1 Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother's brothers, and spoke with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,

2 Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you? Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

3 His mother's brothers spoke of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

4 They gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal Berith, with which Abimelech hired vain and light fellows, who followed him.

5 He went to his father's house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone: but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

6 All the men of Shechem assembled themselves together, and all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.

7 When they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said to them, Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.

8 The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive tree, Reign you over us.

9 But the olive tree said to them, Should I leave my fatness, with which by me they honor God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?

10 The trees said to the fig tree, Come you, and reign over us.

11 But the fig tree said to them, Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?

12 The trees said to the vine, Come you, and reign over us.

13 The vine said to them, Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?

14 Then said all the trees to the bramble, Come you, and reign over us.

15 The bramble said to the trees, If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

16 Now therefore, if you have dealt truly and righteously, in that you have made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him according to the deserving of his hands

17 (for my father fought for you, and adventured his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

18 and you are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, seventy persons, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maid-servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);

19 if you then have dealt truly and righteously with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice you in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

20 but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

21 Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and lived there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

22 Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.

23 God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

24 that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.

25 The men of Shechem set liers-in-wait for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

26 Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.

27 They went out into the field, and gathered their vineyards, and trod the grapes, and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

28 Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Isn't he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve you the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: but why should we serve him?

29 Would that this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. He said to Abimelech, Increase your army, and come out.

30 When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

31 He sent messengers to Abimelech craftily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers are come to Shechem; and, behold, they constrain the city to take part against you.

32 Now therefore, up by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field:

33 and it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early, and rush on the city; and, behold, when he and the people who are with him come out against you, then may you do to them as you shall find occasion.

34 Abimelech rose up, and all the people who were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

35 Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people who were with him, from the ambush.

36 When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the tops of the mountains. Zebul said to him, You see the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

37 Gaal spoke again and said, Behold, there come people down by the middle of the land, and one company comes by the way of the oak of Meonenim.

38 Then said Zebul to him, Where is now your mouth, that you said, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that you have despised? go out now, I pray, and fight with them.

39 Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

40 Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and there fell many wounded, even to the entrance of the gate.

41 Abimelech lived at Arumah: and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brothers, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

42 It happened on the next day, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

43 He took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and, behold, the people came forth out of the city; He rose up against them, and struck them.

44 Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and the two companies rushed on all who were in the field, and struck them.

45 Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and killed the people who were therein: and he beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

46 When all the men of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.

47 It was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

48 Abimelech got him up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder: and he said to the people who were with him, What you have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

49 All the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire on them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

50 Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and there fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut themselves in, and got them up to the roof of the tower.

52 Abimelech came to the tower, and fought against it, and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

53 A certain woman cast an upper millstone on Abimelech's head, and broke his skull.

54 Then he called hastily to the young man his armor bearer, and said to him, Draw your sword, and kill me, that men not say of me, A woman killed him. His young man thrust him through, and he died.

55 When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man to his place.

56 Thus God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did to his father, in killing his seventy brothers;

57 and all the wickedness of the men of Shechem did God requite on their heads: and on them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

7 And when they told ^H5046 it to Jotham ^H3147 , he went ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MS and stood ^H5975 in the top ^H7218 ^B-NMS of mount ^H2022 ^CMS Gerizim ^H1630 , and lifted up ^H5375 ^W-VQY3MS his voice ^H6963 , and cried ^H7121 ^W-VQY3MS , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto them , Hearken ^H8085 ^VQI2MP unto ^H413 ^PREP-1MS me , ye men ^H1167 ^CMP of Shechem ^H7927 ^LMS , that God ^H430 ^NAME-4MP may hearken ^H8085 ^VQI2MP unto ^H413 you .

8 The trees ^H6086 went forth ^VQFA on a time to anoint ^H4886 a king ^H4428 ^NMS over ^H5921 ^PREP-3MP them ; and they said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP unto the olive tree ^H2132 , Reign ^H4427 thou over ^H5921 us .

10 And the trees ^H6086 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP to the fig tree ^H8384 , Come ^H1980 thou ^H859 , and reign ^H4427 over ^H5921 us .

11 But the fig tree ^H8384 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3FS unto them , Should I forsake ^H2308 my sweetness ^H4987 , and my good ^H2896 fruit ^H8570 , and go ^H1980 to be promoted ^H5128 over ^H5921 ^PREP the trees ^H6086 ?

12 Then said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP the trees ^H6086 unto the vine ^H1612 , Come ^H1980 thou ^H859 , and reign ^H4427 over ^H5921 us .

