2 Samuel 11:27 (RV) Revised Version

1 And it came to pass, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out {cf15i to battle}, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem.
2 And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king-s house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
3 And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; (for she was purified from her uncleanness;) and she returned unto her house.
5 And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
6 And David sent to Joab, {cf15i saying}, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
7 And when Uriah was come unto him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.
8 And David said to Uriah, Go down thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king-s house, and there followed him a mess {cf15i of meat} from the king.
9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king-s house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
10 And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Art thou not come from a journey? wherefore didst thou not go down unto thine house?
11 And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
12 And David said to Uriah, Tarry here today also, and tomorrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.
13 And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
14 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.
16 And it came to pass, when Joab kept watch upon the city, that he assigned Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men were.
17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;
19 and he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling all the things concerning the war unto the king,
20 it shall be that, if the king-s wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore went ye so nigh unto the city to fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?
21 who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast an upper millstone upon him from the wall, that he died at Thebez? why went ye so nigh the wall? then shalt thou say, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
22 So the messenger went, and came and shewed David all that Joab had sent him for.
23 And the messenger said unto David, The men prevailed against us and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.
24 And the shooters shot at thy servants from off the wall; and some of the king-s servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
25 Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.
26 And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.
27 And when the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.

2 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in an eveningtide H6256 L-CMS , that David H1732 MMS arose H6965 W-VQY3MS from off H5921 M-PREP his bed H4904 CMS-3MS , and walked H1980 W-VTY3MS upon H5921 M-PREP the roof H1406 of the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 CMS : and from M-PREP the roof H1406 he saw H7200 W-VIY3MS a woman H802 NFS washing H7364 herself ; and the woman H802 was very H3966 ADV beautiful H2896 to look H4758 NMS upon .
3 And David H1732 MMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS and inquired H1875 after the woman H802 . And one said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is not H3808 D-NPAR this H2063 DPRO Bath H1339 - sheba , the daughter H1323 CFS of Eliam H463 , the wife H802 CFS of Uriah H223 the Hittite H2850 ?
4 And David H1732 MMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 , and took H3947 W-VQY3MS her ; and she came H935 W-VQY3FS in unto H413 PREP-3MS him , and he lay H7901 W-VQY3MS with her H5973 PREP-3FS ; for she H1931 was purified H6942 from her uncleanness H2932 : and she returned H7725 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP her house H1004 .
5 And the woman H802 D-NFS conceived H2029 W-VQY3FS , and sent H7971 and told H5046 David H1732 L-NAME , and said H559 W-VQY3FS , I H595 PPRO-1MS am with child H2030 .
6 And David H1732 MMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Joab H3097 , saying , Send H7971 me Uriah H223 the Hittite H2850 . And Joab H3097 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS Uriah H223 to H413 PREP David H1732 .
7 And when Uriah H223 was come H935 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , David H1732 MMS demanded H7592 W-VQY3MS of him how Joab H3097 did H7965 , and how the people H5971 did H7965 , and how the war H4421 prospered H7965 .
8 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS to Uriah H223 , Go down H3381 to thy house H1004 , and wash H7364 thy feet H7272 . And Uriah H223 departed H3318 W-VQY3MS out of the king\'s house H1004 , and there followed H310 PREP-3MS him a mess H4864 of meat from the king H4428 D-NMS .
9 But Uriah H223 slept H7901 W-VQY3MS at the door H6607 CMS of the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 CMS with H854 PREP all H3605 NMS the servants H5650 of his lord H113 , and went H3381 VQQ3MS not H3808 W-NPAR down to H413 PREP his house H1004 CMS-3MS .
10 And when they had told H5046 David H1732 L-NAME , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Uriah H223 went not down H3381 VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP his house H1004 NMS-3MS , David H1732 L-NAME said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Uriah H223 , Camest H935 thou H859 PPRO-2MS not H3808 ADV from thy journey H1870 ? why H4069 IPRO then didst thou not H3808 ADV go down H3381 unto H413 PREP thine house H1004 ?
11 And Uriah H223 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , The ark H727 , and Israel H3478 , and Judah H3063 , abide H3427 in tents H5521 ; and my lord H113 Joab H3097 , and the servants H5650 of my lord H113 , are encamped H2583 in H5921 PREP the open H6440 CMP fields H7704 D-NMS ; shall I H589 W-PPRO-1MS then go H935 VQI1MS into H413 PREP mine house H1004 CMS-1MS , to eat H398 L-VQFC and to drink H8354 WL-VQFC , and to lie H7901 with H5973 PREP my wife H802 CFS-1MS ? as thou livest H2416 , and as thy soul H5315 liveth H2416 , I will not do H6213 this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS .
12 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Uriah H223 , Tarry H3427 here H2088 today H3117 D-AMS also H1571 CONJ , and tomorrow H4279 I will let thee depart H7971 . So Uriah H223 abode H3427 W-VQY3MS in Jerusalem H3389 that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS , and the morrow H4283 .
