Jeremiah 31:13 (RSV) Revised Standard Version

1 "At that time, says the LORD, I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people."
2 Thus says the LORD: "The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness; when Israel sought for rest,
3 the LORD appeared to him from afar. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.
4 Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall adorn yourself with timbrels, and shall go forth in the dance of the merrymakers.
5 Again you shall plant vineyards upon the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant, and shall enjoy the fruit.
6 For there shall be a day when watchmen will call in the hill country of Ephraim: `Arise, and let us go up to Zion, to the LORD our God.'"
7 For thus says the LORD: "Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, `The LORD has saved his people, the remnant of Israel.'
8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her who is in travail, together; a great company, they shall return here.
9 With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will make them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my first-born.
10 "Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands afar off; say, `He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock.'
11 For the LORD has ransomed Jacob, and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him.
12 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion, and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the LORD, over the grain, the wine, and the oil, and over the young of the flock and the herd; their life shall be like a watered garden, and they shall languish no more.
13 Then shall the maidens rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy, I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
14 I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, says the LORD."
15 Thus says the LORD: "A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are not."
16 Thus says the LORD: "Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears; for your work shall be rewarded, says the LORD, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy.
17 There is hope for your future, says the LORD, and your children shall come back to their own country.
18 I have heard Ephraim bemoaning, `Thou hast chastened me, and I was chastened, like an untrained calf; bring me back that I may be restored, for thou art the LORD my God.
19 For after I had turned away I repented; and after I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh; I was ashamed, and I was confounded, because I bore the disgrace of my youth.'
20 Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he my darling child? For as often as I speak against him, I do remember him still. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him, says the LORD.
21 "Set up waymarks for yourself, make yourself guideposts; consider well the highway, the road by which you went. Return, O virgin Israel, return to these your cities.
22 How long will you waver, O faithless daughter? For the LORD has created a new thing on the earth: a woman protects a man."
23 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: "Once more they shall use these words in the land of Judah and in its cities, when I restore their fortunes: `The LORD bless you, O habitation of righteousness, O holy hill!'
24 And Judah and all its cities shall dwell there together, and the farmers and those who wander with their flocks.
25 For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish."
26 Thereupon I awoke and looked, and my sleep was pleasant to me.
27 "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast.
28 And it shall come to pass that as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring evil, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the LORD.
29 In those days they shall no longer say: `The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.'
30 But every one shall die for his own sin; each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.
31 "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,
32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant which they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD.
33 But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And no longer shall each man teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, `Know the LORD,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more."
35 Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar -- the LORD of hosts is his name:
36 "If this fixed order departs from before me, says the LORD, then shall the descendants of Israel cease from being a nation before me for ever."
37 Thus says the LORD: "If the heavens above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth below can be explored, then I will cast off all the descendants of Israel for all that they have done, says the LORD."
38 "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when the city shall be rebuilt for the LORD from the tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate.
39 And the measuring line shall go out farther, straight to the hill Gareb, and shall then turn to Goah.
40 The whole valley of the dead bodies and the ashes, and all the fields as far as the brook Kidron, to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east, shall be sacred to the LORD. It shall not be uprooted or overthrown any more for ever."

2 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , The people H5971 NMS which were left H8300 of the sword H2719 NFS found H4672 VQPMS grace H2580 NMS in the wilderness H4057 ; even Israel H3478 LMS , when I went H1980 VQFA to cause him to rest H7280 .
3 The LORD H3068 EDS hath appeared H7200 of old H7350 M-AMS unto me , saying , Yea , I have loved H157 thee with an everlasting H5769 NMS love H160 : therefore H3651 ADV with lovingkindness H2617 have I drawn H4900 thee .
4 Again H5750 ADV I will build H1129 thee , and thou shalt be built H1129 , O virgin H1330 of Israel H3478 : thou shalt again H5750 ADV be adorned H5710 with thy tabrets H8596 , and shalt go forth H3318 in the dances H4234 of them that make merry H7832 .
