Matthew 20 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 "God's kingdom is like a man who owned some land. One morning, the man went out very early to hire some people to work in his vineyard.
2 He agreed to pay the workers one silver coin for working that day. Then he sent them into the vineyard to work.
3 "About nine o'clock the man went to the marketplace and saw some other people standing there. They were doing nothing.
4 So he said to them, 'If you go and work in my field, I will pay you what your work is worth.'
5 So they went to work in the vineyard. "The man went out again about twelve o'clock and again at three o'clock. Both times he hired some others to work in his vineyard.
6 About five o'clock the man went to the marketplace again. He saw some other people standing there. He asked them, 'Why did you stand here all day doing nothing?'
7 "They said, 'No one gave us a job.' "The man said to them, 'Then you can go and work in my vineyard.'
8 "At the end of the day, the owner of the field said to the boss of all the workers, 'Call the workers and pay them all. Start by paying the last people I hired. Then pay all of them, ending with the ones I hired first.'
9 "The workers who were hired at five o'clock came to get their pay. Each worker got one silver coin.
10 Then the workers who were hired first came to get their pay. They thought they would be paid more than the others. But each one of them also received one silver coin.
11 When they got their silver coin, they complained to the man who owned the land.
12 They said, 'Those people were hired last and worked only one hour. But you paid them the same as us. And we worked hard all day in the hot sun.'
13 "But the man who owned the field said to one of them, 'Friend, I am being fair with you. You agreed to work for one silver coin. Right?
14 So take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same pay I gave you.
15 I can do what I want with my own money. Why would you be jealous because I am generous?'
16 "So those who have the last place now will have the first place in the future. And those who have the first place now will have the last place in the future."
17 Jesus was going to Jerusalem. His twelve followers were with him. While they were walking, he gathered the followers together and spoke to them privately. He said to them,
18 "We are going to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the leading priests and the teachers of the law, and they will say he must die.
19 They will hand him over to the foreigners, who will laugh at him and beat him with whips, and then they will kill him on a cross. But on the third day after his death, he will be raised to life again."
20 Then Zebedee's wife came to Jesus and brought her sons. She bowed before Jesus and asked him to do something for her.
21 Jesus said, "What do you want?" She said, "Promise that one of my sons will sit at your right side in your kingdom and the other at your left."
22 So Jesus said to the sons, "You don't understand what you are asking. Can you drink from the cup that I must drink from?" The sons answered, "Yes, we can!"
23 Jesus said to them, "It is true that you will drink from the cup that I drink from. But it is not for me to say who will sit at my right or my left. My Father has decided who will do that. He has prepared those places for them."
24 The other ten followers heard this and were angry with the two brothers.
25 So Jesus called the followers together. He said, "You know that the rulers of the non- Jewish people love to show their power over the people. And their important leaders love to use all their authority over the people.
26 But it should not be that way with you. Whoever wants to be your leader must be your servant.
27 Whoever wants to be first must serve the rest of you like a slave.
28 Do as I did: The Son of Man did not come for people to serve him. He came to serve others and to give his life to save many people."
29 When Jesus and his followers were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.
30 There were two blind men sitting by the road. They heard that Jesus was coming by. So they shouted, "Lord, Son of David, please help us!"
31 The people there criticized the blind men and told them to be quiet. But they shouted more and more, "Lord, Son of David, please help us!"
32 Jesus stopped and said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?"
33 They answered, "Lord, we want to be able to see."
34 Jesus felt sorry for the blind men. He touched their eyes, and immediately they were able to see. Then they became followers of Jesus.

3 And G2532 CONJ he went out G1831 V-2AAP-NSM about G4012 PREP the G3588 T-DSF third G5154 A-ASF hour G5610 N-ASF , and saw G1492 V-2AAI-3S others G243 A-APM standing G2476 V-RAP-APM idle G692 A-APM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF marketplace G58 N-DSF ,
4 And said unto them G2548 ; Go G5217 V-PAM-2P ye G5210 P-2NP also G2532 CONJ into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASM vineyard G290 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ whatsoever G3739 R-ASN is G5600 right G1342 A-ASN I will give G1325 V-FAI-1S you G5213 P-2DP . And G1161 they G3588 T-ASM went their way G565 .
