1. Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. His mother was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah from Bozkath.

2. He did what was pleasing in the LORD's sight and followed the example of his ancestor David. He did not turn away from doing what was right.

2. And he did H6213 that which was right H3477 in the sight H5869 of the LORD H3068 , and walked H1980 in all H3605 the way H1870 of David H1732 his father H1 , and turned not aside H3808 H5493 to the right hand H3225 or to the left H8040 .

3. In the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah sent Shaphan son of Azaliah and grandson of Meshullam, the court secretary, to the Temple of the LORD. He told him,

3. And it came to pass H1961 in the eighteenth H8083 H6240 year H8141 of king H4428 Josiah H2977 , that the king H4428 sent H7971 H853 Shaphan H8227 the son H1121 of Azaliah H683 , the son H1121 of Meshullam H4918 , the scribe H5608 , to the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 , saying H559 ,

4. "Go to Hilkiah the high priest and have him count the money the gatekeepers have collected from the people at the LORD's Temple.

4. Go up H5927 to H413 Hilkiah H2518 the high H1419 priest H3548 , that he may sum H8552 H853 the silver H3701 which is brought H935 into the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 , which H834 the keepers H8104 of the door H5592 have gathered H622 of H4480 H854 the people H5971 :

5. Entrust this money to the men assigned to supervise the Temple's restoration. Then they can use it to pay workers to repair the Temple of the LORD.

5. And let them deliver H5414 it into H5921 the hand H3027 of the doers H6213 of the work H4399 , that have the oversight H6485 of the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 : and let them give H5414 it to the doers H6213 of the work H4399 which H834 is in the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 , to repair H2388 the breaches H919 of the house H1004 ,

6. They will need to hire carpenters, builders, and masons. Also have them buy the timber and the finished stone needed to repair the Temple.

6. Unto carpenters H2796 , and builders H1129 , and masons H1443 , and to buy H7069 timber H6086 and hewn H4274 stone H68 to repair H2388 H853 the house H1004 .

|
7. But don't require the construction supervisors to keep account of the money they receive, for they are honest and trustworthy men."

7. Howbeit H389 there was no H3808 reckoning H2803 made with H854 them of the money H3701 that was delivered H5414 into H5921 their hand H3027 , because H3588 they H1992 dealt H6213 faithfully H530 .

8. Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the court secretary, "I have found the Book of the Law in the LORD's Temple!" Then Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan, and he read it.

8. And Hilkiah H2518 the high H1419 priest H3548 said H559 unto H5921 Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 , I have found H4672 the book H5612 of the law H8451 in the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 . And Hilkiah H2518 gave H5414 H853 the book H5612 to H413 Shaphan H8227 , and he read H7121 it.

9. Shaphan went to the king and reported, "Your officials have turned over the money collected at the Temple of the LORD to the workers and supervisors at the Temple."

9. And Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 came H935 to H413 the king H4428 , and brought the king word again H7725 H853 H4428 H1697 , and said H559 , Thy servants H5650 have gathered H5413 H853 the money H3701 that was found H4672 in the house H1004 , and have delivered H5414 it into H5921 the hand H3027 of them that do H6213 the work H4399 , that have the oversight H6485 of the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 .

10. Shaphan also told the king, "Hilkiah the priest has given me a scroll." So Shaphan read it to the king.

10. And Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 showed H5046 the king H4428 , saying H559 , Hilkiah H2518 the priest H3548 hath delivered H5414 me a book H5612 . And Shaphan H8227 read H7121 it before H6440 the king H4428 .

11. When the king heard what was written in the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes in despair.

11. And it came to pass H1961 , when the king H4428 had heard H8085 H853 the words H1697 of the book H5612 of the law H8451 , that he rent H7167 H853 his clothes H899 .

12. Then he gave these orders to Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Acbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the court secretary, and Asaiah the king's personal adviser:

12. And the king H4428 commanded H6680 H853 Hilkiah H2518 the priest H3548 , and Ahikam H296 the son H1121 of Shaphan H8227 , and Achbor H5907 the son H1121 of Michaiah H4320 , and Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 , and Asahiah H6222 a servant H5650 of the king H4428 's, saying H559 ,

13. "Go to the Temple and speak to the LORD for me and for the people and for all Judah. Inquire about the words written in this scroll that has been found. For the LORD's great anger is burning against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the words in this scroll. We have not been doing everything it says we must do."