5 Thou shalt yet H5750 ADV plant H5193 vines H3754 upon the mountains H2022 of Samaria H8111 : the planters H5193 shall plant H5193 , and shall eat them as common things H2490 .
6 For H3588 CONJ there shall be H3426 ADV a day H3117 NMS , that the watchmen H5341 upon the mount H2022 Ephraim H669 shall cry H7121 , Arise H6965 ye , and let us go up H5927 to Zion H6726 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 .
7 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; Sing H7442 with gladness H8057 for Jacob H3290 , and shout H6670 among the chief H7218 B-NMS of the nations H1471 D-NMP : publish H8085 ye , praise H1984 ye , and say H559 , O LORD H3068 EDS , save H3467 thy people H5971 , the remnant H7611 of Israel H3478 LMS .
8 Behold H2009 , I will bring H935 VHPMS them from the north H6828 NFS country H776 M-NFS , and gather H6908 them from the coasts H3411 of the earth H776 NFS , and with them the blind H5787 and the lame H6455 , the woman with child H2029 and her that travaileth with child H3205 together H3162 ADV-3MS : a great H1419 AMS company H6951 shall return H7725 thither H2008 .
9 They shall come H935 VQY3MP with weeping H1065 , and with supplications H8469 will I lead H2986 them : I will cause them to walk H1980 by H413 PREP the rivers H5158 CMP of waters H4325 OMD in a straight H3477 AMS way H1870 B-NMS , wherein they shall not H3808 NADV stumble H3782 : for H3588 CONJ I am H1961 VQQ1MS a father H1 to Israel H3478 , and Ephraim H669 is my firstborn H1060 .
10 Hear H8085 VQI2MP the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , O ye nations H1471 NMP , and declare H5046 it in the isles H339 afar off H4801 , and say H559 , He that scattered H2219 Israel H3478 will gather H6908 him , and keep H8104 him , as a shepherd H7462 doth his flock H5739 .
11 For H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath redeemed H6299 Jacob H3290 , and ransomed H1350 him from the hand H3027 M-GFS of him that was stronger H2389 AMS than H4480 M-PREP-3MS he .
12 Therefore they shall come H935 and sing H7442 in the height H4791 of Zion H6726 , and shall flow together H5102 to H413 PREP the goodness H2898 of the LORD H3068 EDS , for H5921 PREP wheat H1715 , and for H5921 PREP wine H8492 , and for H5921 PREP oil H3323 , and for H5921 PREP the young H1121 of the flock H6629 NMS and of the herd H1241 W-NMS : and their soul H5315 CFS-3MP shall be H1961 W-VQQ3FS as a watered H7302 garden H1588 K-CMS ; and they shall not H3808 W-NPAR sorrow H1669 any more H3254 VHY3MP at all .
13 Then H227 ADV shall the virgin H1330 rejoice H8055 in the dance H4234 , both young men H970 and old H2205 W-AMP together H3162 ADV-3MS : for I will turn H2015 their mourning H60 into joy H8342 , and will comfort H5162 them , and make them rejoice H8055 from their sorrow H3015 .
14 And I will satiate H7301 the soul H5315 GFS of the priests H3548 with fatness H1880 , and my people H5971 shall be satisfied with my goodness H2898 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
15 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; A voice H6963 CMS was heard H8085 in Ramah H7414 , lamentation H5092 , and bitter H8563 weeping H1065 ; Rachel H7354 weeping H1058 for H5921 PREP her children H1121 CMP-3FS refused H3985 VPQ3FS to be comforted H5162 for H5921 PREP her children H1121 CMP-3FS , because H3588 CONJ they were not H369 ADV-3MS .
16 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; Refrain H4513 thy voice H6963 from weeping H1065 , and thine eyes H5869 from tears H1832 : for H3588 CONJ thy work H6468 shall be H3426 PART rewarded H7939 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS ; and they shall come again H7725 from the land H776 M-NFS of the enemy H341 .