5 Again G3825 ADV he went out G1831 V-2AAP-NSM about G4012 PREP the sixth G1623 A-ASF and G2532 CONJ ninth G1766 A-ASF hour G5610 N-ASF , and did G4160 V-AAI-3S likewise G5615 ADV .
6 And G1161 CONJ about G4012 PREP the G3588 T-ASF eleventh G1734 A-ASF hour G5610 N-ASF he went out G1831 V-2AAP-NSM , and found G2147 V-2AAI-3S others G243 A-APM standing G2476 V-RAP-APM idle G692 A-APM , and G2532 CONJ saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Why G5101 I-ASN stand G2476 V-RAI-2P ye here G5602 ADV all G3650 A-ASF the G3588 T-ASF day G2250 N-ASF idle G692 A-NPM ?
7 They say G3004 V-PAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , Because G3754 CONJ no man G3762 A-NSM hath hired G3409 V-AMI-3S us G2248 P-1AP . He saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Go G5217 V-PAM-2P ye G5210 P-2NP also G2532 CONJ into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASM vineyard G290 N-ASM ; and G2532 CONJ whatsoever G3739 R-ASN is G5600 V-PXS-3S right G1342 A-ASN , that shall ye receive G2983 V-FDI-2P .
8 So G1161 CONJ when even G3798 A-GSF was come G1096 V-2ADP-GSF , the G3588 T-NSM lord G2962 N-NSM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM vineyard G290 N-GSM saith unto his G3588 T-DSM steward G2012 N-DSM , Call G2564 V-AAM-2S the G3588 T-APM laborers G2040 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ give G591 V-2AAM-2S them G3588 T-ASM their hire G3408 N-ASM , beginning G756 V-AMP-NSM from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GPM last G2078 A-GPM unto G2193 CONJ the G3588 T-GPM first G4413 A-GPM .

10 But G1161 CONJ when the G3588 T-NPM first G4413 A-NPM came G2064 V-2AAP-NPM , they supposed G3543 V-AAI-3P that G3754 CONJ they should have received G2983 V-FDI-3P more G4119 A-APN-C ; and G2532 CONJ they G846 P-NPM likewise G2532 CONJ received G2983 V-2AAI-3P every man G303 PREP a penny G1220 N-ASN .
11 And G1161 CONJ when they had received G2983 V-2AAP-NPM it , they murmured G1111 V-IAI-3P against G2596 PREP the G3588 T-GSM goodman of the house G3617 N-GSM ,
12 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , These G3588 T-NPM last G2078 A-NPM have wrought G4160 V-AAI-3P but one G3391 hour G5610 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ thou hast made G4160 V-AAI-2S them G846 P-APM equal G2470 A-APM unto us G2254 P-1DP , which have borne G941 V-AAP-DPM the G3588 T-ASN burden G922 N-ASN and G2532 CONJ heat G2742 N-ASM of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF day G2250 N-GSF .

14 Take G142 V-AAM-2S that thine G4674 S-2ASN is , and G2532 CONJ go thy way G5217 V-PAM-2S : I G1161 CONJ will G2309 V-PAI-1S give G1325 V-2AAN unto this G3588 T-DSM last G2078 A-DSM , even G2532 CONJ as G5613 ADV unto thee G4671 P-2DS .
15 Is it not lawful G1832 V-PQI-3S for me G3427 P-1DS to do G4160 V-AAN what G3739 R-ASN I will G2309 V-PAI-1S with G1722 PREP mine own G1699 S-1DPN ? Is G2076 V-PXI-3S thine G3588 T-NSM eye G3788 N-NSM evil G4190 A-NSM , because G3754 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS am G1510 V-PXI-1S good G18 A-NSM ?
16 So G3779 ADV the G3588 T-NPM last G2078 A-NPM shall be G2071 V-FXI-3P first G4413 A-NPM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM first G4413 A-NPM last G2078 A-NPM : for G1063 CONJ many G4183 A-NPM be G1526 V-PXI-3P called G2822 A-NPM , but G1161 CONJ few G3641 A-NPM chosen G1588 A-NPM .
