Obadiah 1 (NLT) New Living Translation

1 This is the vision that the Sovereign LORD revealed to Obadiah concerning the land of Edom. We have heard a message from the LORD that an ambassador was sent to the nations to say, "Get ready, everyone! Let's assemble our armies and attack Edom!"
2 The LORD says to Edom, "I will cut you down to size among the nations; you will be greatly despised.
3 You have been deceived by your own pride because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains. 'Who can ever reach us way up here?' you ask boastfully.
4 But even if you soared as high as eagles and built your nest among the stars, I would bring you crashing down," says the LORD.
5 "If thieves came at night and robbed you (what a disaster awaits you!), they would not take everything. Those who harvest grapes always leave a few for the poor. But your enemies will wipe you out completely!
6 Every nook and cranny of Edom will be searched and looted. Every treasure will be found and taken.
7 "All your allies will turn against you. They will help to chase you from your land. They will promise you peace while plotting to deceive and destroy you. Your trusted friends will set traps for you, and you won't even know about it.
8 At that time not a single wise person will be left in the whole land of Edom," says the LORD. "For on the mountains of Edom I will destroy everyone who has understanding.
9 The mightiest warriors of Teman will be terrified, and everyone on the mountains of Edom will be cut down in the slaughter.
10 "Because of the violence you did to your close relatives in Israel, you will be filled with shame and destroyed forever.
11 When they were invaded, you stood aloof, refusing to help them. Foreign invaders carried off their wealth and cast lots to divide up Jerusalem, but you acted like one of Israel's enemies.
12 "You should not have gloated when they exiled your relatives to distant lands. You should not have rejoiced when the people of Judah suffered such misfortune. You should not have spoken arrogantly in that terrible time of trouble.
13 You should not have plundered the land of Israel when they were suffering such calamity. You should not have gloated over their destruction when they were suffering such calamity. You should not have seized their wealth when they were suffering such calamity.
14 You should not have stood at the crossroads, killing those who tried to escape. You should not have captured the survivors and handed them over in their terrible time of trouble.
15 "The day is near when I, the LORD, will judge all godless nations! As you have done to Israel, so it will be done to you. All your evil deeds will fall back on your own heads.
16 Just as you swallowed up my people on my holy mountain, so you and the surrounding nations will swallow the punishment I pour out on you. Yes, all you nations will drink and stagger and disappear from history.
17 "But Jerusalem will become a refuge for those who escape; it will be a holy place. And the people of Israel will come back to reclaim their inheritance.
18 The people of Israel will be a raging fire, and Edom a field of dry stubble. The descendants of Joseph will be a flame roaring across the field, devouring everything. There will be no survivors in Edom. I, the LORD, have spoken!
19 "Then my people living in the Negev will occupy the mountains of Edom. Those living in the foothills of Judah will possess the Philistine plains and take over the fields of Ephraim and Samaria. And the people of Benjamin will occupy the land of Gilead.
20 The exiles of Israel will return to their land and occupy the Phoenician coast as far north as Zarephath. The captives from Jerusalem exiled in the north will return home and resettle the towns of the Negev.
21 Those who have been rescued will go up to Mount Zion in Jerusalem to rule over the mountains of Edom. And the LORD himself will be king!"

2 Behold H2009 IJEC , I have made H5414 thee small H6996 AMS among the heathen H1471 : thou H859 PPRO-2MS art greatly H3966 ADV despised H959 .
3 The pride H2087 of thine heart H3820 CMS-2MS hath deceived H5377 thee , thou that dwellest H7931 in the clefts H2288 of the rock H5553 , whose habitation H7675 is high H4791 ; that saith H559 in his heart H3820 , Who H4310 IPRO shall bring me down H3381 to the ground H776 GFS ?
4 Though H518 PART thou exalt H1361 thyself as the eagle H5404 , and though H518 PART thou set H7760 VQFC thy nest H7064 among H996 PREP the stars H3556 , thence H8033 M-ADV will I bring thee down H3381 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
5 If H518 PART thieves H1590 came H935 to thee , if H518 PART robbers H7703 by night H3915 GMS , ( how H349 art thou cut off H1820 ! ) would they not H3808 D-NPAR have stolen H1589 till they had enough H1767 ? if H518 PART the grape gatherers H1219 came H935 VQQ3MP to thee , would they not H3808 D-NPAR leave H7604 some grapes H5955 ?
6 How H349 are the things of Esau H6215 searched out H2664 ! how are his hidden things H4710 sought up H1158 !
7 All H3605 NMS the men H376 of thy confederacy H1285 CFS-2MS have brought H7971 thee even to H5704 the border H1366 : the men H376 that were at peace H7965 with thee have deceived H5377 thee , and prevailed H3201 against thee ; they that eat thy bread H3899 have laid H7760 VQY3MP a wound H4204 under H8478 thee : there is none H369 NPAR understanding H8394 NFS in him .
