Leviticus 21 (NIV) New International Version

1 The LORD said to Moses, "Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them:`A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean for any of his people who die,
2 except for a close relative, such as his mother or father, his son or daughter, his brother,
3 or an unmarried sister who is dependent on him since she has no husband--for her he may make himself unclean.
4 He must not make himself unclean for people related to him by marriage, and so defile himself.
5 "`Priests must not shave their heads or shave off the edges of their beards or cut their bodies.
6 They must be holy to their God and must not profane the name of their God. Because they present the offerings made to the LORD by fire, the food of their God, they are to be holy.
7 "`They must not marry women defiled by prostitution or divorced from their husbands, because priests are holy to their God.
8 Regard them as holy, because they offer up the food of your God. Consider them holy, because I the LORD am holy--I who make you holy.
9 "`If a priest's daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she disgraces her father; she must be burned in the fire.
10 "`The high priest, the one among his brothers who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments, must not let his hair become unkempt or tear his clothes.
11 He must not enter a place where there is a dead body. He must not make himself unclean, even for his father or mother,
12 nor leave the sanctuary of his God or desecrate it, because he has been dedicated by the anointing oil of his God. I am the LORD.
13 "`The woman he marries must be a virgin.
14 He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or a woman defiled by prostitution, but only a virgin from his own people,
15 so that he will not defile his offspring among his people. I am the LORD, who makes him holy.'"
16 The LORD said to Moses,
17 "Say to Aaron:`For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God.
18 No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed;
19 no man with a crippled foot or hand,
20 or who is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles.
21 No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the offerings made to the LORD by fire. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God.
22 He may eat the most holy food of his God, as well as the holy food;
23 yet because of his defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar, and so desecrate my sanctuary. I am the LORD, who makes them holy.'"
24 So Moses told this to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.
1 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Speak H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the priests H3548 the sons H1121 of Aaron H175 , and say H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , There shall none H3808 ADV be defiled H2930 for the dead H5315 L-GFS among his people H5971 :
2 But H518 PART for his kin H7607 , that is near H7138 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , that is , for his mother H517 , and for his father H1 , and for his son H1121 , and for his daughter H1323 , and for his brother H251 ,
3 And for his sister H269 a virgin H1330 , that is nigh H7138 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , which H834 RPRO hath had H1961 VQQ3FS no H3808 ADV husband H376 L-NMS ; for her may he be defiled H2930 .
4 But he shall not H3808 NADV defile himself H2930 , being a chief man H1167 CMS among his people H5971 , to profane himself H2490 .
5 They shall not H3808 ADV make H7139 baldness H7144 upon their head H7218 , neither H3808 NADV shall they shave off H1548 the corner H6285 of their beard H2206 , nor H3808 NADV make H8295 any cuttings H8296 in their flesh H1320 .
6 They shall be H1961 VQY3MP holy H6918 unto their God H430 , and not H3808 W-NPAR profane H2490 the name H8034 CMS of their God H430 : for CONJ the offerings of the LORD made by fire H801 , and the bread H3899 NMS of their God H430 , they H1992 PPRO-3MP do offer H7126 : therefore they shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS holy H6944 .
7 They shall not H3808 NADV take H3947 a wife H802 NFS that is a whore H2181 , or profane H2491 ; neither H3808 NADV shall they take H3947 a woman H802 put away H1644 from her husband H376 : for H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS is holy H6918 unto his God H430 .
8 Thou shalt sanctify H6942 him therefore ; for H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS offereth H7126 the bread H3899 NMS of thy God H430 CMP-2MS : he shall be H1961 VQY3MS holy H6918 unto thee : for H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS , which sanctify H6942 you , am holy H6918 .
9 And the daughter H1323 of any H376 NMS priest H3548 , if H3588 CONJ she profane herself H2490 by playing the whore H2181 , she H1931 PPRO-3FS profaneth H2490 her father H1 : she shall be burnt H8313 with fire H784 .