13 And the vine ^H1612 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3FS unto them , Should I leave ^H2308 my wine ^H8492 , which cheereth ^H8055 God ^H430 ^EDP and man ^H376 , and go ^H1980 to be promoted ^H5128 over ^H5921 ^PREP the trees ^H6086 ?

14 Then said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP all ^H3605 ^CMS the trees ^H6086 unto ^H413 ^PREP the bramble ^H329 , Come ^H1980 ^VQI2MS thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS , and reign ^H4427 over ^H5921 us .

15 And the bramble ^H329 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP the trees ^H6086 , If ^H518 ^PART in truth ^H571 ye ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS anoint ^H4886 me king ^H4428 ^L-CMS over ^H5921 ^PREP-2MP you , then come ^H935 and put your trust ^H2620 in my shadow ^H6738 : and if ^H518 ^PART not ^H369 ^ADV , let fire ^H784 ^CMS come out ^H3318 of ^H4480 ^PREP the bramble ^H329 , and devour ^H398 the cedars ^H730 of Lebanon ^H3844 .

21 And Jotham ^H3147 ran away ^H5127 , and fled ^H1272 ^W-VQY3MS , and went ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MS to Beer ^H876 , and dwelt ^H3427 ^W-VQY3MS there ^H8033 ^ADV , for fear ^H6440 ^M-CMP of Abimelech ^H40 his brother ^H251 ^CMP-3MS .

22 When Abimelech ^H40 had reigned ^H7786 three ^H7969 ^MFS years ^H8141 over ^H5921 ^PREP Israel ^H3478 ,

23 Then God ^H430 ^EDP sent ^H7971 ^W-VQY3MS an evil ^H7451 ^AFS spirit ^H7307 ^NFS between ^H996 ^PREP Abimelech ^H40 and the men ^H1167 ^CMP of Shechem ^H7927 ^LMS ; and the men ^H1167 of Shechem ^H7927 ^LMS dealt treacherously ^H898 with Abimelech ^H40 :

24 That the cruelty ^H2555 done to the threescore and ten ^H7657 ^ONUM sons ^H1121 of Jerubbaal ^H3378 might come ^H935 ^L-VQFC , and their blood ^H1818 be laid ^H7760 ^L-VQFC upon ^H5921 ^PREP Abimelech ^H40 their brother ^H251 ^CMS-3MP , which ^H834 ^RPRO slew ^H2026 them ; and upon ^H5921 ^PREP the men ^H1167 ^CMP of Shechem ^H7927 ^LMS , which ^H834 ^RPRO aided ^H2388 him in the killing ^H2026 of his brethren ^H251 .

25 And the men ^H1167 of Shechem ^H7927 ^LMS set ^H7760 ^W-VQY3MP liers in wait ^H693 for him in ^H5921 ^PREP the top ^H7218 ^CMP of the mountains ^H2022 , and they robbed ^H1497 all ^H3605 ^NMS that ^H834 ^RPRO came along ^H5674 ^VQY3MS that way ^H1870 by ^H5921 ^PREP them : and it was told ^H5046 Abimelech ^H40 .

26 And Gaal ^H1603 the son ^H1121 of Ebed ^H5651 came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS with his brethren ^H251 , and went over ^H5674 to Shechem ^H7927 : and the men ^H1167 ^CMP of Shechem ^H7927 put their confidence ^H982 in him .

27 And they went out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MP into the fields ^H7704 ^D-NMS , and gathered ^H1219 their vineyards ^H3754 , and trod ^H1869 the grapes , and made ^H6213 ^W-EMS merry ^H1974 , and went into ^H935 ^W-VQY3MP the house ^H1004 ^CMS of their god ^H430 , and did eat ^H398 and drink ^H8354 , and cursed ^H7043 Abimelech ^H40 .

28 And Gaal ^H1603 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Ebed ^H5651 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Who ^H4310 ^IPRO is Abimelech ^H40 , and who ^H4310 ^W-IGAT is Shechem ^H7927 ^LMS , that ^H3588 ^CONJ we should serve ^H5647 him ? is not ^H3808 ^I-NADV he the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Jerubbaal ^H3378 ? and Zebul ^H2083 his officer ^H6496 ? serve ^H5647 the men ^H376 ^CMP of Hamor ^H2544 the father ^H1 ^CMS-1MS of Shechem ^H7928 : for why ^H4069 should we ^H587 ^PPRO-1MP serve ^H5647 him ?

29 And would to God ^H4310 ^W-IPRO this ^H2088 ^D-PMS people ^H5971 were under my hand ^H3027 ^B-CFS-1MS ! then would I remove ^H5493 Abimelech ^H40 . And he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS to Abimelech ^H40 , Increase ^H7235 thine army ^H6635 , and come out ^H3318 .

