Jeremiah 2:9 (NET) New English Translation

1 The LORD spoke to me. He said:
2 "Go and declare in the hearing of the people of Jerusalem: 'This is what the LORD says: "I have fond memories of you, how devoted you were to me in your early years. I remember how you loved me like a new bride; you followed me through the wilderness, through a land that had never been planted.
3 Israel was set apart to the LORD; they were like the first fruits of a harvest to him. All who tried to devour them were punished; disaster came upon them," says the LORD.'"
4 Now listen to what the Lord has to say, you descendants of Jacob, all you family groups from the nation of Israel.
5 This is what the Lord says: "What fault could your ancestors have possibly found in me that they strayed so far from me? They paid allegiance to worthless idols, and so became worthless to me.
6 They did not ask: 'Where is the LORD who delivered us out of Egypt, who brought us through the wilderness, through a land of desert sands and rift valleys, through a land of drought and deep darkness, through a land in which no one travels, and where no one lives?'
7 I brought you into a fertile land so you could enjoy its fruits and its rich bounty. But when you entered my land, you defiled it; you made the land I call my own loathsome to me.
8 Your priests did not ask, 'Where is the LORD?' Those responsible for teaching my law did not really know me. Your rulers rebelled against me. Your prophets prophesied in the name of the god Baal. They all worshiped idols that could not help them.
9 "So, once more I will state my case against you," says the LORD. "I will also state it against your children and grandchildren.
10 Go west across the sea to the coasts of Cyprus and see. Send someone east to Kedar and have them look carefully. See if such a thing as this has ever happened:
11 Has a nation ever changed its gods (even though they are not really gods at all)? But my people have exchanged me, their glorious God, for a god that cannot help them at all!
12 Be amazed at this, O heavens! Be shocked and utterly dumbfounded," says the LORD.
13 "Do so because my people have committed a double wrong: they have rejected me, the fountain of life-giving water, and they have dug cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns which cannot even hold water."
14 "Israel is not a slave, is he? He was not born into slavery, was he? If not, why then is he being carried off?
15 Like lions his enemies roar victoriously over him; they raise their voices in triumph. They have laid his land waste; his cities have been burned down and deserted.
16 Even the soldiers from Memphis and Tahpanhes have cracked your skulls, people of Israel.
17 You have brought all this on yourself, Israel, by deserting the LORD your God when he was leading you along the right path.
18 What good will it do you then to go down to Egypt to seek help from the Egyptians? What good will it do you to go over to Assyria to seek help from the Assyrians?
19 Your own wickedness will bring about your punishment. Your unfaithful acts will bring down discipline on you. Know, then, and realize how utterly harmful it was for you to reject me, the LORD your God, to show no respect for me," says the Lord GOD who rules over all.
20 "Indeed, long ago you threw off my authority and refused to be subject to me. You said, 'I will not serve you.' Instead, you gave yourself to other gods on every high hill and under every green tree, like a prostitute sprawls out before her lovers.
21 I planted you in the land like a special vine of the very best stock. Why in the world have you turned into something like a wild vine that produces rotten, foul-smelling grapes?
22 You can try to wash away your guilt with a strong detergent. You can use as much soap as you want. But the stain of your guilt is still there for me to see," says the Lord GOD.
23 "How can you say, 'I have not made myself unclean. I have not paid allegiance to the gods called Baal.' Just look at the way you have behaved in the Valley of Hinnom! Think about the things you have done there! You are like a flighty, young female camel that rushes here and there, crisscrossing its path.
24 You are like a wild female donkey brought up in the wilderness. In her lust she sniffs the wind to get the scent of a male. No one can hold her back when she is in heat. None of the males need wear themselves out chasing after her. At mating time she is easy to find.
25 Do not chase after other gods until your shoes wear out and your throats become dry. But you say, 'It is useless for you to try and stop me because I love those foreign gods and want to pursue them!'
26 Just as a thief has to suffer dishonor when he is caught, so the people of Israel will suffer dishonor for what they have done. So will their kings and officials, their priests and their prophets.
27 They say to a wooden idol, 'You are my father.' They say to a stone image, 'You gave birth to me.' Yes, they have turned away from me instead of turning to me. Yet when they are in trouble, they say, 'Come and save us!'
28 But where are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them save you when you are in trouble. The sad fact is that you have as many gods as you have towns, Judah.
29 "Why do you try to refute me? All of you have rebelled against me," says the LORD.
30 "It did no good for me to punish your people. They did not respond to such correction. You slaughtered your prophets like a voracious lion."
31 You people of this generation, listen to what the LORD says. "Have I been like a wilderness to you, Israel? Have I been like a dark and dangerous land to you? Why then do you say, 'We are free to wander. We will not come to you any more?'
32 Does a young woman forget to put on her jewels? Does a bride forget to put on her bridal attire? But my people have forgotten me for more days than can even be counted.
33 "My, how good you have become at chasing after your lovers! Why, you could even teach prostitutes a thing or two!
34 Even your clothes are stained with the lifeblood of the poor who had not done anything wrong; you did not catch them breaking into your homes. Yet, in spite of all these things you have done,
35 you say, 'I have not done anything wrong, so the LORD cannot really be angry with me any more.' But, watch out! I will bring down judgment on you because you say, 'I have not committed any sin.'
36 Why do you constantly go about changing your political allegiances? You will get no help from Egypt just as you got no help from Assyria.
37 Moreover, you will come away from Egypt with your hands covering your faces in sorrow and shame because the LORD will not allow your reliance on them to be successful and you will not gain any help from them.

