Ezekiel 24:14 (RSV) Revised Standard Version

1 In the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
2 "Son of man, write down the name of this day, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.
3 And utter an allegory to the rebellious house and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Set on the pot, set it on, pour in water also;
4 put in it the pieces of flesh, all the good pieces, the thigh and the shoulder; fill it with choice bones.
5 Take the choicest one of the flock, pile the logs under it; boil its pieces, seethe also its bones in it.
6 "Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose rust is in it, and whose rust has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, without making any choice.
7 For the blood she has shed is still in the midst of her; she put it on the bare rock, she did not pour it upon the ground to cover it with dust.
8 To rouse my wrath, to take vengeance, I have set on the bare rock the blood she has shed, that it may not be covered.
9 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the bloody city! I also will make the pile great.
10 Heap on the logs, kindle the fire, boil well the flesh, and empty out the broth, and let the bones be burned up.
11 Then set it empty upon the coals, that it may become hot, and its copper may burn, that its filthiness may be melted in it, its rust consumed.
12 In vain I have wearied myself; its thick rust does not go out of it by fire.
13 Its rust is your filthy lewdness. Because I would have cleansed you and you were not cleansed from your filthiness, you shall not be cleansed any more till I have satisfied my fury upon you.
14 I the LORD have spoken; it shall come to pass, I will do it; I will not go back, I will not spare, I will not repent; according to your ways and your doings I will judge you, says the Lord GOD."
15 Also the word of the LORD came to me:
16 "Son of man, behold, I am about to take the delight of your eyes away from you at a stroke; yet you shall not mourn or weep nor shall your tears run down.
17 Sigh, but not aloud; make no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban, and put your shoes on your feet; do not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of mourners."
18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died. And on the next morning I did as I was commanded.
19 And the people said to me, "Will you not tell us what these things mean for us, that you are acting thus?"
20 Then I said to them, "The word of the LORD came to me:
21 `Say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the desire of your soul; and your sons and your daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword.
22 And you shall do as I have done; you shall not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of mourners.
23 Your turbans shall be on your heads and your shoes on your feet; you shall not mourn or weep, but you shall pine away in your iniquities and groan to one another.
24 Thus shall Ezekiel be to you a sign; according to all that he has done you shall do. When this comes, then you will know that I am the Lord GOD.'
25 "And you, son of man, on the day when I take from them their stronghold, their joy and glory, the delight of their eyes and their heart's desire, and also their sons and daughters,
26 on that day a fugitive will come to you to report to you the news.
27 On that day your mouth will be opened to the fugitive, and you shall speak and be no longer dumb. So you will be a sign to them; and they will know that I am the LORD."

3 And utter H4911 a parable H4912 NMS unto H413 PREP the rebellious H4805 house H1004 CMS , and say H559 unto H413 PREP them , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Set on H8239 a pot H5518 , set it on H8239 , and also H1571 W-CONJ pour H3332 water H4325 NMP into it :
4 Gather H622 the pieces H5409 thereof into H413 PREP-3FS it , even every H3605 NMS good H2896 AMS piece H5409 , the thigh H3409 , and the shoulder H3802 ; fill H4390 it with the choice H4005 bones H6106 .
5 Take H3947 the choice H4005 of the flock H6629 , and burn H1752 also H1571 W-CONJ the bones H6106 under H8478 CMP-3FS it , and make it boil H7570 well H7571 , and H1571 CONJ let them seethe H1310 the bones H6106 of it therein H8432 .
6 Wherefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Woe H188 to the bloody H1818 city H5892 GFS , to the pot H5518 whose H834 RPRO scum H2457 is therein , and whose scum H2457 is not H3808 NADV gone out H3318 VQQ3FS of H4480 M-PREP-3FS it ! bring it out H3318 piece H5409 by piece H5409 ; let no H3808 NADV lot H1486 fall H5307 upon H5921 PREP-3FS it .
7 For H3588 CONJ her blood H1818 is H1961 VQQ3MS in the midst H8432 of her ; she set H7760 it upon H5921 PREP the top H6706 of a rock H5553 NMS ; she poured H8210 it not H3808 NADV upon H5921 PREP the ground H776 D-GFS , to cover H3680 it with dust H6083 ;
8 That it might cause fury H2534 NFS to come up H5927 to take H5358 vengeance H5359 ; I have set H5414 VQQ1MS her blood H1818 upon H5921 PREP the top H6706 of a rock H5553 NMS , that it should not H1115 L-NPAR be covered H3680 .
9 Therefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Woe H188 to the bloody H1818 city H5892 GFS ! I H589 PPRO-1MS will even H1571 CONJ make the pile for fire H4071 great H1431 .
10 Heap on H7235 VHFA wood H6086 , kindle H1814 the fire H784 , consume H8552 the flesh H1320 D-NMS , and spice it well H4841 , and let the bones H6106 be burned H2787 .
