Deuteronomy 17:15 (RSV) Revised Standard Version

1 "You shall not sacrifice to the LORD your God an ox or a sheep in which is a blemish, any defect whatever; for that is an abomination to the LORD your God.
2 "If there is found among you, within any of your towns which the LORD your God gives you, a man or woman who does what is evil in the sight of the LORD your God, in transgressing his covenant,
3 and has gone and served other gods and worshiped them, or the sun or the moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have forbidden,
4 and it is told you and you hear of it; then you shall inquire diligently, and if it is true and certain that such an abominable thing has been done in Israel,
5 then you shall bring forth to your gates that man or woman who has done this evil thing, and you shall stone that man or woman to death with stones.
6 On the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses he that is to die shall be put to death; a person shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness.
7 The hand of the witnesses shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So you shall purge the evil from the midst of you.
8 "If any case arises requiring decision between one kind of homicide and another, one kind of legal right and another, or one kind of assault and another, any case within your towns which is too difficult for you, then you shall arise and go up to the place which the LORD your God will choose,
9 and coming to the Levitical priests, and to the judge who is in office in those days, you shall consult them, and they shall declare to you the decision.
10 Then you shall do according to what they declare to you from that place which the LORD will choose; and you shall be careful to do according to all that they direct you;
11 according to the instructions which they give you, and according to the decision which they pronounce to you, you shall do; you shall not turn aside from the verdict which they declare to you, either to the right hand or to the left.
12 The man who acts presumptuously, by not obeying the priest who stands to minister there before the LORD your God, or the judge, that man shall die; so you shall purge the evil from Israel.
13 And all the people shall hear, and fear, and not act presumptuously again.
14 "When you come to the land which the LORD your God gives you, and you possess it and dwell in it, and then say, `I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are round about me';
15 you may indeed set as king over you him whom the LORD your God will choose. One from among your brethren you shall set as king over you; you may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother.
16 Only he must not multiply horses for himself, or cause the people to return to Egypt in order to multiply horses, since the LORD has said to you, `You shall never return that way again.'
17 And he shall not multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply for himself silver and gold.
18 "And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, from that which is in the charge of the Levitical priests;
19 and it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them;
20 that his heart may not be lifted up above his brethren, and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, either to the right hand or to the left; so that he may continue long in his kingdom, he and his children, in Israel.

2 If H3588 CONJ there be found H4672 among H7130 you , within any H259 of thy gates H8179 which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS giveth H5414 VQPMS thee , man H376 NMS or H176 CONJ woman H802 NFS , that H834 RPRO hath wrought H6213 VQY3MS wickedness H7451 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS thy God H430 CMP-2MS , in transgressing H5674 his covenant H1285 ,
3 And hath gone H1980 W-VQY3MS and served H5647 other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP , and worshiped H7812 them , either the sun H8121 , or H176 CONJ moon H3394 , or H176 CONJ any H3605 L-CMS of the host H6635 of heaven H8064 D-NMD , which H834 RPRO I have not H3808 NADV commanded H6680 ;
4 And it be told H5046 thee , and thou hast heard H8085 of it , and inquired H1875 diligently H3190 VHFA , and , behold H2009 IJEC , it be true H571 CFS , and the thing H1697 D-NMS certain H3559 NMS , that such H2063 D-DFS abomination H8441 is wrought H6213 in Israel H3478 :
5 Then shalt thou bring forth that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS man H376 D-NMS or H176 CONJ that H1931 D-PPRO-3FS woman H802 D-NFS , which H834 RPRO have committed H6213 VQQ3MP that H2088 D-PMS wicked H7451 D-AMS thing H1697 D-NMS , unto H413 PREP thy gates H8179 , even that man H376 D-NMS or H176 CONJ that woman H802 D-NFS , and shalt stone H5619 them with stones H68 , till they die H4191 .
6 At H5921 PREP the mouth H6310 of two H8147 ONUM witnesses H5707 , or H176 CONJ three H7969 NFS witnesses H5707 , shall he that is worthy of death H4191 be put to death H4191 ; but at H5921 PREP the mouth H6310 of one H259 ONUM witness H5707 he shall not H3808 NADV be put to death H4191 .
7 The hands H3027 CFS of the witnesses H5707 shall be H1961 VQY2MS first H7223 upon him to put him to death H4191 , and afterward H314 the hands H3027 of all H3605 NMS the people H5971 . So thou shalt put the evil away H1197 from among H7130 you .
