP them G846 P-GPM said G2036 V-2AAI-3P , Could G1410 V-INI-3S not G3756 PRT-N this man G3778 D-NSM , which opened G455 V-AAP-NSM the G3588 T-APM eyes G3788 N-APM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM blind G5185 A-GSM , have caused G4160 V-AAN that G2443 CONJ even G2532 CONJ this man G3778 D-NSM should not G3361 PRT-N have died G599 V-2AAS-3S ?
38 Jesus G2424 N-NSM therefore G3767 CONJ again G3825 ADV groaning G1690 V-PNP-NSM in G1722 PREP himself G1438 F-3DSM cometh G2064 V-PNI-3S to G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN grave G3419 N-ASN . It G1161 CONJ was G2258 V-IXI-3S a cave G4693 N-NSN , and G2532 CONJ a stone G3037 N-NSM lay G1945 V-INI-3S upon G1909 PREP it G846 P-DSN .
39 Jesus G2424 N-NSM said G3004 V-PAI-3S , Take ye away G142 V-AAM-2P the G3588 T-ASM stone G3037 N-ASM . Martha G3136 N-NSF , the G3588 T-NSF sister G79 N-NSF of him that was dead G2348 V-RAP-GSM , saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , by this time G2235 ADV he stinketh G3605 V-PAI-3S : for G1063 CONJ he hath been G2076 V-PXI-3S dead four days G5066 A-NSM .
40 Jesus G2424 N-NSM saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto her G846 P-DSF , Said G2036 V-2AAI-1S I not G3756 PRT-N unto thee G4671 P-2DS , that G3754 CONJ , if G1437 COND thou wouldest believe G4100 V-AAS-2S , thou shouldest see G3700 V-FDI-2S the G3588 T-ASF glory G1391 N-ASF of God G2316 N-GSM ?
41 Then G3767 CONJ they took away G142 V-AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASM stone G3037 N-ASM from the place where G3757 ADV the G3588 T-NSM dead G2348 V-RAP-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S laid G2749 V-PNP-NSM . And G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM lifted G142 V-AAI-3S up G507 ADV his eyes G3788 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Father G3962 N-VSM , I thank G2168 V-PAI-1S thee G4671 P-2DS that G3754 CONJ thou hast heard G191 V-AAI-2S me G3450 P-1GS .
42 And G1161 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS knew G1492 V-LAI-1S that G3754 CONJ thou hearest G191 V-PAI-2S me G3450 P-1GS always G3842 ADV : but G235 CONJ because G1223 PREP of G3588 T-ASM the G3588 T-ASM people G3793 N-ASM which stand by G4026 V-RAP-ASM I said G2036 V-2AAI-1S it , that G2443 CONJ they may believe G4100 V-AAS-3P that G3754 CONJ thou G4771 P-2NS hast sent G649 V-AAI-2S me G3165 P-1AS .
43 And G2532 CONJ when he thus G5023 D-APN had spoken G2036 V-2AAP-NSM , he cried G2905 V-AAI-3S with a loud G3173 A-DSF voice G5456 N-DSF , Lazarus G2976 N-VSM , come G1204 V-XXM-2S forth G1854 ADV .
44 And G2532 CONJ he that was dead G2348 V-RAP-NSM came forth G1831 V-2AAI-3S , bound G1210 V-RPP-NSM hand G5495 N-APF and G2532 CONJ foot G4228 N-APM with graveclothes G2750 N-DPF : and G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-NSF face G3799 N-NSF was bound about G4019 V-LPI-3S with a napkin G4676 N-DSN . Jesus G2424 N-NSM saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Loose G3089 V-AAM-2P him G846 P-ASM , and G2532 CONJ let G863 V-2AAM-2P him go G5217 V-PAN .
45 Then G3767 CONJ many G4183 A-NPM of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GPM Jews G2453 A-GPM which came G2064 V-2AAP-NPM to G4314 PREP Mary G3137 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ had seen G2300 V-ADP-NPM the G3588 T-NSM things which G3588 T-NSM Jesus G2424 N-NSM did G4160 V-AAI-3S , believed G4100 V-AAI-3P on G1519 PREP him G846 P-ASM .
46 But G1161 CONJ some G5100 X-NPM of G1537 PREP them G846 P-GPM went their ways G565 V-2AAI-3P to G4314 PREP the G3588 T-APM Pharisees G5330 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ told G2036 V-2AAI-3P them G846 P-DPM what G3588 T-NSM things G3739 R-APN Jesus G2424 N-NSM had done G4160 V-AAI-3S .
