Deuteronomy 22 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 "If you see that your neighbor's ox or sheep is loose, you must not ignore it. Be sure to take it back to its owner.
2 If the owner does not live near you or if you don't know who it belongs to, take the ox or sheep to your house. Keep it there until the owner comes looking for it; then give it back.
3 You must do the same thing when you find anything that your neighbor might have lost. Don't try selling it to your neighbor—you must give it back.
4 "If your neighbor's donkey or ox has fallen down on the road, you must not ignore it. You must help your neighbor lift it up again.
5 "A woman must not wear men's clothes, and a man must not wear women's clothes. That is very disgusting to the Lord your God.
6 "You might be walking along a path and find a bird's nest in a tree or on the ground. If the mother bird is sitting with her baby birds or on the eggs, you must not take the mother bird with the babies.
7 You may take the babies for yourself, but you must let the mother go. If you obey these laws, things will go well for you, and you will live a long time.
8 "When you build a new house, you must build a wall around your roof. Then you will not be guilty for the death of a person who falls from the house.
9 "You must not plant seeds of grain in the same fields as your grapevines. Why? Because then they become useless —both the grapes and the grain produced by the seeds you planted.
10 "You must not plow with a ox and a donkey together.
11 "You must not wear cloth made by weaving together wool and linen.
12 "Tie several pieces of thread together. Then put these tassels on the four corners of the robes you wear.
13 "A man might marry a woman and have sexual relations with her. Then he might decide that he does not like her.
14 He might accuse her of doing wrong and say, 'I married this woman, but when we had sexual relations, I found she was not a virgin. ' By saying this against her, people might think bad things about her.
15 If this happens, the girl's father and mother must bring the proof that the girl was a virgin to the town elders at the meeting place of the town.
16 The girl's father must say to the leaders, 'I gave my daughter to this man to be his wife, but now he does not want her.
17 This man accused my daughter of doing wrong and said, "I did not find the proof that your daughter is a virgin." But here is the proof that my daughter was a virgin.' Then they should show the cloth to the town leaders.
18 Then the leaders of that town must take that man and punish him.
19 They must fine him 40 ounces of silver. They will give the money to the girl's father because her husband brought shame to an Israelite girl. And the girl will continue to be the man's wife. He cannot divorce her for the rest of his life.
20 "But what the husband said about his wife might be true. The wife's parents might not have the proof that she was a virgin. If this happens,
21 then the town leaders must bring the girl to the door of her father's house. Then the men of the town must kill her with stones, because she has done a shameful thing in Israel. She has acted like a prostitute in her father's house. You must remove this evil from your group.
22 "If a man is found having sexual relations with another man's wife, both of them must die—the woman and the man who had sexual relations with her. You must remove this evil from Israel.
23 "A man might meet a virgin girl engaged to another man. He might have sexual relations with her. If this happens in the city,
24 you must bring them both out to the public place near the gate of that city, and you must kill them with stones. You must kill the man, because he used another man's wife for sexual sin. And you must kill the girl, because she was in the city but did not call for help. You must remove this evil from your people.
25 "But if a man finds an engaged girl out in the field and forces her to have sexual relations with him, only the man must die.
26 You must do nothing to the girl. She did nothing that deserves the punishment of death. This is like someone attacking their neighbor and killing them.
27 The man found the engaged girl out in the field and attacked her. Maybe she called for help, but there was no one to help her.
28 "A man might find a virgin girl who is not engaged and force her to have sexual relations with him. If other people see this happen,
29 he must pay the girl's father 20 ounces of silver. And the girl will become the man's wife, because he used her for sexual sin. He cannot divorce her all his life.
30 "A man must not bring shame to his father by marrying his father's wife.

2 And if H518 W-PART thy brother H251 CMS-2MS be not H3808 NADV nigh H7138 AMS unto H413 PREP thee , or if thou know H3045 him not H3808 W-NADV , then thou shalt bring H622 it unto H413 PREP thine own house H1004 , and it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS with H5973 PREP-2MS thee until H5704 PREP thy brother H251 CMS-2MS seek after H1875 it , and thou shalt restore H7725 it to him again .
3 In like manner H3651 shalt thou do H6213 VQY2MS with his ass H2543 ; and so H3651 shalt thou do H6213 VQY2MS with his raiment H8071 ; and with all H3605 L-CMS lost thing H9 of thy brother H251 CMS-2MS \'s , which H834 RPRO he hath lost H6 , and thou hast found H4672 , shalt thou do H6213 VQY2MS likewise H3651 : thou mayest H3201 not H3808 NADV hide thyself H5956 .
4 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV see H7200 VQY2MS thy brother H251 CMS-2MS \'s ass H2543 CMS or H176 CONJ his ox H7794 CMS-3MS fall down H5307 by the way H1870 , and hide thyself H5956 from H4480 them : thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again H6965 .
5 The woman H802 NFS shall not H3808 NADV wear H1961 VQY3MS that which pertaineth H3627 unto a man H1397 NMS , neither H3808 W-NADV shall a man H1397 NMS put on H3847 a woman H802 NFS \'s garment H8071 : for H3588 CONJ all H3605 NMS that do H6213 so H428 DPRO are abomination H8441 unto the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS .
6 If H3588 CONJ a bird H6833 CMS \'s nest H7064 chance to be H7122 before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee in the way H1870 in any H3605 B-CMS tree H6086 NMS , or H176 CONJ on H5921 PREP the ground H776 D-GFS , whether they be young ones H667 , or H176 CONJ eggs H1000 , and the dam H517 sitting H7257 upon H5921 PREP the young H667 , or H176 CONJ upon H5921 PREP the eggs H1000 , thou shalt not H3808 NADV take H3947 the dam H517 with H5921 PREP the young H1121 :
7 But thou shalt in any wise H7971 let the dam H517 go H7971 , and take H3947 the young H1121 to thee ; that H4616 L-CONJ it may be well H3190 with thee , and that thou mayest prolong H748 thy days H3117 NMP .
8 When H3588 CONJ thou buildest H1129 a new H2319 house H1004 NMS , then thou shalt make H6213 a battlement H4624 for thy roof H1406 , that thou bring H7760 VQY2MS not H3808 W-NPAR blood H1818 upon thine house H1004 , if H3588 CONJ any man H5307 VQY3MS fall H5307 from H4480 M-PREP-3MS thence .
9 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV sow H2232 thy vineyard H3754 with divers seeds H3610 : lest H6435 CONJ the fruit H4395 of thy seed H2233 which H834 RPRO thou hast sown H2232 , and the fruit H8393 of thy vineyard H3754 , be defiled H6942 .
10 Thou shalt not H3808 ADV plow H2790 with an ox H7794 and an ass H2543 together H3162 ADV .
11 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV wear H3847 a garment of divers sorts H8162 , as of woolen H6785 and linen H6593 together H3162 ADV .
12 Thou shalt make H6213 VQY2MS thee fringes H1434 upon H5921 PREP the four H702 MFS quarters H3671 CFP of thy vesture H3682 , wherewith H834 RPRO thou coverest H3680 VPY3FS thyself .
13 If H3588 CONJ any man H376 NMS take H3947 a wife H802 NFS , and go in H935 unto H413 PREP-3FS her , and hate H8130 her ,
14 And give H7760 occasions H5949 of speech H1697 NMP against her , and bring up H3318 an evil H7451 AMS name H8034 CMS upon H5921 PREP-3FS her , and say H559 , I took H3947 this H2063 D-DFS woman H802 D-NFS , and when I came H7126 to H413 PREP-3FS her , I found H4672 VQQ1MS her not H3808 W-NPAR a maid H1331 :
15 Then shall the father H1 CMS-1MS of the damsel H5291 , and her mother H517 , take H3947 W-VQQ3MS and bring forth the tokens of the damsel H5291 \'s virginity H1331 unto H413 PREP the elders H2205 of the city H5892 D-GFS in the gate H8179 :
16 And the damsel H5291 \'s father H1 CMS-1MS shall say H559 unto H413 PREP the elders H2205 , I gave H5414 VQQ1MS my daughter H1323 unto this H2088 D-PMS man H376 LD-NMS to wife H802 L-NFS , and he hateth H8130 her ;
17 And , lo H2009 IJEC , he H1931 PPRO-3MS hath given H7760 VQQ3MS occasions H5949 of speech H1697 NMP against her , saying H559 L-VQFC , I found H4672 VQQ1MS not H3808 ADV thy daughter H1323 a maid H1331 ; and yet these H428 W-PMP are the tokens of my daughter H1323 \'s virginity H1331 . And they shall spread H6566 the cloth H8071 D-NFS before H6440 L-CMP the elders H2205 of the city H5892 D-GFS .
