Revelation 18:8 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 After all this I saw another angel come down from heaven with great authority, and the earth grew bright with his splendor.
2 He gave a mighty shout: "Babylon is fallen-- that great city is fallen! She has become a home for demons. She is a hideout for every foul spirit, a hideout for every foul vulture and every foul and dreadful animal.
3 For all the nations have fallen because of the wine of her passionate immorality. The kings of the world have committed adultery with her. Because of her desires for extravagant luxury, the merchants of the world have grown rich."
4 Then I heard another voice calling from heaven, "Come away from her, my people. Do not take part in her sins, or you will be punished with her.
5 For her sins are piled as high as heaven, and God remembers her evil deeds.
6 Do to her as she has done to others. Double her penalty for all her evil deeds. She brewed a cup of terror for others, so brew twice as much for her.
7 She glorified herself and lived in luxury, so match it now with torment and sorrow. She boasted in her heart, 'I am queen on my throne. I am no helpless widow, and I have no reason to mourn.'
8 Therefore, these plagues will overtake her in a single day-- death and mourning and famine. She will be completely consumed by fire, for the Lord God who judges her is mighty."
9 And the kings of the world who committed adultery with her and enjoyed her great luxury will mourn for her as they see the smoke rising from her charred remains.
10 They will stand at a distance, terrified by her great torment. They will cry out, "How terrible, how terrible for you, O Babylon, you great city! In a single moment God's judgment came on you."
11 The merchants of the world will weep and mourn for her, for there is no one left to buy their goods.
12 She bought great quantities of gold, silver, jewels, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet cloth; things made of fragrant thyine wood, ivory goods, and objects made of expensive wood; and bronze, iron, and marble.
13 She also bought cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, chariots, and bodies-- that is, human slaves.
14 "The fancy things you loved so much are gone," they cry. "All your luxuries and splendor are gone forever, never to be yours again."
15 The merchants who became wealthy by selling her these things will stand at a distance, terrified by her great torment. They will weep and cry out,
16 "How terrible, how terrible for that great city! She was clothed in finest purple and scarlet linens, decked out with gold and precious stones and pearls!
17 In a single moment all the wealth of the city is gone!" And all the captains of the merchant ships and their passengers and sailors and crews will stand at a distance.
18 They will cry out as they watch the smoke ascend, and they will say, "Where is there another city as great as this?"
19 And they will weep and throw dust on their heads to show their grief. And they will cry out, "How terrible, how terrible for that great city! The shipowners became wealthy by transporting her great wealth on the seas. In a single moment it is all gone."
20 Rejoice over her fate, O heaven and people of God and apostles and prophets! For at last God has judged her for your sakes.
21 Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a huge millstone. He threw it into the ocean and shouted, "Just like this, the great city Babylon will be thrown down with violence and will never be found again.
22 The sound of harps, singers, flutes, and trumpets will never be heard in you again. No craftsmen and no trades will ever be found in you again. The sound of the mill will never be heard in you again.
23 The light of a lamp will never shine in you again. The happy voices of brides and grooms will never be heard in you again. For your merchants were the greatest in the world, and you deceived the nations with your sorceries.
24 In your streets flowed the blood of the prophets and of God's holy people and the blood of people slaughtered all over the world."

2 And G2532 CONJ he cried G2896 V-AAI-3S mightily G1722 PREP with a strong G3173 A-NSF voice G5456 N-DSF , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Babylon G897 N-NSF the G3588 T-NSF great G3173 A-NSF is fallen G4098 V-2AAI-3S , is fallen G4098 V-2AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ is become G1096 V-2ADI-3S the habitation G2732 N-NSN of devils G1142 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ the hold G5438 N-NSF of every G3956 A-GSN foul G169 A-GSN spirit G4151 N-GSN , and G2532 CONJ a cage G5438 N-NSF of every G3956 A-GSN unclean G169 A-GSN and G2532 CONJ hateful G3404 V-RPP-GSN bird G3732 N-GSN .
3 For G3754 CONJ all G3956 A-NPN nations G1484 N-NPN have drunk G4095 of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSM wine G3631 N-GSM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM wrath G2372 N-GSM of G3588 T-GSF her G3588 T-GSF fornication G4202 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM kings G935 N-NPM of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF have committed fornication G4203 V-AAI-3P with G3326 PREP her G846 P-GSF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM merchants G1713 N-NPM of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF are waxed rich G4147 V-AAI-3P through G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSF abundance G1411 N-GSF of G3588 T-GSN her G3588 T-GSN delicacies G4764 N-GSN .
4 And G2532 CONJ I heard G191 V-AAI-1S another G243 A-ASF voice G5456 N-ASF from G1537 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-ASF , Come G1831 V-2AAM-2S out of G1537 PREP her G846 P-GSF , my G3588 T-NSM people G2992 N-NSM , that G2443 CONJ ye be not partakers G4790 V-AAS-2P of G3588 T-DPF her G3588 T-DPF sins G266 N-DPF , and G2532 CONJ that G2443 CONJ ye receive G2983 V-2AAS-2P not G3361 PRT-N of G1537 PREP her G3588 T-GPF plagues G4127 N-GPF .