13. Go H1980 ye, inquire H1875 of H853 the LORD H3068 for H1157 me , and for H1157 the people H5971 , and for H1157 all H3605 Judah H3063 , concerning H5921 the words H1697 of this H2088 book H5612 that is found H4672 : for H3588 great H1419 is the wrath H2534 of the LORD H3068 that H834 is kindled H3341 against us, because H5921 H834 our fathers H1 have not H3808 hearkened H8085 unto H5921 the words H1697 of this H2088 book H5612 , to do H6213 according unto all H3605 that which is written H3789 concerning H5921 us.

14. So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Acbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to the New Quarter of Jerusalem to consult with the prophet Huldah. She was the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, the keeper of the Temple wardrobe.

14. So Hilkiah H2518 the priest H3548 , and Ahikam H296 , and Achbor H5907 , and Shaphan H8227 , and Asahiah H6222 , went H1980 unto H413 Huldah H2468 the prophetess H5031 , the wife H802 of Shallum H7967 the son H1121 of Tikvah H8616 , the son H1121 of Harhas H2745 , keeper H8104 of the wardrobe H899 ; (now she H1931 dwelt H3427 in Jerusalem H3389 in the college H4932 ;) and they communed H1696 with H413 her.

15. She said to them, "The LORD, the God of Israel, has spoken! Go back and tell the man who sent you,
|
15. And she said H559 unto H413 them, Thus H3541 saith H559 the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478 , Tell H559 the man H376 that H834 sent H7971 you to H413 me,

|
16. 'This is what the LORD says: I am going to bring disaster on this city and its people. All the words written in the scroll that the king of Judah has read will come true.

16. Thus H3541 saith H559 the LORD H3068 , Behold H2009 , I will bring H935 evil H7451 upon H413 this H2088 place H4725 , and upon H5921 the inhabitants H3427 thereof, even H853 all H3605 the words H1697 of the book H5612 which H834 the king H4428 of Judah H3063 hath read H7121 :

17. For my people have abandoned me and offered sacrifices to pagan gods, and I am very angry with them for everything they have done. My anger will burn against this place, and it will not be quenched.'

17. Because H8478 H834 they have forsaken H5800 me , and have burned incense H6999 unto other H312 gods H430 , that H4616 they might provoke me to anger H3707 with all H3605 the works H4639 of their hands H3027 ; therefore my wrath H2534 shall be kindled H3341 against this H2088 place H4725 , and shall not H3808 be quenched H3518 .

18. "But go to the king of Judah who sent you to seek the LORD and tell him: 'This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says concerning the message you have just heard:

18. But to H413 the king H4428 of Judah H3063 which sent H7971 you to inquire H1875 of H853 the LORD H3068 , thus H3541 shall ye say H559 to H413 him, Thus H3541 saith H559 the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478 , As touching the words H1697 which H834 thou hast heard H8085 ;

19. You were sorry and humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I said against this city and its people-- that this land would be cursed and become desolate. You tore your clothing in despair and wept before me in repentance. And I have indeed heard you, says the LORD.

19. Because H3282 thine heart H3824 was tender H7401 , and thou hast humbled thyself H3665 before H4480 H6440 the LORD H3068 , when thou heardest H8085 what H834 I spoke H1696 against H5921 this H2088 place H4725 , and against H5921 the inhabitants H3427 thereof , that they should become H1961 a desolation H8047 and a curse H7045 , and hast rent H7167 H853 thy clothes H899 , and wept H1058 before H6440 me; I H595 also H1571 have heard H8085 thee , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 .

20. So I will not send the promised disaster until after you have died and been buried in peace. You will not see the disaster I am going to bring on this city.' " So they took her message back to the king.

20. Behold H2009 therefore H3651 , I will gather H622 thee unto H5921 thy fathers H1 , and thou shalt be gathered H622 into H413 thy grave H6913 in peace H7965 ; and thine eyes H5869 shall not H3808 see H7200 all H3605 the evil H7451 which H834 I H589 will bring H935 upon H5921 this H2088 place H4725 . And they brought H7725 H853 the king H4428 word H1697 again.