17 And there is H3426 hope H8615 NFS in thine end H319 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , that thy children H1121 NMP shall come again H7725 to their own border H1366 .
18 I have surely heard H8085 VQFA Ephraim H669 bemoaning himself H5110 thus ; Thou hast chastised H3256 me , and I was chastised H3256 , as a bullock H5695 unaccustomed H3925 to the yoke : turn H7725 VHI2MS thou me , and I shall be turned H7725 ; for H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS art the LORD H3068 EDS my God H430 CMP-1MS .
19 Surely H3588 CONJ after that H310 PREP I was turned H7725 , I repented H5162 VNQ1MS ; and after that H310 I was instructed H3045 , I smote H5606 upon H5921 PREP my thigh H3409 : I was ashamed H954 , yea , even H1571 W-CONJ confounded H3637 , because H3588 CONJ I did bear H5375 VQQ1MS the reproach H2781 of my youth H5271 CMP-1MS .
20 Is Ephraim H669 my dear H3357 son H1121 ? is he a pleasant H8191 child H3206 ? for H3588 CONJ since H1767 I spoke H1696 against him , I do earnestly remember H2142 him still H5750 ADV : therefore H3651 ADV my bowels H4578 CMP-1MS are troubled H1993 for him ; I will surely have mercy H7355 upon him , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
21 Set thee up H5324 waymarks H6725 , make H7760 thee high heaps H8564 : set H7896 thine heart H3820 toward the highway H4546 , even the way H1870 NMS which thou wentest H1980 : turn again H7725 , O virgin H1330 of Israel H3478 , turn again H7725 to H413 PREP these H428 DPRO thy cities H5892 .
22 How long H5704 PREP wilt thou go about H2559 , O thou backsliding H7728 daughter H1323 ? for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath created H1254 a new thing H2319 in the earth H776 B-NFS , A woman H5347 shall compass H5437 a man H1397 NMS .
23 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 ; As yet H5750 ADV they shall use H559 VQY3MP this H2088 D-PMS speech H1697 D-NMS in the land H776 B-GFS of Judah H3063 and in the cities H5892 thereof , when I shall bring again H7725 their captivity H7622 ; The LORD H3068 EDS bless H1288 thee , O habitation H5116 of justice H6664 NMS , and mountain H2022 CMS of holiness H6944 .
24 And there shall dwell H3427 in Judah H3063 itself , and in all H3605 W-CMS the cities H5892 thereof together H3162 ADV-3MS , husbandmen H406 , and they that go forth H5265 with flocks H5739 .
25 For H3588 CONJ I have satiated H7301 the weary H5889 soul H5315 GFS , and I have replenished H4390 every H3605 W-CMS sorrowful H1669 soul H5315 GFS .
26 Upon H5921 PREP this H2063 DPRO I awaked H6974 , and beheld H7200 ; and my sleep H8142 was sweet H6149 unto me .
27 Behold H2009 IJEC , the days H3117 NMP come H935 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , that I will sow H2232 the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 and the house H1004 CMS of Judah H3063 with the seed H2233 NMS of man H120 NMS , and with the seed H2233 of beast H929 .
28 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that like as H834 K-RPRO I have watched H8245 over H5921 PREP-3MP them , to pluck up H5428 , and to break down H5422 , and to throw down H2040 , and to destroy H6 , and to afflict H7489 ; so H3651 ADV will I watch H8245 over H5921 PREP-3MP them , to build H1129 , and to plant H5193 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
29 In those H1992 D-PPRO-3MP days H3117 BD-NMP they shall say H559 VQY3MP no H3808 NADV more H5750 ADV , The fathers H1 have eaten H398 a sour grape H1155 , and the children H1121 NMP \'s teeth H8127 W-CMD are set on edge H6949 .
30 But H518 PART every one H376 NMS shall die H4191 VQY3MS for his own iniquity H5771 : every H3605 NMS man H120 D-NMS that eateth H398 the sour grape H1155 , his teeth H8127 shall be set on edge H6949 .