3 Israel H3478 was holiness H6944 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , and the firstfruits H7225 CFS of his increase H8393 : all H3605 NMS that devour H398 him shall offend H816 ; evil H7451 AFS shall come H935 VQY2MS upon H413 PREP-3MP them , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
4 Hear H8085 VQI2MP ye the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , O house H1004 CMS of Jacob H3290 , and all H3605 the families H4940 CFP of the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 LMS :
5 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , What H4100 IPRO iniquity H5766 NMS have your fathers H1 found H4672 in me , that H3588 CONJ they are gone far H7368 VQQ3MP from M-PREP-1MS me , and have walked H1980 W-VQY3MP after H310 PREP vanity H1892 , and are become vain H1891 ?
6 Neither H3808 W-NPAR said H559 VQQ3MP they , Where H346 IGAT is the LORD H3068 EDS that brought us up H5927 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 , that led H1980 us through the wilderness H4057 , through a land H776 B-GFS of deserts H6160 NFS and of pits H7745 , through a land H776 B-GFS of drought H6723 NFS , and of the shadow of death H6757 W-NMS , through a land H776 B-GFS that no H3808 W-NPAR man H376 NMS passed through H5674 VQQ3MS , and where H8033 ADV no H3808 W-NPAR man H120 NMS dwelt H3427 VQQ3MS ?
7 And I brought H935 you into H413 PREP a plentiful H3759 country H776 GFS , to eat H398 L-VQFC the fruit H6529 thereof and the goodness H2898 thereof ; but when ye entered H935 , ye defiled H2930 my land H776 , and made H7760 mine heritage H5159 an abomination H8441 .
8 The priests H3548 said H559 not H3808 NADV , Where H346 IGAT is the LORD H3068 EDS ? and they that handle H8610 the law H8451 knew H3045 me not H3808 NADV : the pastors H7462 also transgressed H6586 against me , and the prophets H5030 prophesied H5012 by Baal H1168 , and walked H1980 after H310 things that do not H3808 ADV profit H3276 .
9 Wherefore H3651 L-ADV I will yet H5750 ADV plead H7378 with H854 PART-2MP you , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , and with H854 W-PART your children H1121 \'s children H1121 will I plead H7378 .
10 For H3588 CONJ pass over H5674 the isles H339 CMP of Chittim H3794 , and see H7200 ; and send H7971 unto Kedar H6938 , and consider H995 diligently H3966 ADV , and see H7200 if there be H1961 VQQ3FS such H2063 a thing .
11 Hath a nation H1471 NMS changed H4171 their gods H430 EDP , which H1992 are yet no H3808 NADV gods H430 EDP ? but my people H5971 have changed H4171 their glory H3519 for that which doth not H3808 NADV profit H3276 .
12 Be astonished H8074 , O ye heavens H8064 NMP , at H5921 PREP this H2063 DPRO , and be horribly afraid H8175 , be ye very H3966 ADV desolate H2717 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .

15 The young lions H3715 roared H7580 upon H5921 PREP-3MS him , and yelled H6963 CMS-3MP , and they made H7896 his land H776 waste H8047 : his cities H5892 are burned H3341 without H1097 M-NPAR inhabitant H3427 .

17 Hast thou not H3808 D-NPAR procured H6213 VQY2MS this H2063 DPRO unto thyself , in that thou hast forsaken H5800 the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 , when H6256 he led H1980 thee by the way H1870 ?
18 And now H6258 W-ADV what H4100 IPRO hast thou to do in the way H1870 of Egypt H4714 EFS , to drink H8354 the waters H4325 of Sihor H7883 ? or what H4100 IPRO hast thou to do in the way H1870 of Assyria H804 GFS , to drink H8354 the waters H4325 of the river H5104 ?
19 Thine own wickedness H7451 shall correct H3256 thee , and thy backslidings H4878 shall reprove H3198 thee : know H3045 therefore and see H7200 that H3588 CONJ it is an evil H7451 AMS thing and bitter H4751 , that thou hast forsaken H5800 the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 , and that my fear H6345 is not H3808 W-NPAR in H413 thee , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 of hosts H6635 .

