Isaiah 5:1 (GNB) Good News Bible

1 Listen while I sing you this song, a song of my friend and his vineyard: My friend had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.
2 He dug the soil and cleared it of stones; he planted the finest vines. He built a tower to guard them, dug a pit for treading the grapes. He waited for the grapes to ripen, but every grape was sour.
3 So now my friend says, "You people who live in Jerusalem and Judah, judge between my vineyard and me.
4 Is there anything I failed to do for it? Then why did it produce sour grapes and not the good grapes I expected?
5 "Here is what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge around it, break down the wall that protects it, and let wild animals eat it and trample it down.
6 I will let it be overgrown with weeds. I will not trim the vines or hoe the ground; instead, I will let briers and thorns cover it. I will even forbid the clouds to let rain fall on it."
7 Israel is the vineyard of the LORD Almighty; the people of Judah are the vines he planted. He expected them to do what was good, but instead they committed murder. He expected them to do what was right, but their victims cried out for justice.
8 You are doomed! You buy more houses and fields to add to those you already have. Soon there will be no place for anyone else to live, and you alone will live in the land.
9 I have heard the LORD Almighty say, "All these big, fine houses will be empty ruins.
10 The grapevines growing on five acres of land will yield only five gallons of wine. Ten bushels of seed will produce only one bushel of grain."
11 You are doomed! You get up early in the morning to start drinking, and you spend long evenings getting drunk.
12 At your feasts you have harps and tambourines and flutes---and wine. But you don't understand what the LORD is doing,
13 and so you will be carried away as prisoners. Your leaders will starve to death, and the common people will die of thirst.
14 The world of the dead is hungry for them, and it opens its mouth wide. It gulps down the nobles of Jerusalem along with the noisy crowd of common people.
15 Everyone will be disgraced, and all who are proud will be humbled.
16 But the LORD Almighty shows his greatness by doing what is right, and he reveals his holiness by judging his people.
17 In the ruins of the cities lambs will eat grass and young goats will find pasture.
18 You are doomed! You are unable to break free from your sins.
19 You say, "Let the LORD hurry up and do what he says he will, so that we can see it. Let Israel's holy God carry out his plans; let's see what he has in mind."
20 You are doomed! You call evil good and call good evil. You turn darkness into light and light into darkness. You make what is bitter sweet, and what is sweet you make bitter.
21 You are doomed! You think you are wise, so very clever.
22 You are doomed! Heroes of the wine bottle! Brave and fearless when it comes to mixing drinks!
23 But for just a bribe you let the guilty go free, and you keep the innocent from getting justice.
24 So now, just as straw and dry grass shrivel and burn in the fire, your roots will rot and your blossoms will dry up and blow away, because you have rejected what the LORD Almighty, Israel's holy God, has taught us.
25 The LORD is angry with his people and has stretched out his hand to punish them. The mountains will shake, and the bodies of those who die will be left in the streets like rubbish. Yet even then the LORD's anger will not be ended, but his hand will still be stretched out to punish.
26 The LORD gives a signal to call for a distant nation. He whistles for them to come from the ends of the earth. And here they come, swiftly, quickly!
27 None of them grow tired; none of them stumble. They never doze or sleep. Not a belt is loose; not a sandal strap is broken.
28 Their arrows are sharp, and their bows are ready to shoot. Their horses' hoofs are as hard as flint, and their chariot wheels turn like a whirlwind.
29 The soldiers roar like lions that have killed an animal and are carrying it off where no one can take it away from them.
30 When that day comes, they will roar over Israel as loudly as the sea. Look at this country! Darkness and distress! The light is swallowed by darkness.

3 And now H6258 W-ADV , O inhabitants H3427 VQPMS of Jerusalem H3389 , and men H376 W-NMS of Judah H3063 , judge H8199 , I pray you H4994 IJEC , between H996 W-PREP-1MS me and my vineyard H3754 .
