Matthew 5:2 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 When Jesus saw the crowds of people there, he went up on a hill and sat down. His followers came and sat next to him.
2 Then Jesus began teaching the people. He said,
3 "What great blessings there are for those who know they are spiritually in need. God's kingdom belongs to them.
4 What great blessings there are for those who are sad now. God will comfort them.
5 What great blessings there are for those who are humble. They will be given the land God promised.
6 What great blessings there are for those who want to do right more than anything else. God will fully satisfy them.
7 What great blessings there are for those who show mercy to others. Mercy will be given to them.
8 What great blessings there are for those whose thoughts are pure. They will be with God.
9 What great blessings there are for those who work to bring peace. God will call them his sons and daughters.
10 What great blessings there are for those who suffer persecution for doing what is right. God's kingdom belongs to them.
11 "People will insult you and hurt you. They will lie and say all kinds of evil things about you because you follow me. But when they do that, know that God will bless you.
12 Be happy about it. Be very glad because you have a great reward waiting for you in heaven. People did these same bad things to the prophets who lived before you.
13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its taste, it cannot be made salty again. Salt is useless if it loses its salty taste. It will be thrown out where people will just walk on it.
14 "You are the light that shines for the world to see. You are like a city built on a hill that cannot be hidden.
15 People don't hide a lamp under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand. Then the light shines for everyone in the house.
16 In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.
17 "Don't think that I have come to destroy the Law of Moses or the teaching of the prophets. I have come not to destroy their teachings but to give full meaning to them.
18 I assure you that nothing will disappear from the law until heaven and earth are gone. The law will not lose even the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter until it has all been done.
19 "A person should obey every command in the law, even one that does not seem important. Whoever refuses to obey any command and teaches others not to obey it will be the least important in God's kingdom. But whoever obeys the law and teaches others to obey it will be great in God's kingdom.
20 I tell you that you must do better than the teachers of the law and the Pharisees. If you are not more pleasing to God than they are, you will never enter God's kingdom.
21 "You have heard that it was said to our people long ago, 'You must not murder anyone. Any person who commits murder will be judged.'
22 But I tell you, don't be angry with anyone. If you are angry with others, you will be judged. And if you insult someone, you will be judged by the high court. And if you call someone a fool, you will be in danger of the fire of hell.
23 "So, what if you are offering your gift at the altar and remember that someone has something against you?
24 Leave your gift there and go make peace with that person. Then come and offer your gift.
25 "If anyone wants to take you to court, make friends with them quickly. Try to do that before you get to the court. If you don't, they might hand you over to the judge. And the judge will hand you over to a guard, who will throw you into jail.
26 I assure you that you will not leave there until you have paid everything you owe.
27 "You have heard that it was said, 'You must not commit adultery. '
28 But I tell you that if a man looks at a woman and wants to sin sexually with her, he has already committed that sin with her in his mind.
29 If your right eye makes you sin, take it out and throw it away. It is better to lose one part of your body than to have your whole body thrown into hell.
30 If your right hand makes you sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
31 "It was also said, 'Any man who divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce.'
32 But I tell you that any man who divorces his wife, except for the problem of sexual sin, is causing his wife to be guilty of adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman is guilty of adultery.
33 "You have heard that it was said to our people long ago, 'When you make a vow, you must not break your promise. Keep the vows that you make to the Lord.'
34 But I tell you, when you make a promise, don't try to make it stronger with a vow. Don't make a vow using the name of heaven, because heaven is God's throne.
35 Don't make a vow using the name of the earth, because the earth belongs to him. Don't make a vow using the name of Jerusalem, because it also belongs to him, the great King.
36 And don't even say that your own head is proof that you will keep your promise. You cannot make one hair on your head white or black.
37 Say only 'yes' if you mean 'yes,' and say only 'no' if you mean 'no.' If you say more than that, it is from the Evil One.
38 "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.'
39 But I tell you, don't fight back against anyone who wants to do harm to you. If they hit you on the right cheek, let them hit the other cheek too.
40 If anyone wants to sue you in court and take your shirt, let them have your coat too.
41 If a soldier forces you to walk with him one mile, go with him two.
42 Give to anyone who asks you for something. Don't refuse to give to anyone who wants to borrow from you.
43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.'
