2 Kings 11:12 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 When Athaliah, the mother of King Ahaziah of Judah, learned that her son was dead, she began to destroy the rest of the royal family.
2 But Ahaziah's sister Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram, took Ahaziah's infant son, Joash, and stole him away from among the rest of the king's children, who were about to be killed. She put Joash and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah, so the child was not murdered.
3 Joash remained hidden in the Temple of the LORD for six years while Athaliah ruled over the land.
4 In the seventh year of Athaliah's reign, Jehoiada the priest summoned the commanders, the Carite mercenaries, and the palace guards to come to the Temple of the LORD. He made a solemn pact with them and made them swear an oath of loyalty there in the LORD's Temple; then he showed them the king's son.
5 Jehoiada told them, "This is what you must do. A third of you who are on duty on the Sabbath are to guard the royal palace itself.
6 Another third of you are to stand guard at the Sur Gate. And the final third must stand guard behind the palace guard. These three groups will all guard the palace.
7 The other two units who are off duty on the Sabbath must stand guard for the king at the LORD's Temple.
8 Form a bodyguard around the king and keep your weapons in hand. Kill anyone who tries to break through. Stay with the king wherever he goes."
9 So the commanders did everything as Jehoiada the priest ordered. The commanders took charge of the men reporting for duty that Sabbath, as well as those who were going off duty. They brought them all to Jehoiada the priest,
10 and he supplied them with the spears and small shields that had once belonged to King David and were stored in the Temple of the LORD.
11 The palace guards stationed themselves around the king, with their weapons ready. They formed a line from the south side of the Temple around to the north side and all around the altar.
12 Then Jehoiada brought out Joash, the king's son, placed the crown on his head, and presented him with a copy of God's laws. They anointed him and proclaimed him king, and everyone clapped their hands and shouted, "Long live the king!"
13 When Athaliah heard all the noise made by the palace guards and the people, she hurried to the LORD's Temple to see what was happening.
14 When she arrived, she saw the newly crowned king standing in his place of authority by the pillar, as was the custom at times of coronation. The commanders and trumpeters were surrounding him, and people from all over the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. When Athaliah saw all this, she tore her clothes in despair and shouted, "Treason! Treason!"
15 Then Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders who were in charge of the troops, "Take her to the soldiers in front of the Temple, and kill anyone who tries to rescue her." For the priest had said, "She must not be killed in the Temple of the LORD."
16 So they seized her and led her out to the gate where horses enter the palace grounds, and she was killed there.
17 Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people that they would be the LORD's people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.
18 And all the people of the land went over to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They demolished the altars and smashed the idols to pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars.Jehoiada the priest stationed guards at the Temple of the LORD.
19 Then the commanders, the Carite mercenaries, the palace guards, and all the people of the land escorted the king from the Temple of the LORD. They went through the gate of the guards and into the palace, and the king took his seat on the royal throne.
20 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was peaceful because Athaliah had been killed at the king's palace.
21 Joash was seven years old when he became king.
1 And when Athaliah H6271 the mother H517 GFS of Ahaziah H274 saw H7200 that H3588 CONJ her son H1121 was dead H4191 , she arose H6965 and destroyed H6 all H3605 NMS the seed H2233 NMS royal H4467 .
2 But Jehosheba H3089 , the daughter H1323 CFS of king H4428 Joram H3141 , sister H269 of Ahaziah H274 , took H3947 W-VQY3FS Joash H3101 the son H1121 of Ahaziah H274 , and stole H1589 him from among H8432 the king H4428 D-NMS \'s sons H1121 which were slain H4191 ; and they hid H5641 him , even him and his nurse H3243 , in the bedchamber H2315 from M-CMP Athaliah H6271 , so that he was not H3808 W-NPAR slain H4191 .
3 And he was H1961 W-VQY3MS with her H854 hid H2244 in the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS six H8337 RFS years H8141 NFP . And Athaliah H6271 did reign H4427 over H5921 PREP the land H776 D-GFS .
4 And the seventh H7637 year H8141 Jehoiada H3077 sent H7971 VQQ3MS and fetched H3947 W-VQY3MS the rulers H8269 CMP over hundreds H3967 , with the captains H3746 and the guard H7323 , and brought H935 W-VHY3MS them to H413 PREP-3MS him into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and made H3772 a covenant H1285 NFS with them , and took an oath H7650 of them in the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and showed H7200 W-VIY3MS them the king H4428 \'s son H1121 .
5 And he commanded H6680 them , saying H559 L-VQFC , This H2088 DPRO is the thing H1697 D-NMS that H834 RPRO ye shall do H6213 ; A third part H7992 of H4480 M-PPRO-2MS you that enter H935 in on the sabbath H7676 shall even be keepers H8104 of the watch H4931 of the king H4428 \'s house H1004 CMS ;
6 And a third part H7992 shall be at the gate H8179 of Sur H5495 ; and a third part H7992 at the gate H8179 behind H310 ADV the guard H7323 : so shall ye keep H8104 the watch H4931 of the house H1004 D-NMS , that it be not broken down H4535 .
