1 Now King Ben Hadad of Syria assembled all his army, along with thirty-two other kings with their horses and chariots. He marched against Samaria and besieged and attacked it.

2 He sent messengers to King Ahab of Israel, who was in the city.

3 He said to him, "This is what Ben Hadad says, 'Your silver and your gold are mine, as well as the best of your wives and sons.'"

4 The king of Israel replied, "It is just as you say, my master, O king. I and all I own belong to you."

5 The messengers came again and said, "This is what Ben Hadad says, 'I sent this message to you, "You must give me your silver, gold, wives, and sons."

6 But now at this time tomorrow I will send my servants to you and they will search through your palace and your servants' houses. They will carry away all your valuables."

7 The king of Israel summoned all the leaders of the land and said, "Notice how this man is looking for trouble. Indeed, he demanded my wives, sons, silver, and gold, and I did not resist him."

8 All the leaders and people said to him, "Do not give in or agree to his demands."

9 So he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, "Say this to my master, the king, 'I will give you everything you demanded at first from your servant, but I am unable to agree to this latest demand.'" So the messengers went back and gave their report.

10 Ben Hadad sent another message to him, "May the gods judge me severely if there is enough dirt left in Samaria for my soldiers to scoop up in their hands."

11 The king of Israel replied, "Tell him the one who puts on his battle gear should not boast like one who is taking it off."

12 When Ben Hadad received this reply, he and the other kings were drinking in their quarters. He ordered his servants, "Get ready to attack!" So they got ready to attack the city.

13 Now a prophet visited King Ahab of Israel and said, "This is what the LORD says, 'Do you see this huge army? Look, I am going to hand it over to you this very day. Then you will know that I am the LORD.'"

14 Ahab asked, "By whom will this be accomplished?" He answered, "This is what the LORD says, 'By the servants of the district governors.'" Ahab asked, "Who will launch the attack?" He answered, "You will."

15 So Ahab assembled the 232 servants of the district governors. After that he assembled all the Israelite army, numbering 7,000.

16 They marched out at noon, while Ben Hadad and the thirty-two kings allied with him were drinking heavily in their quarters.

17 The servants of the district governors led the march. When Ben Hadad sent messengers, they reported back to him, "Men are marching out of Samaria."

18 He ordered, "Whether they come in peace or to do battle, take them alive."

19 They marched out of the city with the servants of the district governors in the lead and the army behind them.

20 Each one struck down an enemy soldier; the Syrians fled and Israel chased them. King Ben Hadad of Syria escaped on horseback with some horsemen.

21 Then the king of Israel marched out and struck down the horses and chariots; he thoroughly defeated Syria.

22 The prophet visited the king of Israel and instructed him, "Go, fortify your defenses. Determine what you must do, for in the spring the king of Syria will attack you."

23 Now the advisers of the king of Syria said to him: "Their God is a god of the mountains. That's why they overpowered us. But if we fight them in the plains, we will certainly overpower them.

24 So do this: Dismiss the kings from their command, and replace them with military commanders.

25 Muster an army like the one you lost, with the same number of horses and chariots. Then we will fight them in the plains; we will certainly overpower them." He approved their plan and did as they advised.

26 In the spring Ben Hadad mustered the Syrian army and marched to Aphek to fight Israel.

27 When the Israelites had mustered and had received their supplies, they marched out to face them in battle. When the Israelites deployed opposite them, they were like two small flocks of goats, but the Syrians filled the land.

28 The prophet visited the king of Israel and said, "This is what the LORD says: 'Because the Syrians said, "The LORD is a god of the mountains and not a god of the valleys," I will hand over to you this entire huge army. Then you will know that I am the LORD.'"

29 The armies were deployed opposite each other for seven days. On the seventh day the battle began, and the Israelites killed 100,000 Syrian foot soldiers in one day.

30 The remaining 27,000 ran to Aphek and went into the city, but the wall fell on them. Now Ben Hadad ran into the city and hid in an inner room.

31 His advisers said to him, "Look, we have heard that the kings of the Israelite dynasty are kind. Allow us to put sackcloth around our waists and ropes on our heads and surrender to the king of Israel. Maybe he will spare our lives."