17 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM going up G305 V-PAP-NSM to G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-ASF took G3880 V-2AAI-3S the G3588 T-APM twelve G1427 A-NUI disciples G3101 N-APM apart G2596 PREP in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF way G3598 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM ,
18 Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , we go up G305 V-PAI-1P to G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-ASF : and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of man G444 N-GSM shall be betrayed G3860 V-FPI-3S unto the G3588 T-DPM chief priests G749 N-DPM and G2532 CONJ unto the scribes G1122 N-DPM , and G2532 CONJ they shall condemn G2632 V-FAI-3P him G846 P-ASM to death G2288 N-DSM ,
19 And G2532 CONJ shall deliver G3860 V-FAI-3P him G846 P-ASM to the G3588 T-DPN Gentiles G1484 N-DPN to mock G1702 V-AAN , and G2532 CONJ to scourge G3146 V-AAN , and G2532 CONJ to crucify G4717 V-AAN him : and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-DSF third G5154 A-DSF day G2250 N-DSF he shall rise again G450 V-FMI-3S .
20 Then G5119 ADV came G4334 V-2AAI-3S to him G846 P-DSM the G3588 T-NSF mother G3384 N-NSF of G3588 T-GPM Zebedee G2199 N-GSM \'s children G5207 N-GPM with G3326 PREP her G3588 T-GPM sons G5207 N-GPM , worshiping G4352 V-PAP-NSF him , and G2532 CONJ desiring G154 V-PAP-NSF a certain thing G5100 X-ASN of G3844 PREP him G846 P-GSF .
21 And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto her G846 P-DSF , What G5101 I-ASN wilt G2309 V-PAI-2S thou ? She saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Grant G2036 V-2AAM-2S that G2443 CONJ these G3778 D-NPM my G3588 T-NPM two G1417 A-NUI sons G5207 N-NPM may sit G2523 V-AAS-3P , the one G1520 A-NSM on G1537 PREP thy G4675 P-2GS right hand G1188 A-GPM , and G2532 CONJ the other G1520 A-NSM on G1537 PREP the left G2176 A-GPM , in G1722 PREP thy G3588 T-DSF kingdom G932 N-DSF .

27 And G2532 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM will G2309 V-PAS-3S be G1511 V-PXN chief G4413 A-NSM among G1722 PREP you G5213 P-2DP , let him be G2077 V-PXM-3S your G5216 P-2GP servant G1401 N-NSM :
28 Even as G5618 ADV the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of man G444 N-GSM came G2064 V-2AAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N to be ministered unto G1247 V-APN , but G235 CONJ to minister G1247 V-AAN , and G2532 CONJ to give G1325 V-2AAN his G3588 T-ASF life G5590 N-ASF a ransom G3083 N-ASN for G473 PREP many G4183 A-GPM .
29 And G2532 CONJ as they G846 P-GPM departed G1607 V-PNP-GPM from G575 PREP Jericho G2410 N-PRI , a great G4183 A-NSM multitude G3793 N-NSM followed G190 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-DSM .
30 And G2532 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , two G1417 A-NUI blind men G5185 A-NPM sitting G2521 V-PNP-NPM by G3844 PREP the G3588 T-ASF way side G3598 N-ASF , when they heard G191 V-AAP-NPM that G3754 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM passed by G3855 V-PAI-3S , cried out G2896 V-AAI-3P , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Have mercy G1653 V-AAM-2S on us G2248 P-1AP , O Lord G2962 N-VSM , thou son G5207 N-NSM of David G1138 N-PRI .
31 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM multitude G3793 N-NSM rebuked G2008 V-AAI-3S them G846 P-DPM , because G2443 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM should hold their G3588 T-NPM peace G4623 V-AAS-3P : but G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM cried G2896 V-IAI-3P the more G3185 ADV , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Have mercy G1653 V-AAM-2S on us G2248 P-1AP , O Lord G2962 N-VSM , thou son G5207 N-NSM of David G1138 N-PRI .
32 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM stood still G2476 V-2AAP-NSM , and called G5455 V-AAI-3S them G846 P-APM , and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , What G5101 I-ASN will G2309 V-PAI-2P ye that I shall do G4160 V-AAS-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP ?
33 They say G3004 V-PAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , that G2443 CONJ our G3588 T-NPM eyes G3788 N-NPM may be opened G455 V-APS-3P .
34 So G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM had compassion G4697 V-AOP-NSM on them , and touched G680 V-ADI-3S their G3588 T-GPM eyes G3788 N-GPM : and G2532 CONJ immediately G2112 ADV their G3588 T-NPM eyes G3788 N-NPM received sight G308 V-AAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ they followed G190 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-DSM .
