39 And ^G2532 ^CONJ he commanded ^G2004 ^V-AAI-3S them ^G846 ^P-DPM to make all sit down ^G347 ^V-AAN by companies ^G4849 ^N-APN upon ^G1909 ^PREP the ^G3588 ^T-DSM green ^G5515 ^A-DSM grass ^G5528 ^N-DSM .

40 And ^G2532 ^CONJ they sat down ^G377 ^V-2AAI-3P in ranks ^G4237 ^N-NPF , by hundreds ^G1540 ^A-NUI , and ^G2532 ^CONJ by fifties ^G4004 ^A-NUI .

41 And ^G2532 ^CONJ when he had taken ^G2983 ^V-2AAP-NSM the ^G3588 ^T-APM five ^G4002 ^A-NUI loaves ^G740 ^N-APM and ^G2532 ^CONJ the ^G3588 ^T-APM two ^G1417 ^A-NUI fishes ^G2486 ^N-APM , he looked up ^G308 ^V-AAP-NSM to ^G1519 ^PREP heaven ^G3772 ^N-ASM , and blessed ^G2127 ^V-AAI-3S , and ^G2532 ^CONJ broke ^G2622 ^V-AAI-3S the ^G3588 ^T-APM loaves ^G740 ^N-APM , and ^G2532 ^CONJ gave ^G1325 ^V-IAI-3S them to his ^G3588 ^T-DPM disciples ^G3101 ^N-DPM to ^G2443 ^CONJ set before ^G3908 ^V-2AAS-3P them ^G846 ^P-GSM ; and ^G2532 ^CONJ the ^G3588 ^T-APM two ^G1417 ^A-NUI fishes ^G2486 ^N-APM divided ^G3307 ^V-AAI-3S he among them all ^G3956 ^A-DPM .

42 And ^G2532 ^CONJ they did all ^G3956 ^A-NPM eat ^G5315 ^V-2AAI-3P , and ^G2532 ^CONJ were filled ^G5526 ^V-API-3P .

43 And ^G2532 ^CONJ they took up ^G142 ^V-AAI-3P twelve ^G1427 ^A-NUI baskets ^G2894 ^N-APM full ^G4134 ^A-APM of the fragments ^G2801 ^N-GPN , and ^G2532 ^CONJ of ^G575 ^PREP the ^G3588 ^T-GPM fishes ^G2486 ^N-GPM .

44 And ^G2532 ^CONJ they that did eat ^G5315 ^V-2AAP-NPM of ^G3588 ^T-APM the ^G3588 ^T-APM loaves ^G740 ^N-APM were ^G2258 ^V-IXI-3P about ^G5616 five thousand ^G4000 ^A-NPM men ^G435 ^N-NPM .

45 And ^G2532 ^CONJ straightway ^G2112 ^ADV he constrained ^G315 ^V-AAI-3S his ^G3588 ^T-APM disciples ^G3101 ^N-APM to get ^G1684 ^V-2AAN into ^G1519 ^PREP the ^G3588 ^T-ASN ship ^G4143 ^N-ASN , and ^G2532 ^CONJ to go to the other side ^G4254 ^V-PAN before ^G4314 ^PREP unto Bethsaida ^G966 ^N-PRI , while ^G2193 ^CONJ he ^G846 ^P-GSM sent away ^G630 ^V-AAS-3S the ^G3588 ^T-ASM people ^G3793 ^N-ASM .

46 And ^G2532 ^CONJ when he had sent them away ^G657 ^V-AMP-NSM , he departed ^G565 ^V-2AAI-3S into ^G1519 ^PREP a mountain ^G3735 ^N-ASN to pray ^G4336 ^V-ADN .

47 And ^G2532 ^CONJ when even ^G3798 ^A-GSF was come ^G1096 ^V-2ADP-GSF , the ^G3588 ^T-NSN ship ^G4143 ^N-NSN was ^G2258 ^V-IXI-3S in ^G1722 ^PREP the midst ^G3319 ^A-DSN of ^G3588 ^T-GSF the ^G3588 ^T-GSF sea ^G2281 ^N-GSF , and ^G2532 ^CONJ he ^G846 ^P-NSM alone ^G3441 ^A-NSM on ^G1909 ^PREP the ^G3588 ^T-GSF land ^G1093 ^N-GSF .