8 If H3588 CONJ there arise a matter too hard H6381 for H4480 PREP-2MS thee in judgment H4941 , between H996 W-PREP blood H1818 NMS and blood H1818 L-NMS , between H996 W-PREP plea H1779 NMS and plea H1779 , and between H996 W-PREP stroke H5061 and stroke H5061 , being matters H1697 NMS of controversy H7379 within thy gates H8179 : then shalt thou arise H6965 , and get thee up H5927 into H413 PREP the place H4725 D-NMS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS shall choose H977 ;
9 And thou shalt come H935 W-VQQ2MS unto H413 PREP the priests H3548 the Levites H3881 , and unto H413 PREP the judge H8199 that H834 RPRO shall be H1961 VQY3MS in those H1992 D-PPRO-3MP days H3117 BD-NMP , and inquire H1875 ; and they shall show H5046 thee the sentence H1697 CMS of judgment H4941 :
10 And thou shalt do H6213 according to PREP the sentence H1697 D-NMS , which H834 RPRO they of H4480 PREP that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS place H4725 D-NMS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS shall choose H977 shall show H5046 thee ; and thou shalt observe H8104 to do H6213 L-VQFC according to all H3605 K-NMS that H834 RPRO they inform H3384 thee :
11 According to H5921 PREP the sentence H6310 of the law H8451 which H834 RPRO they shall teach H3384 VHY3MP-2MS thee , and according to H5921 PREP the judgment H4941 which H834 RPRO they shall tell H559 VQY3MP thee , thou shalt do H6213 VQY2MS : thou shalt not H3808 NADV decline H5493 from H4480 PREP the sentence H1697 D-NMS which H834 RPRO they shall show H5046 thee , to the right hand H3225 NFS , nor to the left H8040 .
12 And the man H376 D-NMS that H834 RPRO will do H6213 VQY3MS presumptuously H2087 , and will not H1115 L-NPAR hearken H8085 unto H413 PREP the priest H3548 that standeth H5975 to minister H8334 there H8033 ADV before H854 the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS , or H176 CONJ unto H413 PREP the judge H8199 , even that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS man H376 D-NMS shall die H4191 : and thou shalt put away H1197 the evil H7451 D-AMS from Israel H3478 .
13 And all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 shall hear H8085 VQY3MP , and fear H3372 , and do no H3808 W-NPAR more H5750 ADV presumptuously H2102 .
14 When H3588 CONJ thou art come H935 unto H413 PREP the land H776 D-GFS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS giveth H5414 VQPMS thee , and shalt possess H3423 it , and shalt dwell H3427 therein , and shalt say H559 , I will set H7760 a king H4428 NMS over H5921 PREP-1MS me , like as all H3605 the nations H1471 D-NMP that H834 RPRO are about H5439 me ;
15 Thou shalt in any wise set H7760 him king H4428 NMS over H5921 PREP-2MS thee , whom H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS shall choose H977 : one from among H7130 thy brethren H251 CMS-2MS shalt thou set H7760 VQY2MS king H4428 NMS over H5921 PREP-2MS thee : thou mayest H3201 not H3808 NADV set H5414 L-VQFC a stranger H5237 AMS over H5921 PREP-2MS thee , which H834 RPRO is not H3808 ADV thy brother H251 CMS-2MS .
16 But H7535 ADV he shall not H3808 NADV multiply H7235 horses H5483 to himself , nor H3808 ADV cause the people H5971 to return H7725 VHY3MS to Egypt H4714 TFS-3FS , to the end that H4616 L-CONJ he should multiply H7235 horses H5483 : forasmuch as the LORD H3068 W-EDS hath said H559 VQQ3MS unto you , Ye shall henceforth H3254 return H7725 no H3808 NADV more H5750 ADV that H2088 D-PMS way H1870 .
17 Neither H3808 W-NPAR shall he multiply H7235 wives H802 GFP to himself , that his heart H3824 turn not away H5493 VQY3MS : neither H3808 W-NPAR shall he greatly H3966 ADV multiply H7235 to himself silver H3701 W-CMS and gold H2091 .
18 And it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when he sitteth H3427 upon H5921 PREP the throne H3678 of his kingdom H4467 CFS-3MS , that he shall write H3789 him a copy H4932 of this H2063 D-DFS law H8451 in H5921 PREP a book H5612 CMS out of that which is before H6440 ML-CMP the priests H3548 the Levites H3881 :
19 And it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3FS with H5973 PREP-3MS him , and he shall read H7121 therein all H3605 NMS the days H3117 CMP of his life H2416 : that H4616 L-CONJ he may learn H3925 to fear H3372 the LORD H3068 EDS his God H430 CMP-3MS , to keep H8104 L-VQFC all H3605 NMS the words H1697 CMP of this H2063 D-DFS law H8451 and these H428 D-DPRO-3MP statutes H2706 , to do H6213 them :
20 That his heart H3824 be not H1115 L-NPAR lifted up H7311 above his brethren H251 , and that he turn not aside H5493 VQI2MS from H4480 PREP the commandment H4687 , to the right hand H3225 NFS , or to the left H8040 : to the end that H4616 L-CONJ he may prolong H748 his days H3117 NMP in H5921 PREP his kingdom H4467 CFS-3MS , he H1931 PPRO-3MS , and his children H1121 W-CMP-3MS , in the midst H7130 of Israel H3478 LMS .
