2 Samuel 15:1 (NET) New English Translation

1 Some time later Absalom managed to acquire a chariot and horses, as well as fifty men to serve as his royal guard.
2 Now Absalom used to get up early and stand beside the road that led to the city gate. Whenever anyone came by who had a complaint to bring to the king for arbitration, Absalom would call out to him, "What city are you from?" The person would answer, "I, your servant, am from one of the tribes of Israel."
3 Absalom would then say to him, "Look, your claims are legitimate and appropriate. But there is no representative of the king who will listen to you."
4 Absalom would then say, "If only they would make me a judge in the land! Then everyone who had a judicial complaint could come to me and I would make sure he receives a just settlement."
5 When someone approached to bow before him, Absalom would extend his hand and embrace him and kiss him.
6 Absalom acted this way toward everyone in Israel who came to the king for justice. In this way Absalom won the loyalty of the citizens of Israel.
7 After four years Absalom said to the king, "Let me go and repay my vow that I made to the LORD while I was in Hebron.
8 For I made this vow when I was living in Geshur in Aram: 'If the LORD really does allow me to return to Jerusalem, I will serve the LORD.'"
9 The king replied to him, "Go in peace." So Absalom got up and went to Hebron.
10 Then Absalom sent spies through all the tribes of Israel who said, "When you hear the sound of the horn, you may assume that Absalom rules in Hebron."
11 Now two hundred men had gone with Absalom from Jerusalem. Since they were invited, they went naively and were unaware of what Absalom was planning.
12 While he was offering sacrifices, Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's adviser, to come from his city, Giloh. The conspiracy was gaining momentum, and the people were starting to side with Absalom.
13 Then a messenger came to David and reported, "The men of Israel are loyal to Absalom!"
14 So David said to all his servants who were with him in Jerusalem, "Come on! Let's escape! Otherwise no one will be delivered from Absalom! Go immediately, or else he will quickly overtake us and bring disaster on us and kill the city's residents with the sword."
15 The king's servants replied to the king, "We will do whatever our lord the king decides."
16 So the king and all the members of his royal court set out on foot, though the king left behind ten concubines to attend to the palace.
17 The king and all the people set out on foot, pausing at a spot some distance away.
18 All his servants were leaving with him, along with all the Kerethites, all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites— some six hundred men who had come on foot from Gath. They were leaving with the king.
19 Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, "Why should you come with us? Go back and stay with the new king, for you are a foreigner and an exile from your own country.
20 It seems like you arrived just yesterday. Today should I make you wander around by going with us? I go where I must go. But as for you, go back and take your men with you. May genuine loyal love protect you!"
21 But Ittai replied to the king, "As surely as the LORD lives and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king is, whether dead or alive, there I will be as well!"
22 So David said to Ittai, "Come along then." So Ittai the Gittite went along, accompanied by all his men and all the dependents who were with him.
23 All the land was weeping loudly as all these people were leaving. As the king was crossing over the Kidron Valley, all the people were leaving on the road that leads to the desert.
24 Zadok and all the Levites who were with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. When they positioned the ark of God, Abiathar offered sacrifices until all the people had finished leaving the city.
25 Then the king said to Zadok, "Take the ark of God back to the city. If I find favor in the LORD's sight he will bring me back and enable me to see both it and his dwelling place again.
26 However, if he should say, 'I do not take pleasure in you,' then he will deal with me in a way that he considers appropriate."
27 The king said to Zadok the priest, "Are you a seer? Go back to the city in peace! Your son Ahimaaz and Abiathar's son Jonathan may go with you and Abiathar.
28 Look, I will be waiting at the fords of the desert until word from you reaches me."
29 So Zadok and Abiathar took the ark of God back to Jerusalem and remained there.
30 As David was going up the Mount of Olives, he was weeping as he went; his head was covered and his feet were bare. All the people who were with him also had their heads covered and were weeping as they went up.
31 Now David had been told, "Ahithophel has sided with the conspirators who are with Absalom. So David prayed, "Make the advice of Ahithophel foolish, O LORD!"
32 When David reached the summit, where he used to worship God, Hushai the Arkite met him with his clothes torn and dirt on his head.