4 What H4100 IPRO could have been done H6213 W-VQY3MS more H5750 ADV to my vineyard H3754 , that I have not H3808 W-NPAR done H6213 W-VQY3MS in it ? wherefore H4069 IPRO , when I looked H6960 that it should bring forth H6213 W-VQY3MS grapes H6025 , brought it forth H6213 W-VQY3MS wild grapes H891 ?
5 And now H6258 W-ADV go to ; I will tell H3045 you what H834 RPRO I H589 PPRO-1MS will do H6213 VQPMS to my vineyard H3754 : I will take away H5493 the hedge H4881 thereof , and it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS eaten up H1197 ; and break down H6555 the wall H1447 thereof , and it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS trodden down H4823 :
6 And I will lay H7896 it waste H1326 : it shall not H3808 NADV be pruned H2167 , nor H3808 W-NADV digged H5737 ; but there shall come up H5927 briers H8068 and thorns H7898 : I will also command H6680 the clouds H5645 that they rain no rain H4305 upon H5921 PREP-3MS it .
7 For H3588 CONJ the vineyard H3754 of the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 is the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 , and the men H376 W-NMS of Judah H3063 his pleasant H8191 plant H5194 : and he looked H6960 for judgment H4941 L-NMS , but behold H2009 IJEC oppression H4939 ; for righteousness H6666 , but behold H2009 IJEC a cry H6818 .
8 Woe H1945 unto them that join H5060 house H1004 to house H1004 , that lay H7126 field H7704 to field H7704 , till H5704 PREP there be no H657 place H4725 NUM-MS , that they may be placed H3427 alone H905 in the midst H7130 of the earth H776 D-GFS !
9 In mine ears H241 said the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , Of a truth H518 PART many H7227 AMP houses H1004 NMP shall be H1961 desolate H8047 , even great H1419 AMP and fair H2896 , without H369 inhabitant H3427 .
10 Yea H3588 CONJ , ten H6235 acres H6776 of vineyard H3754 shall yield H6213 one H259 MFS bath H1324 , and the seed H2233 of a homer H2563 NMS shall yield H6213 VQY3MS an ephah H374 .
11 Woe H1945 unto them that rise up early H7925 in the morning H1242 , that they may follow H7291 strong drink H7941 ; that continue H309 until night H5399 , till wine H3196 NMS inflame H1814 them !
12 And the harp H3658 , and the viol H5035 , the tabret H8596 , and pipe H2485 , and wine H3196 , are H1961 W-VQQ3MS in their feasts H4960 : but they regard H5027 not H3808 NADV the work H6467 of the LORD H3068 EDS , neither H3808 NADV consider H7200 VQQ3MP the operation H4639 of his hands H3027 CFD-3MS .
13 Therefore H3651 L-ADV my people H5971 are gone into captivity H1540 , because they have no H1097 M-NPAR knowledge H1847 NFS : and their honorable H3519 men H4962 CMP are famished H7458 NMS , and their multitude H1995 dried up H6704 with thirst H6772 .
14 Therefore H3651 L-ADV hell H7585 hath enlarged H7337 herself H5315 , and opened H6473 her mouth H6310 without H1097 L-ADV measure H2706 NMS : and their glory H1926 , and their multitude H1995 , and their pomp H7588 , and he that rejoiceth H5938 , shall descend H3381 into it .
15 And the mean man H120 NMS shall be brought down H7817 , and the mighty man H376 NMS shall be humbled H8213 , and the eyes H5869 W-CMD of the lofty H1364 shall be humbled H8213 :
16 But the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 shall be exalted H1361 in judgment H4941 B-NMS , and God H410 that is holy H6918 shall be sanctified H6942 in righteousness H6666 .
17 Then shall the lambs H3532 feed H7462 after their manner H1699 , and the waste places H2723 of the fat ones H4220 shall strangers H1481 eat H398 .