32 So they put sackcloth around their waists and ropes on their heads and went to the king of Israel. They said, "Your servant Ben Hadad says, 'Please let me live!'" Ahab replied, "Is he still alive? He is my brother."

33 The men took this as a good omen and quickly accepted his offer, saying, "Ben Hadad is your brother." Ahab then said, "Go, get him." So Ben Hadad came out to him, and Ahab pulled him up into his chariot.

34 Ben Hadad said, "I will return the cities my father took from your father. You may set up markets in Damascus, just as my father did in Samaria." Ahab then said, "I want to make a treaty with you before I dismiss you." So he made a treaty with him and then dismissed him.

35 One of the members of the prophetic guild, speaking with divine authority, ordered his companion, "Wound me!" But the man refused to wound him.

36 So the prophet said to him, "Because you have disobeyed the LORD, as soon as you leave me a lion will kill you." When he left him, a lion attacked and killed him.

37 He found another man and said, "Wound me!" So the man wounded him severely.

38 The prophet then went and stood by the road, waiting for the king. He also disguised himself by putting a bandage down over his eyes.

39 When the king passed by, he called out to the king, "Your servant went out into the heat of the battle, and then a man turned aside and brought me a prisoner. He told me, 'Guard this prisoner. If he ends up missing for any reason, you will pay with your life or with a talent of silver.'

40 Well, it just so happened that while your servant was doing this and that, he disappeared." The king of Israel said to him, "Your punishment is already determined by your own testimony."

41 The prophet quickly removed the bandage from his eyes and the king of Israel recognized he was one of the prophets.

42 The prophet then said to him, "This is what the LORD says, 'Because you released a man I had determined should die, you will pay with your life and your people will suffer instead of his people.'"

43 The king of Israel went home to Samaria bitter and angry.

3 Thy silver ^H3701 and thy gold ^H2091 is mine ; thy wives ^H802 also and thy children ^H1121 ^W-CMP-2MS , even the goodliest ^H2896 , are mine .

4 And the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Israel ^H3478 answered ^H6030 ^W-VQY3MS and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , My lord ^H113 , O king ^H4428 ^NMS , according to thy saying ^H1697 , I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS am thine , and all ^H3605 ^W-CMS that ^H834 ^RPRO I have .

5 And the messengers ^H4397 came again ^H7725 ^W-VUY3MP , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP , Thus ^H3541 speaketh ^H559 ^VQQ3MS Ben ^H1130 - hadad , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Although ^H3588 ^CONJ I have sent ^H7971 unto ^H413 ^PREP-2MS thee , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Thou shalt deliver ^H5414 me thy silver ^H3701 , and thy gold ^H2091 , and thy wives ^H802 , and thy children ^H1121 ^W-CMP-2MS ;

6 Yet ^H3588 ^CONJ I will send ^H7971 my servants ^H5650 unto ^H413 ^PREP-2MS thee tomorrow ^H4279 ^NMS about ^H518 ^PART this time ^H6256 ^KD-NMS , and they shall search ^H2664 thine house ^H1004 ^CMS-2MS , and the houses ^H1004 of thy servants ^H5650 ; and it shall be ^H1961 ^W-VQQ3MS , that whatsoever ^H3605 ^NMS is pleasant ^H4261 in thine eyes ^H5869 ^CMD-2MS , they shall put ^H7760 ^VQY3MP it in their hand ^H3027 ^B-CFS-3MP , and take it away ^H3947 .

9 Wherefore he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto the messengers ^H4397 of Ben ^H1130 - hadad , Tell ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS my lord ^H113 the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS , All ^H3605 ^NMS that ^H834 ^RPRO thou didst send ^H7971 for to ^H413 ^PREP thy servant ^H5650 at the first ^H7223 I will do ^H6213 : but this ^H2088 ^D-PMS thing ^H1697 I may ^H3201 not ^H3808 ^NADV do ^H6213 ^L-VQFC . And the messengers ^H4397 departed ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MP , and brought ^H7725 him word ^H1697 again .