44 But I tell you, love your enemies. Pray for those who treat you badly.
45 If you do this, you will be children who are truly like your Father in heaven. He lets the sun rise for all people, whether they are good or bad. He sends rain to those who do right and to those who do wrong.
46 If you love only those who love you, why should you get a reward for that? Even the tax collectors do that.
47 And if you are nice only to your friends, you are no better than anyone else. Even the people who don't know God are nice to their friends.
48 What I am saying is that you must be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

3 Blessed G3107 A-NPM are the G3588 T-NPM poor G4434 A-NPM in spirit G4151 N-DSN : for G3754 CONJ theirs G846 P-GPM is G2076 V-PXI-3S the G3588 T-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF of heaven G3772 N-GPM .
4 Blessed G3107 A-NPM are they that mourn G3996 V-PAP-NPM : for G3754 CONJ they G846 P-NPM shall be comforted G3870 V-FPI-3P .
5 Blessed G3107 A-NPM are the meek G4239 A-NPM : for G3754 CONJ they G846 P-NPM shall inherit G2816 V-FAI-3P the G3588 T-ASF earth G1093 N-ASF .
6 Blessed G3107 A-NPM are they which do hunger G3983 V-PAP-NPM and G2532 CONJ thirst G1372 V-PAP-NPM after righteousness G1343 N-ASF : for G3754 CONJ they G846 P-NPM shall be filled G5526 V-FPI-3P .
7 Blessed G3107 A-NPM are the G3588 T-NPM merciful G1655 A-NPM : for G3754 CONJ they G846 P-NPM shall obtain mercy G1653 V-FPI-3P .
8 Blessed G3107 A-NPM are the G3588 T-NPM pure G2513 A-NPM in heart G2588 N-DSF : for G3754 CONJ they G846 P-NPM shall see G3700 V-FDI-3P God G2316 N-ASM .
9 Blessed G3107 A-NPM are the G3588 T-NPM peacemakers G1518 A-NPM : for G3754 CONJ they G846 P-NPM shall be called G2564 V-FPI-3P the children G5207 N-NPM of God G2316 N-GSM .
10 Blessed G3107 A-NPM are they which are persecuted G1377 V-RPP-NPM for righteousness\' sake G1752 ADV : for G3754 CONJ theirs G846 P-GPM is G2076 V-PXI-3S the G3588 T-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF of heaven G3772 N-GPM .
11 Blessed G3107 A-NPM are G2075 V-PXI-2P ye , when G3752 CONJ men shall revile G3679 V-AAS-3P you G5209 P-2AP , and G2532 CONJ persecute G1377 V-AAS-3P you , and G2532 CONJ shall say G2036 V-2AAS-3P all manner of evil G3956 A-ASN against G2596 PREP you G5216 P-2GP falsely G5574 V-PEP-NPM , for my sake G1752 ADV .
12 Rejoice G5463 V-PAM-2P , and G2532 CONJ be exceeding glad G21 V-PNM-2P : for G3754 CONJ great G4183 A-NSM is your G3588 T-NSM reward G3408 N-NSM in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM : for G1063 CONJ so G3779 ADV persecuted G1377 V-AAI-3P they G3588 T-APM the G3588 T-APM prophets G4396 N-APM which G3588 T-APM were before G4253 PREP you G5216 P-2GP .
13 Ye G5210 P-2NP are G2075 V-PXI-2P the G3588 T-NSN salt G217 N-NSN of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF : but G1161 CONJ if G1437 COND the G3588 T-NSN salt G217 N-NSN have lost his savor G3471 V-APS-3S , wherewith G1722 PREP shall it be salted G233 V-FPI-3S ? it is thenceforth G2089 ADV good G2480 V-PAI-3S for G1519 PREP nothing G3762 A-ASN , but G1508 to be cast G906 V-APN out G1854 ADV , and G2532 CONJ to be trodden under foot G2662 V-PPN of G3588 T-GPM men G444 N-GPM .
14 Ye G5210 P-2NP are G2075 V-PXI-2P the G3588 T-NSN light G5457 N-NSN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM world G2889 N-GSM . A city G4172 N-NSF that is set G2749 V-PNP-NSF on G1883 ADV a hill G3735 N-GSN cannot G1410 V-PNI-3S be hid G2928 V-2APN .
