Isaiah 40:2 (NET) New English Translation

1 "Comfort, comfort my people," says your God.
2 "Speak kindly to Jerusalem, and tell her that her time of warfare is over, that her punishment is completed. For the LORD has made her pay double for all her sins."
3 A voice cries out, "In the wilderness clear a way for the LORD; construct in the desert a road for our God.
4 Every valley must be elevated, and every mountain and hill leveled. The rough terrain will become a level plain, the rugged landscape a wide valley.
5 The splendor of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it at the same time. For the LORD has decreed it."
6 A voice says, "Cry out!" Another asks, "What should I cry out?" The first voice responds: "All people are like grass, and all their promises are like the flowers in the field.
7 The grass dries up, the flowers wither, when the wind sent by the LORD blows on them. Surely humanity is like grass.
8 The grass dries up, the flowers wither, but the decree of our God is forever reliable."
9 Go up on a high mountain, O herald Zion! Shout out loudly, O herald Jerusalem! Shout, don't be afraid! Say to the towns of Judah, "Here is your God!"
10 Look, the sovereign LORD comes as a victorious warrior; his military power establishes his rule. Look, his reward is with him; his prize goes before him.
11 Like a shepherd he tends his flock; he gathers up the lambs with his arm; he carries them close to his heart; he leads the ewes along.
12 Who has measured out the waters in the hollow of his hand, or carefully measured the sky, or carefully weighed the soil of the earth, or weighed the mountains in a balance, or the hills on scales?
13 Who comprehends the mind of the LORD, or gives him instruction as his counselor?
14 From whom does he receive directions? Who teaches him the correct way to do things, or imparts knowledge to him, or instructs him in skillful design?
15 Look, the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales. He lifts the coastlands as if they were dust.
16 Not even Lebanon could supply enough firewood for a sacrifice; its wild animals would not provide enough burnt offerings.
17 All the nations are insignificant before him; they are regarded as absolutely nothing.
18 To whom can you compare God? To what image can you liken him?
19 A craftsman casts an idol; a metalsmith overlays it with gold and forges silver chains for it.
20 To make a contribution one selects wood that will not rot; he then seeks a skilled craftsman to make an idol that will not fall over.
21 Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told to you since the very beginning? Have you not understood from the time the earth's foundations were made?
22 He is the one who sits on the earth's horizon; its inhabitants are like grasshoppers before him. He is the one who stretches out the sky like a thin curtain, and spreads it out like a pitched tent.
23 He is the one who reduces rulers to nothing; he makes the earth's leaders insignificant.
24 Indeed, they are barely planted; yes, they are barely sown; yes, they barely take root in the earth, and then he blows on them, causing them to dry up, and the wind carries them away like straw.
25 "To whom can you compare me? Whom do I resemble?" says the Holy One.
26 Look up at the sky! Who created all these heavenly lights? He is the one who leads out their ranks; he calls them all by name. Because of his absolute power and awesome strength, not one of them is missing.
27 Why do you say, Jacob, Why do you say, Israel, "The LORD is not aware of what is happening to me, My God is not concerned with my vindication"?
28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is an eternal God, the creator of the whole earth. He does not get tired or weary; there is no limit to his wisdom.
29 He gives strength to those who are tired; to the ones who lack power, he gives renewed energy.
30 Even youths get tired and weary; even strong young men clumsily stumble.
31 But those who wait for the LORD's help find renewed strength; they rise up as if they had eagles' wings, they run without growing weary, they walk without getting tired.

3 The voice H6963 CMS of him that crieth H7121 in the wilderness H4057 , Prepare H6437 ye the way H1870 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , make straight H3474 in the desert H6160 a highway H4546 for our God H430 .
4 Every H3605 NMS valley H1516 shall be exalted H5375 , and every H3605 NMS mountain H2022 CMS and hill H1389 shall be made low H8213 : and the crooked H6121 shall be made H1961 W-VQQ3MS straight H4334 , and the rough places H7406 plain H1237 :
5 And the glory H3519 of the LORD H3068 EDS shall be revealed H1540 , and all H3605 CMS flesh H1320 NMS shall see H7200 it together H3162 ADV-3MS : for H3588 CONJ the mouth H6310 of the LORD H3068 EDS hath spoken H1696 it .
6 The voice H6963 CMS said H559 , Cry H7121 VQI2MP . And he said H559 , What H4100 IGAT shall I cry H7121 ? All H3605 NMS flesh H1320 D-NMS is grass H2682 NMS , and all H3605 NMS the goodliness H2617 thereof is as the flower H6731 K-NMS of the field H7704 D-NMS :
7 The grass H2682 NMS withereth H3001 , the flower H6731 fadeth H5034 : because H3588 CONJ the spirit H7307 NFS of the LORD H3068 EDS bloweth H5380 upon it : surely H403 ADV the people H5971 D-NMS is grass H2682 NMS .
8 The grass H2682 NMS withereth H3001 , the flower H6731 fadeth H5034 : but the word H1697 W-CMS of our God H430 shall stand H6965 VQY3MS forever H5769 .
9 O Zion H6726 , that bringest good tidings H1319 , get thee up H5927 into H5921 PREP the high H1364 mountain H2022 CMS ; O Jerusalem H3389 , that bringest good tidings H1319 , lift up H7311 thy voice H6963 with strength H3581 ; lift it up H7311 , be not afraid H3372 ; say H559 VQI2FS unto the cities H5892 of Judah H3063 , Behold H2009 IJEC your God H430 !
10 Behold H2009 IJEC , the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 will come H935 VQY3MS with strong H2389 hand , and his arm H2220 shall rule H4910 for him : behold H2009 IJEC , his reward H7939 is with H854 PREP-3MS him , and his work H6468 before H6440 him .
11 He shall feed H7462 his flock H5739 like a shepherd H7462 : he shall gather H6908 the lambs H2922 with his arm H2220 , and carry H5375 VQY3MS them in his bosom H2436 , and shall gently lead H5095 those that are with young H5763 .

