1. After Ahab's death, Moab rebelled against Israel.

2. Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers, saying to them, "Go and consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury."

And Ahaziah H274 fell down H5307 through H1157 a lattice H7639 in his upper chamber H5944 that H834 was in Samaria H8111 , and was sick H2470 : and he sent H7971 messengers H4397 , and said H559 unto H413 them, Go H1980 , inquire H1875 of Baal H1176 -zebub the god H430 of Ekron H6138 whether H518 I shall recover H2421 of this disease H4480 H2483 H2088 .

3. But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them,`Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?'

4. Therefore this is what the LORD says:`You will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!'" So Elijah went.

5. When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, "Why have you come back?"

6. "A man came to meet us," they replied. "And he said to us,`Go back to the king who sent you and tell him, "This is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending men to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!"'"

7. The king asked them, "What kind of man was it who came to meet you and told you this?"

7. And he said H1696 unto H413 them, What H4100 manner H4941 of man H376 was he which H834 came up H5927 to meet H7125 you , and told H1696 H413 you H853 these H428 words H1697 ?

8. They replied, "He was a man with a garment of hair and with a leather belt round his waist." The king said, "That was Elijah the Tishbite."

8. And they answered H559 H413 him, He was a hairy man H376 H1167 H8181 , and girt H247 with a girdle H232 of leather H5785 about his loins H4975 . And he said H559 , It H1931 is Elijah H452 the Tishbite H8664 .

9. Then he sent to Elijah a captain with his company of fifty men. The captain went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, "Man of God, the king says,`Come down!'"

9. Then the king sent H7971 unto H413 him a captain H8269 of fifty H2572 with his fifty H2572 . And he went up H5927 to H413 him: and, behold H2009 , he sat H3427 on H5921 the top H7218 of a hill H2022 . And he spoke H1696 unto H413 him , Thou man H376 of God H430 , the king H4428 hath said H1696 , Come down H3381 .

10. Elijah answered the captain, "If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!" Then the fire fell from heaven and consumed the captain and his men.

11. At this the king sent to Elijah another captain with his fifty men. The captain said to him, "Man of God, this is what the king says,`Come down at once!'"

11. Again H7725 also he sent H7971 unto H413 him another H312 captain H8269 of fifty H2572 with his fifty H2572 . And he answered H6030 and said H1696 unto H413 him , O man H376 of God H430 , thus H3541 hath the king H4428 said H559 , Come down H3381 quickly H4120 .

12. "If I am a man of God," Elijah replied, "may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!" Then the fire of God fell from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.

13. So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. This third captain went up and fell on his knees before Elijah. "Man of God," he begged, "please have respect for my life and the lives of these fifty men, your servants!

14. See, fire has fallen from heaven and consumed the first two captains and all their men. But now have respect for my life!"

14. Behold H2009 , there came fire down H3381 H784 from H4480 heaven H8064 , and burnt up H398 H853 the two H8147 captains H8269 of the former H7223 fifties H2572 with their fifties H2572 : therefore let my life H5315 now H6258 be precious H3365 in thy sight H5869 .

15. The angel of the LORD said to Elijah, "Go down with him; do not be afraid of him." So Elijah got up and went down with him to the king.

16. He told the king, "This is what the LORD says: Is it because there is no God in Israel for you to consult that you have sent messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Because you have done this, you will never leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!"

And he said H1696 unto H413 him, Thus H3541 saith H559 the LORD H3068 , Forasmuch as H3282 H834 thou hast sent H7971 messengers H4397 to inquire H1875 of Baal H1176 -zebub the god H430 of Ekron H6138 , is it not because H4480 H1097 there is no H369 God H430 in Israel H3478 to inquire H1875 of his word H1697 ? therefore H3651 thou shalt not H3808 come down H3381 off H4480 that bed H4296 on which H834 H8033 thou art gone up H5927 , but H3588 shalt surely die H4191 H4191 .

17. So he died, according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken. Because Ahaziah had no son, Joram succeeded him as king in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah.