8 Shall I not H3808 D-NPAR in that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , even destroy H6 the wise H2450 AMP men out of Edom H123 , and understanding H8394 out of the mount H2022 of Esau H6215 ?
9 And thy mighty H1368 men , O Teman H8487 , shall be dismayed H2865 , to the end that H4616 L-CONJ every one H376 NMS of the mount H2022 of Esau H6215 may be cut off H3772 by slaughter H6993 .
10 For thy violence H2555 against thy brother H251 CMS-2MS Jacob H3290 shame H955 shall cover H3680 thee , and thou shalt be cut off H3772 forever H5769 .
11 In the day H3117 B-NMS that thou stoodest H5975 on the other side H5048 M-PREP , in the day H3117 B-NMS that the strangers H2114 carried away captive H7617 his forces H2428 CMS-3MS , and foreigners H5237 entered into H935 VQQ3MP his gates H8179 , and cast H3032 lots H1486 upon H5921 W-PREP Jerusalem H3389 , even H1571 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS wast as one H259 K-NMS of H4480 them .
12 But thou shouldest not H408 W-NPAR have looked H7200 on the day H3117 B-NMS of thy brother H251 CMS-2MS in the day H3117 B-NMS that he became a stranger H5237 ; neither H408 W-NPAR shouldest thou have rejoiced H8055 over the children H1121 of Judah H3063 in the day H3117 B-NMS of their destruction H6 ; neither H408 W-NPAR shouldest thou have spoken proudly H1431 in the day H3117 B-NMS of distress H6869 NFS .
13 Thou shouldest not H408 NPAR have entered H935 VQY2MS into the gate H8179 of my people H5971 in the day H3117 B-NMS of their calamity H343 NMS-3MP ; yea H1571 CONJ , thou H859 PPRO-2MS shouldest not H408 NPAR have looked H7200 on their affliction H7451 in the day H3117 B-NMS of their calamity H343 NMS-3MP , nor H408 ADV have laid H7971 hands on their substance H2428 in the day H3117 B-NMS of their calamity H343 NMS-3MP ;
14 Neither H408 W-NPAR shouldest thou have stood H5975 in H5921 PREP the crossway H6563 , to cut off H3772 those of his that did escape H6412 ; neither H408 W-NPAR shouldest thou have delivered up H5462 those of his that did remain H8300 in the day H3117 B-NMS of distress H6869 NFS .
15 For H3588 CONJ the day H3117 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS is near H7138 AMS upon H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the heathen H1471 D-NMP : as H834 K-RPRO thou hast done H6213 VQQ2MS , it shall be done H6213 unto thee : thy reward H1576 shall return H7725 VQY3MS upon thine own head H7218 .
16 For H3588 CONJ as H834 ye have drunk H8354 upon H5921 PREP my holy H6944 mountain H2022 CMS , so shall all H3605 the heathen H1471 D-NMP drink H8354 continually H8548 , yea , they shall drink H8354 , and they shall swallow down H3886 , and they shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS as though they had not H3808 been H1961 .
17 But upon mount H2022 Zion H6726 shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS deliverance H6413 , and there shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS holiness H6944 ; and the house H1004 CMS of Jacob H3290 shall possess H3423 their possessions H4180 .
18 And the house H1004 W-NMS of Jacob H3290 shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS a fire H784 CMS , and the house H1004 W-NMS of Joseph H3130 a flame H3852 , and the house H1004 W-NMS of Esau H6215 for stubble H7179 L-NMS , and they shall kindle H1814 in them , and devour H398 them ; and there shall not H3808 W-NPAR be H1961 W-VQQ3MS any remaining H8300 NMS of the house H1004 W-NMS of Esau H6215 ; for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath spoken H1696 it .
19 And they of the south H5045 D-NMS shall possess H3423 the mount H2022 CMS of Esau H6215 ; and they of the plain H8219 the Philistines H6430 TMS : and they shall possess H3423 the fields H7704 CMS of Ephraim H669 , and the fields H7704 CMS of Samaria H8111 : and Benjamin H1144 shall possess Gilead H1568 .
20 And the captivity H1546 of this H2088 D-PMS host H2426 of the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 shall possess that H834 RPRO of the Canaanites H3669 , even unto H5704 PREP Zarephath H6886 ; and the captivity H1546 of Jerusalem H3389 , which H834 RPRO is in Sepharad H5614 , shall possess H3423 the cities H5892 of the south H5045 .
21 And saviors H3467 shall come up H5927 on mount H2022 Zion H6726 to judge H8199 the mount H2022 CMS of Esau H6215 ; and the kingdom H4410 shall be H1961 W-VQQ3FS the LORD H3068 L-EDS \'s .