13 And when David H1732 had called H7121 W-VQY3MS him , he did eat H398 and drink H8354 W-VQY3MS before H6440 L-CMP-3MS him ; and he made him drunk H7937 : and at even H6153 he went out H3318 W-VQY3MS to lie H7901 on his bed H4904 with H5973 PREP the servants H5650 of his lord H113 , but went H3381 not H3808 NADV down to H413 W-PREP his house H1004 NMS-3MS .
14 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in the morning H1242 , that David H1732 MMS wrote H3789 a letter H5612 CMS to H413 PREP Joab H3097 , and sent H7971 W-VQY3MS it by the hand H3027 B-CFS of Uriah H223 .
15 And he wrote H3789 in the letter H5612 BD-NMS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Set H3051 VQI2MP ye Uriah H223 in H413 PREP the forefront H4136 of the hottest H2389 battle H4421 , and retire H7725 ye from him , that he may be smitten H5221 , and die H4191 .
16 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when Joab H3097 observed H8104 the city H5892 D-GFS , that he assigned H5414 W-VQQ3MS Uriah H223 unto H413 PREP a place H4725 D-NMS where H834 RPRO he knew H3045 VQQ3MS that H3588 CONJ valiant H2428 NMS men H376 CMP were .
17 And the men H376 of the city H5892 D-GFS went out H3318 W-VQY3MP , and fought H3898 with H854 PREP Joab H3097 : and there fell H5307 W-VQY3MS some of H4480 PREP the people H5971 of the servants H5650 of David H1732 ; and Uriah H223 the Hittite H2850 died H4191 W-VQY3MS also H1571 CONJ .
18 Then Joab H3097 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS and told H5046 W-VHY3MS David H1732 L-NAME all H3605 NMS the things H1697 CMP concerning the war H4421 ;
19 And charged H6680 W-VPY3MS the messenger H4397 , saying H559 L-VQFC , When thou hast made an end H3615 of telling H1696 the matters H1697 CMP of the war H4421 unto H413 PREP the king H4428 ,
20 And if H518 PART so be H1961 W-VQQ3MS that the king H4428 D-NMS \'s wrath H2534 arise H5927 , and he say H559 unto thee , Wherefore H4069 IPRO approached H5066 ye so nigh unto H413 PREP the city H5892 D-GFS when ye did fight H3898 ? knew H3045 ye not H3808 D-NPAR that H834 RPRO they would shoot H3384 from M-PREP the wall H2346 ?
21 Who H4310 IPRO smote H5221 Abimelech H40 the son H1121 of Jerubbesheth H3380 ? did not H3808 a woman H802 NFS cast H7993 a piece H6400 of a millstone H7393 upon H5921 PREP-3MS him from PREP-3MS the wall H2346 , that he died H4191 W-VQY3MS in Thebez H8405 ? why H4100 L-IPRO went ye nigh H5066 the wall H2346 ? then say H559 thou , Thy servant H5650 Uriah H223 the Hittite H2850 is dead H4191 also H1571 CONJ .
22 So the messenger H4397 went H1980 W-VQY3MS , and came H935 W-VQY3MS and showed H5046 W-VHY3MS David H1732 L-NAME all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO Joab H3097 had sent H7971 him for .
23 And the messenger H4397 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , Surely H3588 CONJ the men H376 prevailed H1396 against H5921 PREP-1MP us , and came out H3318 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP us into the field H7704 D-NMS , and we were H1961 upon H5921 PREP-3MP them even unto H5704 PREP the entering H6607 CMS of the gate H8179 .
24 And the shooters H3384 shot H3384 from off H5921 M-PREP the wall H2346 upon H413 PREP thy servants H5650 ; and some of the king\'s servants H5650 be dead H4191 W-VQY3MP , and thy servant H5650 Uriah H223 the Hittite H2850 is dead H4191 also H1571 W-CONJ .
25 Then David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the messenger H4397 , Thus H3541 shalt thou say H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Joab H3097 , Let not H408 NPAR this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS displease H5869 thee , for H3588 CONJ the sword H2719 devoureth H398 VQY2MS one H2088 as well as another H2090 : make thy battle H4421 more strong H2388 against H413 PREP the city H5892 D-GFS , and overthrow H2040 it : and encourage H2388 thou him .
26 And when the wife H802 CFS of Uriah H223 heard H8085 that H3588 CONJ Uriah H223 her husband H376 was dead H4191 , she mourned H5594 for H5921 PREP her husband H1167 .
27 And when the mourning H60 was past H5674 W-VQY3MS , David H1732 MMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS and fetched H622 her to H413 PREP his house H1004 NMS-3MS , and she became H1961 W-VQY3FS his wife H802 L-NFS , and bore H3205 W-VQY3FS him a son H1121 NMS . But the thing H1697 D-NMS that H834 RPRO David H1732 had done H6213 VQQ3MS displeased H5869 B-CMP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
