1. Then he brought me back by way of the outer gate of the sanctuary which faces east, but it was shut.

2. The LORD said to me: "This gate will be shut; it will not be opened, and no one will enter by it. For the LORD, the God of Israel, has entered by it; therefore it will remain shut.
|
2. Then said H559 the LORD H3068 unto H413 me; This H2088 gate H8179 shall be H1961 shut H5462 , it shall not H3808 be opened H6605 , and no H3808 man H376 shall enter in H935 by it; because H3588 the LORD H3068 , the God H430 of Israel H3478 , hath entered in H935 by it , therefore it shall be H1961 shut H5462 .

3. Only the prince may sit in it to eat a sacrificial meal before the LORD; he will enter by way of the porch of the gate and will go out by the same way."

4. Then he brought me by way of the north gate to the front of the temple. As I watched, I noticed the glory of the LORD filling the LORD's temple, and I threw myself face down.

5. The LORD said to me: "Son of man, pay attention, watch closely and listen carefully to everything I tell you concerning all the statutes of the LORD's house and all its laws. Pay attention to the entrances to the temple with all the exits of the sanctuary.

6. Say to the rebellious, to the house of Israel, 'This is what the sovereign LORD says: Enough of all your abominable practices, O house of Israel!

7. When you bring foreigners, those uncircumcised in heart and in flesh, into my sanctuary, you desecrate it� even my house� when you offer my food, the fat and the blood. You have broken my covenant by all your abominable practices.

In that ye have brought H935 into my sanctuary strangers H1121 H5236 , uncircumcised H6189 in heart H3820 , and uncircumcised H6189 in flesh H1320 , to be H1961 in my sanctuary H4720 , to pollute H2490 it, even H853 my house H1004 , when ye offer H7126 H853 my bread H3899 , the fat H2459 and the blood H1818 , and they have broken H6565 H853 my covenant H1285 because of H413 all H3605 your abominations H8441 .

8. You have not kept charge of my holy things, but you have assigned foreigners to keep charge of my sanctuary for you.
|
8. And ye have not H3808 kept H8104 the charge H4931 of mine holy things H6944 : but ye have set H7760 keepers H8104 of my charge H4931 in my sanctuary H4720 for yourselves.

|
9. This is what the sovereign LORD says: No foreigner, who is uncircumcised in heart and flesh among all the foreigners who are among the people of Israel, will enter into my sanctuary.
|
9. Thus H3541 saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD H3069 ; No H3808 H3605 stranger H1121 H5236 , uncircumcised H6189 in heart H3820 , nor uncircumcised H6189 in flesh H1320 , shall enter H935 into H413 my sanctuary H4720 , of any H3605 stranger H1121 H5236 that H834 is among H8432 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 .

10. "'But the Levites who went far from me, straying off from me after their idols when Israel went astray, will be responsible for their sin.
|
10. And H3588 H518 the Levites H3881 that H834 are gone away far H7368 from H4480 H5921 me , when Israel H3478 went astray H8582 , which H834 went astray H8582 away from H4480 H5921 me after H310 their idols H1544 ; they shall even bear H5375 their iniquity H5771 .

11. Yet they will be ministers in my sanctuary, having oversight at the gates of the temple, and serving the temple. They will slaughter the burnt offerings and the sacrifices for the people, and they will stand before them to minister to them.
|
11. Yet they shall be H1961 ministers H8334 in my sanctuary H4720 , having charge H6486 at H413 the gates H8179 of the house H1004 , and ministering H8334 H853 to the house H1004 : they H1992 shall slay H7819 H853 the burnt offering H5930 and the sacrifice H2077 for the people H5971 , and they H1992 shall stand H5975 before H6440 them to minister H8334 unto them.

12. Because they used to minister to them before their idols, and became a sinful obstacle to the house of Israel, consequently I have made a vow concerning them, declares the sovereign LORD, that they will be responsible for their sin.
|
12. 13. They will not come near me to serve me as priest, nor will they come near any of my holy things, the things which are most sacred. They will bear the shame of the abominable deeds they have committed.

And they shall not H3808 come near H5066 unto H413 me , to do the office of a priest H3547 unto me , nor to come near H5066 to H5921 any H3605 of my holy things H6944 , in H413 the most holy H6944 H6944 place : but they shall bear H5375 their shame H3639 , and their abominations H8441 which H834 they have committed H6213 .