5 For G3754 CONJ her G3588 T-NPF sins G266 N-NPF have reached G190 unto G891 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ God G2316 N-NSM hath remembered G3421 V-AAI-3S her G3588 T-APN iniquities G92 N-APN .
6 Reward G591 V-2AAM-2P her G846 P-DSF even G2532 CONJ as G5613 ADV she G846 P-DSF rewarded G591 V-AAI-3S you G5213 P-2DP , and G2532 CONJ double G1363 V-AAM-2P unto her G846 P-GSF double G1362 A-APN according G2596 PREP to her G3588 T-APN works G2041 N-APN : in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN cup G4221 N-DSN which G3739 R-DSN she hath filled G2767 V-AAI-3S fill G2767 V-AAM-2P to her G846 P-DSF double G1362 A-ASN .
7 How much G3745 K-APN she hath glorified G1392 V-AAI-3S herself G1438 F-3ASF , and G2532 CONJ lived deliciously G4763 V-AAI-3S , so much G5118 D-ASN torment G929 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ sorrow G3997 N-ASN give G1325 V-2AAM-2P her G846 P-DSF : for G3754 CONJ she saith G3004 V-PAI-3S in G1722 PREP her G3588 T-DSF heart G2588 N-DSF , I sit G2521 V-PNI-1S a queen G938 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ am G1510 V-PXI-1S no G3756 PRT-N widow G5503 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ shall see G1492 V-2AAS-1S no G3364 sorrow G3997 N-ASN .
8 Therefore G1223 PREP shall her G3588 T-NPF plagues G4127 N-NPF come G2240 V-FAI-3P in G1722 PREP one G3391 day G2250 N-DSF , death G2288 N-NSM , and G2532 CONJ mourning G3997 N-NSN , and G2532 CONJ famine G3042 N-NSM ; and G2532 CONJ she shall be utterly burned G2618 V-FPI-3S with G1722 PREP fire G4442 N-DSN : for G3754 CONJ strong G2478 A-NSM is the G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM God G2316 N-NSM who judgeth G2919 V-AAP-NSM her G846 P-GSF .
9 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM kings G935 N-NPM of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF , who have committed fornication G4203 V-AAP-NPM and G2532 CONJ lived deliciously G4763 V-AAP-NPM with G3326 PREP her G846 P-ASF , shall bewail G2799 V-FAI-3P her G846 P-GSF , and G2532 CONJ lament G2875 V-FDI-3P for G1909 PREP her G846 P-GSF , when G3752 CONJ they shall see G991 V-PAS-3P the G3588 T-ASM smoke G2586 N-ASM of G3588 T-GSF her G3588 T-GSF burning G4451 N-GSF ,
10 Standing G2476 V-RAP-NPM afar off G575 PREP for G1223 PREP the G3588 T-ASM fear G5401 N-ASM of G3588 T-GSM her G3588 T-GSM torment G929 N-GSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Alas G3759 INJ , alas G3759 INJ that G3588 T-NSF great G3173 A-NSF city G4172 N-NSF Babylon G897 N-NSF , that G3588 T-NSF mighty G2478 A-NSF city G4172 N-NSF ! for G3754 CONJ in G1722 one G3391 hour G5610 N-DSF is thy G3588 T-NSF judgment G2920 N-NSF come G2064 V-2AAI-3S .
11 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM merchants G1713 N-NPM of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF shall weep G2799 V-FAI-3P and G2532 CONJ mourn G3996 V-FAI-3P over G1909 PREP her G846 P-DSF ; for G3754 CONJ no man G3762 A-NSM buyeth G59 V-PAI-3S their G3588 T-ASM merchandise G1117 N-ASM any more G3765 ADV :
12 The merchandise G1117 N-ASM of gold G5557 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ silver G696 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ precious G5093 A-GSF stones G3037 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ of pearls G3135 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ fine linen G1040 , and G2532 CONJ purple G4209 , and G2532 CONJ silk G4596 A-GSN , and G2532 CONJ scarlet G2847 A-GSN , and G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-ASN thyine G2367 A-ASN wood G3586 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ all manner G3956 A-ASN vessels G4632 N-ASN of ivory G1661 A-ASN , and G2532 CONJ all manner G3956 A-ASN vessels G4632 N-ASN of G1537 PREP most precious G5093 A-GSN-S wood G3586 N-GSN , and G2532 CONJ of brass G5475 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ iron G4604 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ marble G3139 N-GSM ,
13 And G2532 CONJ cinnamon G2792 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ odors G2368 N-APN , and G2532 CONJ ointments G3464 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ frankincense G3030 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ wine G3631 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ oil G1637 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ fine flour G4585 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ wheat G4621 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ beasts G2934 N-APN , and G2532 CONJ sheep G4263 N-APN , and G2532 CONJ horses G2462 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ chariots G4480 N-GPF , and G2532 CONJ slaves G4983 N-GPN , and G2532 CONJ souls G5590 N-APF of men G444 N-GPM .