7 And two H8147 parts H3027 of all H3605 NMS you that go forth H3318 VQCMP on the sabbath H7676 , even they shall keep H8104 the watch H4931 of the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS about H413 PREP the king H4428 .
8 And ye shall compass H5362 the king H4428 D-NMS round about H5439 ADV , every man H376 NMS with his weapons H3627 in his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS : and he that cometh H935 within H413 PREP the ranges H7713 , let him be slain H4191 : and be H1961 ye with H854 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS as he goeth out H3318 B-VQFC-3MS and as he cometh in H935 .
9 And the captains H8269 CMP over the hundreds H3967 did H6213 W-EMS according to all H3605 K-NMS things that H834 RPRO Jehoiada H3077 the priest H3548 commanded H6680 VPQ3MS : and they took H3947 W-VQY3MP every man H376 NMS his men H376 NMS that were to come in H935 on the sabbath H7676 , with H5973 PREP them that should go out H3318 VQCMP on the sabbath H7676 , and came H935 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP Jehoiada H3077 the priest H3548 .
10 And to the captains H8269 over hundreds H3967 did the priest H3548 give H5414 W-VQQ3MS king H4428 David H1732 MMS \'s spears H2595 and shields H7982 , that H834 RPRO were in the temple H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
11 And the guard H7323 stood H5975 , every man H376 NMS with his weapons H3627 in his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS , round about H5439 the king H4428 D-NMS , from the right corner H3802 of the temple H1004 D-NMS to H5704 PREP the left H8042 corner H3802 of the temple H1004 D-NMS , along by the altar H4196 and the temple H1004 .
12 And he brought forth the king H4428 D-NMS \'s son H1121 , and put H5414 W-VQQ3MS the crown H5145 upon H5921 PREP-3MS him , and gave him the testimony H5715 ; and they made him king H4427 , and anointed H4886 him ; and they clapped H5221 W-VHY3MP their hands H3709 , and said H559 W-VQY3MP , God save H2421 the king H4428 .
13 And when Athaliah H6271 heard H8085 the noise H6963 CMS of the guard H7323 and of the people H5971 , she came H935 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP the people H5971 into the temple H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
14 And when she looked H7200 W-VQQ3FS , behold H2009 IJEC , the king H4428 D-NMS stood H5975 by H5921 PREP a pillar H5982 , as the manner H4941 was , and the princes H8269 and the trumpeters H2689 by H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 NMS of the land H776 D-GFS rejoiced H8056 , and blew H8628 with trumpets H2689 : and Athaliah H6271 rent H7167 her clothes H899 , and cried H7121 W-VQY2MS , Treason H7195 , Treason H7195 .
15 But Jehoiada H3077 the priest H3548 commanded H6680 W-VPY3MS the captains H8269 CMP of the hundreds H3967 , the officers H6485 of the host H2428 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , Have her forth without H413 PREP the ranges H7713 : and him that followeth H935 her kill H4191 with the sword H2719 . For H3588 CONJ the priest H3548 had said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let her not H408 NPAR be slain H4191 in the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
16 And they laid H7760 hands H3027 NFD on her ; and she went H935 W-VQY3FS by the way H1870 by the which the horses H5483 came H3996 into the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 CMS : and there H8033 ADV was she slain H4191 .
17 And Jehoiada H3077 made H3772 a covenant H1285 D-NFS between H996 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS and the king H4428 D-NMS and the people H5971 , that they should be H1961 the LORD H3068 L-EDS \'s people H5971 ; between H996 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS also and the people H5971 D-NMS .
18 And all H3605 CMS the people H5971 NMS of the land H776 D-GFS went H935 W-VQY3MP into the house H1004 CMS of Baal H1168 , and broke it down H5422 ; his altars H4196 and his images H6754 broke they in pieces H7665 thoroughly H3190 VHFA , and slew H2026 Mattan H4977 the priest H3548 of Baal H1168 before H6440 L-CMP the altars H4196 . And the priest H3548 appointed H7760 W-VQY3MS officers H6486 over H5921 PREP the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
19 And he took H3947 W-VQY3MS the rulers H8269 CMP over hundreds H3967 , and the captains H3746 , and the guard H7323 , and all H3605 NMS the people H5971 NMS of the land H776 D-GFS ; and they brought down H3381 the king H4428 D-NMS from the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 EDS , and came H935 by the way H1870 of the gate H8179 NMS of the guard H7323 to the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 CMS . And he sat H3427 W-VQY3MS on H5921 PREP the throne H3678 of the kings H4428 .
20 And all H3605 NMS the people H5971 NMS of the land H776 D-GFS rejoiced H8055 W-VQY3MS , and the city H5892 was in quiet H8252 : and they slew H4191 Athaliah H6271 with the sword H2719 beside the king H4428 \'s house H1004 CMS .
21 Seven H7651 MFS years H8141 NFP old H1121 was Jehoash H3060 when he began to reign H4427 .