11 Then set H5975 it empty H7386 upon H5921 PREP the coals H1513 thereof , that H4616 L-CONJ the brass H5178 of it may be hot H2552 , and may burn H2787 , and that the filthiness H2932 of it may be molten H5413 in H8432 it , that the scum H2457 of it may be consumed H8552 .
12 She hath wearied H3811 herself with lies H8383 , and her great H7227 scum H2457 went not forth out of H4480 M-PREP-3FS her : her scum H2457 shall be in the fire H784 .
13 In thy filthiness H2932 is lewdness H2154 NFS : because H3282 ADV I have purged H2891 thee , and thou wast not H3808 W-NPAR purged H2891 , thou shalt not H3808 W-NPAR be purged H2891 from thy filthiness H2932 any more H5750 ADV , till H5704 PREP I have caused my fury H2534 to rest H5117 upon thee .
14 I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS have spoken H1696 VPQ1MS it : it shall come to pass H935 VQQ3FS , and I will do H6213 it ; I will not H3808 ADV go back H6544 , neither H3808 W-NADV will I spare H2347 VQI1MS , neither H3808 W-NADV will I repent H5162 ; according to thy ways H1870 , and according to thy doings H5949 , shall they judge H8199 thee , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 .
15 Also the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
16 Son H1121 of man H120 NMS , behold H2009 , I take away H3947 from H4480 PREP-2MS thee the desire H4261 of thine eyes H5869 CMD-2MS with a stroke H4046 : yet neither H3808 W-NPAR shalt thou mourn H5594 nor H3808 W-NPAR weep H1058 , neither H3808 W-NPAR shall thy tears H1832 run down H935 VQY3FS .
17 Forbear H1826 to cry H602 , make H6213 no H3808 ADV mourning H60 for the dead H4191 , bind H2280 the tire of thine head H6287 upon H5921 PREP thee , and put on H7760 VQY2MS thy shoes H5275 upon thy feet H7272 , and cover H5844 not H3808 W-NADV thy lips H8222 , and eat H398 not H3808 NADV the bread H3899 of men H376 NMP .
18 So I spoke H1696 unto H413 PREP the people H5971 in the morning H1242 B-NMS : and at even H6153 my wife H802 CFS-1MS died H4191 ; and I did H6213 in the morning H1242 B-NMS as H834 K-RPRO I was commanded H6680 .
19 And the people H5971 said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-1MS me , Wilt thou not H3808 I-NPAR tell H5046 us what H4100 IGAT these H428 PMP things are to us , that H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS doest H6213 so ?
20 Then I answered H559 W-VQY1MS them , The word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP me , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
21 Speak H559 unto the house H1004 of Israel H3478 , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Behold H2009 , I will profane H2490 my sanctuary H4720 , the excellency H1347 CMS of your strength H5797 , the desire H4261 of your eyes H5869 CMP-2MP , and that which your soul H5315 CFS-2MP pitieth H4263 ; and your sons H1121 and your daughters H1323 whom H834 RPRO ye have left H5800 shall fall H5307 by the sword H2719 .
22 And ye shall do H6213 as H834 K-RPRO I have done H6213 VQQ1MS : ye shall not H3808 NADV cover H5844 your lips H8222 , nor H3808 NADV eat H398 VQY2MP the bread H3899 of men H376 NMP .
23 And your tires H6287 shall be upon H5921 PREP your heads H7218 , and your shoes H5275 upon your feet H7272 : ye shall not H3808 NADV mourn H5594 nor H3808 W-NADV weep H1058 ; but ye shall pine away H4743 for your iniquities H5771 , and mourn H5098 one H376 NMS toward H413 PREP another H251 CMP-3MS .
24 Thus Ezekiel H3168 is H1961 W-VQQ3MS unto you a sign H4159 : according to all H3605 K-NMS that H834 RPRO he hath done H6213 VQQ3MS shall ye do H6213 : and when this cometh H935 , ye shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 .
25 Also , thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS son H1121 CMS of man H120 NMS , shall it not H3808 D-NPAR be in the day H3117 B-NMS when I take H3947 from H4480 them their strength H4581 , the joy H4885 CMS of their glory H8597 , the desire H4261 of their eyes H5869 , and that whereupon they set H4853 their minds H5315 CFS-3MP , their sons H1121 and their daughters H1323 ,
26 That he that escapeth H6412 D-NMS in that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS shall come H935 VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-2MS thee , to cause thee to hear H2045 it with thine ears H241 ?
27 In that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS shall thy mouth H6310 CMS-2MS be opened H6605 to him which is escaped H6412 D-NMS , and thou shalt speak H1696 , and be no more dumb H481 : and thou shalt be H1961 W-VQQ2MS a sign H4159 unto them ; and they shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