14 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF fruits G3703 N-NSF that G3588 T-GSF thy G3588 T-GSF soul G5590 N-GSF lusted after G1939 N-GSF are departed G565 V-2AAI-3S from G575 PREP thee G4675 P-2GS , and G2532 CONJ all things G3956 A-NPN which were dainty G3045 A-NPN and G2532 CONJ goodly G2986 A-NPN are departed G565 V-2AAI-3S from G575 PREP thee G4675 P-2GS , and G2532 CONJ thou shalt find G2147 V-2AAS-2S them G846 P-APN no more at all G3765 ADV .
15 The G3588 T-NPM merchants G1713 N-NPM of these things G5130 D-GPN , which were made rich G4147 V-AAP-NPM by G575 PREP her G846 P-GSF , shall stand G2476 V-FDI-3P afar off G575 PREP for G1223 PREP the G3588 T-ASM fear G5401 N-ASM of G3588 T-GSM her G3588 T-GSM torment G929 N-GSM , weeping G2799 V-PAP-NPM and G2532 CONJ wailing G3996 V-PAP-NPM ,
16 And G2532 CONJ saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Alas G3759 INJ , alas G3759 INJ that G3588 T-NSF great G3173 A-NSF city G4172 N-NSF , that was clothed G4016 V-RPP-NSF in fine linen G1039 A-ASN , and G2532 CONJ purple G4210 A-ASN , and G2532 CONJ scarlet G2847 A-ASN , and G2532 CONJ decked G5558 V-RPP-NSF with G1722 gold G5557 , and G2532 CONJ precious G5093 A-DSM stones G3037 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ pearls G3135 N-DPM !
17 For G3754 CONJ in one G3391 hour G5610 N-DSF so great G5118 D-NSM riches G4149 N-NSM is come to naught G2049 V-API-3S . And G2532 CONJ every G3956 A-NSM shipmaster G2942 N-NSM , and G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NSM the G3588 T-NSM company G3658 in G1909 PREP ships G4143 , and G2532 CONJ sailors G3492 N-NPM , and G2532 CONJ as many as G3745 K-NPM trade G2038 V-PNI-3P by sea G2281 N-ASF , stood G2476 V-2AAI-3P afar off G575 PREP ,
18 And G2532 CONJ cried G2896 V-IAI-3P when they saw G3708 the G3588 T-ASM smoke G2586 N-ASM of G3588 T-GSF her G3588 T-GSF burning G4451 N-GSF , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , What G5101 I-NSF city is like unto G3664 A-NSF this G3588 T-DSF great G3173 A-DSF city G4172 N-DSF !

22 And G2532 CONJ the voice G5456 N-NSF of harpers G2790 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ musicians G3451 A-GPM , and G2532 CONJ of pipers G834 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ trumpeters G4538 N-GPM , shall be heard G191 V-APS-3S no more at all G2089 ADV in G1722 PREP thee G4671 P-2DS ; and no G3956 A-NSM craftsman G5079 N-NSM , of whatsoever G3956 A-GSF craft G5078 N-GSF he be , shall be found G2147 V-APS-3S any more G2089 ADV in G1722 PREP thee G4671 P-2DS ; and G2532 CONJ the sound G5456 N-NSF of a millstone G3458 N-GSM shall be heard G191 V-APS-3S no more at all G2089 ADV in G1722 PREP thee G4671 P-2DS ;
23 And G2532 CONJ the light G5457 N-NSN of a candle G3088 N-GSM shall shine G5316 V-2APS-3S no more at all G2089 ADV in G1722 PREP thee G4671 P-2DS ; and G2532 CONJ the voice G5456 N-NSF of the bridegroom G3566 N-GSM and G2532 CONJ of the bride G3565 N-GSF shall be heard G191 V-APS-3S no more at all G2089 ADV in G1722 PREP thee G4671 P-2DS : for G3754 CONJ thy G3588 T-NPM merchants G1713 N-NPM were G2258 V-IXI-3P the G3588 T-NPM great men G3175 N-NPM of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF ; for G3754 CONJ by G1722 PREP thy G3588 T-DSF sorceries G5331 N-DSF were all G3956 A-NPN nations G1484 N-NPN deceived G4105 V-API-3P .
24 And G2532 CONJ in G1722 PREP her G846 P-DSF was found G2147 V-API-3S the blood G129 N-NPN of prophets G4396 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ of saints G40 A-GPM , and G2532 CONJ of G3588 T-GPM all G3956 A-GPM that were slain G4969 V-RPP-GPM upon G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF .
