Exodus 20 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 Then God said,
2 "I am the Lord your God. I led you out of the land of Egypt where you were slaves. These are the commands I give you:
3 "You must not worship any other gods except me.
4 "You must not make any idols. Don't make any statues or pictures of anything up in the sky or of anything on the earth or of anything down in the water.
5 Don't worship or serve idols of any kind, because I, the Lord, am your God. I hate my people worshiping other gods. People who sin against me become my enemies, and I will punish them. And I will punish their children, their grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren.
6 But I will be very kind to people who love me and obey my commands. I will be kind to their families for thousands of generations.
7 "You must not use the name of the Lord your God to make empty promises. If you do, the Lord will not let you go unpunished.
8 "You must remember to keep the Sabbath a special day.
9 You may work six days a week to do your job.
10 But the seventh day is a day of rest in honor of the Lord your God. So on that day no one should work�not you, your sons and daughters, or your men and women slaves. Even your animals and the foreigners living in your cities must not work!
11 That is because the Lord worked six days and made the sky, the earth, the sea, and everything in them. And on the seventh day, he rested. In this way the Lord blessed the Sabbath�the day of rest. He made that a very special day.
12 "You must honor and respect your father and your mother. Do this so that you will have a full life in the land that the Lord your God gives you.
13 "You must not murder anyone.
14 "You must not commit adultery.
15 "You must not steal anything.
16 "You must not tell lies about other people.
17 "You must not want to take your neighbor's house. You must not want his wife. And you must not want his men and women servants or his cattle or donkeys. You must not want to take anything that belongs to another person."
18 During all this time, the people in the valley heard the thundering and saw the lightning on the mountain. They saw smoke rising from the mountain and heard the sound of the trumpet. They were afraid and shook with fear. They stood away from the mountain and watched.
19 Then the people said to Moses, "If you want to speak to us, then we will listen. But please don't let God speak to us. If this happens, we will die."
20 Then Moses said to them, "Don't be afraid! God has come to test you. He wants you to respect him so that you will not sin."
21 The people stood far away from the mountain while Moses went to the dark cloud where God was.
22 Then the Lord told Moses to say this to the Israelites: "You people have seen that I talked with you from heaven.
23 So you must not make idols using gold or silver to compete with me. You must not make these false gods.
24 "Make a special altar for me. You should use dirt to make this altar. Offer sheep and cattle as burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on this altar. Do this in every place where I tell you to remember me. Then I will come and bless you.
25 But if you use stones to make an altar, then don't use stones that were cut with an iron tool. If you do that, it will make the altar unacceptable.
26 And you must not make steps leading up to the altar. If there are steps, when people look up to the altar, they will be able to see under your clothes."

5 Thou shalt not H3808 bow down thyself H7812 to them, nor H3808 serve H5647 them: for H3588 I H595 the LORD H3068 thy God H430 am a jealous H7067 God, H410 visiting H6485 the iniquity H5771 of the fathers H1 upon H5921 the children H1121 unto H5921 the third H8029 and fourth H7256 generation of them that hate H8130 me;
6 And showing H6213 mercy H2617 unto thousands H505 of them that love H157 me , and keep H8104 my commandments. H4687
7 Thou shalt not H3808 take H5375 H853 the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 thy God H430 in vain; H7723 for H3588 the LORD H3068 will not H3808 hold him guiltless H5352 H853 that H834 taketh H5375 H853 his name H8034 in vain. H7723

9 Six H8337 days H3117 shalt thou labor, H5647 and do H6213 all H3605 thy work: H4399
10 But the seventh H7637 day H3117 is the sabbath H7676 of the LORD H3068 thy God: H430 in it thou shalt not H3808 do H6213 any H3605 work, H4399 thou, H859 nor thy son, H1121 nor thy daughter, H1323 thy manservant, H5650 nor thy maidservant, H519 nor thy cattle, H929 nor thy stranger H1616 that H834 is within thy gates: H8179
11 For H3588 in six H8337 days H3117 the LORD H3068 made H6213 H853 heaven H8064 and earth, H776 H853 the sea, H3220 and all H3605 that H834 in them is , and rested H5117 the seventh H7637 day: H3117 wherefore H5921 H3651 the LORD H3068 blessed H1288 the H853 sabbath H7676 day, H3117 and hallowed H6942 it.
12 Honor H3513 H853 thy father H1 and thy mother: H517 that H4616 thy days H3117 may be long H748 upon H5921 the land H127 which H834 the LORD H3068 thy God H430 giveth H5414 thee.

18 And all H3605 the people H5971 saw H7200 H853 the thunderings, H6963 and the lightnings, H3940 and the noise H6963 of the trumpet, H7782 and the mountain H2022 smoking: H6226 and when the people H5971 saw H7200 it , they removed, H5128 and stood H5975 afar off H4480 H7350 .
19 And they said H559 unto H413 Moses, H4872 Speak H1696 thou H859 with H5973 us , and we will hear: H8085 but let not H408 God H430 speak H1696 with H5973 us, lest H6435 we die. H4191

22 And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto H413 Moses, H4872 Thus H3541 thou shalt say H559 unto H413 the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 Ye H859 have seen H7200 that H3588 I have talked H1696 with H5973 you from H4480 heaven. H8064
23 Ye shall not H3808 make H6213 with H854 me gods H430 of silver, H3701 neither H3808 shall ye make H6213 unto you gods H430 of gold. H2091
24 An altar H4196 of earth H127 thou shalt make H6213 unto me , and shalt sacrifice H2076 thereon H5921 H853 thy burnt offerings, H5930 and thy peace offerings, H8002 H853 thy sheep, H6629 and thine oxen: H1241 in all H3605 places H4725 where H834 I record H2142 H853 my name H8034 I will come H935 unto H413 thee , and I will bless H1288 thee.
25 And if H518 thou wilt make H6213 me an altar H4196 of stone, H68 thou shalt not H3808 build H1129 it of hewn stone: H1496 for H3588 if thou lift up H5130 thy tool H2719 upon H5921 it , thou hast polluted H2490 it.
26 Neither H3808 shalt thou go up H5927 by steps H4609 unto H5921 mine altar, H4196 that H834 thy nakedness H6172 be not H3808 discovered H1540 thereon. H5921
