2 Chronicles 32:1 (AKJV) American King James Version

1 After these things, and the establishment thereof, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fenced cities, and thought to win them for himself.
2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,
3 He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.
4 So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the middle of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?
5 Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.
6 And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city, and spoke comfortably to them, saying,
7 Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:
8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
9 After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege against Lachish, and all his power with him,) to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
10 Thus said Sennacherib king of Assyria, Where on do you trust, that you abide in the siege in Jerusalem?
11 Does not Hezekiah persuade you to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
12 Has not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, You shall worship before one altar, and burn incense on it?
13 Know you not what I and my fathers have done to all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of my hand?
14 Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand?
15 Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand?
16 And his servants spoke yet more against the LORD God, and against his servant Hezekiah.
17 He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of my hand.
18 Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' speech to the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.
19 And they spoke against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.
20 And for this cause Hezekiah the king, and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz, prayed and cried to heaven.
21 And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.
22 Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side.
23 And many brought gifts to the LORD to Jerusalem, and presents to Hezekiah king of Judah: so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thereafter.
24 In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed to the LORD: and he spoke to him, and he gave him a sign.
25 But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done to him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath on him, and on Judah and Jerusalem.
26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not on them in the days of Hezekiah.
27 And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honor: and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels;
28 Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and cotes for flocks.
29 Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.
30 This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper watercourse of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
31 However, in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.
32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the most chief of the sepulchers of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

2 And when Hezekiah H3169 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that H3588 CONJ Sennacherib H5576 was come H935 , and that he was purposed H6440 to fight H4421 against H5921 PREP Jerusalem H3389 ,
3 He took counsel H3289 with H5973 PREP his princes H8269 CMP-3MS and his mighty men H1368 to stop H5640 the waters H4325 of the fountains H5869 which H834 RPRO were without H2351 the city H5892 L-NMS : and they did help H5826 him .
4 So there was gathered H6908 much H7227 AMS people H5971 NMS together , who stopped H5640 all H3605 NMS the fountains H4599 , and the brook H5158 that ran H7857 through the midst H8432 B-NMS of the land H776 D-GFS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Why H4100 L-IPRO should the kings H4428 CMP of Assyria H804 GFS come H935 , and find H4672 much H7227 AMP water H4325 OMD ?
5 Also he strengthened himself H2388 , and built up H1129 W-VQY3MS all H3605 NMS the wall H2346 that was broken H6555 , and raised it up H5927 W-VHY3MS to H5921 PREP the towers H4026 , and another H312 wall H2346 without H2351 , and repaired H2388 Millo H4407 in the city H5892 GFS of David H1732 , and made H6213 W-VQY3MS darts H7973 and shields H4043 in abundance H7230 LD-NMS .
6 And he set H5414 W-VQQ3MS captains H8269 CMP of war H4421 over H5921 PREP the people H5971 , and gathered them together H6908 to H413 PREP-3MS him in H413 PREP the street H7339 of the gate H8179 NMS of the city H5892 D-GFS , and spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS comfortably H3824 to them , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
7 Be strong H2388 and courageous H553 , be not afraid H3372 nor H408 NPAR dismayed H2865 for M-CMP the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS , nor for M-CMP all H3605 NMS the multitude H1995 that H834 RPRO is with H5973 PREP-3MS him : for H3588 CONJ there be more H7227 AMS with H5973 PREP-1MP us than with him :
8 With H5973 PREP-3MS him is an arm H2220 NFS of flesh H1320 NMS ; but with H5973 us is the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 to help H5826 us , and to fight H3898 our battles H4421 . And the people H5971 rested themselves H5564 upon H5921 PREP the words H1697 CMP of Hezekiah H3169 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 .
9 After H310 ADV this H2088 DPRO did Sennacherib H5576 king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS send H7971 VQQ3MS his servants H5650 to Jerusalem H3389 , (but he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS himself laid siege against H5921 PREP Lachish H3923 , and all H3605 NMS his power H4475 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , ) unto H5921 PREP Hezekiah H3169 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , and unto H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS Judah H3063 that H834 RPRO were at Jerusalem H3389 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
10 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS Sennacherib H5576 king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS , Whereon H5921 PREP do ye H859 PPRO-2MS trust H982 , that ye abide H3427 in the siege H4692 in Jerusalem H3389 ?