21 Yet I H595 had planted H5193 thee a noble vine H8321 , wholly H3605 a right H571 CFS seed H2233 NMS : how H349 W-IJEC then art thou turned H2015 into the degenerate H5494 plant of a strange H5237 vine H1612 unto me ?

24 A wild ass H6501 used H3928 to the wilderness H4057 NMS , that snuffeth up H7602 the wind H7307 NFS at her pleasure H185 ; in her occasion H8385 who H4310 IPRO can turn her away H7725 ? all H3605 NMS they that seek H1245 her will not H3808 NADV weary H3286 themselves ; in her month H2320 they shall find H4672 her .
25 Withhold H4513 thy foot H7272 from being unshod H3182 , and thy throat H1627 from thirst H6773 : but thou saidst H559 , There is no hope H2976 : no H3808 ; for H3588 CONJ I have loved H157 VQQ1MS strangers H2114 , and after H310 them will I go H1980 .
26 As the thief H1590 is ashamed H1322 when H3588 CONJ he is found H4672 , so H3651 ADV is the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 ashamed H954 ; they H1992 PPRO-3MP , their kings H4428 , their princes H8269 , and their priests H3548 , and their prophets H5030 ,
27 Saying H559 to a stock H6086 LD-NMS , Thou H859 PPRO-2MS art my father H1 CMS-1MS ; and to a stone H68 , Thou H859 PPRO-2FS hast brought me forth H3205 : for H3588 CONJ they have turned H6437 their back H6203 unto H413 PREP-1MS me , and not H3808 W-NPAR their face H6440 NMP : but in the time H6256 of their trouble H7451 they will say H559 , Arise H6965 , and save H3467 us .
28 But where H346 W-IGAT are thy gods H430 CMP-2MS that H834 RPRO thou hast made H6213 VQQ2MS thee ? let them arise H6965 VQY3MP , if H518 PART they can save H3467 thee in the time H6256 of thy trouble H7451 : for H3588 CONJ according to the number H4557 CMS of thy cities H5892 are H1961 VQQ3MP thy gods H430 CMP-2MS , O Judah H3063 .
29 Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO will ye plead H7378 with H413 me ? ye all H3605 CMS-2MP have transgressed H6586 against me , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
30 In vain H7723 have I smitten H5221 your children H1121 ; they received H3947 no H3808 NADV correction H4148 : your own sword H2719 hath devoured H398 VQQ3FS your prophets H5030 , like a destroying H7843 lion H738 .
31 O generation H1755 , see H7200 ye H859 PPRO-2MS the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS . Have I been H1961 VQQ1MS a wilderness H4057 unto Israel H3478 ? a land H776 GFS of darkness H3991 ? wherefore H4069 IPRO say H559 VQQ3MP my people H5971 , We are lords H7300 ; we will come H935 VNQ3MS no H3808 more H5750 ADV unto H413 thee ?
32 Can a maid H1330 forget H7911 her ornaments H5716 , or a bride H3618 her attire H7196 ? yet my people H5971 have forgotten H7911 me days H3117 NMP without H369 NPAR number H4557 NMS .
33 Why H4100 IPRO trimmest H3190 thou thy way H1870 CMP-2FS to seek H1245 love H160 ? therefore H3651 L-ADV hast thou also H1571 CONJ taught H3925 the wicked ones H7451 thy ways H1870 CMP-2FS .
34 Also H1571 CONJ in thy skirts H3671 is found H4672 the blood H1818 CMS of the souls H5315 of the poor H34 NMP innocents H5355 : I have not H3808 ADV found H4672 it by secret search H4290 , but H3588 CONJ upon H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS these H428 DPRO .
35 Yet thou sayest H559 , Because H3588 CONJ I am innocent H5352 , surely H389 ADV his anger H639 CMS-3MS shall turn H7725 VQQ3MS from H4480 M-PREP-1MS me . Behold H2009 , I will plead with H8199 thee , because H5921 PREP thou sayest H559 , I have not H3808 NADV sinned H2398 .

37 Yea H1571 CONJ , thou shalt go forth H3318 from him H2088 DPRO , and thine hands H3027 upon H5921 PREP thine head H7218 : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS hath rejected H3988 thy confidences H4009 , and thou shalt not H3808 W-NPAR prosper H6743 in them .