10 And he that is the high H1419 D-AMS priest H3548 among his brethren H251 , upon H5921 PREP whose H834 RPRO head H7218 CMS-3MS the anointing H4888 oil H8081 NMS was poured H3332 VHY3MS , and that is consecrated H4390 to put on the garments H899 , shall not H3808 NADV uncover H6544 his head H7218 CMS-3MS , nor H3808 NADV rend H6533 his clothes H899 ;
11 Neither H3808 NADV shall he go in H935 VQY3MS to H5921 W-PREP any H3605 NMS dead H4191 body H5315 , nor H3808 NADV defile himself H2930 for his father H1 , or for his mother H517 ;
12 Neither H3808 NADV shall he go out H3318 VQY3MS of H4480 W-PREP the sanctuary H4720 , nor H3808 W-NADV profane H2490 the sanctuary H4720 of his God H430 CMP-3MS ; for H3588 CONJ the crown H5145 of the anointing H4888 oil H8081 NMS of his God H430 CMP-3MS is upon H5921 PREP-3MS him : I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
13 And he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS shall take H3947 VQY3MS a wife H802 NFS in her virginity H1331 .
14 A widow H490 NFS , or a divorced woman H1644 , or profane H2491 , or a harlot H2181 , these H428 PMP shall he not H3808 NADV take H3947 : but H518 PART he shall take H3947 a virgin H1330 of his own people H5971 to wife H802 NFS .
15 Neither H3808 W-NPAR shall he profane H2490 his seed H2233 NMS-3MS among his people H5971 : for H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS do sanctify H6942 him .
16 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , saying H559 ,
17 Speak H1696 VPFC unto H413 PREP Aaron H175 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Whosoever H376 NMS he be of thy seed H2233 in their generations H1755 that hath H1961 VQY3MS any blemish H3971 , let him not H3808 NADV approach H7126 to offer H7126 the bread H3899 NMS of his God H430 .
18 For H3588 CONJ whatsoever H3605 CMS man H376 NMS he be that H834 RPRO hath a blemish H3971 , he shall not H3808 NADV approach H7126 : a blind H5787 man H376 NMS , or H176 CONJ a lame H6455 , or H176 CONJ he that hath a flat nose H2763 , or H176 CONJ any thing superfluous H8311 ,
19 Or H176 CONJ a man H376 NMS that H834 RPRO is H1961 VQY3MS broken H7667 - footed , or H176 CONJ broken H7667 - handed ,
20 Or H176 CONJ crookbacked H1384 , or H176 CONJ a dwarf H1851 , or H176 CONJ that hath a blemish H8400 in his eye H5869 , or H176 CONJ be scurvy H1618 , or H176 CONJ scabbed H3217 , or H176 CONJ hath his stones H810 broken H4790 ;
21 No H3808 NADV man H376 NMS that H834 RPRO hath a blemish H3971 of the seed H2233 of Aaron H175 the priest H3548 shall come nigh H5066 to offer H7126 the offerings of the LORD made by fire H801 : he hath a blemish H3971 ; he shall not H3808 NADV come nigh H5066 to offer H7126 the bread H3899 NMS of his God H430 CMP-3MS .
22 He shall eat H398 VQY3MS the bread H3899 NMS of his God H430 CMP-3MS , both of the most holy H6944 , and of H4480 W-PREP the holy H6944 .
23 Only H389 ADV he shall not H3808 NADV go in H935 VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the veil H6532 , nor H3808 NADV come nigh H5066 unto H413 PREP the altar H4196 D-NMS , because H3588 CONJ he hath a blemish H3971 ; that he profane H2490 not H3808 W-NADV my sanctuaries H4720 : for H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS do sanctify H6942 them .
24 And Moses H4872 told H1696 W-VPY3MS it unto H413 PREP Aaron H175 , and to H413 W-PREP his sons H1121 CMP-3MS , and unto H413 W-PREP all H3605 NMS the children H1121 CMP-3MS of Israel H3478 LMS .
