Isaiah 37:2 (WEB) World English Bible

1 It happened, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Yahweh.
2 He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
3 They said to him, Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the birth, and there is no strength to bring forth.
4 It may be Yahweh your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.
5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
6 Isaiah said to them, Thus shall you tell your master, Thus says Yahweh, Don't be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear news, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
9 He heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come out to fight against you. When he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
10 Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Don't let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.
11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shall you be delivered?
12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden who were in Telassar?
13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?
14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of Yahweh, and spread it before Yahweh.
15 Hezekiah prayed to Yahweh, saying,
16 Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, who sits above the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.
17 Turn your ear, Yahweh, and hear; open your eyes, Yahweh, and behold; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who has sent to defy the living God.
18 Of a truth, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the countries, and their land,
19 and have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.
20 Now therefore, Yahweh our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are Yahweh, even you only.
21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, Whereas you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria,
22 this is the word which Yahweh has spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.
23 Whom have you defied and blasphemed? and against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
24 By your servants have you defied the Lord, and have said, With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars of it, and the choice fir trees of it; and I will enter into its farthest height, the forest of its fruitful field;
25 I have dug and drunk water, and with the sole of my feet will I dry up all the rivers of Egypt.
26 Have you not heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? now have I brought it to pass, that it should be your to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.
27 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as a field of grain before it is grown up.
28 But I know your sitting down, and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging against me.
29 Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance is come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.
30 This shall be the sign to you: you shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow you , and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of it.
31 The remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.
32 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of Mount Zion those who shall escape. The zeal of Yahweh of Hosts will perform this.
33 Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.
34 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come to this city, says Yahweh.
35 For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
36 The angel of Yahweh went forth, and struck in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.
37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and lived at Nineveh.
38 It happened, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.
1 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when king H4428 D-NMS Hezekiah H2396 heard H8085 it , that he rent H7167 W-VQY3MS his clothes H899 , and covered himself H3680 with sackcloth H8242 , and went H935 W-VQY3MS into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
2 And he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS Eliakim H471 , who H834 RPRO was over H5921 PREP the household H1004 D-NMS , and Shebna H7644 the scribe H5608 , and the elders H2205 of the priests H3548 covered H3680 with sackcloth H8242 , unto H413 PREP Isaiah H3470 the prophet H5030 the son H1121 CMS of Amoz H531 .
3 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS Hezekiah H2396 , This H2088 D-PMS day H3117 NMS is a day H3117 NUM-MS of trouble H6869 NFS , and of rebuke H8433 , and of blasphemy H5007 : for H3588 CONJ the children H1121 NMP are come H935 VQQ3MP to H5704 PREP the birth H4866 , and there is not H369 ADV strength H3581 to bring forth H3205 .
4 It may be H194 ADV the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS will hear H8085 VQY3MS the words H1697 CMP of Rab H7262 - shakeh , whom H834 RPRO the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS his master H113 hath sent H7971 to reproach H2778 the living H2416 AMS God H430 CMP-2MS , and will reprove H3198 the words H1697 which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS hath heard H8085 VQY3MS : wherefore lift up H5375 thy prayer H8605 for H1157 PREP the remnant H7611 that is left H4672 .
5 So the servants H5650 of king H4428 D-NMS Hezekiah H2396 came H935 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP Isaiah H3470 .
6 And Isaiah H3470 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , Thus H3541 shall ye say H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP your master H113 , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Be not afraid H3372 of M-CMP the words H1697 AMP that H834 RPRO thou hast heard H8085 VQQ2MS , wherewith H834 RPRO the servants H5288 of the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS have blasphemed H1442 me .
7 Behold H2009 , I will send H5414 a blast H7307 NFS upon him , and he shall hear H8085 a rumor H8052 , and return H7725 W-VQQ3MS to H413 PREP his own land H776 ; and I will cause him to fall H5307 by the sword H2719 in his own land H776 .
8 So Rab H7262 - shakeh returned H7725 , and found H4672 W-VQY3MS the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS warring H3898 against H5921 PREP Libnah H3841 : for H3588 CONJ he had heard H8085 that H3588 CONJ he was departed H5265 from Lachish H3923 .
