1 At the end of two full years Pharaoh had a dream. As he was standing by the Nile,

2 seven fine-looking, fat cows were coming up out of the Nile, and they grazed in the reeds.

3 Then seven bad-looking, thin cows were coming up after them from the Nile, and they stood beside the other cows at the edge of the river.

4 The bad-looking, thin cows ate the seven fine-looking, fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.

5 Then he fell asleep again and had a second dream: There were seven heads of grain growing on one stalk, healthy and good.

6 Then seven heads of grain, thin and burned by the east wind, were sprouting up after them.

7 The thin heads swallowed up the seven healthy and full heads. Then Pharaoh woke up and realized it was a dream.

8 In the morning he was troubled, so he called for all the diviner-priests of Egypt and all its wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.

9 Then the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, "Today I recall my failures.

10 Pharaoh was enraged with his servants, and he put me in prison in the house of the captain of the guards— me and the chief baker.

11 We each had a dream one night; each of us had a dream with its own meaning.

12 Now a young man, a Hebrew, a servant of the captain of the guards, was with us there. We told him our dreams, and he interpreted the meaning of each of our respective dreams for us.

13 It happened just as he had said to us— Pharaoh restored me to my office, but he impaled the baker."

14 Then Pharaoh summoned Joseph. So they brought him quickly out of the dungeon; he shaved himself, changed his clothes, and came before Pharaoh.

15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. But I have heard about you, that you can interpret dreams."

16 Joseph replied to Pharaoh, "It is not within my power, but God will speak concerning the welfare of Pharaoh."

17 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "In my dream I was standing by the edge of the Nile.

18 Then seven fat and fine-looking cows were coming up out of the Nile, and they grazed in the reeds.

19 Then seven other cows came up after them; they were scrawny, very bad-looking, and lean. I had never seen such bad-looking cows as these in all the land of Egypt!

20 The lean, bad-looking cows ate up the seven fat cows.

21 When they had eaten them, no one would have known that they had done so, for they were just as bad-looking as before. Then I woke up.

22 I also saw in my dream seven heads of grain growing on one stalk, full and good.

23 Then seven heads of grain, withered and thin and burned with the east wind, were sprouting up after them.

24 The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven good heads of grain. So I told all this to the diviner-priests, but no one could tell me its meaning."

25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, "Both dreams of Pharaoh have the same meaning. God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do.

26 The seven good cows represent seven years, and the seven good heads of grain represent seven years. Both dreams have the same meaning.

27 The seven lean, bad-looking cows that came up after them represent seven years, as do the seven empty heads of grain burned with the east wind. They represent seven years of famine.

28 This is just what I told Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do.

29 Seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the whole land of Egypt.

30 But seven years of famine will occur after them, and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. The famine will devastate the land.

31 The previous abundance of the land will not be remembered because of the famine that follows, for the famine will be very severe.

32 The dream was repeated to Pharaoh because the matter has been decreed by God, and God will make it happen soon.

33 "So now Pharaoh should look for a wise and discerning man and give him authority over all the land of Egypt.

34 Pharaoh should do this— he should appoint officials throughout the land to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.

35 They should gather all the excess food during these good years that are coming. By Pharaoh's authority they should store up grain so the cities will have food, and they should preserve it.

36 This food should be held in storage for the land in preparation for the seven years of famine that will occur throughout the land of Egypt. In this way the land will survive the famine."

37 This advice made sense to Pharaoh and all his officials.

38 So Pharaoh asked his officials, "Can we find a man like Joseph, one in whom the Spirit of God is present?"

39 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Because God has enabled you to know all this, there is no one as wise and discerning as you are!

40 You will oversee my household, and all my people will submit to your commands. Only I, the king, will be greater than you.

41 "See here," Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I place you in authority over all the land of Egypt."

42 Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his own hand and put it on Joseph's. He clothed him with fine linen clothes and put a gold chain around his neck.

43 Pharaoh had him ride in the chariot used by his second-in-command, and they cried out before him, "Kneel down!" So he placed him over all the land of Egypt.