52 For ^G1063 ^CONJ they considered ^G4920 ^V-AAI-3P not ^G3756 ^PRT-N the miracle of ^G1909 ^PREP the ^G3588 ^T-DPM loaves ^G740 ^N-DPM : for ^G1063 ^CONJ their ^G3588 ^T-NSF heart ^G2588 ^N-NSF was ^G2258 ^V-IXI-3S hardened ^G4456 ^V-RPP-NSF .

1 Jesus left and went back to his hometown. His followers went with him.

2 On the Sabbath day Jesus taught in the synagogue, and many people heard him. They were amazed and said, "Where did this man get this teaching? How did he get such wisdom? Who gave it to him? And where did he get the power to do miracles?

3 Isn't he just the carpenter we know—Mary's son, the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And don't his sisters still live here in town?" So they had a problem accepting him.

4 Then Jesus said to them, "People everywhere give honor to a prophet, except in his own town, with his own people, or in his home."

5 Jesus was not able to do any miracles there except the healing of some sick people by laying his hands on them.

6 He was surprised that the people there had no faith. Then he went to other villages in that area and taught.

7 Jesus called his twelve apostles together. He sent them out in groups of two and gave them power over evil spirits.

8 This is what he told them: "Take nothing for your trip except a stick for walking. Take no bread, no bag, and no money.

9 You can wear sandals, but don't take extra clothes.

10 When you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.

11 If any town refuses to accept you or refuses to listen to you, then leave that town and shake the dust off your feet as a warning to them."

12 The apostles left and went to other places. They talked to the people and told them to change their hearts and lives.

13 They forced many demons out of people and put olive oil on many who were sick and healed them.

14 King Herod heard about Jesus, because Jesus was now famous. Some people said, "He is John the Baptizer. He must have risen from death, and that is why he can do these miracles. "

15 Other people said, "He is Elijah. " And others said, "He is a prophet. He is like the prophets who lived long ago."

16 Herod heard these things about Jesus. He said, "I killed John by cutting off his head. Now he has been raised from death!"

17 Herod himself had ordered his soldiers to arrest John and put him in prison. Herod did this to please his wife Herodias. She had been married to Herod's brother Philip, but then Herod married her.

18 John told Herod, "It is not right for you to be married to your brother's wife."

19 So Herodias hated John. She wanted him dead, but she was not able to persuade Herod to kill him.

20 Herod was afraid to kill John, because he knew that he was a good and holy man. So he protected him. He liked listening to John, although what John said left him with so many questions.

21 Then the right time came for Herodias to cause John's death. It happened on Herod's birthday. Herod gave a dinner party for the most important government leaders, the commanders of his army, and the most important people in Galilee.

22 The daughter of Herodias came to the party and danced. When she danced, Herod and the people eating with him were very pleased. So King Herod said to the girl, "I will give you anything you want."

23 He promised her, "Anything you ask for I will give to you—even half of my kingdom."

24 The girl went to her mother and asked, "What should I ask King Herod to give me?" Her mother answered, "Ask for the head of John the Baptizer. "

25 So right then the girl went back in to the king. She said to him, "Please give me the head of John the Baptizer. Bring it to me now on a plate."

26 King Herod was very sad, but he didn't want to break the promise he had made to her in front of his guests.

27 So he sent a soldier to cut off John's head and bring it to him. The soldier went and cut off John's head in the prison.

28 He brought the head back on a plate and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

29 John's followers heard about what happened, so they came and got John's body and put it in a tomb.

30 The apostles Jesus sent out came back to him. They gathered around him and told him about all they had done and taught.

31 Jesus and his followers were in a very busy place. There were so many people that he and his followers did not even have time to eat. He said to them, "Come with me. We will go to a quiet place to be alone. There we will get some rest."

32 So Jesus and his followers went away alone. They went in a boat to a place where no one lived.

33 But many people saw them leave and knew who they were. So people from every town ran to the place where they were going and got there before Jesus.

34 As Jesus stepped out of the boat, he saw a large crowd waiting. He felt sorry for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd to care for them. So he taught the people many things.