33 David said to him, "If you leave with me you will be a burden to me.
34 But you will be able to counter the advice of Ahithophel if you go back to the city and say to Absalom, 'I will be your servant, O king! Previously I was your father's servant, and now I will be your servant.'
35 Zadok and Abiathar the priests will be there with you. Everything you hear in the king's palace you must tell Zadok and Abiathar the priests.
36 Furthermore, their two sons are there with them, Zadok's son Ahimaaz and Abiathar's son Jonathan. You must send them to me with any information you hear."
37 So David's friend Hushai arrived in the city, just as Absalom was entering Jerusalem.
1 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS after H310 this H3651 ADV , that Absalom H53 prepared H6213 W-VQY3MS him chariots H4818 and horses H5483 , and fifty H2572 W-MMP men H376 NMS to run H7323 before H6440 him .
2 And Absalom H53 rose up early H7925 W-VHQ3MS , and stood H5975 W-VQQ3MS beside H5921 PREP the way H1870 NMS of the gate H8179 : and it was H1961 W-VQY3MS so , that when any H3605 NMS man H376 D-NMS that H834 RPRO had H1961 VQY3MS a controversy H7379 NMS came H935 L-VQFC to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS for judgment H4941 , then Absalom H53 called H7121 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Of M-DPRO what H335 city H5892 GFS art thou H859 PPRO-2MS ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thy servant H5650 is of one H259 of the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 .
3 And Absalom H53 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , See H7200 VQI2MS , thy matters H1697 are good H2896 and right H5228 ; but there is no H369 NPAR man deputed of the king H4428 to hear H8085 thee .
4 Absalom H53 said H559 W-VQY3MS moreover , Oh that H4310 IPRO I were made H7760 judge H8199 in the land H776 B-NFS , that every H3605 NMS man H376 NMS which H834 RPRO hath H1961 VQY3MS any suit H7379 NMS or cause H4941 W-NMS might come H935 VQY3MS unto H5921 me , and I would do him justice H6663 !
5 And it was H1961 W-VQQ3MS so , that when any man H376 NMS came nigh H7126 to him to do him obeisance H7812 , he put forth his hand H3027 CFS-3MS , and took H2388 him , and kissed H5401 him .
6 And on this H2088 D-PMS manner H1697 did H6213 W-VQY3MS Absalom H53 to all H3605 L-CMS Israel H3478 that H834 RPRO came H935 VQY3MP to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS for judgment H4941 : so Absalom H53 stole H1589 the hearts H3820 NMS of the men H376 CMP of Israel H3478 LMS .
7 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS after H7093 M-CMS forty H705 MMP years H8141 NFS , that Absalom H53 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , let me go H1980 and pay H7999 W-VPY1MS my vow H5088 , which H834 RPRO I have vowed H5087 VQQ1MS unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , in Hebron H2275 .
8 For H3588 CONJ thy servant H5650 vowed H5087 a vow H5088 while I abode H3427 at Geshur H1650 in Syria H758 , saying H559 L-VQFC , If H518 PART the LORD H3068 EDS shall bring me again H7725 indeed to Jerusalem H3389 , then I will serve H5647 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
9 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 unto him , Go H1980 VQI2MS in peace H7965 . So he arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS to Hebron H2275 .
10 But Absalom H53 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS spies H7270 throughout all H3605 B-CMS the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 , saying H559 L-VQFC , As soon as ye hear H8085 the sound H6963 CMS of the trumpet H7782 , then ye shall say H559 , Absalom H53 reigneth H4427 in Hebron H2275 .
11 And with H854 W-PART Absalom H53 went H1980 VQQ3MP two hundred H3967 MFD men H376 NMS out of Jerusalem H3389 , that were called H7121 ; and they went H1980 in their simplicity H8537 , and they knew H3045 VQQ3MP not H3808 W-NPAR any H3605 NMS thing H1697 .
12 And Absalom H53 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS for Ahithophel H302 the Gilonite H1526 , David H1732 MMS \'s counselor H3289 , from his city H5892 , even from Giloh H1542 , while he offered H2076 sacrifices H2077 . And the conspiracy H7195 was H1961 W-VQY3MS strong H533 ; for the people H5971 increased H7227 continually H1980 VQPMS with H854 PREP Absalom H53 .