44 Pharaoh also said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, but without your permission no one will move his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt."

45 Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-Paneah. He also gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife. So Joseph took charge of all the land of Egypt.

46 Now Joseph was 30 years old when he began serving Pharaoh king of Egypt. Joseph was commissioned by Pharaoh and was in charge of all the land of Egypt.

47 During the seven years of abundance the land produced large, bountiful harvests.

48 Joseph collected all the excess food in the land of Egypt during the seven years and stored it in the cities. In every city he put the food gathered from the fields around it.

49 Joseph stored up a vast amount of grain, like the sand of the sea, until he stopped measuring it because it was impossible to measure.

50 Two sons were born to Joseph before the famine came. Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, was their mother.

51 Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh, saying, "Certainly God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father's house."

52 He named the second child Ephraim, saying, "Certainly God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering."

53 The seven years of abundance in the land of Egypt came to an end.

54 Then the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had predicted. There was famine in all the other lands, but throughout the land of Egypt there was food.

55 When all the land of Egypt experienced the famine, the people cried out to Pharaoh for food. Pharaoh said to all the people of Egypt, "Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you."

56 While the famine was over all the earth, Joseph opened the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians. The famine was severe throughout the land of Egypt.

57 People from every country came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain because the famine was severe throughout the earth.

3 And , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , seven ^H7651 ^MFS other ^H312 kine ^H6510 came up ^H5927 after ^H310 them out of ^H4480 ^PREP the river ^H2975 , ill ^H7451 favored ^H4758 ^NMS and leanfleshed ^H1851 ; and stood ^H5975 by ^H681 the other kine ^H6510 upon ^H5921 ^PREP the brink ^H8193 ^CFS of the river ^H2975 .

4 And the ill ^H7451 favored ^H4758 and leanfleshed ^H1851 kine ^H6510 did eat up ^H398 the seven ^H7651 ^MFS well ^H3303 favored ^H4758 and fat ^H1277 kine ^H6510 . So Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS awoke ^H3364 .

5 And he slept ^H3462 ^W-VQY3MS and dreamed ^H2492 the second time ^H8145 ^CFS : and , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , seven ^H7651 ^MFS ears of corn ^H7641 came up ^H5927 upon one ^H259 ^MMS stalk ^H7070 , rank ^H1277 and good ^H2896 .

6 And , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , seven ^H7651 ^MFS thin ^H1851 ears ^H7641 and blasted ^H7710 with the east wind ^H6921 ^NMP sprung up ^H6779 after ^H310 them .

7 And the seven thin ^H1851 ears ^H7641 devoured ^H1104 the seven ^H7651 ^MFS rank ^H1277 and full ^H4392 ears ^H7641 . And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS awoke ^H3364 , and , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , it was a dream ^H2472 .

9 Then spoke ^H1696 ^W-VPY3MS the chief ^H8269 butler ^H4945 unto Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS do remember ^H2142 my faults ^H2399 this day ^H3117 ^D-NMS :

10 Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS was wroth ^H7107 with ^H5921 ^PREP his servants ^H5650 , and put ^H5414 ^W-VQQ3MS me in ward ^H4929 in the captain ^H8269 of the guard ^H2876 \'s house ^H1004 ^CMS , both me and the chief ^H8269 baker ^H644 :

11 And we dreamed ^H2492 a dream ^H2472 in one ^H259 ^MMS night ^H3915 , I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS and he ^H1931 ; we dreamed ^H2492 each man ^H376 ^NMS according to the interpretation ^H6623 of his dream ^H2472 .

12 And there was there ^H8033 ^W-ADV with ^H854 ^PREP-1MP us a young man ^H5288 , a Hebrew ^H5680 ^TMS , servant ^H5650 ^NMS to the captain ^H8269 of the guard ^H2876 ; and we told ^H5608 him , and he interpreted ^H6622 to us our dreams ^H2472 ; to each man ^H376 according to his dream ^H2472 he did interpret ^H6622 .

13 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS , as ^H834 ^K-RPRO he interpreted ^H6622 to us , so ^H3651 ^ADV it was ^H1961 ^VQQ3MS ; me he restored ^H7725 ^VHQ3MS unto ^H5921 ^PREP mine office ^H3653 , and him he hanged ^H8518 .

14 Then Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS sent ^H7971 ^W-VQY3MS and called ^H7121 ^W-VQY3MS Joseph ^H3130 , and they brought him hastily ^H7323 out of ^H4480 ^PREP the dungeon ^H953 : and he shaved ^H1548 himself , and changed ^H2498 his raiment ^H8071 , and came in ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS .

15 And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Joseph ^H3130 , I have dreamed ^H2492 a dream ^H2472 , and there is none ^H369 ^NPAR that can interpret ^H6622 it : and I ^H589 ^W-PPRO-1MS have heard ^H8085 ^VQQ1MS say ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS of ^H5921 ^PREP-2MS thee , that thou canst understand ^H8085 ^VQQ1MS a dream ^H2472 to interpret ^H6622 it .

16 And Joseph ^H3130 answered ^H6030 ^W-VQY3MS Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , It is not in ^H1107 me : God ^H430 ^EDP shall give Pharaoh an answer ^H6030 ^VQY3MS of peace ^H7965 .

17 And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS said ^H1696 ^W-VPY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Joseph ^H3130 , In my dream ^H2472 , behold ^H2009 , I stood ^H5975 upon ^H5921 ^PREP the bank ^H8193 ^CFS of the river ^H2975 :

18 And , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , there came up ^H5927 out of ^H4480 ^PREP the river ^H2975 seven ^H7651 ^MFS kine ^H6510 , fatfleshed ^H1277 and well ^H3303 favored ^H8389 ; and they fed ^H7462 in a meadow ^H260 :

19 And , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , seven ^H7651 other ^H312 kine ^H6510 came up ^H5927 after ^H310 them , poor ^H1800 and very ^H3966 ^ADV ill ^H7451 favored ^H8389 and leanfleshed ^H7534 , such ^H2007 as I never ^H3808 ^ADV saw ^H7200 ^VQQ1MS in all ^H3605 ^B-CMS the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS for badness ^H7455 :

20 And the lean ^H7534 and the ill favored ^H7451 kine ^H6510 did eat up ^H398 the first ^H7223 seven ^H7651 ^MFS fat ^H1277 kine ^H6510 :

21 And when they had eaten them up ^H935 ^VQQ3MP , it could not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR be known ^H3045 that ^H3588 ^CONJ they had eaten ^H935 ^VQQ3MP them ; but they were still ill favored ^H4758 , as ^H834 ^K-RPRO at the beginning ^H8462 ^BD-NFS . So I awoke ^H3364 .

22 And I saw ^H7200 in my dream ^H2472 , and , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , seven ^H7651 ^MFS ears ^H7641 came up ^H5927 in one ^H259 ^MMS stalk ^H7070 , full ^H4392 and good ^H2896 :

23 And , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , seven ^H7651 ^MFS ears ^H7641 , withered ^H6798 , thin ^H1851 , and blasted ^H7710 with the east wind ^H6921 ^NMP , sprung up ^H6779 after ^H310 them :

24 And the thin ^H1851 ears ^H7641 devoured ^H1104 the seven ^H7651 ^MFS good ^H2896 ears ^H7641 : and I told ^H559 this unto ^H413 ^PREP the magicians ^H2748 ; but there was none ^H369 ^W-NPAR that could declare ^H5046 ^VHPMS it to me .

25 And Joseph ^H3130 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , The dream ^H2472 of Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS is one ^H259 ^MMS : God ^H430 ^D-EDP hath showed ^H5046 ^VHQ3MS Pharaoh ^H6547 what ^H834 ^RPRO he is about to do ^H6213 ^VQPMS .

26 The seven ^H7651 ^MFS good ^H2896 kine ^H6510 are seven ^H7651 ^MFS years ^H8141 ^NFP ; and the seven ^H7651 good ^H2896 ears ^H7641 are seven ^H7651 ^MFS years ^H8141 ^NFP : the dream ^H2472 is one ^H259 ^MMS .

27 And the seven ^H7651 thin ^H7534 and ill favored ^H7451 kine ^H6510 that came up ^H5927 after ^H310 them are seven ^H7651 ^MFS years ^H8141 ^NFP ; and the seven ^H7651 empty ^H7386 ears ^H7641 blasted ^H7710 with the east wind ^H6921 shall be ^H1961 ^VQY3MP seven ^H7651 ^MFS years ^H8141 of famine ^H7458 .

28 This ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS is the thing ^H1697 ^D-NMS which ^H834 ^RPRO I have spoken ^H1696 ^VPQ1MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS : What ^H834 ^RPRO God ^H430 ^D-EDP is about to do ^H6213 ^VQPMS he showeth ^H7200 unto Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS .

29 Behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , there come ^H935 seven ^H7651 ^MFS years ^H8141 ^NFP of great ^H1419 ^AMS plenty ^H7647 throughout all ^H3605 ^B-CMS the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 :

30 And there shall arise ^H6965 after ^H310 them seven ^H7651 ^MFS years ^H8141 of famine ^H7458 ^NMS ; and all ^H3605 ^NMS the plenty ^H7647 shall be forgotten ^H7911 in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Egypt ^H4714 ; and the famine ^H7458 ^D-NMS shall consume ^H3615 the land ^H776 ^D-GFS ;

31 And the plenty ^H7647 shall not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR be known ^H3045 in the land ^H776 ^B-NFS by reason of ^M-CMP that ^H1931 ^D-PPRO-3MS famine ^H7458 ^D-NMS following ^H310 ^PREP ; for ^H3588 ^CONJ it ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS shall be very ^H3966 ^ADV grievous ^H3515 ^AMS .

32 And for ^H5921 ^W-PREP that the dream ^H2472 was doubled ^H8138 unto ^H413 ^PREP Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS twice ^H6471 ; it is because ^H3588 ^CONJ the thing ^H1697 ^D-NMS is established ^H3559 ^NMS by ^M-PREP God ^H430 ^D-EDP , and God ^H430 ^D-EDP will shortly ^H4116 bring it to pass ^H6213 .

33 Now ^H6258 ^W-ADV therefore let Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS look out ^H7200 ^VQI3MS a man ^H376 ^NMS discreet ^H995 and wise ^H2450 , and set ^H7896 him over ^H5921 ^PREP the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 .

34 Let Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS do ^H6213 ^VQY3MS this , and let him appoint ^H6485 officers ^H6496 over ^H5921 ^PREP the land ^H776 ^D-GFS , and take up the fifth part ^H2567 of the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS in the seven ^H7651 plenteous ^H7647 years ^H8141 .

35 And let them gather ^H6908 all ^H3605 ^NMS the food ^H400 ^NMS of those ^H428 ^D-DPRO-3MP good ^H2896 years ^H8141 that come ^H935 , and lay up ^H6651 corn ^H1250 under ^H8478 ^NMS the hand ^H3027 ^CFS of Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , and let them keep ^H8104 food ^H400 ^NMS in the cities ^H5892 .

36 And that food ^H400 shall be ^H1961 ^W-VQQ3MS for store ^H6487 to the land ^H776 ^LD-NFS against the seven ^H7651 years ^H8141 of famine ^H7458 ^D-NMS , which ^H834 ^RPRO shall be ^H1961 ^W-VQQ3MS in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Egypt ^H4714 ; that the land ^H776 ^D-GFS perish ^H3772 not ^H3808 ^W-NPAR through the famine ^H7458 .

37 And the thing ^H1697 ^D-NMS was good ^H3190 in the eyes ^H5869 ^B-CMP of Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , and in the eyes ^H5869 of all ^H3605 ^NMS his servants ^H5650 .

38 And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP his servants ^H5650 , Can we find ^H4672 such a one as this ^H2088 is , a man ^H376 ^NMS in whom ^H834 ^RPRO the Spirit ^H7307 ^NFS of God ^H430 ^EDP is ?