35 It was now very late in the day. Jesus' followers came to him and said, "No one lives around here, and it is already very late.

36 So send the people away. They need to go to the farms and towns around here to buy some food to eat."

37 But Jesus answered, "You give them some food to eat." They said to Jesus, "We can't buy enough bread to feed all these people. We would all have to work a month to earn enough to buy that much bread!"

38 Jesus asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have now? Go and see." They counted their loaves of bread. They came to Jesus and said, "We have five loaves of bread and two fish."

39 Then Jesus said to them, "Tell everyone to sit in groups on the green grass."

40 So all the people sat in groups. There were about 50 or 100 people in each group.

41 Jesus took the five loaves and two fish. He looked up to the sky and thanked God for the food. Then he broke the bread into pieces, which he gave to his followers to distribute to the people. Then he divided the two fish among everyone there.

42 They all ate until they were full.

43 After they finished eating, the followers filled twelve baskets with the pieces of bread and fish that were left.

44 There were about 5000 men there who ate.

45 Then Jesus told the followers to get into the boat. He told them to go to the other side of the lake to Bethsaida. He said he would come later. He stayed there to tell everyone they could go home.

46 After he said goodbye to them, he went up into the hills to pray.

47 That night, the boat was still in the middle of the lake. Jesus was alone on the land.

48 He saw the boat far away on the lake. And he saw the followers working hard to row the boat. The wind was blowing against them. Sometime between three and six o'clock in the morning, Jesus went out to the boat, walking on the water. He continued walking until he was almost past the boat.

49 But the followers saw Jesus walking on the water. They thought he was a ghost, and they started screaming.

50 It scared them all to see him. But he spoke to them and said, "Don't worry! It's me! Don't be afraid."

51 When he got into the boat with the followers, the wind stopped. The followers were completely amazed.

52 They could not believe what happened. It was like the miracle he did with the bread. They still didn't understand what that meant.

53 Jesus and his followers went across the lake and came to shore at Gennesaret. They tied the boat there.

54 When they were out of the boat, the people there saw Jesus. They knew who he was,

55 so they ran to tell others throughout that area. They brought sick people on mats to every place Jesus went.

56 Jesus went into towns, cities, and farms around that area. And every place he went, the people brought sick people to the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch any part of his coat. And all those who touched him were healed.

1 Jesus went from the house of Jairus and came to His home town. His followers came after Him.

2 On the Day of Rest He began to teach in the Jewish place of worship. Many people heard Him. They were surprised and wondered, saying, "Where did this Man get all this? What wisdom is this that has been given to Him? How can He do these powerful works with His hands?

3 Is He not a Man Who makes things from wood? Is He not the Son of Mary and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Do not His sisters live here with us?" The people were ashamed of Him and turned away from Him.

4 Jesus said to them, "One who speaks for God is respected everywhere but in his own country and among his own family and in his own house."

5 So Jesus could do no powerful works there. But He did put His hands on a few sick people and healed them.

6 He wondered because they had no faith. But He went around to the towns and taught as He went.

7 Jesus called the twelve followers to Him and began to send them out two by two. He gave them power over demons.

8 He told them to take nothing along with them but a walking stick. They were not to take a bag or food or money in their belts.

9 They were to wear shoes. They were not to take two coats.

10 He said to them, "Whatever house you go into, stay there until you leave that town.

11 Whoever does not take you in or listen to you, when you leave there, shake the dust off your feet. By doing that, you will speak against them. For sure, I tell you, it will be easier for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day men stand before God and are judged than for that city."

12 Then they left. They preached that men should be sorry for their sins and turn from them.

13 They put out many demons. They poured oil on many people that were sick and healed them.

14 King Herod heard about Jesus because everyone was talking about Him. Some people said, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why he is doing such powerful works."

15 Other people said, "He is Elijah." Others said, "He is one who speaks for God like one of the early preachers."

16 When Herod heard this, he said, "It is John the Baptist, whose head I cut off. He has been raised from the dead."

17 For Herod had sent men to take John and put him into prison. He did this because of his wife, Herodias. She had been the wife of his brother Philip.

