Isaiah 36:4 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah's reign, King Sennacherib of Assyria came to attack the fortified towns of Judah and conquered them.
2 Then the king of Assyria sent his chief of staff from Lachish with a huge army to confront King Hezekiah in Jerusalem. The Assyrians took up a position beside the aqueduct that feeds water into the upper pool, near the road leading to the field where cloth is washed.
3 These are the officials who went out to meet with them: Eliakim son of Hilkiah, the palace administrator; Shebna the court secretary; and Joah son of Asaph, the royal historian.
4 Then the Assyrian king's chief of staff told them to give this message to Hezekiah: "This is what the great king of Assyria says: What are you trusting in that makes you so confident?
5 Do you think that mere words can substitute for military skill and strength? Who are you counting on, that you have rebelled against me?
6 On Egypt? If you lean on Egypt, it will be like a reed that splinters beneath your weight and pierces your hand. Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, is completely unreliable!
7 "But perhaps you will say to me, 'We are trusting in the LORD our God!' But isn't he the one who was insulted by Hezekiah? Didn't Hezekiah tear down his shrines and altars and make everyone in Judah and Jerusalem worship only at the altar here in Jerusalem?
8 "I'll tell you what! Strike a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you 2,000 horses if you can find that many men to ride on them!
9 With your tiny army, how can you think of challenging even the weakest contingent of my master's troops, even with the help of Egypt's chariots and charioteers?
10 What's more, do you think we have invaded your land without the LORD's direction? The LORD himself told us, 'Attack this land and destroy it!'"
11 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Assyrian chief of staff, "Please speak to us in Aramaic, for we understand it well. Don't speak in Hebrew, for the people on the wall will hear."
12 But Sennacherib's chief of staff replied, "Do you think my master sent this message only to you and your master? He wants all the people to hear it, for when we put this city under siege, they will suffer along with you. They will be so hungry and thirsty that they will eat their own dung and drink their own urine."
13 Then the chief of staff stood and shouted in Hebrew to the people on the wall, "Listen to this message from the great king of Assyria!
14 This is what the king says: Don't let Hezekiah deceive you. He will never be able to rescue you.
15 Don't let him fool you into trusting in the LORD by saying, 'The LORD will surely rescue us. This city will never fall into the hands of the Assyrian king!'
16 "Don't listen to Hezekiah! These are the terms the king of Assyria is offering: Make peace with me-- open the gates and come out. Then each of you can continue eating from your own grapevine and fig tree and drinking from your own well.
17 Then I will arrange to take you to another land like this one-- a land of grain and new wine, bread and vineyards.
18 "Don't let Hezekiah mislead you by saying, 'The LORD will rescue us!' Have the gods of any other nations ever saved their people from the king of Assyria?
19 What happened to the gods of Hamath and Arpad? And what about the gods of Sepharvaim? Did any god rescue Samaria from my power?
20 What god of any nation has ever been able to save its people from my power? So what makes you think that the LORD can rescue Jerusalem from me?"
21 But the people were silent and did not utter a word because Hezekiah had commanded them, "Do not answer him."
22 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, the palace administrator; Shebna the court secretary; and Joah son of Asaph, the royal historian, went back to Hezekiah. They tore their clothes in despair, and they went in to see the king and told him what the Assyrian chief of staff had said.

2 And the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS Rab H7262 - shakeh from Lachish H3923 to Jerusalem H3389 unto H413 PREP king H4428 NMS Hezekiah H2396 with a great H3515 VQS3MS army H2428 . And he stood H5975 by the conduit H8585 of the upper H5945 pool H1295 in the highway H4546 of the fuller H3526 \'s field H7704 CMS .
3 Then came forth H3318 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him Eliakim H471 , Hilkiah H2518 \'s son H1121 , which H834 RPRO was over H5921 PREP the house H1004 , and Shebna H7644 the scribe H5608 , and Joah H3098 , Asaph H623 \'s son H1121 , the recorder H2142 .
4 And Rab H7262 - shakeh said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , Say H559 W-VQY3MS ye now H4994 IJEC to H413 PREP Hezekiah H2396 , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the great H1419 D-AMS king H4428 NMS , the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS , What H4100 IGAT confidence H986 is this H2088 D-PMS wherein H834 RPRO thou trustest H982 ?
5 I say H559 VQQ1MS , sayest H389 ADV thou H389 ADV , ( ADV but H389 ADV they are but vain H8193 NFD words H1697 CMS ) I have counsel H6098 NFS and strength H1369 W-NFS for war H4421 : now H6258 ADV on H5921 PREP whom H4310 IPRO dost thou trust H982 , that H3588 CONJ thou rebellest H4775 against me ?
6 Lo H2009 IJEC , thou trustest H982 in H5921 PREP the staff H4938 of this H2088 D-PMS broken H7533 reed H7070 , on H5921 PREP Egypt H4714 EFS ; whereon H834 RPRO if a man H376 NMS lean H5564 , it will go H935 into his hand H3709 , and pierce H5344 it : so H3651 ADV is Pharaoh H6547 EMS king H4428 NMS of Egypt H4714 EFS to all H3605 that trust H982 in H5921 PREP him .