15 Neither G3761 ADV do men light G2545 V-PAI-3P a candle G3088 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ put G5087 V-PAI-3P it G846 P-ASM under G5259 PREP a bushel G3426 N-ASM , but G235 CONJ on G1909 PREP a candlestick G3087 N-ASF ; and G2532 CONJ it giveth light G2989 V-PAI-3S unto all G3956 A-DPM that G3588 T-DPM are in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF house G3614 N-DSF .
16 Let your G3588 T-NSN light G5457 N-NSN so G3779 ADV shine G2989 V-AAM-3S before G1715 PREP men G444 N-GPM , that G3704 ADV they may see G1492 V-2AAS-3P your G3588 T-APN good G2570 A-APN works G2041 N-APN , and G2532 CONJ glorify G1392 V-AAS-3P your G3588 T-ASM Father G3962 N-ASM which G3588 T-ASM is in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM .
17 Think G3543 V-AAS-2P not G3361 PRT-N that G3754 CONJ I am come G2064 V-2AAI-1S to destroy G2647 V-AAN the G3588 T-ASM law G3551 N-ASM , or G2228 PRT the G3588 T-APM prophets G4396 N-APM : I am not G3756 PRT-N come G2064 V-2AAI-1S to destroy G2647 V-AAN , but G235 CONJ to fulfill G4137 V-AAN .
18 For G1063 CONJ verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Till G2193 CONJ heaven G3772 N-NSM and G2532 CONJ earth G1093 N-NSF pass G3928 V-2AAS-3S , one G1520 A-NSN jot G2503 N-LI or G2228 PRT one G3391 tittle G2762 N-NSF shall in no wise G3364 pass G3928 V-2AAS-3S from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSM law G3551 N-GSM , till G2193 CONJ all G3956 A-NPN be fulfilled G1096 V-2ADS-3S .

20 For G1063 CONJ I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , That G3754 CONJ except G3362 your G3588 T-NSF righteousness G1343 N-NSF shall exceed G4052 V-AAS-3S the righteousness of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM scribes G1122 N-GPM and G2532 CONJ Pharisees G5330 N-GPM , ye shall in no case G3364 enter G1525 V-2AAS-2P into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF kingdom G932 N-ASF of heaven G3772 N-GPM .
21 Ye have heard G191 V-AAI-2P that G3754 CONJ it was said G4483 V-API-3S by them of old time G744 A-DPM , Thou shalt not G3756 PRT-N kill G5407 V-FAI-2S ; and G1161 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM shall kill G5407 V-AAS-3S shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S in danger G1777 A-NSM of G3588 T-DSF the G3588 T-DSF judgment G2920 N-DSF :

26 Verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto thee G4671 P-2DS , Thou shalt by no means G3364 come out G1831 V-2AAS-2S thence G1564 ADV , till G2193 CONJ thou hast paid G591 V-2AAS-2S the G3588 T-ASM uttermost G2078 A-ASM farthing G2835 N-ASM .
27 Ye have heard G191 V-AAI-2P that G3754 CONJ it was said G4483 V-API-3S by them of old time G744 , Thou shalt not G3756 PRT-N commit adultery G3431 V-FAI-2S :
28 But G1161 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , That G3754 CONJ whosoever G3588 T-NSM looketh G991 V-PAP-NSM on a woman G1135 N-ASF to lust G1937 V-AAN after her G846 P-ASF hath committed adultery G3431 V-AAI-3S with her G846 P-ASF already G2235 ADV in G1722 PREP his G3588 T-DSF heart G2588 N-DSF .

31 It G1161 CONJ hath been said G4483 V-API-3S , Whosoever G302 PRT shall put away G630 V-AAS-3S his G3588 T-ASF wife G1135 N-ASF , let him give G1325 V-2AAM-3S her G846 P-GSM a writing of divorcement G647 N-ASN :
32 But G1161 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , That G3754 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM shall put away G630 V-AAS-3S his G3588 T-ASF wife G1135 N-ASF , saving for G3924 ADV the cause G3056 N-GSM of fornication G4202 N-GSF , causeth G4160 V-PAI-3S her G846 P-GSM to commit adultery G3429 V-PNN : and G2532 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM shall marry G1060 V-AAS-3S her that is divorced G630 V-RPP-ASF committeth adultery G3429 V-PNI-3S .