13 And there came H935 W-VQY3MS a messenger H5046 to H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , saying H559 L-VQFC , The hearts H3820 of the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 are H1961 VQQ3MS after H310 PREP Absalom H53 .
14 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto all H3605 L-CMS his servants H5650 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him at Jerusalem H3389 , Arise H6965 , and let us flee H1227 ; for H3588 CONJ we shall H1961 not H3808 NADV else escape H6413 from Absalom H53 : make speed H4116 to depart H1980 L-VQFC , lest H6435 CONJ he overtake H5381 us suddenly H4116 , and bring H5080 evil H7451 D-AFS upon H5921 PREP-1MP us , and smite H5221 the city H5892 D-GFS with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS .
15 And the king H4428 D-NMS \'s servants H5650 said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , Behold H2009 IJEC , thy servants H5650 are ready to do whatsoever H834 RPRO my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS shall appoint H977 .
16 And the king H4428 D-NMS went forth H3318 W-VQY3MS , and all H3605 W-CMS his household H1004 NMS-3MS after H7272 B-CFD-3MS him . And the king H4428 D-NMS left H5800 ten H6235 MFS women H802 GFP , which were concubines H6370 , to keep H8104 L-VQFC the house H1004 .
17 And the king H4428 D-NMS went forth H3318 W-VQY3MS , and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 after H7272 B-CFD-3MS him , and tarried H5975 in a place H1004 that was far off H4801 .
18 And all H3605 W-CMS his servants H5650 passed on H5674 beside H5921 PREP him ; and all H3605 W-CMS the Cherethites H3774 , and all H3605 W-CMS the Pelethites H6432 , and all H3605 the Gittites H1663 , six H8337 RFS hundred H3967 BFP men H376 NMS which H834 RPRO came H935 VQQ3MP after H7272 him from Gath H1661 , passed on H5674 before H5921 PREP the king H4428 .
19 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS the king H4428 D-NMS to H413 PREP Ittai H863 the Gittite H1663 , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO goest H1980 VQY2MS thou H859 PPRO-2MS also H1571 CONJ with H854 PREP-1MP us ? return H7725 VQFC to thy place H4725 , and abide H3427 with H5973 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS : for H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS art a stranger H5237 AMS , and also H1571 W-CONJ an exile H1540 .
20 Whereas thou camest H935 but yesterday H8543 , should I this day H3117 make thee go up H1980 L-VQFC and down H5128 with H5973 PREP-1MP us ? seeing I H589 W-PPRO-1MS go H1980 VQPMS whither H834 RPRO I H589 W-PPRO-1MS may H1980 VQPMS , return H7725 VQFC thou , and take back H7725 thy brethren H251 CMP-2MS : mercy H2617 NMS and truth H571 be with H5973 PREP-2FS thee .
21 And Ittai H863 NAME answered H6030 W-VQY3MS the king H4428 D-NMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , As the LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , and as my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS liveth H2416 , surely H518 PART in what H834 RPRO place H4725 B-CMS my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS shall be H1961 VQY3MS , whether H518 PART in death H4194 or H518 PART life H2416 , even H3588 CONJ there H8033 also will thy servant H5650 be H1961 VQY3MS .
22 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Ittai H863 , Go H1980 VQI2MS and pass over H5674 . And Ittai H863 the Gittite H1663 passed over H5674 , and all H3605 W-CMS his men H376 , and all H3605 W-CMS the little ones H2945 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him .
23 And all H3605 W-CMS the country H776 D-GFS wept H1058 with a loud H1419 AMS voice H6963 CMS , and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 passed over H5674 : the king H4428 also himself passed over H5674 the brook H5158 Kidron H6939 , and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 passed over H5674 , toward H5921 PREP the way H1870 of the wilderness H4057 D-NMS .
24 And lo H2009 IJEC Zadok H6659 also H1571 CONJ , and all H3605 NMS the Levites H3881 were with H854 PREP-3MS him , bearing H5375 the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 NFS of God H430 D-EDP : and they set down H3332 the ark H727 of God H430 D-EDP ; and Abiathar H54 went up H5927 W-VHY3MS , until H5704 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 had done H8552 passing H5674 out of H4480 PREP the city H5892 D-GFS .