10 And Ben ^H1130 - hadad sent ^H7971 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , The gods ^H430 ^EDP do ^H6213 so ^H3541 unto me , and more ^H3254 also ^H3541 , if ^H518 ^PART the dust ^H6083 ^CMS of Samaria ^H8111 shall suffice ^H5606 ^VQY3MS for handfuls ^H8168 for all ^H3605 ^L-CMS the people ^H5971 that ^H834 ^RPRO follow ^H7272 me .

11 And the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Israel ^H3478 answered ^H6030 ^W-VQY3MS and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Tell ^H1696 him , Let not ^H408 ^NPAR him that girdeth ^H2296 on his harness boast himself ^H1984 as he that putteth it off ^H6605 .

12 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS , when ^H8085 Ben ^H853 - hadad ^H853 heard ^H853 this ^H2088 ^D-PMS message ^H1697 ^D-NMS , as he ^H1931 ^W-PPRO-3MS was drinking ^H8354 ^VQPMS , he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS and the kings ^H4428 ^WD-NMP in the pavilions ^H5521 , that he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP his servants ^H5650 , Set ^H7760 yourselves in array . And they set ^H7760 ^W-VQY3MP themselves in array against ^H5921 ^PREP the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS .

13 And , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , there came ^H5066 a ^H259 ^MMS prophet ^H5030 unto ^H413 ^PREP Ahab ^H256 king ^H4428 ^NMS of Israel ^H3478 , saying ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Thus ^H3541 saith ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , Hast thou seen ^H7200 all ^H3605 ^NMS this ^H2088 ^D-PMS great ^H1419 ^D-AMS multitude ^H1995 ? behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , I will deliver ^H5414 it into thine hand ^H3027 this day ^H3117 ^D-AMS ; and thou shalt know ^H3045 ^W-VQY2MS that ^H3588 ^CONJ I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS am the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS .

15 Then he numbered ^H6485 the young men ^H5288 of the princes ^H8269 ^CMP of the provinces ^H4082 , and they were ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MP two hundred ^H3967 ^MFD and thirty ^H7970 ^W-MMP two ^H8147 ^ONUM : and after ^H310 them he numbered ^H6485 ^VQQ3MS all ^H3605 ^NMS the people ^H5971 , even all ^H3605 ^NMS the children ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 , being seven ^H7651 ^RMS thousand ^H505 .

16 And they went out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MP at noon ^H6672 . But Ben ^H1130 - hadad was drinking ^H8354 ^VQPMS himself drunk ^H7910 in the pavilions ^H5521 , he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS and the kings ^H4428 ^NMS , the thirty ^H7970 and two ^H8147 kings ^H4428 ^NMS that helped ^H5826 ^VQPMS him .

17 And the young men ^H5288 of the princes ^H8269 ^CMP of the provinces ^H4082 went out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MP first ^H7223 ; and Ben ^H1130 - hadad sent out ^H7971 ^W-VQY3MS , and they told ^H5046 him , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , There are men ^H376 come out ^H3318 ^VQQ3MP of Samaria ^H8111 .

18 And he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Whether ^H518 ^PART they be come out ^H3318 for peace ^H7965 , take ^H8610 them alive ^H2416 ^NMP ; or whether ^H518 ^PART they be come out ^H3318 for war ^H4421 , take ^H8610 them alive ^H2416 ^NMP .

19 So these ^H428 ^W-PMP young men ^H5288 of the princes ^H8269 ^CMP of the provinces ^H4082 came out ^H3318 ^VQQ3MP of ^H4480 ^PREP the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS , and the army ^H2428 which ^H834 ^RPRO followed ^H310 them .

20 And they slew ^H5221 ^W-VHY3MP every one ^H376 ^NMS his man ^H376 ^NMS : and the Syrians ^H758 ^EMS fled ^H5127 ^W-VQY3MP ; and Israel ^H3478 pursued ^H7291 them : and Ben ^H1130 - hadad the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Syria ^H758 ^EMS escaped ^H4422 on ^H5921 ^PREP a horse ^H5483 with the horsemen ^H6571 .

