1 میں نے اپنے دل سے کہا آ میں تجھ کو خُوشی میں آزماوں گا۔ سو عشرت کر لے۔ لو یہ بھی بُطلان ہے۔
2 میں نے ہنسی کو دیوانہ کہا اور شادمانی کے بارے میں کہا اس سے کیا حاصل؟۔
3 میں نے دل میں سوچا کہ جسم کو مے نوشی سے کیوں کر تازہ کُروں اور اپنے دل کو حکمت کی طرف مائل رکھوں اور کیوں کر حماقت کو پکڑے رہُوں جب تک معلوم کُروں کہ بنی آدم کی بہُبودی کس بات میں ہے کہ وہ آسمان کے نیچے عُمر بھر یہی کیا کریں۔
4 میں نے بڑے بڑے کام کئے ۔ میں نے اپنے لئے عمارتیں بنائیں اور میں نے اپنے لے تاکستان لگائے۔
5 میں نے اپنے لے باغیچے اور باغ تیار کئے اور اُن میں ہر قسم کے میوہ دار درخت لگائے۔
6 میں نے اپنے لے تالاب بناے کہ اُن میں سے باغ کے درختوں کا ذخیرہ سینچوں۔
7 میں نے غلامُوں اوت لُونڈیوں کو خریدا اور نوکر چا کر میرے گھر میں پیدا ہُوئے اور جتنے مجھ سے پہلے یُروشلیم میں تھے اُن سے کہیں زیادہ گائے بُیل اور بھیڑیوں کا مالک تھا۔
8 میں نے سونااور چاندی اور بادشاہوں اور صوبوں کا خاص خزانہ اپنے لے جمع کیا۔ میں نے گانے والوں اور گانے والیوں کو رکھا اور بنی آدم کے اسباب عیش یعنی لونڈیوں کو اپنے لے کثرت سے فراہم کیا۔
9 سو میں بزرگ ہُوا اور اُن سبھوں سے جو مجھ سے پہلے یروشلیم میں تھے زیادہ بڑھ گیا۔ میری حکمت بھی مجھ سے قائم رہی۔
10 اور سب کچھ جو میری آنکھیں چاہتی تھیں میں نے اُن سے باز نہ رکھا ۔ میں نے اپنے دل کو کسی طرح کی خُوشی سے نہ روکا کیونکہ میرا دل میری ساری محنت سے شادمان ہوا اور میری ساری محنت سے میرا بخرہ یہی تھا۔
11 پھر میں نے ان سب کاموں پر جو میرے ہاتھوں نے کئے تھے اور اُس مشقت پر جو میں نے کام کرنے میں کھینچی تھی نظر کی اور دیکھا کہ سب بُطلان اور ہوا کی چران ہے اور دُنیا میں کُچھ فائدہ نہیں ۔
12 اور میں حکمت اور دیوانگی اور حماقت کے دیکھنے پر متوجہ ہوا۔ کیونکہ وہ شخص جو بادشاہ کے بعد آئے گا کیا کرے گا؟ وہی جو چلا آتا ہے۔
13 اور میں نے دیکھا کہ جیسی روشنی کو تاریکی پر فضیلت ہے ویسی ہی حکمت حماقت سے افضل ہے ۔
14 دانشور اپنی آنکھیں اپنے سر میں رکھتا ہے پر احمق اندھیرے میں چلتا ہے۔ تو بھی میں جان گیا کہ ایک ہی حادثہ اُن سب پر گُزرتا ہے۔
15 تب میں نے دل میں کہا جیسا احمق پر حادثہ ہوتا ہے ویسا ہی مجھ پر بھی ہو گا۔ پھر میں کیوں زیادہ دانشور ہُوا؟ سو میں نے دل میں کہا کہ یہ بھی بُطلان ہے۔
16 کیونکہ نہ دانشوار اور نہ احمق کی یادگار ابد تک رہے گی۔ اس لے کہ آنے والے دنوں میں سب کچھ فراموش ہو چُلے گا اور دانشور کیوں کر احمق کی طرح مرتا ہے!۔
17 پس میں زندگی سے بیزار ہُوا کیونکہ جو کام دُنیا میں کیا جاتا ہے مُجھے بُہت بُرا معلوم ہُوا کیونکہ سب بُطلان اور ہوا کی چران ہے۔
18 بلکہ میں اپنی ساری محنت سے جو دُنیا میں کی تھی بیزار ہُوا کیونکہ ضُرور ہے کہ میں اُسے اُس آدمی کے لے جو میرے بعد آئے گا چھوڑ جاوں ۔
19 اور کون جانتا ہے کہ وہ دانشور ہو گا یا احمق؟ بہر حال وہ میری ساری محنت کے کام پر جو میں نے کیا اور جس میں میں نے دُنیا میں اپنی حکمت ظاہر کی ضابط ہو گا۔ یہ بھی بُطلان ہے۔
