Deuteronomy 18:1 (NET) New English Translation

1 The Levitical priests— indeed, the entire tribe of Levi— will have no allotment or inheritance with Israel; they may eat the burnt offerings of the LORD and of his inheritance.
2 They will have no inheritance in the midst of their fellow Israelites; the LORD alone is their inheritance, just as he had told them.
3 This shall be the priests' fair allotment from the people who offer sacrifices, whether bull or sheep— they must give to the priest the shoulder, the jowls, and the stomach.
4 You must give them the best of your grain, new wine, and olive oil, as well as the best of your wool when you shear your flocks.
5 For the LORD your God has chosen them and their sons from all your tribes to stand and serve in his name permanently.
6 Suppose a Levite comes by his own free will from one of your villages, from any part of Israel where he is living, to the place the LORD chooses
7 and serves in the name of the LORD his God like his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.
8 He must eat the same share they do, despite any profits he may gain from the sale of his family's inheritance.
9 When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, you must not learn the abhorrent practices of those nations.
10 There must never be found among you anyone who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, anyone who practices divination, an omen reader, a soothsayer, a sorcerer,
11 one who casts spells, one who conjures up spirits, a practitioner of the occult, or a necromancer.
12 Whoever does these things is abhorrent to the LORD and because of these detestable things the LORD your God is about to drive them out from before you.
13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God.
14 Those nations that you are about to dispossess listen to omen readers and diviners, but the LORD your God has not given you permission to do such things.
15 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you— from your fellow Israelites; you must listen to him.
16 This accords with what happened at Horeb in the day of the assembly. You asked the LORD your God: "Please do not make us hear the voice of the LORD our God any more or see this great fire any more lest we die."
17 The LORD then said to me, "What they have said is good.
18 I will raise up a prophet like you for them from among their fellow Israelites. I will put my words in his mouth and he will speak to them whatever I command.
19 I will personally hold responsible anyone who then pays no attention to the words that prophet speaks in my name.
20 "But if any prophet presumes to speak anything in my name that I have not authorized him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die.
21 Now if you say to yourselves, 'How can we tell that a message is not from the LORD?'—
22 whenever a prophet speaks in my name and the prediction is not fulfilled, then I have not spoken it; the prophet has presumed to speak it, so you need not fear him."

2 Therefore shall they have H1961 VQY3MS no H3808 NADV inheritance H5159 among H7130 their brethren H251 NMP-3MS : the LORD H3068 EDS is their inheritance H5159 , as H834 K-RPRO he hath said H1696 VPQ3MS unto them .
3 And this H2088 W-PMS shall be H1961 VQY3MS the priest H3548 \'s due H4941 CMS from the people H5971 , from them that offer H2076 a sacrifice H2077 , whether H518 PART it be ox H7794 CMS or H518 PART sheep H7716 ; and they shall give H5414 W-VQQ3MS unto the priest H3548 the shoulder H2220 , and the two cheeks H3895 , and the maw H6896 .
4 The firstfruit H7225 CFS also of thy corn H1715 , of thy wine H8492 , and of thine oil H3323 , and the first H7225 of the fleece H1488 of thy sheep H6629 , shalt thou give H5414 VQY2MS him .
5 For H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS hath chosen H977 him out of all H3605 NMS thy tribes H7626 , to stand H5975 to minister H8334 in the name H8034 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , him H1931 PPRO-3MS and his sons H1121 W-CMP-3MS forever H3117 D-NMP .
6 And if H3588 a Levite H3881 come H935 VQY3MS from any H259 of thy gates H8179 out of all H3605 M-CMS Israel H3478 , where H834 RPRO he H1931 PPRO-3MS sojourned H1481 VQPMS , and come H935 with all H3605 B-CMS the desire H185 of his mind H5315 NMS-3MS unto H413 PREP the place H4725 D-NMS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS shall choose H977 ;
7 Then he shall minister H8334 in the name H8034 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS his God H430 CMP-3MS , as all H3605 his brethren H251 NMP-3MS the Levites H3881 do , which stand H5975 there H8033 ADV before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
8 They shall have like portions H2506 CMS to eat H398 , beside H905 that which cometh of the sale H4465 of H5921 PREP his patrimony H1 .