33 Again G3825 ADV , ye have heard G191 V-AAI-2P that G3754 CONJ it hath been said G4483 V-API-3S by them of old time G744 A-DPM , Thou shalt not G3756 PRT-N forswear G1964 V-FAI-2S thyself , but G1161 CONJ shalt perform G591 V-FAI-2S unto the G3588 T-DSM Lord G2962 N-DSM thine G3588 T-APM oaths G3727 N-APM :
34 But G1161 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Swear G3660 V-AAN not G3361 PRT-N at all G3654 ADV ; neither G3383 CONJ by G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DSM ; for G3754 CONJ it G3588 T-GSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S God G2316 N-GSM \'s throne G2362 N-NSM :
35 Nor G3383 CONJ by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF earth G1093 N-DSF ; for G3754 CONJ it is G2076 V-PXI-3S his G846 P-GSM footstool G5286 N-NSN : neither G3383 CONJ by G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-ASF ; for G3754 CONJ it is G2076 V-PXI-3S the city G4172 N-NSF of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM great G3173 A-GSM King G935 N-GSM .
36 Neither G3383 CONJ shalt thou swear G3660 V-AAS-2S by G1722 PREP thy G3588 T-DSF head G2776 N-DSF , because G3754 CONJ thou canst G1410 V-PNI-2S not G3756 PRT-N make G4160 V-AAN one G3391 hair G2359 N-ASF white G3022 A-ASF or G2228 PRT black G3189 A-ASF .
37 But G1161 CONJ let your G3588 T-NSM communication G3056 N-NSM be G2077 V-PXM-3S , Yea G3483 PRT , yea G3483 PRT ; Nay G3756 PRT-N , nay G3756 PRT-N : for G1161 CONJ whatsoever is more G4053 A-NSN than these G5130 D-GPM cometh G2076 V-PXI-3S of G3588 T-GSM evil G4190 A-GSM .
38 Ye have heard G191 V-AAI-2P that G3754 CONJ it hath been said G4483 V-API-3S , An eye G3788 N-ASM for G473 PREP an eye G3788 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ a tooth G3599 N-ASM for G473 PREP a tooth G3599 N-GSM :
39 But G1161 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , That ye resist G436 V-2AAN not G3361 PRT-N evil G4190 A-DSM : but G235 CONJ whosoever G3748 R-NSM shall smite G4474 V-FAI-3S thee G4571 P-2AS on G1909 PREP thy G3588 T-ASF right G1188 A-ASF cheek G4600 N-ASF , turn G4762 V-AAM-2S to him G846 P-DSM the G3588 T-ASF other G243 A-ASF also G2532 CONJ .
40 And G2532 CONJ if any man will G2309 V-PAP-DSM sue thee at the law G2919 V-APN , and G2532 CONJ take away G2983 V-2AAN thy G3588 T-ASM coat G5509 N-ASM , let him G846 P-DSM have G863 V-2AAM-2S thy cloak G2440 N-ASN also G2532 CONJ .
41 And G2532 CONJ whosoever G3748 R-NSM shall compel thee to go G29 V-FAI-3S a G1520 A-ASN mile G3400 N-ASN , go G5217 V-PAM-2S with G3326 PREP him G846 P-GSM twain G1417 A-NUI .
42 Give G1325 V-PAM-2S to him that asketh G154 V-PAP-DSM thee G4571 P-2AS , and G2532 CONJ from him that would G2309 V-PAP-ASM borrow G1155 V-AMN of G575 PREP thee G4675 P-2GS turn not thou away G654 V-2APS-2S .
43 Ye have heard G191 V-AAI-2P that G3754 CONJ it hath been said G4483 V-API-3S , Thou shalt love G25 V-FAI-2S thy G3588 T-ASM neighbor G4139 ADV , and G2532 CONJ hate G3404 V-FAI-2S thine G3588 T-ASM enemy G2190 A-ASM .
44 But G1161 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Love G25 V-PAM-2P your G3588 T-APM enemies G2190 A-APM , bless G2127 V-PAM-2P them that curse G2672 V-PNP-APM you G5209 P-2AP , do G4160 V-PAM-2P good G2573 ADV to them that hate G3404 V-PAP-DPM you G5209 P-2AP , and G2532 CONJ pray G4336 V-PNM-2P for G3588 T-GPM them which despitefully use G1908 V-PAP-GPM you G5209 P-2AP , and G2532 CONJ persecute G1377 V-PAP-GPM you G5209 P-2AP ;