20 تب میں نے پھر ا کہ اپنے دل کو اُس سارے کام سے جو میں نے دُنیا میں کیا تھا نا اُمید کُروں ۔
21 کیونکہ ایسا شخص بھی ہے جس کےکام حکمت اور دانائی اور کامیابی کے ساتھ ہیں لیکن وہ اُن کو دوسرے آدمی کے لے جس نے اُن میں کچھ محنت نہیں کی اُس کی میراث کے لے چھوڑ جائے گا۔ یہ بھی بُطلان اور بلای عظیم ہے۔
22 کیونکہ آدمی کو اُس کی ساری مشقت اور جانفشانی سے جو اُس نے دُنیا میں کی کیا حاصل ہے؟۔
23 کیونکہ اُس کے لے عُمر بھر غم ہے اور اُس کی محنت ماتم ہے بلکہ اُس کا دل رات کو بھی آرام نہیں پاتا۔ یہ بھی بُطلان ہے۔
24 پس انسان کے لے اس سے بہتر کچھ نہیں کہ وہ کھائے اور اپنے اور اپنی ساری محنت کے درمیان خُوش ہو کر اپنا جی بہلاے۔ میں نے دیکھا کہ یہ بھی خُدا کے ہاتھ سے ہے۔
25 اس لے کہ مجھ سے زیادہ کون کھا سکتا اور کون مزہ اُڑا سکتا ہے؟۔
26 کیونکہ وہ اُس آدمی کو جو اُس کے حضور میں اچھا ہے حکمت اور دانائی اور خُوشی بخشتا ہے لیکن گُہنگار کو زحمت دیتا ہے کہ وہ جمع کرے اور انبار لگائے تاکہ اُسے دے جو خُدا کا پسندیدہ ہے۔ یہ بھی بُطلان اور ہوا کی چران ہے۔

4 I made me great H1431 works H4639 ; I built H1129 me houses H1004 NMP ; I planted H5193 me vineyards H3754 NMP :
5 I made H6213 VQQ1MS me gardens H1593 and orchards H6508 , and I planted H5193 trees H6086 NMS in them of all H3605 NMS kind of fruits H6529 :
6 I made H6213 VQQ1MS me pools H1295 of water H4325 NMD , to water H8248 L-VHFC therewith H4480 the wood H3293 that bringeth forth H6779 trees H6086 :
7 I got H7069 VQQ1MS me servants H5650 NMP and maidens H8198 , and had H1961 VQQ3MS servants born H1121 W-CMP in my house H1004 ; also H1571 CONJ I had H1961 VQQ3MS great H7235 VHFA possessions H4735 NMS of great H1241 and small cattle H6629 above all H3605 M-CMS that were in Jerusalem H3389 before H6440 L-CMP me :
8 I gathered H3664 me also H1571 CONJ silver H3701 NMS and gold H2091 , and the peculiar treasure H5459 of kings H4428 NMP and of the provinces H4082 : I got H6213 VQQ1MS me men singers H7891 and women singers H7891 , and the delights H8588 of the sons H1121 of men H120 D-NMS , as musical instruments H7705 , and that of all sorts .
9 So I was great H1431 , and increased more H3254 than all H3605 M-CMS that were before H6440 L-CMP me in Jerusalem H3389 : also H637 CONJ my wisdom H2451 remained H5975 with me .

12 And I H589 PPRO-1MS turned H6437 myself to behold H7200 L-VQFC wisdom H2451 NFS , and madness H1947 , and folly H5531 : for H3588 CONJ what H4100 IPRO can the man H120 D-NMS do that cometh H7945 after H310 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS ? even that which H834 RPRO hath been already H3528 done H6213 .
13 Then I H589 PPRO-1MS saw H7200 that wisdom H2451 LD-NFS excelleth H3504 folly H5531 , as far as light H216 D-NMS excelleth H3504 darkness H2822 D-NMS .