13 Who H4310 IPRO hath directed H8505 the Spirit H7307 NFS of the LORD H3068 EDS , or being his counselor H6098 hath taught H3045 him ?
14 With whom H4310 IPRO took he counsel H3289 , and who instructed H995 him , and taught H3925 him in the path H734 of judgment H4941 NMS , and taught H3925 him knowledge H1847 NFS , and showed H3045 to him the way H1870 W-NMS of understanding H8394 ?
15 Behold H2005 IJEC , the nations H1471 NMP are as a drop H4752 of a bucket H1805 , and are counted H2803 as the small dust H7834 of the balance H3976 : behold H2005 IJEC , he taketh up H5190 the isles H339 as a very little thing H1851 .
16 And Lebanon H3844 is not H369 NPAR sufficient H1767 to burn H1197 , nor H369 NPAR the beasts H2416 W-CFS-3MS thereof sufficient H1767 for a burnt offering H5930 .
17 All H3605 NMS nations H1471 D-NMP before H5048 PREP-3MS him are as nothing H369 ; and they are counted H2803 VNQ3MP to him less than nothing H657 , and vanity H8414 .
18 To H413 W-PREP whom H4310 IPRO then will ye liken H1819 God H410 EDS ? or what H4100 W-IPRO likeness H1823 will ye compare H6186 unto him ?
19 The workman H2796 melteth H5258 a graven image H6459 , and the goldsmith H6884 spreadeth it over H7554 with gold H2091 , and casteth H6884 silver H3701 NMS chains H7577 .
20 He that is so impoverished H5533 that he hath no oblation H8641 chooseth H977 a tree H6086 NMS that will not H3808 ADV rot H7537 ; he seeketh H1245 unto him a cunning H2450 AMS workman H2796 to prepare H3559 a graven image H6459 , that shall not H3808 NADV be moved H4131 VNY3MS .
21 Have ye not H3808 D-NPAR known H3045 ? have ye not H3808 D-NPAR heard H8085 ? hath it not H3808 D-NPAR been told H5046 you from the beginning H7218 ? have ye not H3808 D-NPAR understood H995 from the foundations H4146 of the earth H776 D-GFS ?
22 It is he that sitteth H3427 D-VQPMS upon H5921 PREP the circle H2329 of the earth H776 D-GFS , and the inhabitants H3427 thereof are as grasshoppers H2284 ; that stretcheth out H5186 the heavens H8064 NMP as a curtain H1852 , and spreadeth them out H4969 as a tent H168 to dwell in H3427 :

24 Yea H637 CONJ , they shall not H1077 ADV be planted H5193 ; yea H637 CONJ , they shall not H1077 ADV be sown H2232 : yea H637 CONJ , their stock H1503 shall not H1077 ADV take root H8327 in the earth H776 B-NFS : and he shall also H1571 W-CONJ blow H5398 upon them , and they shall wither H3001 , and the whirlwind H5591 shall take them away H5375 as stubble H7179 .
25 To H413 W-PREP whom H4310 IPRO then will ye liken H1819 me , or shall I be equal H7737 ? saith H559 VQY3MS the Holy One H6918 AMS .
26 Lift up H5375 your eyes H5869 on high H4791 , and behold H7200 who H4310 IPRO hath created H1254 these H428 PMP things , that bringeth out H3318 their host H6635 by number H4557 : he calleth H7121 VQY3MS them all H3605 by names H8034 B-CMS by the greatness H7230 M-NMS of his might H202 , for that he is strong H533 W-JMS in power H3581 CMS ; not H3808 NADV one H376 NMS faileth H5737 .
27 Why H4100 L-IPRO sayest H559 VQY2MS thou , O Jacob H3290 , and speakest H1696 , O Israel H3478 , My way H1870 is hid H5641 from the LORD H3068 , and my judgment H4941 CMS-1MS is passed over H5674 VQY3MS from my God H430 ?
28 Hast thou not H3808 ADV known H3045 VQQ2MS ? hast thou not H3808 NADV heard H8085 VQQ2MS , that the everlasting H5769 NMS God H430 CDP , the LORD H3068 EDS , the Creator H1254 of the ends H7098 CFP of the earth H776 D-GFS , fainteth H3286 not H3808 NADV , neither H3808 W-NADV is weary H3021 ? there is no H369 NPAR searching H2714 NMS of his understanding H8394 .
29 He giveth H5414 VQPMS power H3581 CMS to the faint H3287 ; and to them that have no H369 might H202 he increaseth H7235 strength H6109 .
30 Even the youths H5288 NMP shall faint H3286 and be weary H3021 , and the young men H970 shall utterly fall H3782 :
31 But they that wait upon H6960 the LORD H3068 EDS shall renew H2498 their strength H3581 NMS ; they shall mount up H5927 with wings H83 as eagles H5404 ; they shall run H7323 VQY3MP , and not H3808 W-NPAR be weary H3021 ; and they shall walk H1980 , and not H3808 W-NPAR faint H3286 .