30 And when Zebul ^H2083 the ruler ^H8269 of the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS heard ^H8085 the words ^H1697 ^CMP of Gaal ^H1603 the son ^H1121 of Ebed ^H5651 , his anger ^H639 ^CMS-3MS was kindled ^H2734 ^W-VQY3MS .

31 And he sent ^H7971 ^W-VQY3MS messengers ^H4397 unto ^H413 ^PREP Abimelech ^H40 privily ^H8649 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , Gaal ^H1603 the son ^H1121 of Ebed ^H5651 and his brethren ^H251 be come ^H935 to Shechem ^H7927 ; and , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , they fortify ^H6696 the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS against ^H5921 ^PREP-2MS thee .

32 Now ^H6258 ^W-ADV therefore up ^H6965 ^VQI2MS by night ^H3915 ^GMS , thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS and the people ^H5971 that ^H834 ^RPRO is with ^H854 ^PART-2MS thee , and lie in wait ^H693 in the field ^H7704 :

33 And it shall be ^H1961 ^W-VQQ3MS , that in the morning ^H1242 , as soon as the sun ^H8121 ^D-NMS is up ^H2224 ^K-VQFC , thou shalt rise early ^H7925 , and set ^H6584 upon ^H5921 ^PREP the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS : and , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , when he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS and the people ^H5971 that ^H834 ^RPRO is with ^H854 ^PREP-3MS him come out ^H3318 against ^H413 ^PREP-2MS thee , then mayest thou do ^H6213 to them as ^H834 ^RPRO thou shalt find ^H4672 ^VQY2MS occasion ^H3027 .

34 And Abimelech ^H40 rose up ^H6965 ^W-VQY3MS , and all ^H3605 ^W-CMS the people ^H5971 that ^H834 ^RPRO were with ^H5973 ^PREP-3MS him , by night ^H3915 ^NFS , and they laid wait ^H693 against ^H5921 ^PREP Shechem ^H7927 ^LMS in four ^H702 ^MMS companies ^H7218 ^NMP .

35 And Gaal ^H1603 the son ^H1121 of Ebed ^H5651 went out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MS , and stood ^H5975 ^W-VQY3MS in the entering ^H6607 ^CMS of the gate ^H8179 ^NMS of the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS : and Abimelech ^H40 rose up ^H6965 ^W-VQY3MS , and the people ^H5971 that ^H834 ^RPRO were with ^H854 ^PREP-3MS him , from ^H4480 ^PREP lying in wait ^H3993 .

36 And when Gaal ^H1603 saw ^H7200 ^W-VIY3MS the people ^H5971 , he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS to ^H413 ^PREP Zebul ^H2083 , Behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , there come people down ^H3381 ^VQPMS from the top ^H7218 of the mountains ^H2022 . And Zebul ^H2083 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him , Thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS seest ^H7200 ^W-VIY3MS the shadow ^H6738 ^NMS of the mountains ^H2022 as if they were men ^H376 .

37 And Gaal ^H1603 spoke ^H1696 again ^H3254 ^W-VHPMS and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , See ^H2009 ^IJEC there come people down ^H3381 by ^M-PREP the middle ^H2872 of the land ^H776 ^D-GFS , and another ^H259 ^MMS company ^H7218 come ^H935 ^VQPMS along by ^M-PREP the plain ^H436 ^CMS of Meonenim ^H6049 .

38 Then said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS Zebul ^H2083 unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him , Where ^H346 ^IGAT is now ^H645 ^CONJ thy mouth ^H6310 ^CMS-2MS , wherewith ^H834 ^RPRO thou saidst ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Who ^H4310 ^IPRO is Abimelech ^H40 , that ^H3588 ^CONJ we should serve ^H5647 him ? is not ^H3808 ^I-NADV this ^H2088 ^DPRO the people ^H5971 that ^H834 ^RPRO thou hast despised ^H3988 ? go out ^H3318 ^VQI2MS , I pray ^H4994 ^IJEC now ^H6258 ^ADV , and fight ^H3898 with them .

40 And Abimelech ^H40 chased ^H7291 him , and he fled ^H5127 before ^H6440 ^M-CMP-3MS him , and many ^H7227 ^AMP were overthrown ^H5307 ^W-VQY3MP and wounded ^H2491 ^NMP , even unto ^H5704 ^PREP the entering ^H6607 ^CMS of the gate ^H8179 .