18 John the Baptist had said to Herod, "It is wrong for you to have your brother's wife."

19 Herodias became angry with him. She wanted to have John the Baptist killed but she could not.

20 Herod was afraid of John. He knew he was a good man and right with God, and he kept John from being hurt or killed. He liked to listen to John preach. But when he did, he became troubled.

21 Then Herodias found a way to have John killed. Herod gave a big supper on his birthday. He asked the leaders of the country and army captains and the leaders of Galilee to come.

22 The daughter of Herodias came in and danced before them. This made Herod and his friends happy. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you."

23 Then he made a promise to her, "Whatever you ask for, I will give it to you. I will give you even half of my nation."

24 She went to her mother and asked, "What should I ask for?" The mother answered, "I want the head of John the Baptist."

25 At once the girl went to Herod. She said, "I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a plate now."

26 Herod was very sorry. He had to do it because of his promise and because of those who ate with him.

27 At once he sent one of his soldiers and told him to bring the head of John the Baptist. The soldier went to the prison and cut off John's head.

28 He took John's head in on a plate and gave it to the girl. The girl gave it to her mother.

29 John's followers heard this. They went and took his body and buried it.

30 The followers of Jesus came back to Him. They told Jesus all they had done and taught.

31 He said to them, "Come away from the people. Be by yourselves and rest." There were many people coming and going. They had had no time even to eat.

32 They went by themselves in a boat to a desert.

33 Many people saw them leave and knew who they were. People ran fast from all the cities and got there first.

34 When Jesus got out of the boat, He saw many people gathered together. He had loving-pity for them. They were like sheep without a shepherd. He began to teach them many things.

35 The day was almost gone. The followers of Jesus came to Him. They said, "This is a desert. It is getting late.

36 Tell the people to go to the towns and villages and buy food for themselves."

37 He said to them, "Give them something to eat." They said to Him, "Are we to go and buy many loaves of bread and give it to them?"

38 He said to them, "How many loaves of bread do you have here? Go and see." When they knew, they said, "Five loaves of bread and two fish."

39 Then He told them to have all the people sit down together in groups on the green grass.

40 They sat down in groups of fifty people and in groups of one hundred people.

41 Jesus took the five loaves of bread and two fish. He looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He broke the loaves in pieces and gave them to the followers to set before the people. He divided the two fish among them all.

42 They all ate and were filled.

43 After that the followers picked up twelve baskets full of pieces of bread and fish.

44 About five thousand men ate the bread.

45 At once Jesus had His followers get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to the town of Bethsaida. He sent the people away.

46 When they were all gone, He went up to the mountain to pray.

47 It was evening.The boat was half-way across the sea. Jesus was alone on the land.

48 He saw His followers were in trouble. The wind was against them. They were working very hard rowing the boat. About three o'clock in the morning Jesus came to them walking on the sea. He would have gone past them.

49 When the followers saw Him walking on the water, they thought it was a spirit and cried out with fear.

50 For they all saw Him and were afraid. At once Jesus talked to them. He said, "Take hope. It is I, do not be afraid."

51 He came over to them and got into the boat. The wind stopped. They were very much surprised and wondered about it.

52 They had not learned what they should have learned from the loaves because their hearts were hard.

53 Then they crossed the sea and came to the land of Gennesaret and went to shore.

54 When Jesus got out of the boat, the people knew Him at once.

55 They ran through all the country bringing people who were sick on their beds to Jesus.

56 Wherever He went, they would lay the sick people in the streets in the center of town where people gather. They begged Him that they might touch the bottom of His coat. Everyone who did was healed. This happened in the towns and in the cities and in the country where He went.

16 When Herod heard this, he said, "I killed John by cutting off his head. Now he has risen from the dead!"

17 Herod himself had ordered his soldiers to arrest John and put him in prison in order to please his wife, Herodias. She had been the wife of Philip, Herod's brother, but then Herod had married her.

18 John had been telling Herod, "It is not lawful for you to be married to your brother's wife."

19 So Herodias hated John and wanted to kill him. But she couldn't,

20 because Herod was afraid of John and protected him. He knew John was a good and holy man. Also, though John's preaching always bothered him, he enjoyed listening to John.

21 Then the perfect time came for Herodias to cause John's death. On Herod's birthday, he gave a dinner party for the most important government leaders, the commanders of his army, and the most important people in Galilee.

