1. When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he summoned 180,000 skilled warriors from Judah and Benjamin to attack Israel and restore the kingdom to Rehoboam.

And when Rehoboam H7346 was come H935 to Jerusalem H3389 , he gathered H6950 H853 of the house H1004 of Judah H3063 and Benjamin H1144 a hundred H3967 and fourscore H8084 thousand H505 chosen H977 men , which were warriors H6213 H4421 , to fight H3898 against H5973 Israel H3478 , that he might bring H7725 H853 the kingdom H4467 again to Rehoboam H7346 .

2. But the LORD told Shemaiah the prophet,

2. But the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 came H1961 to H413 Shemaiah H8098 the man H376 of God H430 , saying H559 ,

3. "Say this to King Rehoboam son of Solomon of Judah and to all the Israelites in Judah and Benjamin,
|
3. Speak H559 unto H413 Rehoboam H7346 the son H1121 of Solomon H8010 , king H4428 of Judah H3063 , and to H413 all H3605 Israel H3478 in Judah H3063 and Benjamin H1144 , saying H559 ,

4. 'The LORD says this: "Do not attack and make war with your brothers. Each of you go home, for I have caused this to happen."'" They obeyed the LORD and called off the attack against Jeroboam.
|
4. Thus H3541 saith H559 the LORD H3068 , Ye shall not H3808 go up H5927 , nor H3808 fight H3898 against H5973 your brethren H251 : return H7725 every man H376 to his house H1004 : for H3588 this H2088 thing H1697 is done H1961 of H4480 H854 me . And they obeyed H8085 H853 the words H1697 of the LORD H3068 , and returned H7725 from going H4480 H1980 against H413 Jeroboam H3379 .

5. Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem; he built up these fortified cities throughout Judah:

5. And Rehoboam H7346 dwelt H3427 in Jerusalem H3389 , and built H1129 cities H5892 for defense H4692 in Judah H3063 .

6. Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,
|
6. He built H1129 even H853 Bethlehem H1035 , and Etam H5862 , and Tekoa H8620 ,

|
7. Beth Zur, Soco, Adullam,
|
7. And Beth H1049 -zur , and Shoco H7755 , and Adullam H5725 ,
|
|
8. Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,
|
8. And Gath H1661 , and Mareshah H4762 , and Ziph H2128 ,
|
|
9. Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,
|
9. And Adoraim H115 , and Lachish H3923 , and Azekah H5825 ,
|
|
10. Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron. These were the fortified cities in Judah and Benjamin.

10. And Zorah H6681 , and Aijalon H357 , and Hebron H2275 , which H834 are in Judah H3063 and in Benjamin H1144 fenced H4694 cities H5892 .

|
11. He fortified these cities and placed officers in them, as well as storehouses of food, olive oil, and wine.
|
11. And he fortified H2388 H853 the strongholds H4694 , and put H5414 captains H5057 in them , and store H214 of victual H3978 , and of oil H8081 and wine H3196 .
|
|
12. In each city there were shields and spears; he strongly fortified them. Judah and Benjamin belonged to him.
|
12. And in every H3605 several city H5892 H5892 he put shields H6793 and spears H7420 , and made them exceeding strong H2388 H7235 H3966 , having H1961 Judah H3063 and Benjamin H1144 on his side.

13. The priests and Levites who lived throughout Israel supported him, no matter where they resided.
|
13. And the priests H3548 and the Levites H3881 that H834 were in all H3605 Israel H3478 resorted H3320 to H5921 him out of all H4480 H3605 their coasts H1366 .

|
14. The Levites even left their pasturelands and their property behind and came to Judah and Jerusalem, for Jeroboam and his sons prohibited them from serving as the LORD's priests.
|
14. For H3588 the Levites H3881 left H5800 H853 their suburbs H4054 and their possession H272 , and came H1980 to Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389 : for H3588 Jeroboam H3379 and his sons H1121 had cast them off H2186 from executing the priest's office H4480 H3547 unto the LORD H3068 :

15. Jeroboam appointed his own priests to serve at the worship centers and to lead in the worship of the goat idols and calf idols he had made.
|
15. And he ordained H5975 him priests H3548 for the high places H1116 , and for the devils H8163 , and for the calves H5695 which H834 he had made H6213 .
|
|
16. Those among all the Israelite tribes who were determined to worship the LORD God of Israel followed them to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the LORD God of their ancestors.
|
16. And after H310 them out of all H4480 H3605 the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 such as set H5414 H853 their hearts H3824 to seek H1245 H853 the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478 came H935 to Jerusalem H3389 , to sacrifice H2076 unto the LORD H3068 God H430 of their fathers H1 .

17. They supported the kingdom of Judah and were loyal to Rehoboam son of Solomon for three years; they followed the edicts of David and Solomon for three years.

17. So they strengthened H2388 H853 the kingdom H4438 of Judah H3063 , and made H853 Rehoboam H7346 the son H1121 of Solomon H8010 strong H553 , three H7969 years H8141 : for H3588 three H7969 years H8141 they walked H1980 in the way H1870 of David H1732 and Solomon H8010 .

18. Rehoboam married Mahalath the daughter of David's son Jerimoth and of Abihail, the daughter of Jesse's son Eliab.

18. And Rehoboam H7346 took H3947 him H853 Mahalath H4258 the daughter H1323 of Jerimoth H3406 the son H1121 of David H1732 to wife H802 , and Abihail H32 the daughter H1323 of Eliab H446 the son H1121 of Jesse H3448 ;

19. She bore him sons named Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham.
|
19. Which bore H3205 him children H1121 ; H853 Jeush H3266 , and Shamariah H8114 , and Zaham H2093 .
|
|
20. He later married Maacah the daughter of Absalom. She bore to him Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith.
|
20. And after H310 her he took H3947 H853 Maachah H4601 the daughter H1323 of Absalom H53 ; which bore H3205 him H853 Abijah H29 , and Attai H6262 , and Ziza H2124 , and Shelomith H8019 .

21. Rehoboam loved Maacah daughter of Absalom more than his other wives and concubines. He had eighteen wives and sixty concubines; he fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.

21. And Rehoboam H7346 loved H157 H853 Maachah H4601 the daughter H1323 of Absalom H53 above all H4480 H3605 his wives H802 and his concubines H6370 : ( for H3588 he took H5375 eighteen H8083 H6240 wives H802 , and threescore H8346 concubines H6370 ; and begot H3205 twenty H6242 and eight H8083 sons H1121 , and threescore H8346 daughters H1323 .)

22. Rehoboam appointed Abijah son of Maacah as the leader over his brothers, for he intended to name him his successor.

22. And Rehoboam H7346 made H5975 H853 Abijah H29 the son H1121 of Maachah H4601 the chief H7218 , to be ruler H5057 among his brethren H251 : for H3588 he thought to make him king H4427 .

23. He wisely placed some of his many sons throughout the regions of Judah and Benjamin in the various fortified cities. He supplied them with abundant provisions and acquired many wives for them.
|
23. And he dealt wisely H995 , and dispersed H6555 of all H4480 H3605 his children H1121 throughout all H3605 the countries H776 of Judah H3063 and Benjamin H1144 , unto every H3605 fenced H4694 city H5892 : and he gave H5414 them victual H4202 in abundance H7230 . And he desired H7592 many H1995 wives H802 .
