Exodus 14:20 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Then the LORD gave these instructions to Moses:
2 "Order the Israelites to turn back and camp by Pi-hahiroth between Migdol and the sea. Camp there along the shore, across from Baal-zephon.
3 Then Pharaoh will think, 'The Israelites are confused. They are trapped in the wilderness!'
4 And once again I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will chase after you. I have planned this in order to display my glory through Pharaoh and his whole army. After this the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD!" So the Israelites camped there as they were told.
5 When word reached the king of Egypt that the Israelites had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds. "What have we done, letting all those Israelite slaves get away?" they asked.
6 So Pharaoh harnessed his chariot and called up his troops.
7 He took with him 600 of Egypt's best chariots, along with the rest of the chariots of Egypt, each with its commander.
8 The LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, so he chased after the people of Israel, who had left with fists raised in defiance.
9 The Egyptians chased after them with all the forces in Pharaoh's army-- all his horses and chariots, his charioteers, and his troops. The Egyptians caught up with the people of Israel as they were camped beside the shore near Pi-hahiroth, across from Baal-zephon.
10 As Pharaoh approached, the people of Israel looked up and panicked when they saw the Egyptians overtaking them. They cried out to the LORD,
11 and they said to Moses, "Why did you bring us out here to die in the wilderness? Weren't there enough graves for us in Egypt? What have you done to us? Why did you make us leave Egypt?
12 Didn't we tell you this would happen while we were still in Egypt? We said, 'Leave us alone! Let us be slaves to the Egyptians. It's better to be a slave in Egypt than a corpse in the wilderness!'"
13 But Moses told the people, "Don't be afraid. Just stand still and watch the LORD rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again.
14 The LORD himself will fight for you. Just stay calm."
15 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving!
16 Pick up your staff and raise your hand over the sea. Divide the water so the Israelites can walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground.
17 And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will charge in after the Israelites. My great glory will be displayed through Pharaoh and his troops, his chariots, and his charioteers.
18 When my glory is displayed through them, all Egypt will see my glory and know that I am the LORD!"
19 Then the angel of God, who had been leading the people of Israel, moved to the rear of the camp. The pillar of cloud also moved from the front and stood behind them.
20 The cloud settled between the Egyptian and Israelite camps. As darkness fell, the cloud turned to fire, lighting up the night. But the Egyptians and Israelites did not approach each other all night.
21 Then Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the LORD opened up a path through the water with a strong east wind. The wind blew all that night, turning the seabed into dry land.
22 So the people of Israel walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on each side!
23 Then the Egyptians-- all of Pharaoh's horses, chariots, and charioteers-- chased them into the middle of the sea.
24 But just before dawn the LORD looked down on the Egyptian army from the pillar of fire and cloud, and he threw their forces into total confusion.
25 He twisted their chariot wheels, making their chariots difficult to drive. "Let's get out of here-- away from these Israelites!" the Egyptians shouted. "The LORD is fighting for them against Egypt!"
26 When all the Israelites had reached the other side, the LORD said to Moses, "Raise your hand over the sea again. Then the waters will rush back and cover the Egyptians and their chariots and charioteers."
27 So as the sun began to rise, Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the water rushed back into its usual place. The Egyptians tried to escape, but the LORD swept them into the sea.
28 Then the waters returned and covered all the chariots and charioteers-- the entire army of Pharaoh. Of all the Egyptians who had chased the Israelites into the sea, not a single one survived.
29 But the people of Israel had walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, as the water stood up like a wall on both sides.
30 That is how the LORD rescued Israel from the hand of the Egyptians that day. And the Israelites saw the bodies of the Egyptians washed up on the seashore.
31 When the people of Israel saw the mighty power that the LORD had unleashed against the Egyptians, they were filled with awe before him. They put their faith in the LORD and in his servant Moses.

2 Speak H1696 VPFC unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , that they turn H7725 W-VUY3MP and encamp H2583 before H6440 L-CMP Pi H6367 - hahiroth , between H996 PREP Migdol H4024 and the sea H3220 D-NMS , over against H6440 L-CMP Baal H1189 - zephon : before H5226 it shall ye encamp H2583 by H5921 PREP the sea H3220 D-NMS .
3 For Pharaoh H6547 EMS will say H559 of the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 , They H1992 PPRO-3MP are entangled H943 in the land H776 B-NFS , the wilderness H4057 D-NMS hath shut them in VQQ3MS .