25 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto Zadok H6659 , Carry back H7725 VHFA the ark H727 of God H430 D-EDP into the city H5892 D-GFS : if H518 PART I shall find H4672 VQY1MS favor H2580 NMS in the eyes H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , he will bring me again H7725 , and show H7200 me both it , and his habitation H5116 :
26 But if H518 W-PART he thus H3541 say H559 VQY3MS , I have no H3808 NADV delight H2654 VQQ1MS in thee ; behold H2009 , here am I , let him do H6213 to me as H834 K-RPRO seemeth H5869 B-CMD-3MS good H2896 AMS unto him .
27 The king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS also unto H413 PREP Zadok H6659 the priest H3548 , Art not thou H859 PPRO-2MS a seer H7200 ? return H7725 into the city H5892 D-GFS in peace H7965 , and your two H8147 ONUM sons H1121 with H854 you , Ahimaaz H290 thy son H1121 , and Jonathan H3083 the son H1121 of Abiathar H54 .
28 See H7200 , I H595 PPRO-1MS will tarry H4102 in the plain H6160 of the wilderness H4057 D-NMS , until H5704 PREP there come H935 VQFC word H1697 NMS from you to certify H5046 L-VHFC me .
29 Zadok H6659 therefore and Abiathar H54 carried H7725 W-VHY3MS the ark H727 of God H430 D-EDP again to Jerusalem H3389 : and they tarried H3427 W-VQY3MP there H8033 ADV .
30 And David H1732 went up H5927 by the ascent H4608 of mount Olivet H2132 , and wept H1058 as he went up H5927 , and had his head H7218 covered H2645 , and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS went H1980 barefoot H3182 : and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 that H834 RPRO was with H854 PREP-3MS him covered H2645 every man H376 NMS his head H7218 CMS-3MS , and they went up H5927 , weeping H1058 as they went up H5927 .
31 And one told H5046 VHQ3MS David H1732 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Ahithophel H302 is among the conspirators H7194 with H5973 PREP Absalom H53 . And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , O LORD H3068 NAME-4MS , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , turn the counsel H6098 CFS of Ahithophel H302 into foolishness H5528 .
32 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , that when David H1732 was come H935 VQPMS to H5704 PREP the top H7218 of the mount , where H834 RPRO he worshiped H7812 God H430 , behold H2009 IJEC , Hushai H2365 the Archite H757 came to meet H7125 L-VQFC-3MS him with his coat H3801 rent H7167 , and earth H127 upon H5921 PREP his head H7218 CMP-3MS :
33 Unto whom David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , If H518 PART thou passest on H5674 with H854 PREP-1MS me , then thou shalt be H1961 a burden H4853 unto H5921 PREP-1MS me :
34 But if H518 W-PART thou return H7725 VQY2MS to the city H5892 D-GFS , and say H559 unto Absalom H53 , I H589 PPRO-1MS will be H1961 VQY1MS thy servant H5650 , O king H4428 D-NMS ; as I H589 PPRO-1MS have been thy father H1 NMS \'s servant H5650 NMS hitherto H227 , so will I H589 PPRO-1MS now H6258 W-ADV also be thy servant H5650 : then mayest thou for me defeat H6565 the counsel H6098 CFS of Ahithophel H302 .
35 And hast thou not H3808 there H8033 ADV with H5973 PREP-2MS thee Zadok H6659 and Abiathar H54 the priests H3548 ? therefore it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that what H3605 NMS thing H1697 D-NMS soever H834 RPRO thou shalt hear H8085 out of the king\'s house H1004 , thou shalt tell H5046 it to Zadok H6659 and Abiathar H54 the priests H3548 .
36 Behold H2009 IJEC , they have there H8033 ADV with H5973 PREP-3MP them their two H8147 ONUM sons H1121 CMP-3MP , Ahimaaz H290 Zadok H6659 \'s son , and Jonathan H3083 Abiathar H54 \'s son ; and by H3027 them ye shall send H7971 unto H413 PREP-1MS me every H3605 NMS thing H1697 VQPMS that H834 RPRO ye can hear H8085 .
37 So Hushai H2365 David H1732 \'s friend H7463 came H935 W-VQY3MS into the city H5892 D-GFS , and Absalom H53 came H935 VQY3MS into Jerusalem H3389 .