9 When H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS art come H935 VQPMS into H413 PREP the land H776 D-GFS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS giveth H5414 VQPMS thee , thou shalt not H3808 ADV learn H3925 to do H6213 L-VQFC after the abominations H8441 of those H1992 nations H1471 D-NMP .
10 There shall not H3808 ADV be found H4672 among you any one that maketh his son H1121 or his daughter H1323 to pass through H5674 the fire H784 , or that useth H7080 divination H7081 , or an observer of times H6049 , or an enchanter H5172 , or a witch H3784 ,
11 Or a charmer H2266 , or a consulter H7592 with familiar spirits H178 , or a wizard H3049 , or a necromancer H1875 .
12 For H3588 CONJ all H3605 NMS that do H6213 these things H428 PMP are an abomination H8441 unto the LORD H3068 EDS : and because H1558 of these H428 D-DPRO-3MP abominations H8441 the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS doth drive them out H3423 from before H6440 thee .
13 Thou shalt be H1961 VQY2MS perfect H8549 AMS with H5973 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 .
14 For H3588 CONJ these H428 D-DPRO-3MP nations H1471 D-NMP , which H834 RPRO thou H859 PPRO-2MS shalt possess H3423 , hearkened H8085 unto H413 PREP observers of times H6049 , and unto H413 PREP diviners H7080 : but as for thee H859 PPRO-2FS , the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 hath not H3808 NADV suffered H5414 VQQ3MS thee so H3651 ADV to do .
15 The LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS will raise up H6965 unto thee a Prophet H5030 from the midst H7130 of thee , of thy brethren H251 , like unto me H3644 PREP-1MS ; unto H413 PREP-3MS him ye shall hearken H8085 ;
16 According to all H3605 K-NMS that H834 RPRO thou desiredst H7592 of M-PREP the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS in Horeb H2722 in the day H3117 B-NMS of the assembly H6951 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Let me not H3808 NADV hear H8085 again H3254 the voice H6963 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS my God H430 CMP-2MS , neither H3808 ADV let me see H7200 VQY1MS this H2063 D-DFS great H1419 fire H784 any more H5750 ADV , that I die H4191 not H3808 W-NADV .
17 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 me , They have well H3190 spoken that which H834 RPRO they have spoken H1696 .
18 I will raise them up H6965 a Prophet H5030 from among H7130 their brethren H251 , like unto thee H3644 PREP-2MS , and will put H5414 my words H1697 CMP-1MS in his mouth H6310 B-CMS-3MS ; and he shall speak H1696 unto H413 PREP-3MP them all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO I shall command H6680 him .
19 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that whosoever H376 D-NMS will not H3808 ADV hearken H8085 VQY3MS unto H413 PREP my words H1697 CMP-1MS which H834 RPRO he shall speak H1696 VPY3MS in my name H8034 , I H595 PPRO-1MS will require H1875 VQY1MS it of him .
20 But H389 ADV the prophet H5030 , which H834 RPRO shall presume H2102 to speak H1696 a word H1697 VQPMS in my name H8034 , which H834 RPRO I have not H3808 ADV commanded H6680 him to speak H1696 , or that H834 RPRO shall speak H1696 VPY3MS in the name H8034 B-CMS of other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP , even that H1931 prophet H5030 shall die H4191 .
21 And if H3588 W-CONJ thou say H559 VQY2MS in thine heart H3824 , How H349 shall we know H3045 the word H1697 D-NMS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS hath not H3808 NADV spoken H1696 ?
22 When H834 RPRO a prophet H5030 speaketh H1696 VPY3MS in the name H8034 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , if the thing H1697 D-NMS follow H1961 VQY3MS not H3808 W-NPAR , nor H3808 W-NPAR come to pass H935 VQY3MS , that H1931 PPRO-3MS is the thing H1697 D-NMS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS hath not H3808 W-NPAR spoken H1696 , but the prophet H5030 hath spoken H1696 it presumptuously H2087 : thou shalt not H3808 W-NPAR be afraid H1481 of H4480 M-PREP-3MS him .