18 And the elders H2205 of that H1931 D-PPRO-3FS city H5892 shall take H3947 that man H376 D-NMS and chastise H3256 him ;
19 And they shall amerce H6064 him in a hundred H3967 MFS shekels of silver H3701 , and give H5414 them unto the father H1 of the damsel H5291 , because H3588 CONJ he hath brought up H3318 VHQ3MS an evil H7451 AMS name H8034 CMS upon H5921 PREP a virgin H1330 of Israel H3478 : and she shall be H1961 his wife H802 L-NFS ; he may H3201 VQY3MS not H3808 NADV put her away H7971 all H3605 NMS his days H3117 CMP-3MS .
20 But if H518 W-PART this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS be H1961 VQQ3MS true H571 CFS , and the tokens of virginity H1331 be not H3808 NADV found H4672 for the damsel H5291 :
21 Then they shall bring out H3318 the damsel H5291 to H413 PREP the door H6607 CMS of her father H1 \'s house H1004 CMS , and the men H376 CMP of her city H5892 shall stone H5619 her with stones H68 that she die H4191 : because H3588 CONJ she hath wrought H6213 VQQ3MS folly H5039 NFS in Israel H3478 , to play the whore H2181 in her father H1 \'s house H1004 CMS : so shalt thou put evil away H1197 from among H7130 you .
22 If H3588 CONJ a man H376 NMS be found H4672 lying H7901 with H5973 PREP a woman H802 NFS married H1166 to a husband H1167 CMS , then they shall both H1571 CONJ of them die H4191 , both the man H376 D-NMS that lay H7901 with H5973 PREP the woman H802 D-NFS , and the woman H802 : so shalt thou put away H1197 evil H7451 D-AMS from Israel H3478 .
23 If H3588 CONJ a damsel H5291 that is a virgin H1330 be H1961 VQY3MS betrothed H781 unto a husband H376 NMS , and a man H376 NMS find H4672 her in the city H5892 BD-NFS , and lie H7901 with H5973 her ;
24 Then ye shall bring them both out H3318 unto H413 PREP the gate H8179 NMS of that H1931 D-PPRO-3FS city H5892 D-GFS , and ye shall stone H5619 them with stones H68 that they die H4191 ; the damsel H5291 , because H5921 PREP she cried H6817 not H3808 NADV , being in the city H5892 BD-NFS ; and the man H376 D-NMS , because H5921 PREP he hath humbled H6031 his neighbor H7453 NMS-3MS \'s wife H802 CFS : so thou shalt put away H1197 evil H7451 D-AMS from among H7130 you .
25 But if H518 a man H376 D-NMS find H4672 VQY3MS a betrothed H781 damsel H5291 in the field H7704 B-NMS , and the man H376 D-NMS force H2388 her , and lie H7901 with H5973 PREP-3FS her : then the man H376 D-NMS only H905 that H834 RPRO lay H7901 VQQ3MS with H5973 PREP-3FS her shall die H4191 :
26 But unto the damsel H5291 thou shalt do H6213 nothing H3808 NADV ; there is in the damsel H5291 no H369 NPAR sin H2399 worthy of death H4194 NMS : for H3588 CONJ as H834 K-RPRO when a man H376 NMS riseth H6965 VQY3MS against H5921 PREP his neighbor H7453 NMS-3MS , and slayeth H7523 him , even so H3651 ADV is this H2088 D-PMS matter H1697 NMS :
27 For H3588 CONJ he found H4672 her in the field H7704 , and the betrothed H781 damsel H5291 cried H6817 , and there was none H369 W-NPAR to save H3467 her .
28 If H3588 CONJ a man H376 NMS find H4672 VQY3MS a damsel H5291 that is a virgin H1330 , which H834 RPRO is not H3808 NADV betrothed H781 , and lay hold H8610 on her , and lie H7901 with H5973 PREP-3FS her , and they be found H4672 ;
29 Then the man H376 D-NMS that lay H7901 with H5973 PREP-3FS her shall give H5414 W-VQQ3MS unto the damsel H5291 \'s father H1 fifty H2572 MMP shekels of silver H3701 NMS , and she shall be H1961 his wife H802 L-NFS ; because H834 RPRO he hath humbled H6031 her , he may H3201 VQY3MS not H3808 NADV put her away H7971 all H3605 NMS his days H3117 CMP-3MS .
30 A man H376 NMS shall not H3808 NADV take H3947 his father H1 CMS-3MS \'s wife H802 CFS , nor H3808 W-NADV discover H1540 his father H1 \'s skirt H3671 CFS .