21 And the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Israel ^H3478 went out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MS , and smote ^H5221 ^W-VHY3MS the horses ^H5483 and chariots ^H7393 , and slew ^H5221 the Syrians ^H758 with a great ^H1419 ^AFS slaughter ^H4347 .

22 And the prophet ^H5030 came ^H5066 to ^H413 ^PREP the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Israel ^H3478 , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto him , Go ^H1980 ^VQI2MS , strengthen thyself ^H2388 , and mark ^H3045 ^W-VQI2MS , and see ^H7200 ^W-VQI2MS what ^H834 ^RPRO thou doest ^H6213 ^VQY2MS : for ^H3588 ^CONJ at the return ^H8666 of the year ^H8141 the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Syria ^H758 ^EMS will come up ^H5927 against ^H5921 ^PREP-2MS thee .

23 And the servants ^H5650 of the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Syria ^H758 ^EMS said ^H559 ^VQQ3MP unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him , Their gods ^H430 ^CDP are gods ^H430 of the hills ^H2022 ^NMP ; therefore ^H3651 ^ADV they were stronger ^H2388 than ^H4480 ^M-PREP-3MS we ; but ^H199 ^W-CONJ let us fight ^H3898 against ^H854 ^PREP-3MP them in the plain ^H4334 , and surely ^H518 ^PART , we shall be stronger ^H2388 than ^H4480 ^M-PREP-3MS they .

24 And do ^H6213 ^VQI2MS this ^H2088 ^D-PMS thing ^H1697 ^D-NMS , Take the kings away ^H5493 , every man ^H376 ^NMS out of his place ^H4725 ^M-CMS-3MP , and put ^H7760 ^W-VQI2MS captains ^H6346 in their rooms ^H8478 :

25 And number ^H4487 thee an army ^H2428 ^NMS , like the army ^H2428 that thou hast lost ^H5307 , horse ^H5483 for horse ^H5483 , and chariot ^H7393 for chariot ^H7393 : and we will fight against ^H3898 them in the plain ^H4334 , and surely ^H518 ^PART we shall be stronger ^H2388 than ^H4480 they . 26 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VPY3MS at the return ^H8666 of the year ^H8141 , that Ben ^H1130 - hadad numbered ^H6485 the Syrians ^H758 ^EMS , and went up ^H5927 ^W-VHY3MS to Aphek ^H663 , to fight ^H4421 against ^H5973 ^PREP Israel ^H3478 ^LMS .

27 And the children ^H1121 ^W-CMP of Israel ^H3478 were numbered ^H6485 , and were all present ^H3557 , and went ^H1980 ^W-VQY3MP against ^H7121 them : and the children ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 pitched ^H2583 ^W-VQY3MP before ^H5048 them like two ^H8147 little flocks ^H2835 of kids ^H5795 ; but the Syrians ^H758 filled ^H4390 the country ^H776 ^D-GFS .

28 And there came ^H5066 a man ^H376 ^NMS of God ^H430 ^D-EDP , and spoke ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Israel ^H3478 , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Thus ^H3541 saith ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , Because ^H3282 ^ADV the Syrians ^H758 ^EMS have said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , The LORD ^H3068 ^EDS is God ^H430 ^CDP of the hills ^H2022 ^NMP , but he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS is not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR God ^H430 ^CDP of the valleys ^H6010 ^NMP , therefore will I deliver ^H5414 all ^H3605 ^NMS this ^H2088 ^D-PMS great ^H1419 ^D-AMS multitude ^H1995 into thine hand ^H3027 ^B-CFS-2MS , and ye shall know ^H3045 that ^H3588 ^CONJ I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS am the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS .

29 And they pitched ^H2583 one ^H428 ^PMP over against ^H5227 the other ^H428 ^PMP seven ^H7651 ^RMS days ^H3117 ^B-NMS . And so it was ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS , that in the seventh ^H7637 ^D-ONUM day ^H3117 ^B-NMS the battle ^H4421 was joined ^H7126 ^W-VQY3FS : and the children ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 slew ^H5221 ^W-VHY3MP of the Syrians ^H758 ^EMS a hundred ^H3967 ^MFS thousand ^H505 ^W-BMS footmen ^H7273 in one ^H259 ^ONUM day ^H3117 ^B-NMS .