11 Doth not H3808 I-NADV Hezekiah H3169 persuade H5496 you to give over H5414 L-VQFC yourselves to die H4191 L-VQFC by famine H7458 B-NMS and by thirst H6772 WB-NMS , saying H559 L-VQFC , The LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 shall deliver H5337 us out of the hand H3709 M-CFS of the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 ?
12 Hath not H3808 I-NADV the same H1931 PPRO-3MS Hezekiah H3169 taken away H5493 VHQ3MS his high places H1116 and his altars H4196 , and commanded H559 W-VQY3MS Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Ye shall worship H7812 before H6440 L-CMP one H259 MMS altar H4196 NMS , and burn incense H6999 upon H5921 it ?
13 Know H3045 ye not H3808 I-NADV what H4100 IPRO I H589 PPRO-1MS and my fathers H1 have done H6213 VQQ1MS unto all H3605 the people H5971 of other lands H776 ? were the gods H430 CDP of the nations H1471 of those lands H776 any ways able H3201 VQP3MP to deliver H5337 L-VHFC their lands H776 out of mine hand H3027 ?
14 Who H4310 IPRO was there among all H3605 the gods H430 CDP of those H428 D-DPRO-3MP nations H1471 D-NMP that H834 RPRO my fathers H1 utterly destroyed H2763 , that H834 RPRO could H3201 deliver H5337 L-VHFC his people H5971 out of mine hand H3027 , that H3588 CONJ your God H430 should be able H3201 VQY3MS to deliver H5337 L-VHFC you out of mine hand H3027 ?
15 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore let not H408 NPAR Hezekiah H2396 deceive H5377 you , nor H408 ADV persuade H5496 you on this manner H2063 , neither H408 ADV yet believe H539 him : for H3588 CONJ no H3808 NADV god H433 EDS of any H3605 NMS nation H1471 NMS or kingdom H4467 was able H3201 VQY3MS to deliver H5337 L-VHFC his people H5971 out of mine hand H3027 , and out of the hand H3027 WM-GFS of my fathers H1 : how much less H637 CONJ shall your God H430 deliver H5337 you out of mine hand H3027 ?
16 And his servants H5650 spoke H1696 yet H5750 W-ADV more against H5921 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 D-EDP , and against H5921 PREP his servant H5650 Hezekiah H3169 .
17 He wrote H3789 CMS also letters H5612 to rail H2778 on the LORD H3068 L-EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , and to speak H559 against H5921 PREP-3MS him , saying H559 L-VQFC , As the gods H430 of the nations H1471 of other lands H776 have not H3808 NADV delivered H5337 their people H5971 out of mine hand H3027 , so H3651 ADV shall not H3808 ADV the God H430 CDP of Hezekiah H3169 deliver H5337 his people H5971 out of mine hand H3027 .
18 Then they cried H7121 W-VQY3MP with a loud H1419 AMS voice H6963 in the Jews\' speech H3066 unto H5921 PREP the people H5971 NMS of Jerusalem H3389 that H834 RPRO were on H5921 PREP the wall H2346 , to frighten H3372 them , and to trouble H926 them ; that H4616 L-CONJ they might take H3920 the city H5892 D-GFS .
19 And they spoke H1696 against H413 PREP the God H430 CDP of Jerusalem H3389 , as against H5921 the gods H430 CDP of the people H5971 of the earth H776 D-GFS , which were the work H4639 M-CMS of the hands H3027 CFD of man H120 D-NMS .
20 And for H5921 PREP this H2063 DPRO cause Hezekiah H3169 the king H4428 D-NMS , and the prophet H5030 Isaiah H3470 the son H1121 CMS of Amoz H531 , prayed H6419 W-VTY3MS and cried H2199 W-VQY3MP to heaven H8064 D-AMD .
21 And the LORD H3068 EDS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS an angel H4397 NMS , which cut off H3582 all H3605 NMS the mighty men H1368 AMS of valor H2428 NMS , and the leaders H5057 and captains H8269 in the camp H4264 of the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS . So he returned H7725 with shame H1322 of face H6440 NMP to his own land H776 L-CFS-3MS . And when he was come into H935 W-VQY3MS the house H1004 CMS of his god H430 CMP-3MS , they that came forth of his own bowels H4578 slew H5307 him there H8033 ADV with the sword H2719 .