22 When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and the people eating with him. So King Herod said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I will give it to you."

23 He promised her, "Anything you ask for I will give to you -- up to half of my kingdom."

24 The girl went to her mother and asked, "What should I ask for?" Her mother answered, "Ask for the head of John the Baptist."

25 At once the girl went back to the king and said to him, "I want the head of John the Baptist right now on a platter."

30 I searched for a man among them who would repair the wall and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land so that I might not destroy it, but I found no one.

1 He went away from there and came to His hometown, and His disciples followed Him.

2 When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. "Where did this man get these things?" they said. "What is this wisdom given to Him, and how are these miracles performed by His hands?

3 Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren't His sisters here with us?" So they were offended by Him.

4 Then Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household."

5 So He was not able to do any miracles there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.

6 And He was amazed at their unbelief. Now He was going around the villages in a circuit, teaching.

7 He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs and gave them authority over unclean spirits.

8 He instructed them to take nothing for the road except a walking stick: no bread, no traveling bag, no money in their belts.

9 They were to wear sandals, but not put on an extra shirt.

10 Then He said to them, "Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that place.

11 If any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, when you leave there, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."

12 So they went out and preached that people should repent.

13 And they were driving out many demons, anointing many sick people with oil, and healing.

14 King Herod heard of this, because Jesus' name had become well known. Some said, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that's why supernatural powers are at work in him."

15 But others said, "He's Elijah." Still others said, "He's a prophet-- like one of the prophets."

16 When Herod heard of it, he said, "John, the one I beheaded, has been raised!"

17 For Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married.

18 John had been telling Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife!"

19 So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not,

20 because Herod was in awe of John and was protecting him, knowing he was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him he would be very disturbed, yet would hear him gladly.

21 Now an opportune time came on his birthday, when Herod gave a banquet for his nobles, military commanders, and the leading men of Galilee.

22 When Herodias' own daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me whatever you want, and I'll give it to you."

23 So he swore oaths to her: "Whatever you ask me I will give you, up to half my kingdom."

24 Then she went out and said to her mother, "What should I ask for?" "John the Baptist's head!" she said.

25 Immediately she hurried to the king and said, "I want you to give me John the Baptist's head on a platter-- right now!"

26 Though the king was deeply distressed, because of his oaths and the guests he did not want to refuse her.

27 The king immediately sent for an executioner and commanded him to bring John's head. So he went and beheaded him in prison,

28 brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother.

29 When his disciples heard about it, they came and removed his corpse and placed it in a tomb.

30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to Him all that they had done and taught.

31 He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest a while." For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.

32 So they went away in the boat by themselves to a remote place,

33 but many saw them leaving and recognized them. People ran there by land from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.

34 So as He stepped ashore, He saw a huge crowd and had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then He began to teach them many things.

35 When it was already late, His disciples approached Him and said, "This place is a wilderness, and it is already late!

36 Send them away, so they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages to buy themselves something to eat."

37 "You give them something to eat," He responded. They said to Him, "Should we go and buy 200 denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?"

38 And He asked them, "How many loaves do you have? Go look." When they found out they said, "Five, and two fish."

39 Then He instructed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.

40 So they sat down in ranks of hundreds and fifties.

41 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves. He kept giving them to His disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.

42 Everyone ate and was filled.

43 Then they picked up 12 baskets full of pieces of bread and fish.

44 Now those who ate the loaves were 5,000 men.

45 Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd.

46 After He said good-bye to them, He went away to the mountain to pray.

47 When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land.

48 He saw them being battered as they rowed, because the wind was against them. Around three in the morning He came toward them walking on the sea and wanted to pass by them.

49 When they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out;

50 for they all saw Him and were terrified. Immediately He spoke with them and said, "Have courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

51 Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were completely astounded,

52 because they had not understood about the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened.

53 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and beached the boat.

54 As they got out of the boat, people immediately recognized Him.

55 They hurried throughout that vicinity and began to carry the sick on stretchers to wherever they heard He was.

56 Wherever He would go, into villages, towns, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged Him that they might touch just the tassel of His robe. And everyone who touched it was made well.