30 But the rest ^H3498 fled ^H5127 ^W-VQY3MP to Aphek ^H663 , into ^H413 ^PREP the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS ; and there a wall ^H2346 fell ^H5307 ^W-VQY3FS upon ^H5921 ^PREP twenty ^H6242 and seven ^H7651 ^W-MMS thousand ^H505 ^W-BMS of the men ^H376 ^NMS that were left ^H3498 . And Ben ^H1130 - hadad fled ^H5127 , and came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS into ^H413 ^PREP the city ^H5892 ^D-GFS , into an inner chamber ^H2315 .

31 And his servants ^H5650 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MP unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him , Behold ^H2009 ^IJEC now ^H4994 ^IJEC , we have heard ^H8085 ^VQQ1MP that ^H3588 ^CONJ the kings ^H4428 ^NMS of the house ^H1004 ^CMS of Israel ^H3478 are merciful ^H2617 ^NMS kings ^H4428 ^NMS : let us , I pray thee ^H4994 ^IJEC , put ^H7760 sackcloth ^H8242 ^NMP on our loins ^H4975 , and ropes ^H2256 upon our heads ^H7218 , and go out ^H3318 to ^H413 ^PREP the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Israel ^H3478 : peradventure ^H194 ^ADV he will save ^H2421 ^VPY3MS thy life ^H5315 .

32 So they girded ^H2296 sackcloth ^H8242 ^NMP on their loins ^H4975 , and put ropes ^H2256 on their heads ^H7218 , and came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MP to ^H413 ^PREP the king ^H4428 ^NMS of Israel ^H3478 , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Thy servant ^H5650 Ben ^H1130 - hadad saith ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , I pray thee ^H4994 ^IJEC , let me ^H5315 ^CFS-1MS live ^H2421 . And he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Is he yet ^H5750 alive ^H2416 ^AMS ? he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS is my brother ^H251 .

33 Now the men ^H376 did diligently observe ^H5172 whether any thing would come from ^H4480 him , and did hastily ^H4116 catch ^H2480 it : and they said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Thy brother ^H251 ^CMS-2MS Ben ^H1130 - hadad . Then he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Go ^H935 ye , bring ^H3947 him . Then Ben ^H1130 - hadad came forth ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MS to ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him ; and he caused him to come up ^H5927 into ^H5921 ^PREP the chariot ^H4818 .

34 And ^W-VQY3MS Ben ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS - hadad ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him , The cities ^H5892 , which ^H834 ^RPRO my father ^H1 ^NMS took ^H3947 from thy father ^H1 ^NMS , I will restore ^H7725 ; and thou shalt make ^H7760 ^VQY2MS streets ^H2351 for thee in Damascus ^H1834 , as ^H834 ^RPRO my father ^H1 ^NMS made ^H7760 ^VQQ3MS in Samaria ^H8111 . Then said Ahab , I ^H589 ^W-PPRO-1MS will send thee away ^H7971 with this covenant ^H1285 . So he made ^H3772 a covenant ^H1285 ^CFS with him , and sent him away ^H7971 .

35 And a certain ^H259 ^MMS man ^H376 ^D-NMS of the sons ^H1121 of the prophets ^H5030 said ^H559 ^VQQ3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP his neighbor ^H7453 ^NMS-3MS in the word ^H1697 of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , Smite ^H5221 me , I pray thee ^H4994 ^IJEC . And the man ^H376 ^D-NMS refused ^H3985 to smite ^H5221 him .

36 Then said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS he unto him , Because ^H3282 ^ADV thou hast not ^H3808 ^ADV obeyed ^H8085 ^VQQ2MS the voice ^H6963 ^B-NMS of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , behold ^H2009 , as soon as thou art departed ^H1980 ^VQPMS from me , a lion ^H738 shall slay ^H5221 thee .