14 The wise man H2450 I-AMS \'s eyes H5869 CMD-3MS are in his head H7218 ; but the fool H3684 walketh H1980 VQPMS in darkness H2822 BD-NMS : and I myself H589 PPRO-1MS perceived H3045 also H1571 CONJ that one event H7945 happeneth H7136 to H854 them all H3605 CMS-3MP .
15 Then said H559 I H589 PPRO-1MS in my heart H3820 , As it happeneth H4745 to the fool H3684 , so it happeneth H7136 even H1571 CONJ to me ; and why H4100 WL-IGAT was I H589 PPRO-1MS then H227 ADV more H3148 wise H2449 ? Then I said H1696 in my heart H3820 , that this H2088 DPRO also H7945 is vanity H1892 .
16 For H3588 CONJ there is no H369 NPAR remembrance H2146 of the wise H2450 more than H5973 of the fool H3684 forever H5769 L-NMS ; seeing that which now H7945 is in the days H3117 D-NMP to come H935 shall all H3605 be forgotten H7911 . And how H349 W-IJEC dieth H4191 VQY3MS the wise H2450 man ? as H5973 the fool H3684 .
17 Therefore I hated H8130 life H2416 ; because H3588 CONJ the work H4639 that is wrought H7945 under H8478 NMS the sun H8121 is grievous H7451 AMS unto H5921 PREP-1MS me : for H3588 CONJ all H3605 is vanity H1892 NMS and vexation H7469 of spirit H7307 NMS .
18 Yea , I H589 PPRO-1MS hated H8130 all H3605 NMS my labor H5999 which I H589 PPRO-1MS had taken H6001 NMS under H8478 NMS the sun H8121 : because I should leave H7945 it unto the man H120 that shall be after H310 me .
19 And who H4310 W-IPRO knoweth H3045 VQPMS whether he shall be H1961 VQY3MS a wise H2450 I-AMS man or H176 CONJ a fool H5530 ? yet shall he have rule H7980 over all H3605 B-CMS my labor H5999 wherein I have labored H5998 , and wherein I have showed myself wise H7945 under H8478 NMS the sun H8121 . This H2088 DPRO is also H1571 CONJ vanity H1892 .
20 Therefore I H589 PPRO-1MS went about H5437 to cause my heart H3820 NMS-1MS to despair H2976 of H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the labor H5999 which I took H7945 under H8478 NMS the sun H8121 .
21 For H3588 CONJ there is H3426 PART a man H120 NMS whose labor H7945 is in wisdom H2451 B-NFS , and in knowledge H1847 , and in equity H3788 ; yet to a man H120 WL-NMS that hath not H7945 labored H5998 therein shall he leave H5414 it for his portion H2506 . This H2088 DPRO also H1571 CONJ is vanity H1892 NMS and a great H7227 AFS evil H7451 .
22 For H3588 CONJ what H4100 hath H1933 man H120 LD-NMS of all H3605 B-CMS his labor H5999 , and of the vexation H7475 of his heart H3820 CMS-3MS , wherein he hath labored H6001 NMS under H8478 NMS the sun H8121 ?
23 For H3588 CONJ all H3605 CMS his days H3117 CMP-3MS are sorrows H4341 , and his travail H6045 grief H3708 ; yea H1571 CONJ , his heart H3820 taketh not H3808 NADV rest H7901 VQQ3MS in the night H3915 . This H2088 DPRO is also H1571 CONJ vanity H1892 NMS .
24 There is nothing H369 ADV better H2896 AMS for a man H120 , than that he should eat H7945 and drink H8354 , and that he should make his soul H7200 VQQ1MS good H2896 AMS in his labor H5999 . This H2090 also H1571 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS saw H7200 VQQ1MS , that H3588 CONJ it H1931 was from the hand H3027 M-GFS of God H430 D-EDP .
25 For H3588 CONJ who H4310 W-IPRO can eat H398 VQY3MS , or who H4310 W-IPRO else can hasten H2363 hereunto , more H2351 than H4480 PREP-1MS I ?
26 For H3588 CONJ God giveth H5414 VQQ3MS to a man H120 L-CMS that is good H2896 in his sight H6440 L-CMP wisdom H2451 NFS , and knowledge H1847 W-VQFC , and joy H8057 : but to the sinner H2398 he giveth H5414 VQQ3MS travail H6045 , to gather H622 and to heap up H3664 , that he may give H5414 L-VQFC to him that is good H2896 before H6440 L-CMP God H430 D-NAME-4MP .