18 Woe H1945 unto them that draw H4900 iniquity H5771 with cords H2256 B-CMP of vanity H7723 , and sin H2402 as it were with a cart H5699 rope H5688 :
19 That say H559 D-VQPMP , Let him make speed H4116 , and hasten H2363 his work H4639 , that H4616 L-CONJ we may see H7200 it : and let the counsel H6098 CFS of the Holy One H6918 of Israel H3478 draw nigh H7126 and come H935 , that we may know H3045 it !
20 Woe H1945 unto them that call H559 D-VQPMP evil H7451 LD-AMS good H2896 AMS , and good H2896 AMS evil H7451 AMS ; that put H7760 darkness H2822 NMS for light H216 L-NMS , and light H216 W-CMS for darkness H2822 ; that put H7760 bitter H4751 AMS for sweet H4966 , and sweet H4966 for bitter H4751 AMS !
21 Woe H1945 unto them that are wise H2450 AMP in their own eyes H5869 , and prudent H995 in H5048 their own sight H6440 CMP-3MP !
22 Woe H1945 unto them that are mighty H1368 to drink H8354 wine H3196 , and men H376 of strength H2428 NMS to mingle H4537 strong drink H7941 :
23 Which justify H6663 the wicked H7563 AMS for H6118 reward H7810 , and take away H5493 the righteousness H6666 of the righteous H6662 AMP from H4480 M-PREP-3MS him !
24 Therefore H3651 L-ADV as the fire H784 CMS devoureth H398 the stubble H7179 NMS , and the flame H3852 consumeth H7503 the chaff H2842 , so their root H8328 shall be H1961 VQY3MS as rottenness H4716 , and their blossom H6525 shall go up H5927 VQY3MS as dust H80 : because H3588 CONJ they have cast away H3988 VQQ3MP the law H8451 CFS of the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , and despised H5006 the word H565 of the Holy One H6918 of Israel H3478 .
25 Therefore H5921 PREP is the anger H639 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS kindled H2734 VQQ3MS against his people H5971 B-CMS-3MS , and he hath stretched forth H5186 W-VQY3MS his hand H3027 CFS-3MS against H5921 PREP them , and hath smitten H5221 them : and the hills H2022 did tremble H7264 , and their carcasses H5038 were torn H1961 W-VQY3FS in the midst H7130 of the streets H2351 . For all H3605 B-CMS this H2063 DPRO his anger H639 CMS-3MS is not H3808 NADV turned away H7725 VQQ3MS , but his hand H3027 CFS-3MS is stretched out H5186 still H5750 W-ADV .
26 And he will lift up H5375 an ensign H5251 to the nations H1471 LD-NMP from far H7350 M-AMS , and will hiss H8319 unto them from the end H7097 M-CMS of the earth H776 D-GFS : and , behold H2009 IJEC , they shall come H935 VQY3MS with speed H4120 swiftly H7031 :
27 None H369 NPAR shall be weary H5889 AMS nor H369 W-NPAR stumble H3782 VQPMS among them ; none H3808 NADV shall slumber H5123 nor H3808 W-NADV sleep H3462 ; neither H3808 W-NADV shall the girdle H232 NMS of their loins H2504 be loosed H6605 , nor H3808 W-NADV the latchet H8288 of their shoes H5275 be broken H5423 :
28 Whose H834 RPRO arrows H2671 are sharp H8150 , and all H3605 W-CMS their bows H7198 bent H1869 , their horses H5483 \' hooves H6541 shall be counted H2803 like flint H6864 , and their wheels H1534 like a whirlwind H5492 :
29 Their roaring H7581 shall be like a lion H3833 , they shall roar H7580 like young lions H3715 : yea , they shall roar H5098 , and lay hold H270 W-VQY3MS of the prey H2964 , and shall carry it away safe H6403 , and none H369 W-NPAR shall deliver H5337 VHPMS it .
30 And in that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS they shall roar H5098 against H5921 PREP-3MS them like the roaring H5100 of the sea H3220 NMS : and if one look H5027 unto the land H776 LD-NFS , behold H2009 IJEC darkness H2822 NMS and sorrow H6862 AMS , and the light H216 is darkened H2821 VQQ3MS in the heavens H6183 thereof .