9 And he heard H8085 say H559 L-VQFC concerning H5921 PREP Tirhakah H8640 king H4428 NMS of Ethiopia H3568 EMS , He is come forth H3318 VQQ3MS to make war H3898 with H854 PART-2MS thee . And when he heard H8085 it , he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 to H413 PREP Hezekiah H2396 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
10 Thus H3541 shall ye speak H559 to H413 PREP Hezekiah H2396 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Let not H408 NPAR thy God H430 CMP-2MS , in whom H834 RPRO thou H859 PPRO-2MS trustest H982 , deceive H5377 thee , saying H559 L-VQFC , Jerusalem H3389 shall not H3808 NADV be given H5414 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 .
11 Behold H2009 IJEC , thou H859 PPRO-2MS hast heard H8085 VQQ2MS what H834 RPRO the kings H4428 CMP of Assyria H804 GFS have done H6213 VQQ3MP to all H3605 L-CMS lands H776 by destroying them utterly H2763 ; and shalt thou H859 PPRO-2FS be delivered H5337 ?
12 Have the gods H430 CDP of the nations H1471 D-NMP delivered H5337 them which H834 RPRO my fathers H1 have destroyed H7843 , as Gozan H1470 , and Haran H2771 EMS , and Rezeph H7530 , and the children H1121 W-CMP of Eden H5729 which H834 RPRO were in Telassar H8515 ?
13 Where H346 IGAT is the king H4428 NMS of Hamath H2574 , and the king H4428 NMS of Arphad H774 , and the king H4428 NMS of the city H5892 L-NMS of Sepharvaim H5617 , Hena H2012 , and Ivah H5755 ?
14 And Hezekiah H2396 received H3947 W-VQY3MS the letter H5612 from the hand H3027 M-GFS of the messengers H4397 , and read H7121 it : and Hezekiah H2396 went up H5927 W-VHY3MS unto the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and spread H6566 it before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
15 And Hezekiah H2396 prayed H6419 W-VTY3MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
16 O LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , that dwellest H3427 VQPMS between the cherubims H3742 D-NMP , thou H859 PPRO-2MS art the God H430 D-NAME-4MP , even thou alone H905 , of all H3605 the kingdoms H4467 of the earth H776 D-GFS : thou H859 PPRO-2MS hast made H6213 VQQ2MS heaven H8064 D-NMD and earth H776 D-GFS .
17 Incline H5186 thine ear H241 , O LORD H3068 EDS , and hear H8085 ; open H6491 thine eyes H5869 CMD-2MS , O LORD H3068 EDS , and see H7200 W-VQI2MS : and hear H8085 all H3605 NMS the words H1697 CMP of Sennacherib H5576 , which H834 RPRO hath sent H7971 VQQ3MS to reproach H2778 the living H2416 AMS God H430 EDP .
18 Of a truth H551 CONJ , LORD H3068 EDS , the kings H4428 CMP of Assyria H804 GFS have laid waste H2717 all H3605 NMS the nations H776 , and their countries H776 ,
19 And have cast H5414 their gods H430 NAME-4MP into the fire H784 : for H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP were no H3808 NADV gods H430 EDP , but H518 PART the work H4639 M-CMS of men H120 NMS \'s hands H3027 , wood H6086 NMS and stone H68 : therefore they have destroyed H6 them .
20 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore , O LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 , save H3467 us from his hand H3027 , that all H3605 NMS the kingdoms H4467 of the earth H776 D-GFS may know H3045 that H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS art the LORD H3068 EDS , even thou only H905 .
21 Then Isaiah H3470 the son H1121 CMS of Amoz H531 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Hezekiah H2396 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , Whereas H834 RPRO thou hast prayed H6419 to H413 PREP me against H413 PREP Sennacherib H5576 king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 :
22 This H2088 DPRO is the word H1697 D-NMS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS hath spoken H1696 VPQ3MS concerning H5921 PREP-3MS him ; The virgin H1330 , the daughter H1323 CFS of Zion H6726 , hath despised H936 thee , and laughed thee to scorn H3932 ; the daughter H1323 CFS of Jerusalem H3389 hath shaken H5128 her head H7218 NMS at H310 thee .
23 Whom H4310 IPRO hast thou reproached H2778 and blasphemed H1442 ? and against H5921 W-PREP whom H4310 IPRO hast thou exalted H7311 thy voice H6963 , and lifted up H5375 thine eyes H5869 CMD-2MS on high H4791 ? even against H413 PREP the Holy One H6918 of Israel H3478 LMS .