31 Behold H2009 IJEC , the days H3117 NMP come H935 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , that I will make H3772 a new H2319 covenant H1285 NFS with H854 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 , and with H854 W-PART the house H1004 CMS of Judah H3063 :
32 Not H3808 NADV according to the covenant H1285 that H834 RPRO I made H3772 VQQ1MS with H854 PREP their fathers H1 CMP-3MP in the day H3117 B-NMS that I took H2388 them by the hand H3027 B-CFS-3MP to bring H3318 them out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 ; which H834 RPRO my covenant H1285 B-CFS-1MS they H1992 PPRO-3MP broke H6565 , although I H595 W-PPRO-1MS was a husband H1166 unto them , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS :
33 But H3588 CONJ this H2063 DPRO shall be the covenant H1285 D-NFS that H834 RPRO I will make H3772 with H854 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 ; After H310 PREP those H1992 D-PPRO-3MP days H3117 D-NMP , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , I will put H5414 VQQ1MS my law H8451 in their inward parts H7130 , and write H3789 it in H5921 W-PREP their hearts H3820 CMS-3MP ; and will be H1961 their God H430 L-NMP , and they H1992 shall be H1961 my people H5971 .
34 And they shall teach H3925 no H3808 W-NPAR more H5750 ADV every man H376 NMS his neighbor H7453 NMS-3MS , and every man H376 NMS his brother H251 CMS-3MS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Know H3045 the LORD H3068 EDS : for H3588 CONJ they shall all H3605 know H3045 me , from the least H6996 of them unto H5704 W-PREP the greatest H1419 of them , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS : for H3588 CONJ I will forgive H5545 their iniquity H5771 , and I will remember H2142 their sin H2403 no H3808 W-NPAR more H5750 ADV .
35 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , which giveth H5414 VQPMS the sun H8121 for a light H216 L-NMS by day H3119 ADV , and the ordinances H2708 of the moon H3394 NMS and of the stars H3556 W-NMP for a light H216 L-NMS by night H3915 NFS , which divideth H7280 the sea H3220 D-NMS when the waves H1530 thereof roar H1993 ; The LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 is his name H8034 CMS-3MS :
36 If H518 PART those H428 D-DPRO-3MP ordinances H2706 depart H4185 from before H6440 me , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , then the seed H2233 NMS of Israel H3478 also H1571 CONJ shall cease H7673 from being a nation H1471 NMS before H6440 L-CMP me forever H3117 D-NMP .
37 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; If H518 PART heaven H8064 NMP above H4605 ML-ADV-3FS can be measured H4058 , and the foundations H4146 of the earth H776 GFS searched out H2713 beneath H4295 , I H589 PPRO-1MS will also H1571 CONJ cast off H3988 VQY1MS all H3605 NMS the seed H2233 NMS of Israel H3478 for H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO they have done H6213 VQQ3MP , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
38 Behold H2009 IJEC , the days H3117 NMP come H935 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , that the city H5892 D-GFS shall be built H1129 to the LORD H3068 L-EDS from the tower H4026 of Hananeel H2606 unto the gate H8179 NMS of the corner H6438 .
39 And the measuring H4060 line H6957 shall yet H5750 ADV go forth H3318 over against H5048 PREP-3MS it upon H5921 PREP the hill H1389 Gareb H1619 , and shall compass about H5437 to Goath H1601 .
40 And the whole H3605 W-CMS valley H6010 of the dead bodies H6297 , and of the ashes H1880 , and all H3605 the fields H8309 unto H5704 PREP the brook H5158 NMS of Kidron H6939 , unto H5704 PREP the corner H6438 of the horse H5483 gate H8179 NMS toward the east H4217 , shall be holy H6944 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS ; it shall not H3808 ADV be plucked up H5428 , nor H3808 NADV thrown down H2040 any more H5750 ADV forever H5769 .