41 And Abimelech ^H40 dwelt ^H3427 ^W-VQY3MS at Arumah ^H725 : and Zebul ^H2083 thrust out ^H1644 ^W-VPQ3MS Gaal ^H1603 and his brethren ^H251 ^NMP-3MS , that they should not dwell ^H3427 in Shechem ^H7927 .

42 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VPY3MS on the morrow ^H4283 , that the people ^H5971 went out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MS into the field ^H7704 ^D-NMS ; and they told ^H5046 Abimelech ^H40 .

43 And he took ^H3947 ^W-VQY3MS the people ^H5971 , and divided ^H2673 them into three ^H7969 companies ^H7218 ^NMP , and laid wait ^H693 in the field ^H7704 ^B-NMS , and looked ^H7200 ^W-VIY3MS , and , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , the people ^H5971 were come forth ^H3318 ^VQPMS out of ^H4480 ^PREP the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS ; and he rose up ^H6965 ^W-VQY3MS against ^H5921 ^PREP-3MP them , and smote ^H5221 them .

49 And all ^H3605 ^NMS the people ^H5971 likewise ^H1571 ^CONJ cut down ^H3772 every man ^H376 ^NMS his bough ^H7754 , and followed ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MP Abimelech ^H40 , and put ^H7760 ^W-VQY3MP them to ^H5921 ^PREP the hold ^H6877 , and set ^H3341 the hold ^H6877 on fire ^H784 upon ^H5921 ^PREP-3MP them ; so that all ^H3605 ^NMS the men ^H376 ^NMS of the tower ^H4026 of Shechem ^H7927 ^LMS died ^H4191 also ^H1571 ^CONJ , about a thousand ^H505 men ^H376 ^NMS and women ^H802 .

50 Then went ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MS Abimelech ^H40 to ^H413 ^PREP Thebez ^H8405 , and encamped ^H2583 against Thebez ^H8405 , and took ^H3920 it .

51 But there was ^H1961 ^VQQ3MS a strong ^H5797 ^NMS tower ^H4026 within ^H8432 the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS , and thither ^H8033 ^ADV-3FS fled ^H5127 ^W-VQY3MP all ^H3605 ^NMS the men ^H376 and women ^H802 , and all ^H3605 ^NMS they ^H1167 ^CMP of the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS , and shut ^H5462 it to ^H1157 them , and got them up ^H5927 to ^H5921 ^PREP the top ^H1406 of the tower ^H4026 .

52 And Abimelech ^H40 came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H5704 ^PREP the tower ^H4026 ^D-NMS , and fought ^H3898 against it , and went hard ^H5066 unto ^H5704 ^PREP the door ^H6607 ^CMS of the tower ^H4026 ^D-NMS to burn ^H8313 it with fire ^H784 .

53 And a certain ^H259 ^OFS woman ^H802 ^NFS cast ^H7993 a piece ^H6400 of a millstone ^H7393 upon ^H5921 ^PREP Abimelech ^H40 \'s head ^H7218 ^NMS , and all to broke ^H7533 his skull ^H1538 .

54 Then he called ^H7121 ^W-VQY3MS hastily ^H4120 unto ^H413 ^PREP the young man ^H5288 his armorbearer ^H5375 , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto him , Draw ^H8025 thy sword ^H2719 , and slay ^H4191 me , that ^H6435 ^CONJ men say ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS not of me , A woman ^H802 ^NFS slew ^H2026 him . And his young man ^H5288 thrust him through ^H1856 , and he died ^H4191 ^W-VQY3MS .

55 And when the men ^H376 ^NMS of Israel ^H3478 saw ^H7200 ^W-VQY3MP that ^H3588 ^CONJ Abimelech ^H40 was dead ^H4191 , they departed ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MP every man ^H376 ^NMS unto his place ^H4725 .

56 Thus God ^H430 ^EDP rendered ^H7725 ^W-VHY3MS the wickedness ^H7451 ^CFS of Abimelech ^H40 , which ^H834 ^RPRO he did ^H6213 ^VQQ3MS unto his father ^H1 , in slaying ^H2026 his seventy ^H7657 ^ONUM brethren ^H251 :

57 And all ^H3605 ^NMS the evil ^H7451 ^CFS of the men ^H376 ^CMP of Shechem ^H7927 ^LMS did God ^H430 ^EDP render ^H7725 ^VHQ3MS upon their heads ^H7218 : and upon ^H413 ^PREP-3MP them came ^H935 ^W-VQY3FS the curse ^H7045 of Jotham ^H3147 the son ^H1121 of Jerubbaal ^H3378 .
