The
king

this
order
to
Joab,
Abishai,

Ittai:
"For
my
sake
deal
gently
with
the
young
man
Absalom."
Now
the
entire
army
was
listening
when
the
king
gave
all
the
leaders
this
order
concerning
Absalom.

the
army
marched
out
to
the
field
to
fight
against
Israel.
The
battle
took
place
in
the
forest
of
Ephraim.

The
army
of
Israel
was
defeated
there
by
David's
men.
The
slaughter
there
was
great
that

The

was

out
over

whole

and

forest
consumed
more
soldiers

happened

oak

head
got

in

and

been

kept

hanging

an
oak
tree.

replied

the

"What!
You
saw
this?
Why
didn't
you
strike
him
down
right
on

spot?
I
would
have
given
you
ten
pieces
of
silver
and
a
commemorative
belt!"

man
replied

Joab,
"Even
if
I
were
receiving
a
thousand
pieces
of
silver,
I
would
not
strike
the
king's
son!
In
our
very
presence
the
king
gave
this
order
to
you
and
Abishai
and
Ittai,
'Protect
the
young
man
Absalom
for
my
sake.'

I

acted
at
risk
of
my
own

is
hidden

Joab
replied,
"I
will
not
wait
around
like
this
for
you!"
He
took
three
spears
in

hand

them

Absalom

middle

oak

soldiers
who
were
Joab's
armor
bearers
struck
Absalom
and
finished
him
off.

Then
Joab
blew

trumpet
and
the
army
turned
back
from
chasing
Israel,
for
Joab
had
called
for
the
army
to
halt.

They
took
Absalom,
threw
him
into
a
large
pit
in
the
forest,
and
stacked

huge
pile
of
stones
over
him.
In
the
meantime
all
the
Israelite
soldiers
fled
to
their
homes.

Prior
to
this
Absalom
had
set
up
a
monument
and
dedicated
it
to
himself
in
the
King's
Valley,
reasoning
"I
have
no
son
who
will
carry
on
my
name."
He
named
the
monument
after
himself,
and
to
this
day
it
is
known
as
Absalom's
Memorial.

Then
Ahimaaz
the
son
of
Zadok
said,
"Let
me
run
and
give
the
king
the
good
news
that
the
LORD
has
vindicated
him
before
his
enemies."
20
But
Joab
said
to
him,
"You
will
not
be
a
bearer
of
good
news
today.
You
will
bear
good
news
some
other
day,
but
not
today,
for
the
king's
son
is
dead."
21
Then
Joab
said
to
the
Cushite,
"Go
and
tell
the
king
what
you
have
seen."
After
bowing
to
Joab,
the
Cushite
ran
off.

Ahimaaz
the
son
of
Zadok
again
spoke
to
Joab,
"Whatever
happens,
let
me
go
after
the
Cushite."
But
Joab
said,
"Why
is
it
that
you
want
to
go,
my
son?
You
have
no
good
news
that
will
bring
you
a
reward."

But
he
said,
"Whatever
happens,
I
want
to
go!"
So
Joab
said
to
him,
"Then
go!"

ran
by
the
way
of

Jordan
plain,

he

the
Cushite.

Now
David
was
sitting

inner
and
outer
gates,
and
the
watchman
went

to
the
roof
over
the
gate
at

wall.
When
he
looked,
he
saw
a
man
running
by
himself.

So
the
watchman
called
out
and
informed
the
king.
The
king
said,
"If
he
is
by
himself,
he
brings
good
news."
The
runner
came
ever
closer.

watchman
saw
another
man
running.

watchman
called
out
to

gatekeeper,
"There
is
another
man

by
himself."

so

was

hanging

kill
him

to

man

Joab,
"I
would
not
try

hurt

son

gave
me

pieces

silver.
We
heard
the
king's
command

'Be
careful

hurt
young

alive

the
oak
tree.

his
hand
and
hit
him
in

heart.

Ten
of
Joab's
young
helpers
gathered
around
Absalom
and
killed
him.

Joab
blew
the
trumpet
and
called
the
people
to
stop
chasing
Israelites.

Then
Joab's
men
took
Absalom's
body
and
threw
it
into
a
large
hole
in
the
forest
and
covered
it
with
stones.
All
the
Israelites
ran
away
and
went
home.

While
Absalom
was
alive
he
put
up
a
memorial
stone
in
King's
Valley.
He
said,
"I
have
no
son
to
keep
my
name
alive."
So
he
named
that
monument
after
himself.
It
is
called
"Absalom's
Monument"
even
today.

of

said
to
Joab,
"May
I
run
and
take
the
news
to
King
David?
I'll
tell
him
the
Lord
has
destroyed
the
enemy
for
him."

Joab
answered
Ahimaaz,
"No,
you

not
carry
the
message
today.
You
can
do
it
some
other
time,
but
not
today
because
it
is
the
king's
son
who
is
dead."

Then
Joab
said
to
a
man
from
Ethiopia,
"Go,
tell
the
king
what
you
have
seen."
So
the
Ethiopian
bowed
to
Joab
and
ran
to
tell
David.
22
But
Ahimaaz
son
of
Zadok
begged
Joab
again,
"No
matter
what
happens,
please
let
me
also
run
after
the
Ethiopian!"
Joab
said,
"Son,
why
do
you
want
to
carry
the
news?
You
will
not
get
any
reward
for
the
news
you
bring."

Ahimaaz
answered,
"No
matter
what
happens,
I
will
run
to
David."
Joab
said
to
Ahimaaz,
"All
right,
run
to
David!"
Then
Ahimaaz
ran
through
Jordan
Valley
and
passed
the
Ethiopian.

David
was
sitting
between
the
two
gates
of
the
city.
The
watchman
went
up
to
the

the
gate
walls
and
saw
a
man
running
alone.

The
watchman
shouted
to
tell
King
David.
King
David
said,
"If
the
man
