Joshua 17:4 (NET) New English Translation

1 The tribe of Manasseh, Joseph's firstborn son, was also allotted land. The descendants of Makir, Manasseh's firstborn and the father of Gilead, received land, for they were warriors. They were assigned Gilead and Bashan.
2 The rest of Manasseh's descendants were also assigned land by their clans, including the descendants of Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida. These are the male descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph by their clans.
3 Now Zelophehad son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
4 They went before Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, "The LORD told Moses to assign us land among our relatives." So Joshua assigned them land among their uncles, as the LORD had commanded.
5 Manasseh was allotted ten shares of land, in addition to the land of Gilead and Bashan east of the Jordan,
6 for the daughters of Manasseh were assigned land among his sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the descendants of Manasseh.
7 The border of Manasseh went from Asher to Micmethath which is near Shechem. It then went south toward those who live in Tappuah.
8 (The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh, but Tappuah, located on the border of Manasseh, belonged to the tribe of Ephraim.)
9 The border then descended southward to the Valley of Kanah. Ephraim was assigned cities there among the cities of Manasseh, but the border of Manasseh was north of the valley and ended at the sea.
10 Ephraim's territory was to the south, and Manasseh's to the north. The sea was Manasseh's western border and their territory touched Asher on the north and Issachar on the east.
11 Within Issachar's and Asher's territory Manasseh was assigned Beth Shean, Ibleam, the residents of Dor, En Dor, the residents of Taanach, the residents of Megiddo, the three of Napheth, and the towns surrounding all these cities.
12 But the men of Manasseh were unable to conquer these cities; the Canaanites managed to remain in those areas.
13 Whenever the Israelites were strong militarily, they forced the Canaanites to do hard labor, but they never totally conquered them.
14 The descendants of Joseph said to Joshua, "Why have you assigned us only one tribal allotment? After all, we have many people, for until now the LORD has enabled us to increase in number."
15 Joshua replied to them, "Since you have so many people, go up into the forest and clear out a place to live in the land of the Perizzites and Rephaites, for the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you."
16 The descendants of Joseph said, "The whole hill country is inadequate for us, and the Canaanites living down in the valley in Beth Shean and its surrounding towns and in the Valley of Jezreel have chariots with iron-rimmed wheels."
17 Joshua said to the family of Joseph— to both Ephraim and Manasseh: "You have many people and great military strength. You will not have just one tribal allotment.
18 The whole hill country will be yours; though it is a forest, you can clear it and it will be entirely yours. You can conquer the Canaanites, though they have chariots with iron-rimmed wheels and are strong."

2 There was H1961 W-VQY3MS also a lot for the rest H3498 of the children H1121 L-CMP of Manasseh H4519 by their families H4940 L-CFP-3MP ; for the children H1121 L-CMP of Abiezer H44 , and for the children H1121 of Helek H2507 , and for the children H1121 of Asriel H844 , and for the children H1121 of Shechem H7928 , and for the children H1121 of Hepher H2660 , and for the children H1121 of Shemida H8061 : these H428 PMP were the male H2145 children H1121 L-CMP of Manasseh H4519 the son H1121 L-CMP of Joseph H3130 by their families H4940 .
3 But Zelophehad H6765 , the son H1121 NMP of Hepher H2660 , the son H1121 NMP of Gilead H1568 , the son H1121 NMP of Machir H4353 , the son H1121 NMP of Manasseh H4519 , had H1961 VQQ3MP no H3808 NADV sons H1121 NMP , but H518 PART daughters H1323 : and these H428 W-PMP are the names H8034 of his daughters H1323 , Mahlah H4244 , and Noah H5270 , Hoglah H2295 , Milcah H4435 EFS , and Tirzah H8656 .
4 And they came near H7126 before H6440 L-CMP Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 , and before H6440 L-CMP Joshua H3091 the son H1121 of Nun H5126 , and before H6440 L-CMP the princes H5387 , saying H559 L-VQFC , The LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 to give H5414 us an inheritance H5159 NFS among H8432 B-NMS our brethren H251 . Therefore according H413 PREP to the commandment H6310 of the LORD H3068 EDS he gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS them an inheritance H5159 among H8432 B-NMS the brethren H251 of their father H1 .
5 And there fell H5307 W-VQY3MP ten H6235 portions H2256 to Manasseh H4519 , beside H905 the land H776 M-NFS of Gilead H1568 and Bashan H1316 , which H834 RPRO were on the other side H5676 M-CMS Jordan H3383 ;
6 Because H3588 CONJ the daughters H1323 CFP of Manasseh H4519 had an inheritance H5157 among H8432 B-NMS his sons H1121 CMP-3MS : and the rest H3498 of Manasseh H4519 \'s sons H1121 had H1961 VQQ3FS the land H776 W-NFS of Gilead H1568 .