4 And I will harden H2388 Pharaoh H6547 EMS \'s heart H3820 NMS , that he shall follow H7291 after H310 them ; and I will be honored H3513 upon Pharaoh H6547 , and upon all H3605 WB-CMS his host H2428 ; that the Egyptians H4714 may know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 EDS . And they did H6213 so H3651 ADV .
5 And it was told H5046 the king H4428 L-CMS of Egypt H4714 EFS that H3588 CONJ the people H5971 fled H1272 : and the heart H3824 of Pharaoh H6547 EMS and of his servants H5650 W-CMS-3MS was turned H2015 against H413 PREP the people H5971 , and they said H559 , Why H4100 IPRO have we done H6213 this H2063 DPRO-3FS , that H3588 CONJ we have let Israel H3478 go H7971 from serving H5647 us ?
6 And he made ready H631 W-VQY3MS his chariot H7393 , and took H3947 VQQ3MS his people H5971 with H5973 PREP-3MS him :
7 And he took H3947 W-VQY3MS six H8337 RFS hundred H3967 BFP chosen H977 chariots H7393 , and all H3605 W-CMS the chariots H7393 of Egypt H4714 , and captains H7991 over H5921 PREP every one H3605 of them .
8 And the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS hardened H2388 the heart H3820 NMS of Pharaoh H6547 EMS king H4428 NMS of Egypt H4714 EFS , and he pursued H7291 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP the children H1121 W-CMP of Israel H3478 : and the children H1121 W-CMP of Israel H3478 went out H3318 with a high H7311 hand H3027 .
9 But the Egyptians H4714 pursued H7291 after H310 them , all H3605 NMS the horses H5483 and chariots H7393 of Pharaoh H6547 EMS , and his horsemen H6571 , and his army H2428 , and overtook H5381 them encamping H2583 by H5921 PREP the sea H3220 D-NMS , beside H5921 PREP Pi H6367 - hahiroth , before H6440 L-CMP Baal H1189 - zephon .
10 And when Pharaoh H6547 drew nigh H7126 VHQ3MS , the children H1121 of Israel H3478 lifted up H5375 W-VQY3MP their eyes H5869 CMD-3MP , and , behold H2009 IJEC , the Egyptians H4714 marched H5265 after H310 them ; and they were sore H3966 ADV afraid H3372 W-VQY3MP : and the children H1121 of Israel H3478 cried out H6817 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
11 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Because H1097 there were no H369 NPAR graves H6913 NMP in Egypt H4714 , hast thou taken us away H3947 to die H4191 L-VQFC in the wilderness H4057 ? wherefore H4100 IPRO hast thou dealt H6213 VQQ2MS thus H2063 DPRO-3FS with us , to carry us forth H3318 out of Egypt H4714 ?
12 Is not H3808 I-NADV this H2088 DPRO the word H1697 D-NMS that H834 RPRO we did tell H1696 thee in Egypt H4714 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Let us alone H2308 VQI2MS , that we may serve H5647 the Egyptians H4714 ? For H3588 CONJ it had been better H2896 AMS for us to serve H5647 the Egyptians H4714 , than that we should die H4191 in the wilderness H4057 .
13 And Moses H4872 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the people H5971 , Fear H3372 ye not H408 NPAR , stand still H3320 , and see H7200 the salvation H3444 of the LORD H3068 EDS , which H834 RPRO he will show H6213 VQY3MS to you today H3117 D-AMS : for CONJ the Egyptians H4714 whom H834 RPRO ye have seen H7200 today H3117 D-AMS , ye shall see H7200 them again H5750 ADV no H3808 NADV more H3254 forever H5921 .
14 The LORD H3068 EDS shall fight H3898 for you , and ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP shall hold your peace H2790 .
15 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Wherefore H4100 IPRO criest H6817 thou unto H413 PREP me ? speak H1696 VPFC unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , that they go forward H5265 :
16 But lift thou up H7311 thy rod H4294 , and stretch out H5186 thine hand H3027 CFS-2MS over H5921 PREP the sea H3220 D-NMS , and divide H1234 it : and the children H1121 of Israel H3478 shall go H935 on dry H3004 ground through the midst H8432 B-NMS of the sea H3220 D-NMS .
17 And I H589 W-PPRO-1MS , behold H2009 , I will harden H2388 the hearts H3820 NMS of the Egyptians H4714 , and they shall follow H935 them : and I will get me honor H3513 upon Pharaoh H6547 , and upon all H3605 WB-CMS his host H2428 , upon his chariots H7393 , and upon his horsemen H6571 .
18 And the Egyptians H4714 shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 EDS , when I have gotten me honor H3513 upon Pharaoh H6547 , upon his chariots H7393 , and upon his horsemen H6571 .
