Joel 2:32 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 Sound the alarm in Jerusalem! Raise the battle cry on my holy mountain! Let everyone tremble in fear because the day of the LORD is upon us.
2 It is a day of darkness and gloom, a day of thick clouds and deep blackness. Suddenly, like dawn spreading across the mountains, a great and mighty army appears. Nothing like it has been seen before or will ever be seen again.
3 Fire burns in front of them, and flames follow after them. Ahead of them the land lies as beautiful as the Garden of Eden. Behind them is nothing but desolation; not one thing escapes.
4 They look like horses; they charge forward like war horses.
5 Look at them as they leap along the mountaintops. Listen to the noise they make-- like the rumbling of chariots, like the roar of fire sweeping across a field of stubble, or like a mighty army moving into battle.
6 Fear grips all the people; every face grows pale with terror.
7 The attackers march like warriors and scale city walls like soldiers. Straight forward they march, never breaking rank.
8 They never jostle each other; each moves in exactly the right position. They break through defenses without missing a step.
9 They swarm over the city and run along its walls. They enter all the houses, climbing like thieves through the windows.
10 The earth quakes as they advance, and the heavens tremble. The sun and moon grow dark, and the stars no longer shine.
11 The LORD is at the head of the column. He leads them with a shout. This is his mighty army, and they follow his orders. The day of the LORD is an awesome, terrible thing. Who can possibly survive?
12 That is why the LORD says, "Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning.
13 Don't tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead." Return to the LORD your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.
14 Who knows? Perhaps he will give you a reprieve, sending you a blessing instead of this curse. Perhaps you will be able to offer grain and wine to the LORD your God as before.
15 Blow the ram's horn in Jerusalem! Announce a time of fasting; call the people together for a solemn meeting.
16 Gather all the people-- the elders, the children, and even the babies. Call the bridegroom from his quarters and the bride from her private room.
17 Let the priests, who minister in the LORD's presence, stand and weep between the entry room to the Temple and the altar. Let them pray, "Spare your people, LORD! Don't let your special possession become an object of mockery. Don't let them become a joke for unbelieving foreigners who say, 'Has the God of Israel left them?'"
18 Then the LORD will pity his people and jealously guard the honor of his land.
19 The LORD will reply, "Look! I am sending you grain and new wine and olive oil, enough to satisfy your needs. You will no longer be an object of mockery among the surrounding nations.
20 I will drive away these armies from the north. I will send them into the parched wastelands. Those in the front will be driven into the Dead Sea, and those at the rear into the Mediterranean. The stench of their rotting bodies will rise over the land." Surely the LORD has done great things!
21 Don't be afraid, my people. Be glad now and rejoice, for the LORD has done great things.
22 Don't be afraid, you animals of the field, for the wilderness pastures will soon be green. The trees will again be filled with fruit; fig trees and grapevines will be loaded down once more.
23 Rejoice, you people of Jerusalem! Rejoice in the LORD your God! For the rain he sends demonstrates his faithfulness. Once more the autumn rains will come, as well as the rains of spring.
24 The threshing floors will again be piled high with grain, and the presses will overflow with new wine and olive oil.
25 The LORD says, "I will give you back what you lost to the swarming locusts, the hopping locusts, the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts. It was I who sent this great destroying army against you.
26 Once again you will have all the food you want, and you will praise the LORD your God, who does these miracles for you. Never again will my people be disgraced.
27 Then you will know that I am among my people Israel, that I am the LORD your God, and there is no other. Never again will my people be disgraced.
28 "Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions.
29 In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on servants-- men and women alike.
30 And I will cause wonders in the heavens and on the earth-- blood and fire and columns of smoke.
31 The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and terrible day of the LORD arrives.
32 But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved, for some on Mount Zion in Jerusalem will escape, just as the LORD has said. These will be among the survivors whom the LORD has called.

2 A day H3117 NMS of darkness H2822 NMS and of gloominess H653 , a day H3117 NMS of clouds H6051 NMS and of thick darkness H6205 W-NMS , as the morning H7837 spread H6566 upon H5921 PREP the mountains H2022 : a great H7227 AMS people H5971 NMS and a strong H6099 ; there hath not H3808 NADV been H1961 ever H5769 the like H3644 PART-3MS , neither H3808 NADV shall be any more H3254 after H310 it , even to H5704 PREP the years H8141 of many generations H1755 .