22 Thus the LORD H3068 EDS saved H3467 Hezekiah H3169 and the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 from the hand H3027 M-GFS of Sennacherib H5576 the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS , and from the hand H3027 WM-GFS of all H3605 NMS other , and guided H5095 them on every side H5439 .
23 And many H7227 brought H935 gifts H4503 NFS unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS to Jerusalem H3389 , and presents H4030 to Hezekiah H3169 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 : so that he was magnified H5375 in the sight H5869 of all H3605 CMS nations H1471 D-NMP from thenceforth H310 .
24 In those H1992 D-PPRO-3MP days H3117 BD-NMP Hezekiah H3169 was sick H2470 to H5704 PREP the death H4191 L-VQFC , and prayed H6419 W-VTY3MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS : and he spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , and he gave H5414 VQQ3MS him a sign H4159 .
25 But Hezekiah H3169 rendered not again H7725 VHQ3MS according to the benefit H1576 done unto H5921 PREP-3MS him ; for H3588 CONJ his heart H3820 CMS-3MS was lifted up H1361 : therefore there was H1961 W-VQY3MS wrath H7110 upon H5921 PREP-3MS him , and upon H5921 PREP-3MS Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389 .
26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah H3169 humbled himself H3665 for the pride H1363 of his heart H3820 CMS-3MS , both he H1931 PPRO-3MS and the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 , so that the wrath H7110 of the LORD H3068 EDS came H935 not H3808 W-NPAR upon H5921 PREP-3MP them in the days H3117 B-CMP of Hezekiah H3169 .
27 And Hezekiah H3169 had H1961 W-VQY3MS exceeding H3966 ADV much H7235 VHFA riches H6239 and honor H3519 : and he made H6213 himself treasuries H214 for silver H3701 , and for gold H2091 , and for precious H3368 stones H68 , and for spices H1314 , and for shields H4043 , and for all manner H3605 WL-CMS of pleasant H2532 jewels H3627 ;
28 Storehouses H4543 also for the increase H8393 of corn H1715 , and wine H8492 , and oil H3323 ; and stalls H723 for all manner H3605 L-CMS of beasts H929 NFS , and cotes H220 for flocks H5739 .
29 Moreover he provided H6213 VQQ3MS him cities H5892 , and possessions H4735 of flocks H6629 NMS and herds H1241 W-NMS in abundance H7230 LD-NMS : for H3588 CONJ God H430 EDP had given H5414 him substance H7399 very H3966 ADV much H7227 AMS .
30 This same H1931 W-PPRO-3MS Hezekiah H3169 also stopped H5640 the upper H5945 watercourse H4161 NMS of Gihon H1521 , and brought it straight H3474 down H4295 to the west side H4628 of the city H5892 of David H1732 . And Hezekiah H3169 prospered H6743 in all H3605 his works H4639 CMS-3MS .
31 Howbeit H3651 in the business of the ambassadors H3887 of the princes H8269 CMP of Babylon H894 LFS , who sent H7971 unto H5921 PREP-3MS him to inquire of H1875 L-VQFC the wonder H4159 that H834 RPRO was H1961 VQQ3MS done in the land H776 BD-GFS , God H430 D-NAME-4MS left H5800 him , to try H5254 him , that he might know H3045 L-VQFC all H3605 NMS that was in his heart H3824 .
32 Now the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 CMP of Hezekiah H3169 , and his goodness H2617 , behold H2009 , they are written H3789 in the vision H2377 of Isaiah H3470 the prophet H5030 , the son H1121 CMS of Amoz H531 , and in H5921 PREP the book H5612 CMS of the kings H4428 CMP of Judah H3063 and Israel H3478 .
33 And Hezekiah H3169 slept H7901 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 , and they buried H6912 him in the chiefest H4608 of the sepulchers H6913 of the sons H1121 CMP of David H1732 : and all H3605 NMS Judah H3063 and the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 did H6213 him honor H3519 at his death H4194 . And Manasseh H4519 his son H1121 reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 .