19 And the angel H4397 of God H430 D-EDP , which went H1980 D-VQPMS before H6440 L-CMP the camp H4264 of Israel H3478 , removed H5265 W-VQY3MS and went H1980 W-VQY3MS behind H310 them ; and the pillar H5982 of the cloud H6051 went H5265 W-VQY3MS from before their face H6440 L-CMP , and stood H5975 behind H310 them :
20 And it came H935 W-VQY3MS between H996 PREP the camp H4264 of the Egyptians H4714 EFS and the camp H4264 of Israel H3478 ; and it was H1961 W-VQY3MS a cloud H6051 and darkness H2822 to them , but it gave light H215 by night H3915 AMS to these : so that the one H2088 DPRO came not near H7126 the other H2088 DPRO all H3605 NMS the night H3915 .
21 And Moses H4872 stretched out H5186 W-VQY3MS his hand H3027 CFS-3MS over H5921 PREP the sea H3220 D-NMS ; and the LORD H3068 EDS caused the sea H3220 D-NMS to go H1980 back by a strong H5794 east H6921 NMP wind H7307 B-CMS all H3605 NMS that night H3915 D-AMS , and made H7760 W-VQY3MS the sea H3220 D-NMS dry H2724 land , and the waters H4325 D-OMD were divided H1234 .
22 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 went H935 W-VQY3MP into the midst H8432 B-NMS of the sea H3220 D-NMS upon the dry H3004 ground : and the waters H4325 WD-NMD were a wall H2346 unto them on their right hand H3225 , and on their left H8040 .
23 And the Egyptians H4714 pursued H7291 , and went in H935 W-VQY3MP after H310 them to H413 PREP the midst H8432 of the sea H3220 D-NMS , even all H3605 NMS Pharaoh H6547 EMS \'s horses H5483 , his chariots H7393 , and his horsemen H6571 .
24 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS , that in the morning H1242 watch H821 the LORD H3068 EDS looked H8259 unto H413 PREP the host H4264 of the Egyptians H4714 through the pillar H5982 of fire H784 CMS and of the cloud H6051 , and troubled H2000 the host H4264 of the Egyptians H4714 ,
25 And took off H5493 W-VHY3MS their chariot H4818 wheels H212 , that they drove H5090 them heavily H3517 : so that the Egyptians H4714 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let us flee H5127 from the face H6440 M-CMP of Israel H3478 ; for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS fighteth H3898 for them against the Egyptians H4714 .
26 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Stretch out H5186 thine hand H3027 CFS-2MS over H5921 PREP the sea H3220 D-NMS , that the waters H4325 D-CMS may come again H7725 W-VUY3MP upon H5921 PREP the Egyptians H4714 , upon H5921 PREP their chariots H7393 , and upon H5921 PREP their horsemen H6571 .
27 And Moses H4872 stretched forth W-VQY3MS his hand H3027 CFS-3MS over H5921 PREP the sea H3220 D-NMS , and the sea H3220 D-NMS returned H7725 to his strength H386 when the morning H1242 NMS appeared H6437 ; and the Egyptians H4714 fled H5127 against H7125 L-VQFC-3MS it ; and the LORD H3068 EDS overthrew H5287 the Egyptians H4714 in the midst H8432 B-NMS of the sea H3220 D-NMS .
28 And the waters H4325 D-CMS returned H7725 W-VUY3MP , and covered H3680 W-VQY3MP the chariots H7393 , and the horsemen H6571 , and all H3605 the host H2428 of Pharaoh H6547 EMS that came H935 into the sea H3220 BD-NMS after H310 them ; there remained H7604 VNQ3MS not H3808 ADV so much as H5704 PREP one H259 ONUM of them .
29 But the children H1121 W-CMP of Israel H3478 walked H1980 VQQ3MP upon dry H3004 land in the midst H8432 B-NMS of the sea H3220 D-NMS ; and the waters H4325 WD-NMD were a wall H2346 unto them on their right hand H3225 , and on their left H8040 .
30 Thus the LORD H3068 EDS saved H3467 Israel H3478 that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of the Egyptians H4714 ; and Israel H3478 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS the Egyptians H4714 dead H4191 upon H5921 PREP the sea H3220 D-NMS shore H8193 CFS .
31 And Israel H3478 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that great H1419 work H3027 which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS did H6213 VQQ3MS upon the Egyptians H4714 : and the people H5971 feared H3372 W-VQY3MP the LORD H3068 EDS , and believed H539 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS , and his servant H5650 Moses H4872 .