3 A fire H784 CMS devoureth H398 VQQ3FS before H6440 L-CMP-3MS them ; and behind H310 W-PREP-3MS them a flame H3852 burneth H3857 VPY3FS : the land H776 D-GFS is as the garden H1588 K-CMS of Eden H5731 GFS before H6440 L-CMP-3MS them , and behind H310 them a desolate H8077 wilderness H4057 ; yea H1571 W-CONJ , and nothing H3808 NADV shall escape H6413 them .
4 The appearance H4758 of them is as the appearance H4758 CMS-3MS of horses H5483 ; and as horsemen H6571 , so H3651 ADV shall they run H7323 .
5 Like the noise H6963 of chariots H4818 on H5921 PREP the tops H7218 CMP of mountains H2022 shall they leap H7540 , like the noise H6963 of a flame H3851 CMS of fire H784 CMS that devoureth H398 the stubble H7179 , as a strong H6099 people H5971 set in battle array H6186 .
6 Before their face H6440 M-CMP-3MS the people H5971 NMP shall be much pained H2342 : all H3605 NMS faces H6440 NMP shall gather H6908 blackness H6289 .
7 They shall run H7323 like mighty men H1368 ; they shall climb H5927 the wall H2346 like men H376 of war H4421 NFS ; and they shall march H1980 every one H376 W-NMS on his ways H1870 , and they shall not H3808 W-NPAR break H5670 their ranks H734 :
8 Neither H3808 NADV shall one H376 W-NMS thrust H1766 another H251 CMS-3MS ; they shall walk H1980 every one H1397 NMS in his path H4546 : and when they fall H5307 upon H1157 W-PREP the sword H7973 , they shall not H3808 NADV be wounded H1214 .
9 They shall run to and fro H8264 in the city H5892 BD-NFS ; they shall run H7323 upon the wall H2346 , they shall climb up H5927 upon the houses H1004 ; they shall enter in H935 VQY3MP at H1157 PREP the windows H2474 like a thief H1590 KD-NMS .
10 The earth H776 GFS shall quake H7264 before H6440 L-CMP-3MS them ; the heavens H8064 NMS shall tremble H7493 : the sun H8121 and the moon H3394 W-NMS shall be dark H6937 , and the stars H3556 W-NMP shall withdraw H622 their shining H5051 :
11 And the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS shall utter H5414 VQQ3MS his voice H6963 before H6440 L-CMP his army H2428 : for H3588 CONJ his camp H4264 is very H3966 ADV great H7227 AMS : for H3588 CONJ he is strong H6099 that executeth H6213 his word H1697 : for H3588 CONJ the day H3117 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS is great H1419 and very H3966 ADV terrible H3372 ; and who H4310 W-IPRO can abide H3557 it ?
12 Therefore also H1571 W-CONJ now H6258 ADV , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , turn H7725 ye even to H5704 me with all H3605 B-CMS your heart H3824 , and with fasting H6685 , and with weeping H1065 , and with mourning H4553 :
13 And rend H7167 your heart H3824 , and not H408 W-NPAR your garments H899 , and turn H7725 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS your God H430 : for H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS is gracious H2587 AMS and merciful H7349 W-AMS , slow H750 JMS to anger H639 NMD , and of great H7227 W-JMS kindness H2617 NMS , and repenteth H5162 W-VNPMS him of H5921 PREP the evil H7451 D-AFS .
14 Who H4310 IPRO knoweth H3045 VQPMS if he will return H7725 VQY3MS and repent H5162 W-VNPMS , and leave H7604 a blessing H1293 behind H310 him ; even a meat offering H4503 NFS and a drink offering H5262 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS your God H430 ?
15 Blow H8628 the trumpet H7782 in Zion H6726 , sanctify H6942 a fast H6685 NMS , call H7121 a solemn assembly H6116 :
16 Gather H622 the people H5971 NMS , sanctify H6942 the congregation H6951 , assemble H6908 the elders H2205 AMP , gather H622 the children H5768 , and those that suck H3243 the breasts H7699 : let the bridegroom H2860 go forth H3318 VQY3MS of his chamber H2315 , and the bride H3618 out of her closet H2646 .
17 Let the priests H3548 , the ministers H8334 of the LORD H3068 EDS , weep H1058 between H996 PREP the porch H197 and the altar H4196 , and let them say H559 , Spare H2347 thy people H5971 , O LORD H3068 EDS , and give H5414 VQY2MS not H408 W-NPAR thine heritage H5159 to reproach H2781 , that the heathen H1471 NMP should rule H4910 over them : wherefore H4100 L-IPRO should they say H559 VQY3MP among the people H5971 , Where H346 IGAT is their God H430 ?