14. Yet I will appoint them to keep charge of the temple, all of its service and all that will be done in it.
|

15. "'But the Levitical priests, the descendants of Zadok who kept the charge of my sanctuary when the people of Israel went astray from me, will approach me to minister to me; they will stand before me to offer me the fat and the blood, declares the sovereign LORD.
|
15. 16. They will enter my sanctuary, and approach my table to minister to me; they will keep my charge.
|

17. "'When they enter the gates of the inner court, they must wear linen garments; they must not have any wool on them when they minister in the inner gates of the court and in the temple.
|

And it shall come to pass H1961 , that when they enter in H935 at H413 the gates H8179 of the inner H6442 court H2691 , they shall be clothed with H3847 linen H6593 garments H899 ; and no H3808 wool H6785 shall come H5927 upon H5921 them , while they minister H8334 in the gates H8179 of the inner H6442 court H2691 , and within H1004 .

18. Linen turbans will be on their heads and linen undergarments will be around their waists; they must not bind themselves with anything that causes sweat.
|
18. They shall have H1961 linen H6593 bonnets H6287 upon H5921 their heads H7218 , and shall have H1961 linen H6593 breeches H4370 upon H5921 their loins H4975 ; they shall not H3808 gird H2296 themselves with any thing that causeth sweat H3154 .

19. When they go out to the outer court to the people, they must remove the garments they were ministering in, and place them in the holy chambers; they must put on other garments so that they will not transmit holiness to the people with their garments.
|

20. "'They must not shave their heads nor let their hair grow long; they must only trim their heads.
|

21. No priest may drink wine when he enters the inner court.
|
21. Neither H3808 shall any H3605 priest H3548 drink H8354 wine H3196 , when they enter H935 into H413 the inner H6442 court H2691 .
|
|
22. They must not marry a widow or a divorcee, but they may marry a virgin from the house of Israel or a widow who is a priest's widow.
|
22. Neither H3808 shall they take H3947 for their wives H802 a widow H490 , nor her that is put away H1644 : but H3588 H518 they shall take H3947 maidens H1330 of the seed H4480 H2233 of the house H1004 of Israel H3478 , or a widow H490 that H834 had H1961 a priest H4480 H3548 before.

23. Moreover, they will teach my people the difference between the holy and the common, and show them how to distinguish between the ceremonially unclean and the clean.
|
23. And they shall teach H3384 my people H5971 the difference between H996 the holy H6944 and profane H2455 , and cause them to discern H3045 between H996 the unclean H2931 and the clean H2889 .
|
|
24. "'In a controversy they will act as judges; they will judge according to my ordinances. They will keep my laws and my statutes regarding all my appointed festivals and will observe my Sabbaths.
|
24. And in H5921 controversy H7379 they H1992 shall stand H5975 in judgment H8199 ; and they shall judge H8199 it according to my judgments H4941 : and they shall keep H8104 my laws H8451 and my statutes H2708 in all H3605 mine assemblies H4150 ; and they shall hallow H6942 my sabbaths H7676 .

25. "'They must not come near a dead person or they will be defiled; however, for father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister, they may defile themselves.
|
25. And they shall come H935 at H413 no H3808 dead H4191 person H120 to defile H2930 themselves: but H3588 H518 for father H1 , or for mother H517 , or for son H1121 , or for daughter H1323 , for brother H251 , or for sister H269 that H834 hath had H1961 no H3808 husband H376 , they may defile themselves H2930 .

26. After a priest has become ceremonially clean, they must count off a period of seven days for him.
|

|
27. On the day he enters the sanctuary, into the inner court to serve in the sanctuary, he must offer his sin offering, declares the sovereign LORD.
|
27. And in the day H3117 that he goeth H935 into H413 the sanctuary H6944 , unto H413 the inner H6442 court H2691 , to minister H8334 in the sanctuary H6944 , he shall offer H7126 his sin offering H2403 , saith H5002 the Lord H136 GOD H3069 .

28. "'This will be their inheritance: I am their inheritance, and you must give them no property in Israel; I am their property.
|
28. And it shall be H1961 unto them for an inheritance H5159 : I H589 am their inheritance H5159 : and ye shall give H5414 them no H3808 possession H272 in Israel H3478 : I H589 am their possession H272 .

29. They may eat the grain offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering, and every devoted thing in Israel will be theirs.
|

30. The first of all the first fruits and all contributions of any kind will be for the priests; you will also give to the priest the first portion of your dough, so that a blessing may rest on your house.
|

31. The priests will not eat any bird or animal that has died a natural death or was torn to pieces by a wild animal.
|
31. The priests H3548 shall not H3808 eat H398 of any thing H3605 that is dead of itself H5038 , or torn H2966 , whether H4480 it be fowl H5775 or H4480 beast H929 .