39 And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Joseph ^H3130 , Forasmuch ^H310 ^PREP as God ^H430 ^EDP hath showed ^H3045 thee all ^H3605 ^NMS this ^H2063 ^DPRO , there is none ^H369 ^NPAR so discreet ^H995 and wise ^H2450 as thou ^H3644 art :

40 Thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS shalt be ^H1961 ^VQY3FS over ^H5921 ^PREP my house ^H1004 ^CMS-1MS , and according unto ^H5921 ^PREP thy word ^H6310 ^CMS-2MS shall all ^H3605 ^NMS my people ^H5971 be ruled ^H5401 : only ^H7535 ^ADV in the throne ^H3678 will I be greater ^H1431 than ^H4480 ^M-PPRO-2MS thou .

41 And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Joseph ^H3130 , See ^H7200 ^VQI2MS , I have set ^H5414 ^VQQ1MS thee over ^H5921 ^PREP all ^H3605 ^NMS the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 .

42 And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS took off ^H5493 ^W-VHY3MS his ring ^H2885 from ^M-PREP his hand ^H3027 ^CFS-3MS , and put ^H5414 ^W-VQQ3MS it upon ^H5921 ^M-PREP Joseph ^H3130 \'s hand ^H3027 ^CFS , and arrayed ^H3847 him in vestures ^H899 of fine linen ^H8336 , and put ^H7760 ^W-VQY3MS a gold ^H2091 chain ^H7242 about ^H5921 ^M-PREP his neck ^H6677 ;

43 And he made him to ride ^H7392 in the second ^H4932 chariot ^H4818 which ^H834 ^RPRO he had ; and they cried ^H7121 ^W-VQY3MP before ^H6440 ^L-CMP-3MS him , Bow the knee ^H86 : and he made ^H5414 him ruler over ^H5921 ^PREP all ^H3605 ^NMS the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 .

44 And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP Joseph ^H3130 , I ^H589 ^PPRO-1MS am Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , and without ^H1107 thee shall no ^H3808 ^ADV man ^H376 ^NMS lift up ^H7311 ^VHY3MS his hand ^H3027 ^CFS-3MS or foot ^H7272 ^CFS-3MS in all ^H3605 ^B-CMS the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 .

45 And Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS called ^H7121 ^W-VQY3MS Joseph ^H3130 \'s name ^H8034 ^CMS Zaphnath ^H6847 - paaneah ; and he gave ^H5414 ^W-VQY3MS him to wife ^H802 ^L-NFS Asenath ^H621 the daughter ^H1323 ^CFS of Poti ^H6319 - pherah priest ^H3548 of On ^H204 . And Joseph ^H3130 went out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MS over ^H5921 ^PREP all the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 .

46 And Joseph ^H3130 was thirty ^H7970 ^MMP years ^H8141 ^NFS old ^H1121 when he stood ^H5975 before ^H6440 ^L-CMP Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS king ^H4428 ^NMS of Egypt ^H4714 . And Joseph ^H3130 went out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MS from the presence ^H6440 ^L-CMP of Pharaoh ^H6547 ^EMS , and went ^H5674 throughout all ^H3605 ^B-CMS the land ^H776 ^GFS of Egypt ^H4714 .

47 And in the seven ^H7651 plenteous ^H7647 years ^H8141 the earth ^H776 ^D-GFS brought forth ^H6213 by handfuls ^H7062 .

48 And he gathered up ^H6908 all ^H3605 ^NMS the food ^H400 ^NMS of the seven ^H7651 ^MFS years ^H8141 ^NFP , which ^H834 ^RPRO were ^H1961 ^VQQ3MP in the land ^H776 ^B-GFS of Egypt ^H4714 ^EFS , and laid up ^H5414 ^W-VQY3MS the food ^H400 ^NMS in the cities ^H5892 : the food ^H400 ^NMS of the field ^H7704 ^CMS , which ^H834 ^RPRO was round about ^H5439 every city ^H5892 ^D-GFS , laid he up ^H5414 ^VQQ3MS in the same ^H8432 .