18 Then will the LORD H3068 EDS be jealous H7065 for his land H776 L-CFS-3MS , and pity H2550 his people H5971 .
19 Yea , the LORD H3068 EDS will answer H6030 W-VQY3MS and say H559 W-VQY3MS unto his people H5971 , Behold H2009 , I will send H7971 you corn H1715 , and wine H8492 , and oil H3323 , and ye shall be satisfied H7646 therewith H854 : and I will no H3808 W-NPAR more H5750 ADV make H5414 VQY1MS you a reproach H2781 among the heathen H1471 :
20 But I will remove far off H7368 from you the northern H6830 army , and will drive H5080 him into H413 PREP a land H776 GFS barren H6723 NFS and desolate H8077 , with H854 PREP his face H6440 CMP-3MS toward H413 PREP the east H6931 sea H3220 D-NMS , and his hinder part H5490 toward H413 PREP the utmost H314 sea H3220 D-NMS , and his stink H889 shall come up H5927 , and his ill savor H6709 shall come up H5927 , because H3588 CONJ he hath done H6213 great things H1431 .
21 Fear H3372 not H408 NPAR , O land H127 ; be glad H1523 and rejoice H8055 : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS will do H6213 great things H1431 .
22 Be not afraid H3372 , ye beasts H929 of the field H7704 : for H3588 CONJ the pastures H4999 of the wilderness H4057 NMS do spring H1876 , for H3588 CONJ the tree H6086 NMS beareth H5375 VQQ3MS her fruit H6529 , the fig tree H8384 and the vine H1612 do yield H5414 their strength H2428 .
23 Be glad H1523 then , ye children H1121 W-CMP of Zion H6726 , and rejoice H8055 in the LORD H3068 your God H430 : for H3588 CONJ he hath given H5414 VQQ3MS you the former rain H4175 moderately H6666 , and he will cause to come down H3381 for you the rain H1653 , the former rain H4175 , and the latter rain H4456 in the first H7223 month .
24 And the floors H1637 shall be full H4390 of wheat H1250 , and the fats H3342 shall overflow H7783 with wine H8492 and oil H3323 .
25 And I will restore H7999 to you the years H8141 that H834 RPRO the locust H697 hath eaten H398 VQQ3MS , the cankerworm H3218 , and the caterpillar H2625 , and the palmerworm H1501 , my great H1419 D-AMS army H2428 which H834 RPRO I sent H7971 among you .
26 And ye shall eat in plenty H398 , and be satisfied H7646 , and praise H1984 the name H8034 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS your God H430 , that H834 RPRO hath dealt H6213 VQQ3MS wondrously H6381 with H5973 PREP-3MP you : and my people H5971 shall never H3808 W-NPAR be ashamed H954 .
27 And ye shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 W-PPRO-1MS am in the midst H7130 of Israel H3478 , and that I H589 W-PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 EDS your God H430 , and none H369 W-NPAR else H5750 ADV : and my people H5971 shall never H3808 W-NPAR be ashamed H954 .
28 And it shall come to pass H1961 afterward H310 PREP , that I will pour out H8210 my spirit H7307 CFS-1MS upon H5921 PREP all H3605 flesh H1320 NMS ; and your sons H1121 and your daughters H1323 shall prophesy H5012 , your old men H2205 shall dream H2492 dreams H2472 , your young men H970 shall see H7200 visions H2384 :
29 And also H1571 W-CONJ upon H5921 PREP the servants H5650 and upon H5921 PREP the handmaids H8198 in those H1992 days H3117 BD-NMP will I pour out H8210 my spirit H7307 CMS-1MS .
30 And I will show H5414 wonders H4159 in the heavens H8064 BD-NMP and in the earth H776 , blood H1818 NMS , and fire H784 , and pillars H8490 of smoke H6227 .
31 The sun H8121 D-NMS shall be turned H2015 into darkness H2822 , and the moon H3394 into blood H1818 L-NMS , before H6440 the great H1419 D-AMS and the terrible H3372 day H3117 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS come H935 VQFC .
32 And it shall come to pass H1961 , that whosoever H3605 NMS shall call H7121 VQY3MS on the name H8034 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS shall be delivered H4422 : for H3588 in mount H2022 Zion H6726 and in Jerusalem H3389 shall be H1961 VQY2MS deliverance H6413 , as H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS hath said H559 VQQ3MS , and in the remnant H8300 whom H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS shall call H7121 .