7 And the coast H1366 of Manasseh H4519 was H1961 W-VQY3MS from Asher H836 to Michmethah H4366 , that H834 RPRO lieth before H5921 PREP Shechem H7927 LMS ; and the border H1366 went along H1980 on H413 PREP the right hand H3225 D-NFS unto H413 PREP the inhabitants H3427 of En H5887 - tappuah .
8 Now Manasseh H4519 had H1961 VQQ3FS the land H776 GFS of Tappuah H8599 : but Tappuah H8599 on H413 PREP the border H1366 CMS of Manasseh H4519 belonged to the children H1121 L-CMP of Ephraim H669 ;
9 And the coast H1366 descended H3381 unto the river H5158 NMS Kanah H7071 , southward H5045 of the river H5158 : these H428 D-DPRO-3MP cities H5892 GFP of Ephraim H669 are among H8432 B-NMS the cities H5892 of Manasseh H4519 : the coast H1366 of Manasseh H4519 also was on the north side H6828 of the river H5158 , and the outgoings H8444 of it were H1961 W-VQY3MS at the sea H3220 :
10 Southward H5045 it was Ephraim H669 \'s , and northward H6828 it was Manasseh H4519 \'s , and the sea H3220 D-NMS is H1961 W-VQY3MS his border H1366 CMS-3MS ; and they met together H6293 in Asher H836 on the north H6828 M-NFS , and in Issachar H3485 on the east H4217 .
11 And Manasseh H4519 had H1961 W-VQY3MS in Issachar H3485 and in Asher H836 Beth H1052 - shean and her towns H1323 CFP-3FS , and Ibleam H2991 and her towns H1323 CFP-3FS , and the inhabitants H3427 of Dor H1756 and her towns H1323 CFP-3FS , and the inhabitants H3427 of Endor H5874 and her towns H1323 , and the inhabitants H3427 of Taanach H8590 and her towns H1323 , and the inhabitants H3427 of Megiddo H4023 and her towns H1323 CFP-3FS , even three H7969 BMS countries H5316 .
12 Yet the children H1121 of Manasseh H4519 could H3201 not H3808 W-NPAR drive out H3423 the inhabitants of those H428 D-DPRO-3MP cities H5892 ; but the Canaanites H3669 would H2974 dwell H3427 L-VQFC in that H2088 land H776 B-NFS .
13 Yet it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS , when H3588 CONJ the children H1121 of Israel H3478 were waxen strong H2388 , that they put H5414 W-VQY3MP the Canaanites H3669 to tribute H4522 ; but did not H3808 NADV utterly drive them out H3423 .
14 And the children H1121 of Joseph H3130 spoke H1696 unto H854 PREP Joshua H3091 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Why H4069 IPRO hast thou given H5414 VQQ2MS-2FS me but one H259 MMS lot H1486 and one H259 MMS portion H2256 to inherit H5159 NFS , seeing I H589 am a great H7227 AMS people H5971 NMS , forasmuch H5704 PREP as the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS hath blessed H1288 me hitherto H834 RPRO ?
15 And Joshua H3091 answered H559 W-VQY3MS them , If H518 PART thou H859 PPRO-2MS be a great H7227 AMS people H5971 NMS , then get thee up H5927 to the wood H3293 country , and cut down H1254 for thyself there H8033 ADV in the land H776 B-GFS of the Perizzites H6522 and of the giants H7497 , if H3588 CONJ mount H2022 CMS Ephraim H669 be too narrow H213 for thee .
16 And the children H1121 of Joseph H3130 said H559 , The hill H2022 is not H3808 ADV enough H4672 for us : and all H3605 B-CMS the Canaanites H3669 that dwell H3427 D-VQPMS in the land H776 B-GFS of the valley H6010 have chariots H7393 of iron H1270 NMS , both they who H834 are of Beth H1052 - shean and her towns H1323 CFP-3FS , and they who H834 are of the valley H6010 B-CMS of Jezreel H3157 .
17 And Joshua H3091 spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Joseph H3130 , even to Ephraim H669 and to Manasseh H4519 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Thou H859 PPRO-2MS art a great H7227 AMS people H5971 NMS , and hast great H1419 AMS power H3581 : thou shalt not H3808 ADV have H1961 VQY3MS one H259 ONUM lot H1486 only :
18 But H3588 CONJ the mountain H2022 CMS shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS thine ; for H3588 CONJ it H1931 PPRO-3MS is a wood H3293 , and thou shalt cut it down H1254 : and the outgoings H8444 of it shall be H1931 PPRO-3MS thine : for H3588 CONJ thou shalt drive out H3423 the Canaanites H3669 , though H3588 CONJ they have iron H1270 NMS chariots H7393 , and though H3588 CONJ they H1931 PPRO-3MS be strong H2389 AMS .