7 But H3588 W-CONJ if thou say H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP me , We trust H982 in H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 : is it not H3808 D-NPAR he H1931 PPRO-3MS , whose H834 RPRO high places H1116 and whose altars H4196 Hezekiah H2396 hath taken away H5493 VHQ3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS to Judah H3063 and to Jerusalem H3389 , Ye shall worship H7812 before H6440 L-CMP this H2088 D-PMS altar H4196 D-NMS ?
8 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore give pledges H6149 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , to H854 PREP my master H113 the king H4428 D-NMS of Assyria H804 GFS , and I will give H5414 thee two thousand H505 horses H5483 , if H518 PART thou be able H3201 VQI2MS on thy part to set H5414 riders H7392 upon H5921 PREP-3MP them .
9 How H349 W-IJEC then wilt thou turn away H7725 the face H6440 CMP of one H259 captain H6346 of the least H6996 of my master H113 \'s servants H5650 , and put thy trust H982 on H5921 PREP Egypt H4714 EFS for chariots H7393 and for horsemen H6571 ?
10 And am I now H6258 W-ADV come up H5927 without H1107 the LORD H3068 EDS against H5921 PREP this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS to destroy H7843 it ? the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP me , Go up H5927 against H413 PREP this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS , and destroy H7843 it .
11 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Eliakim H471 and Shebna H7644 and Joah H3098 unto H413 PREP Rab H7262 - shakeh , Speak H1696 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , unto H413 PREP thy servants H5650 in the Syrian language H762 ; for H3588 CONJ we H587 understand H8085 it : and speak H1696 not H408 W-NPAR to H413 PREP us in the Jews\' language H3066 , in the ears H241 of the people H5971 that H834 RPRO are on H5921 PREP the wall H2346 .
12 But Rab H7262 - shakeh said H559 W-VQY3MS , Hath my master H113 sent H7971 me to H413 thy master H113 and to H413 W-PREP-2MS thee to speak H1696 these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP ? hath he not H3808 I-NADV sent me to H5921 PREP the men H376 D-NMP that sit H3427 upon H5921 PREP the wall H2346 , that they may eat H398 L-VQFC their own dung H6675 , and drink H8354 WL-VQFC their own piss H4325 with H5973 you ?
13 Then Rab H7262 - shakeh stood H5975 , and cried H7121 W-VQY3MS with a loud H1419 AMS voice H6963 in the Jews\' language H3066 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Hear H8085 VQI2MP ye the words H1697 CMP of the great H1419 AMS king H4428 NMS , the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 .
14 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the king H4428 D-NMS , Let not H408 NPAR Hezekiah H2396 deceive H5377 you : for H3588 CONJ he shall not H3808 ADV be able H3201 VQY3MS to deliver H5337 L-VHFC you .
15 Neither H408 W-NPAR let Hezekiah H2396 make you trust H982 in H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 L-VQFC , The LORD H3068 EDS will surely deliver H5337 us : this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS shall not H3808 NADV be delivered H5414 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 .
16 Hearken H8085 not H408 ADV to H413 PREP Hezekiah H2396 : for H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the king H4428 D-NMS of Assyria H804 GFS , Make H6213 an agreement with H854 PREP-1MS me by a present H1293 , and come out H3318 to H413 PREP me : and eat H398 ye every one H376 NMS of his vine H1612 , and every one H376 NMS of his fig tree H8384 , and drink H8354 W-VQI2MP ye every one H376 NMS the waters H4325 of his own cistern H953 ;
17 Until H5704 PREP I come H935 and take you away H3947 to H413 PREP a land H776 GFS like your own land H776 , a land H776 GFS of corn H1715 and wine H8492 , a land H776 GFS of bread H3899 NMS and vineyards H3754 .
18 Beware lest H6435 CONJ Hezekiah H2396 persuade H5496 you , saying H559 L-VQFC , The LORD H3068 EDS will deliver H5337 us . Hath any H376 NMS of the gods H430 CDP of the nations H1471 D-NMP delivered H5337 his land H776 out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 ?
19 Where H346 IGAT are the gods H430 CDP of Hamath H2574 and Arphad H774 ? where H346 IGAT are the gods H430 CDP of Sepharvaim H5617 ? and H3588 have they delivered H5337 Samaria H8111 out of my hand H3027 ?
20 Who H4310 IPRO are they among all H3605 B-CMS the gods H430 CDP of these H428 D-DPRO-3MP lands H776 , that H834 RPRO have delivered H5337 their land H776 out of my hand H3027 , that H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS should deliver H5337 Jerusalem H3389 out of my hand H3027 ?
21 But they held their peace H2790 , and answered H6030 VQQ3MP him not H3808 ADV a word H1697 VQPMS : for H3588 CONJ the king H4428 D-NMS \'s commandment H4687 CFS was , saying H559 L-VQFC , Answer H6030 him not H3808 NADV .
22 Then came H935 W-VQY3MS Eliakim H471 , the son H1121 of Hilkiah H2518 , that H834 RPRO was over H5921 PREP the household H1004 D-NMS , and Shebna H7644 the scribe H5608 , and Joah H3098 , the son H1121 of Asaph H623 , the recorder H2142 , to H413 PREP Hezekiah H2396 with their clothes H899 rent H7167 , and told H5046 him the words H1697 CMP of Rab H7262 - shakeh .