24 By H3027 B-CFS thy servants H5650 hast thou reproached H2778 the Lord H136 EDS , and hast said H559 W-VQY3FS , By the multitude H7230 of my chariots H7393 am I H589 PPRO-1MS come up H5927 to the height H4791 of the mountains H2022 NMP , to the sides H3411 CFS of Lebanon H3844 ; and I will cut down H3772 the tall H6967 cedars H730 thereof , and the choice H4005 fir trees H1265 thereof : and I will enter H935 into the height H4791 of his border H7093 , and the forest H3293 of his Carmel H3759 .
25 I H589 PPRO-1MS have digged H6979 , and drunk H8354 water H4325 NMD ; and with the sole H3709 of my feet H6471 have I dried up H2717 all H3605 NMS the rivers H2975 of the besieged places H4693 .
26 Hast thou not H3808 heard H8085 VQQ2MS long ago H7350 , how I have done H6213 VQQ1MS it ; and of ancient H6924 NMS times H3117 , that I have formed H3335 it ? now H6258 ADV have I brought it to pass H935 , that thou shouldest be H1961 W-VQI3FS to lay waste H7582 defensed H1219 cities H5892 GFP into ruinous H5327 heaps H1530 .
27 Therefore their inhabitants H3427 were of small H7116 power H3027 NFS , they were dismayed H2865 VQQ3MP and confounded H954 : they were H1961 VQQ3MP as the grass H6212 NMS of the field H7704 , and as the green H3419 herb H1877 NMS , as the grass H2682 on the housetops H1406 , and as corn blasted H7711 before H6440 L-CMP it be grown up H7054 .
28 But I know H3045 thy abode H3427 , and thy going out H3318 , and thy coming in H935 , and thy rage H7264 against H413 me .
29 Because H3282 ADV thy rage H7264 against H413 PREP-1MS me , and thy tumult H7600 , is come up H5927 into mine ears H241 B-CFD-1MS , therefore will I put H7760 W-VQQ1MS my hook H2397 in thy nose H639 , and my bridle H4964 in thy lips H8193 , and I will turn thee back H7725 by the way H1870 by which H834 RPRO thou camest H935 .
30 And this H2088 W-PMS shall be a sign H226 unto thee , Ye shall eat H398 this year H8141 such as groweth of itself H5599 ; and the second H8145 D-ONUM year H8141 that which springeth of the same H7823 : and in the third H7992 D-MFS year H8141 sow H2232 ye , and reap H7114 , and plant H5193 vineyards H3754 , and eat H398 the fruit H6529 thereof .
31 And the remnant H7604 that is escaped H6413 of the house H1004 CMS of Judah H3063 shall again H3254 take root H8328 downward H4295 , and bear H6213 W-VQQ3MS fruit H6529 CMS upward H4605 :
32 For H3588 CONJ out of Jerusalem H3389 shall go forth H3318 a remnant H7611 , and they that escape H6413 out of mount H2022 Zion H6726 : the zeal H7068 of the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 shall do H6213 VQY2MS this H2063 DPRO .
33 Therefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS concerning H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS , He shall not H3808 NADV come H935 VQY3MS into H413 PREP this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS , nor H3808 ADV shoot H3384 an arrow H2671 there H8033 ADV , nor H3808 ADV come before H6923 it with shields H4043 NMS , nor H3808 ADV cast H8210 VQY3MS a bank H5550 against H5921 it .
34 By the way H1870 that H834 RPRO he came H935 VQPMS , by the same shall he return H7725 VQY3MS , and shall not H3808 NADV come H935 VQY3MS into H413 W-PREP this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
35 For I will defend H1598 this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS to save H3467 it for mine own sake H4616 , and for my servant H5650 David H1732 MMS \'s sake H4616 .
36 Then the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS went forth H3318 W-VQY3MS , and smote H5221 in the camp H4264 of the Assyrians H804 GFS a hundred H3967 MFS and fourscore H8084 W-MMP and five H2568 thousand H505 MMS : and when they arose early H7925 in the morning H1242 , behold H2009 IJEC , they were all H3605 dead H4191 corpses H6297 .
37 So Sennacherib H5576 king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS departed H5265 W-VQY3MS , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS and returned H7725 , and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MS at Nineveh H5210 .
38 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , as he H1931 PPRO-3MS was worshiping H7812 in the house H1004 CMS of Nisroch H5268 his god H430 CMP-3MS , that Adrammelech H152 and Sharezer H8272 his sons H1121 CMP-3MS smote H5221 him with the sword H2719 ; and they H1992 escaped H4422 into the land H776 GFS of Armenia H780 : and Esar H634 - haddon his son H1121 CMS-3MS reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 .
